SPRING AT LAST!Resident Winifred Rea is often

inspired by her surroundings to putpen to paper.

Spring is here at last.Gone is that old winter blast. The wind that howled and

made us freeze, has turned intoa gentle breeze. The trees arebeginning to bud and blossomagain with little help from thespring rains. The flowers arepeeking from the ground. Androbins are chirping and hoppingaround. The birds are makingnuts and seeking mates.

Ready to start families -- isn’tthat great? Let us thank God forthese beautiful days. Even therain He sends our way.

God is smiling down upon ustoo after we survived that hardwinter.

Enjoy this new view!

The History ofMother’s Day

Anna Jarvis, a youngAppalachian homemaker, decided both Union andConfederate troops in the CivilWar deserved better sanitaryconditions. So she proposed theimplementation of what shecalled Mothers’ Work Days.Initially, no one else supportedher cause. But years later, socialactivist Julia Ward Howe—whohad been inspired by Jarvis’efforts—decided to try her ownhand at uniting women againstthe war. Unfortunately, she, too, failed to receive formalrecognition of her Mother’s Dayfor Peace.

The women’s efforts weren’tfor naught, however. Theyignited Jarvis’ daughter—alsonamed Anna Jarvis—to beginher own crusade. The youngerJarvis created a memorial day forwomen in honor of her motherafter the elder Jarvis died. Thefirst Mother’s Day took place inMay 1908.

In 1914, the day wonnational acclaim when PresidentWoodrow Wilson declared thefirst national Mother’s Day.

Senior Fitness: EveryStep Counts

When you add just a fewhundred steps a day, you makegreat strides in improvingoverall health. This can be doneby forming new habits likemarching in place duringtelevision commercials, walkinga few times up and down ourhalls, or strolling through thegarden. You can buy apedometer (a small, hand-helddevice that counts your steps) ifyou want to keep track of howfar you’ve gone in a day.

Fit Not FrailAs people age, they lose

muscle mass, strength andflexibility, and the resultingfrailty leads to a loss of mobilityand independence. But regularparticipation in aerobics, strength training and balanceand flexibility exercises candelay and even prevent physicaldecline into one’s 90s andbeyond. The key is to startslowly and build gradually asability and strength improve. You should consult your doctorbeforehand, and a few sessionswith a trainer can help ensurethe exercises are done correctly.

Pour on the KetchupWhether you spell it ketchup

or catsup, the tangytomato-based condiment is inpeak demand during thesummer as Americans take aimon hot dogs and hamburgers.

A forerunner to ketchupknown as ke-tsiap or kecaporiginated with Indonesian andAsian cultures hundreds of yearsago as a spicy pickled sauce forfish made of anchovies, walnuts, mushrooms and kidney beans.British seamen brought thecondiment home with them inthe 17th century and changed itsname to catchup. By the 18thcentury, New Englanders wereadding tomatoes to the mixture.

Full-blown commercialproduction started in 1876when Henry J. Heinz startedbottling ketchup. Although hewas not the first to produceketchup, his recipe caught onand remains the same tothis day.

Ketchup does have healthyproperties. Its base is cookedtomatoes, which containlycopene—shown to havecancer-fighting properties. Still, the scientific world rebelledwhen ketchup was declared avegetable on school lunchmenus for a brief period in the1980s. It would be absurd todeclare a hot dog smothered inketchup a healthy food item, butit’s summertime—the timeto indulge.

Just Doing Her Job?In addition to the demanding

duties of motherhood, ourmoms worked second jobs ashomemakers, accountants, teachers, scientists, writers, artists, chefs and more. If anaward were to be given for BestMother Ever, millions of womenwould be recognized becauseeach mother excels in her ownway. However, every last onewould probably decline theaward, saying that she was gladto do whatever she could to giveher children the world. The teamat our community would like tothank all mothers for their hardwork and devotion. We hopeyour Mother’s Day holds all thehappiness that you deserve!

Wit & Wisdom“A mother’s love for her child islike nothing else in the world.”

—Agatha Christie“I am sure that if the mothers of

various nations could meet, there would be no more wars.”

—E. M. Forster“The art of mothering is to teach

the art of living to children.”—Elaine Heffner

“All women become like theirmothers. That is their tragedy.

No man does. That’s his.”—Oscar Wilde

—Bern Williams“A mother understands what a

child does not say.”—Proverb

The Day to RememberThose We’ve Lost

Memorial Day, originallyknown as Decoration Day,began in the 1860s, whenpeople would decorate thegraves of soldiers who hadfought in the Civil War. Gen.John Logan, leader of a CivilWar veterans’ organization, officially proclaimed May 30 asMemorial Day in 1868.

After World War I, May 30became a day to honor fallensoldiers from all wars.

In 1971, Memorial Daybecame a federal holiday, andCongress declared it becelebrated on the last Monday inMay, ensuring a three-dayweekend.

Cities across the country holdMemorial Day parades andother events. American flags areoften placed throughoutcemeteries for veterans. At othercemeteries, many people chooseto decorate the graves of allloved ones, not just servicemembers.

On Memorial Day, theAmerican flag should be flownat half staff until noon, thenraised to full staff in recognitionof those currently serving in themilitary.

The Memorial Day weekendis often a time for picnics andbarbecues, as it is considered theunofficial start of summer.

Indy 500“The Greatest Spectacle in

Racing” takes place inIndianapolis Memorial Dayweekend.

From Our ChaplainIt seems to me that we spend

a lot of time looking for things. Some things simply getmisplaced and we must searchto find them. Other things likelooking for signs of spring aftera long cold winter seem to justnot appear. I have begun towatch for the several pairs ofBaltimore orioles that arrive inour back yard each spring andbuild their homes and raise theirfamilies throughout thesummer.

Our world news has beendominated lately by peoplesearching for things that theycannot find. Many, many hourshas been spent looking for themissing Malaysia Airlines jet thatjust disappeared from the skies. How agonizing for the familiesand friends of the loved ones onboard the aircraft when reportscome back of no sightings of anykind of the missing plane.

In the New Testament gospelof Luke, we find Jesus’s teachingthrough the parables aboutsearching for a lost sheep, a lostcoin, and a lost Son. In each caseafter much diligent searching, there is great celebration whenthe lost is found. What are yousearching for these days? Is itfriendship? Contentment withyour life? peace? joy? I urge youto keep searching until you findit and then celebrate its return.Just remember ... most lostthings are eventually found!Don’t forget to celebrate!
