Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 12, 2013, in Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry King officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Earline was born in Stokes County on February 24, 1935, a daughter of the late Gene Monroe Nelson and Ruby East Nelson. She had worked at Ballet Hoisery, Little Cotton Manufacturing and Wadesboro IGA. Survivors include three grandchildren, Amanda Williams Sztyber (Sebastian) of Fort Mill, SC, Gene Freeman (Amy) and Tyra F. White, all of Cheraw; one great grandchild, Joseph White; a brother, Curtis Nelson (Becky) of McFarlan; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Nelson of Cheraw. In addition to her parents Earline was preceded in death by son, “Pee Wee” Freeman, daughter Ruby Dale Williams, brother Melvin Nelson and sister Nellie Tice. She was a retired seamstress. She was preceded in death by her husband Otis H. Quates, son David Quates and daughter Gloria Quates. Mrs. Quates is survived by two sons, Kenneth Quates of Marshville and Chris Quates of Waxhaw; brother Leon W. Helms of Monroe; and two sisters, Willeen H. Mrs. Annabel Allen Stanback Mrs. Annabel Allen Stanback, 87, died Friday, May 10, 2013, at her home. The family will greet friends Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with burial in Eastview Cemetery. Annabel was born May 24, 1925, in Wadesboro, the fourth child of Dr. Charles Insley Allen and Louise Lambeth Allen. She graduated from Wadesboro High School, Salem College with a B.S. degree in Biology, and then received a Medical Technology degree from Bowman Gray. After working a few years at Lexington Memorial Hospital and Rex Hospital in Raleigh, she married Pickett Moss Stanback in 1950, and became a full-time homemaker and mother of four. Annabel grew up in First Baptist Church of Wadesboro and has the honor of being the first person baptized in their new sanctuary in 1937 at age 12. After marrying Pickett, she joined his church, First United Methodist. She became an active member and belonged to the United Methodist Women, the Tex Ledbetter Sunday School Class, the Suzanna Wesley Circle and held many offices in each one. She was ready and willing to do any job that needed doing in her church. Annabel was a charter member of the Anson County Hospital Auxiliary and also a past president. She began serving on the juice cart which she did for many years. She also delivered “Meals on Wheels” in the community, and in 2002 was one of five chosen as a recipient of the N.C. Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. She was a member of the Anson County Arts Council and the Anson County Historical Society. She played an integral part in establishing the Ashe- Covington Medical Museum in uptown Wadesboro. She was a frequent visitor to shut- ins and those in the nursing home and hospital. Annabel loved her Lord and her family. She was preceded in death just three months ago by her husband of nearly sixty-four years, Pickett Moss Stanback; her daughter, Louise Allen Hough (Woody) in 2004; her sister, Effie Allen Tillman and brothers, Charles and Burgess Allen. Survivors include her son, George M. Stanback II (Jocie) of Statesville; daughters, Julia Powell Russell (Ron) of Charlotte and Nancy Lambeth Harman (Ted) of Jackson Springs; grandchildren, Catharine Lambeth Hough Phifer, Julia Allen Hough Tarlton (Stephen), Jason Moore Harman (Christin), Luke Lambeth Harman (Celeste), and Daniel Allen Harman; great-grandchildren, Brittany Louise Phifer and Annalee Naomi Harman; brother, Fulton Coleman Allen (Pat) of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; and many nieces and nephews. The family extends their sincere thanks to the staff of Richmond County Hospice for their dedicated and professional care and to Annabel’s devoted in-home caregivers, Lori, Jennifer, Beth, Gail, Susie and Mindy. A l e d o ™ m s e i r e t S c e l e 0 S 0 3 e X ADESBORO, NC 28170-0220 On the Road, On the Water, Don’t Drink and Drive Campaign Resumes A multi-agency safety initiative aimed at summer holiday travel will resume throughout North Carolina, beginning this Memorial Day weekend, May 24-27. The “On the Road, On the Water, Don’t Drink and Drive” campaign will work to reduce accidents on the state’s roadways and waterways, which see increased traffic this time of year. Unfortunately, too many accidents are alcohol-related. In North Carolina, a driver or vessel operator with a blood- alcohol concentration that meets or exceeds .08 or is appreciably impaired by alcohol and/or drugs is subject to arrest. The campaign is made up of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program, Wildlife Resources Commission, State Highway Patrol, Alcohol Law Enforcement, Forensic Tests for Alcohol, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard and local police and sheriff’s offices, along with participating organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving, who work for public safety in their communities. “On the Road, On the Water, Don’t Drink and Drive is more than an annual law enforcement campaign,” said Sgt. David Jordan, a Commission wildlife officer stationed in Pender County. “It’s a partnership, with the most important partner being a safe and responsible public.” Officers will conduct sobriety checkpoints and special increased patrols during busy holiday periods, combined with special messaging strategies to increase awareness of the dangerous consequences of impaired driving.
