America,

Welcome to Minneapolis! We’re pleased to welcome the members and

guests of the Norwegian Singers Association of America on the occasion of

your 60th biennial SANGERFEST, being held in Minneapolis on June 12th

to 14th, 2014.

Each of your choruses has provided many years of entertainment to your

respective communities, maintaining and strengthening the great cultural

diversity that helps make the Upper Midwest such a desirable place to live.

You are to be commended for your dedication and service.

During your visit to our great city, I hope you have an opportunity to take in

the environment and arts that make Minneapolis so incredible. There are

miles of Mississippi riverfront that wind throughout the city, in addition to

the chain of lakes that offer spectacular views of our mix of urban and

residential beauty. We hope you have a chance to experience the vibrancy of

our city, which includes one of the best theater and performing arts scenes in

the country, a legendary music scene, award-winning restaurants and many

multi-cultural neighborhoods.

In addition to our 60th Biennial Sangerfest, Norway is celebrating its 200th Anniversary of Constitution Day, Syttende Mai 1814 - 2014.

We gather for the love of Scandinavian male chorus music, to create friendship among its members and to provide the public with an opportunity to become acquainted with Scandinavian music.

The wish of the NSAA is for everyone to “make memories” these three days with your music and good fellowship.

Short History of Norwegian Choruses and “Sangerfests”

n the mid 1800’s in Norway as well as in much of Northern Europe; students, craftsmen and merchants organized choruses

to provide a musical and social opportunity outside of church music. These groups, with the support of Nordic composers of the time, performed music that came from folk songs, reflected Nordic life and nature, and supported the new sense of patriotic fervor in the lands.

As Scandinavians migrated to North America in the late 1800’s they brought with them their love of singing and singing societies. These societies first established on both east and west coasts but once the immigrants moved inland the Midwest became a vital center of singing as well.

The first Scandinavian Sangerfest was held in Philadelphia in 1887. A local male chorus was joined by a New York City Chorus, Normennenes of Chicago and two choirs from Norway for that event. A second Sangerfest was held in Chicago with 24 choruses making up 600 singers. By 1891, when Minneapolis held its first biennial Sangerfest, it attracted 51 choirs from New York to Seattle totaling over 800 singers!

Although one of the purposes of the early choruses was to promote fellowship among all Scandinavian groups, it soon became evident that various ethnic groups were setting up their own singing societies. On September 21, 1892 the Norwegian Singers Association of America was founded and NSAA Sangerfests have been held in even numbered years ever since, with the exception of 1918 and 1944, war years.

Regional associations were also formed, such as the Sioux Valley Singers Association in 1936, which still holds Sangerfests in the odd numbered years. As members grew older, a Veterans Chorus was established around 1930 within the NSAA. Each of the NSAA member choruses has its own structure and history. All of the choruses represented in this 60th Biennial Sangerfest have long histories, many over 100 years of singing. The pattern for concerts and events as well as the music selected for Sangerfests has been established by the musical leadership of the member choruses. With so many years of singing, “traditions” have been established that members hold as very special, one being the awarding of medals for years of singing.

The NSAA has established a website (www.nsaaonline.org) and its official publication is Sanger Hilsen (singers greeting), which is published bimonthly. Archives of the NSAA and member choruses are housed at the Center for Western Studies within the Library of Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Director in ChiefDAVID JUDISCH

David Judisch, director of the Luren Singing Society of Decorah, Iowa, since 1975, has also been Director-in-Chief of the Norwegian Singers Association of America since 1984. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Iowa and is Professor Emeritus of Music at Luther College in Decorah. In 2012 he retired from a full time position in music at Luther where he taught voice, opera, diction for singers, and vocal pedagogy.

He has been featured in a variety of venues as baritone soloist in twelve countries and twenty eight American states. He has maintained an active career as singer, stage director, conductor, teacher, and administrator. Most recently he was heard with the Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre in the operatic roles of Benoit and Alcindoro in Puccini’s La Bohème. In 2003 he was one of eight singers selected to represent the United States in a festival in Bolivia called Songs Across the Americas sponsored by Songs Unlimited, Inc. In recent years he has been presented in recital in Sun City, Arizona, with players from the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. He has led six separate male chorus tours as a conductor to Norway between the years 1983 and 2005.

During his diverse career he has sung for 36,000 baseball fans in Wrigley Field and has performed with Luren Singers for the King of Norway on three separate occasions. He has performed forty-five operatic roles and has appeared with regional orchestras, opera companies, and choral societies throughout the Midwest in both opera and oratorio. He has also dabbled in musical theater and performed the role of Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof to critical acclaim with Iowa’s Dorian Opera Theatre.

He was twice a district winner in the NATS Artists Awards competition and received a certificate from the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, in vocal performance.

For twenty six years he was Director of the Dorian Summer Music Camps at Luther College. He has been a frequent voice clinician and has served as adjudicator for state and regional vocal competitions. For twenty four years he was choir director at Decorah Lutheran Church. He lives in Decorah with his wife, Gail.

ACCOMPANISTDAN RITTER

Dan Ritter has worked with many choirs over the years. He presently accompanies the American Swedish Institute Male Chorus, and directs and accompanies the Pistachio Singers, a women’s group; and the Männerchor, a German male chorus. He also accompanied the Nordkap Male Chorus for 11 years, until their farewell centenary celebration in 2009, and accompanied the White Bear Lake Community Chorus and the Metropolitan Boys’

Choir, each for six years. Mr. Ritter is organist at Parkway UCC, in Minneapolis, and works with the church choir there, as well.

