First Friday Adoration Adoration is held from 9am - 10am

on the first Friday of every month. All are welcome to join us

in worshiping our Lord.

Devotions

This is what it looks like when God comes: like Mary, we are

surprised; our emptiness (barrenness) is filled; the Holy Spirit

overshadows us; our own life-time habit of yes to God pops

out from us and with ease when we have practiced our yes

over and over in our daily living. As with Mary, God’s

coming and our yes to it changes us for life. The gospels say

little about Mary: she bore and gave birth to the Messiah, she

was the mother who helped him grow in wisdom and grace,

she was with him during his ministry, she stood at the foot of

the cross when he was dying. Yet this is enough to know that

Mary’s yes to God carried far beyond the initial events of

conception and birth. Her own everyday living bore out her

continual living in and openness to God’s Presence. So it is

with us. Our everyday living must proclaim that God is

present to us and fills us. “How can this be?” Because we

are blessed in Christ, adopted as God’s own children, chosen

and destined to exist “for the praise of his glory”. The effect

of God’s Presence to us is just as astounding as God’s coming

to Mary. All we need to do is believe that we, too, are

extended God’s fullness of grace. We are faithful to that

grace when we say yes to God’s will in our everyday lives.

Daniel Palese Social Justice Today’s reading from Isaiah is a clear proclamation about

justice. It reminds us that justice is essential to the spirit of

God.

God wants the poor to hear glad tidings.

God wants the broken to be healed.

God wants to free those in captivity.

God wants a year of jubilee – a year of God’s favor toward

the poor.

Retirement Fund for Religious Thank you! “We cer tainly call you fr iends because

of the way you care for our retired members,” writes a

from Saint Margaret’s will make their annual retreat together

at the Malvern Retreat House. This year’s scheduled Retreat

Directors will be: Fr. Len Peterson, Fr. Michael Callaghan.

Malvern is the oldest and largest Catholic retreat house in the

U.S., accommodating up to 400 overnight guests with private

rooms, delicious meals, and guidance in spiritual reflection.

Jim Fitzsimmons, President of Malvern spoke of the experi-

ence; “What has sustained Malvern throughout its 100-year

history is the never-ending, very personal desire of men and

women to spend time in God’s presence, away from the dis-

tractions and demands of the world. We continue to be an

important spiritual resource because people never lose the

desire to get close to God. We look forward to continuing this

experience into the next century.”

Diocese News

Bring It Home December 14, 2014

In this weekend’s readings, an angel appears before

Mary bearing good news. As you light your fourth can-

dle on your Advent wreath, Bring It Home by talking

about the angels in your life. What messages from God

have you received each day? Who has shared Good

News with you? How have you shared Good News with

others this week?

Marriage Moments It's almost here - Christmas of course. It's easy to

feel pretty frantic and busy at this time of year.

We want to get a nice gift for our spouse, the kids, who-

ever, decorate, etc. Take some time out today. It needn't

be long; just a pause. Look at each other and be thank-

ful.

Parenting Pointers How do you feel about the way you spend Advent

and the Christmas holidays? Are you comfortable with

the customs and pace you’ve adopted? Don’t be a vic-

tim. Set your own pace. Don’t be so busy being Martha

that you forget to be Mary to your child.

You can worry about the priest shortage in our

Church today – or you can do something about it –

join the Diocesan Vocations Guild. The Guild is open

to Catholics from within or with ties to the Diocese of

Wilmington who pray for, encourage and support the

bishop, priests, religious, deacons and seminarians of

the diocese. The objectives of the Guild are achieved

through prayer, service and the affirmation of the im-

portance of the priesthood, diaconate and the religious

life to the mission of the diocese. For more member-

ship information, contact Mary Ann Peirson at 302-573-

3113 or [email protected].

Catholic Charities can provide support to

unaccompanied minors that have arrived

in Delaware from Central America and the families that

are sponsoring them. In addition to making food and

clothing available, Catholic Charities can link minors in

need of legal representation with free legal services. For

more information, call Catholic Charities. In New Cas-

tle County, call 302-655-9624, in Kent County call 302-

674-1600, and in Sussex County call 302-856-9578.

Are You Being Called by God? Through the ministry of priests, deacons and religious women

and men, the Lord brings glad tidings to the poor, proclaims

liberty to captives and announces His favor to all who would

follow in His ways. Is God calling you to serve His people

through a religious vocation? If you think so, please call or

write Father David Kelley, Diocesan Director of Priestly and

Religious Vocations (302-573-3113 or [email protected]).

Regional Bereavement Support Series

“Seasons of Hope” If you are experiencing the grief that follows the death of

loved one, you may be interested in this eight week program.

Seasons of Hope is a Catholic support program for the be-

reaved searching for hope and healing. The program is cen-

tered on Jesus Christ and grounded in the healing wisdom,

traditions and practices of the Catholic Church. Seasons of

Hope was created by nationally recognized hospice care and

bereavement specialist, M. Donna MacLeod. Weekly ses-

sions follow the same simple format and flow with a topic

and comforting blend of commentary, scripture, prayer, sim-

ple group exercises, faith-sharing and Catholic tradition. Par-

ticipant journals are provided for use in group gatherings and

home journaling. This program is not meant to take the place

of or provide therapy/counseling. Seasons of Hope will be

offered at St. John the Beloved Parish in Wilmington every

Thursday morning from 9:30-11:30 January 8 through Febru-

ary 26, 2015. A fee of $8.00 will cover the cost for program

materials. For more details and a registration brochure please

contact the Office for Marriage & Family Life at 302-295-
