JSK members welcome to the new edition of the GHU magazine.

New Committee structure - 2014.

A new leadership and committee structure was agreed at the fi rst committee meeting post 2013 AGM. Basically, the new structure releases the Governors and committee members to have holistic responsibilities and greater autonomy in areas where clear GHU objectives have been formally agreed. Also, In the spirit of empowering individuals within the committee to be more creative and taking on greater, non-legal, responsibilities; “Co-Op Governor” positions have been created. Below is a table of the new committee structure.

Priorities and working structure. With a large debt and a reducing income conundrum, focus and priority is again placed in three major areas which can generate large revenues; the Mandir, Apple Tree Community Centre and Kitchen. The leadership of these three areas have the greatest responsibilities and therefore will have the greatest say and budget allocation.

General Volunteering.

The GHU is a volunteer led organisation. We are fortunate to have so many volunteers who step up and support activities when needed. However, there is always a need for new volunteers. We strongly request our members to help in whatever way they can to keep the organisation thriving.

II Jai Shree Krishna Jai Sia Ram II

I will be supporting the Gurjar Hindu Union over the next one year as incoming Chairman of the organisation. In this period I would like to support the youth group, which is in its infancy, set up by dedicated youngsters. They have managed our fi rst sponsored walk in Tilgate Park and I along with the full committee intend to support this event on an annual basis for it to form a key event in the GHU Youth calendar.

Our outgoing chair has organised additional group activities with the youth group which will be announced in due course.

Our youngsters are also involved in Bhajan Kirtans and I will also be supporting them with their projects. I will listen to their suggestions very keenly too.

Our Governors are working away with their individual projects, I look forward be helping them facilitate these and brings changes in individual areas where necessary. My aim is to sit with individual of the Governors to familiarise myself with their work and support them where support is needed.

As incoming Chair for this year my main focus will be to support and organise the planning of 2015 events with the help of our Ambassisors, Ashwinbhai and the Governors.

2015 celebrates the Appletree Centre’s 5yrs anniversary, we intend to acknowledge this milestone with activities throughout the year.

I will be seeking support from all our Mandir supporters, GHU Youth Group , GHU Dance groups and outside groups who can make a difference and make 2015 a special year for us.

Throughout the year I shall be communicating with past honorary members who have served the GHU and inviting them to become part of 2015 Celebrations together with Mandirs throughout UK.

Ashwinbhai Soni is leading the 2015 Project and I request your support in giving him your input and contribution to festivities that lie ahead.

I look forward to working with individual groups in our organisation and bringing about change where necessary over the coming year.

Dilipbhai Limbahchia, has done a tremendous amount of work in last one year and I will continue to carry out all the projects he has started.

Jai Shree Krishna

GHU Committee Structure 2014

The leadership and management of the Gurjar Hindu Union Sanatan Mandir and Community Centre (SMCC) is divided into nine departments (see below) and currently managed by eight of elected Governors.

Kokiben Patel was the elected Chair of Governors for one year for 2014.

GHU Governors liaise for strategic guidance with three infl uential businessmen, namely Kirtibhai Patel, Piyooshbhai Chotai and Illeshbhai Patel. They are known as the GHU Ambassadors.

Each department may have Committee Members and/or Committed Volunteers. GHU is fortunate to have a substantial team of both these members together with other devoted members who are called upon as required.

GHU Operations: Managing and running SMCC or Apple Tree Centre (ATC) as we are now called is a challenging task. All departments as below must run effectively and effi ciently.

With the current debt of £1.73 million prudent fi nancial planning and careful management with no paid staff (except Shastriji) are critical for the sustainability of our Centre.

GHU Committee:Like all organisations, GHU too is an evolving entity. New issues and challenges mean that Committee changes take place to meet the needs of our Centre. Our management structure is fl exible to accommodate changing needs and the availabilities of a volunteer workforce. The table below shows the 2013 -14 Committee structure. The Governors and Committee members meet every Thursday evening to discuss and progress the work programme. Minutes of the meetings are taken by Pravin or Ashwin and circulated in a timely manner. For Committed Volunteers it is optional to attend Thursday meetings.

The new system and structure has been running for four years. It is early days but we are very optimistic that 2014 would be another very successful year for GHU with all the religious, social and cultural programmes held successfully.

This year we shall be actively inviting new faces to come and support GHU. If you would like to come and work and give Seva then please contact any Governor. or log on www:crawleyhindu.com

II Jai Shree Krishna I Jai Sia Ram I Jai Limbach Maa II

Giving an insight of the achievement of the governing body of the Gurjar Hindu Union over the last year as a departing Chairman of the organisation.

Over the last year a youth group has been setup by dedicated member’s namely Pranav Shukla, Chitra Shah, Krishna Bhojani, Satnam Singh Sidhu, Radhika Pattni and Jignesh Gadhvi. These members give self-esteem and a grounding base knowledge to our young members and their membership has been gradually growing. These youth members also managed our fi rst sponsored walk in Tilgate Park and raised over £3000, making it an annual event with another one to be announced this August 2014.

Due to the unprecedented devastation that took place last year in Uttarkhand, GHU raised over £2000 from devotees which was donated to AIM for Sewa via Jayendra Lakhani, who was in the area at that time. The donations have been put towards teaching widows to be self-suffi cient by learning tailoring.

We have started discussions with an exciting band for this year’s Navratri celebration, and will have an earlier insight of the bands performance as they have been booked to play at a few upcoming events.

We have also started discussions with organisations in and around the south east to form a group where we help each other and organise events together to make them more successful. The next meeting is at the Mandir on the 6th of April 2014 at 6pm, so please lets us know of any groups that wish to join or let them know of our aim.

Kokiben has done a tremendous job with the Gujaratri School and we have seen an increase in the GCSE take up and have subsequently increased the teachers to accommodate the rise in pupils.

Haskumhbhai is another member who has put a great effort in looking after the schools visiting the Appletree Centre and is well versed with the briefi ng of Hinduism and answering very intelligent questions raised by the youngsters.

Last year we had a tremendous fi reworks display and a BIG thankyou to the youth group who organised the event, they were totally soaked by the end of the display, however there will be a Fireworks Display every Diwali at the Mandir and donations towards the cost will be greatly appreciated.

PLEASE book you Chopra Pujan early this year to avoid disappointment.

What a fantastic Diwali Show last year, thank you to the organising team and the participant’s and to all the members who supported the event, this year will be even better. It’s been a great year and we will be continuing with what I have started and wish Kokiben all the best for 2014 as Head of Governors.

GHU Vadil Kendra (Senior day care centre)

Another eventful year was enjoyed by the elderly members of the GHU.

The members of the Vadil Kendra club meet on Wednesdays and Fridays and enjoy an opportunity to socialise, play games and do light exercises. On Fridays a hot meal is available for members after the afternoon Aarti.

During the summer months of 2013 the members went on day trips to Margate and Littlehampton. Members also have had several food parties with one at a local restaurant!

To help members stay healthy, Dinaben Patel is running some light exercise sessions.

And, for the fi rst time, a free NHS Health Check pilot was conducted at the centre; we are planning to do more of these health type information and activity events for our elderly soon.

For further information please contact Pravin Mistry on 07918613623.