Mr. Ritter has a BA in piano performance from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. He has done extensive accompanying of singers and instrumentalists, as well as choirs, and has taught piano lessons for over 30 years. He is delighted for the opportunity to once more work with Norwegian singers, in this, his second stint as Sangerfest Accompanist for NSAA.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORCARSTEN SLOSTAD

Carsten Slostad...Assistant Director-in-Chief is the conductor of the Norwegian Glee Club of Minneapolis, a position he has held since 2007. He is a graduate of St. Olaf College, Northfield Minnesota and was a member of the St. Olaf Choir. He has recently retired from 44 years of working as a part-time church musician serving as organist and choirmaster in various Lutheran congregations in the Twin Cities. He is also the founding director of “7 Gifts, A Women’s Sextet”. This semi-professional group has been singing together for 14 years, presenting concerts and singing in liturgical settings. He is a long time member of the Twin Cities Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, serving in many leadership capacities over the years.

In addition to his musical career, he has worked as a chef for AAUW of Minneapolis and was Food Service Director for Plymouth Church in Minneapolis. He also had a career in public administration with the Neighborhood Revitalization Program in Minneapolis. He lives in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Mandskoret Bislett Bad & RundkjøringThe Bislett Men’s Choir

he Bislett Men’s Choir of Norway was founded in 1977 as an independent men’s choir consisting of 19 members and one conductor.

The choir prides itself on its slogan “the choir which only sings abroad”. But to set the record straight, they have on a few ocassions sung in Norway. The choir’s most recent revitalization began in 1989, which was responsible for releasing its true musical and humoristic potential. Their repertoire goes from the typical 19th century Norwegian male choir songs to light 21st century pop music and a variety of musical styles in between.

The Bislett Men’s Choir has co-operated with several Norwegian organizations; their main “tour” partner being the Norwegian Seamen’s Church, which has locations throughout the world. They are also associated with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Chief Chaplain of the Norwegian Armed

Forces and the Norwegian Broadcasting System (NRK)

The choir gets its name from the Bislett neighborhood in Oslo distinguished by its being located by a swimming pool (bad) and a round about (rundkjøring) and not in a proper church setting. The members of the choir are from all parts of Norway and gather at various locations in Norway to work on the “annual tour abroad” as the ultimate highlight of their concert work. Tore Ulleberg, there conductor lives in Stavanger.

The Bislett Men’s Choir has several CD recordings and is proud of a long list of concerts and television appearances in Norway and abroad.

Norwegian Constitution

his is the year of the Norwegian bicentennial. In the constitution signed on May 17, 1814,

paragraph one also served as a Norwegian declaration of independence. Norway did not succeed in achieving its independence in 1814, but it succeeded in establishing Norway as a separate country with one of the most democratic governments in the world.

Norway had been a separate and independent country before, but that independence was lost in the year 1387. For the next 400 years Norway was ruled from Copenhagen. During this period there were numerous wars with Sweden. Then came the Napoleonic Wars. By 1807 the French armies under Napoleon had gained control of most of Europe, and to stay safe the Danish king declared his alliance with Napoleon. That was a disaster for Norway because the British fleet prevented almost all exports from Norway and the import of food Norwegians needed to avoid starvation. Since Sweden was allied with Britain it also resulted in another war between Norway and Sweden. One of Napoleon’s generals, Carl Johan, had been appointed Crown Prince and Regent of Sweden. Carl Johan agreed to have Swedish armies join the fight against Napoleon if the major powers would allow him to force Denmark to transfer Norway to Sweden, and in January 1814, he made the King of Denmark sign a peace treaty that transferred Norway to Swedish rule.

When the Norwegians learned this they were very upset. Sweden had been an enemy for hundreds of years. The Norwegian leaders were familiar with the American and the French revolutions, and the principles of people choosing its own government, and that rulers needed the consent of the people they governed. A constitutional convention was held, and on May 17 it declared Norway an independent country with executive

power in the hands of a cabinet selected by a king. It gave legislative power to an elected assembly, the Storting. The Crown Prince of Denmark was elected the first king.

The Swedes did not want to accept this. But Carl Johan was in a hurry, he realized that as soon as the threat from Napoleon was over it would be the King of Denmark, and not a commoner like him that would get the support of the big powers. So he agreed to sign a peace treaty, allowing the Norwegians to keep their constitution, as long as it was amended to make the King of Sweden also the King of Norway. On November 4, 1814, the revised constitution was adopted, the one from which Norway has been governed for two hundred years.

In the revised constitution Norway lost its independence, but it remained a separate country, governed by Norwegian law, with its own currency, its own parliament, its own military, and its own officials. Seven percent of the population could vote in national elections, more than in any other European country. Originally the members of the cabinet were the personal choices of the king, but in 1884 the cabinet was impeached for not advising the king to follow the wishes of the parliament. Since then the elected representatives also control the executive branch. In 1905 the king said he could not find any cabinet willing to serve under the policies he found acceptable, that was used as an excuse to remove him from office. So as of June 7, 1905 Norway again became an independent country with its own king.

It is still May 17 (Syttende Mai) that is celebrated as the Norwegian National Day. May 17, 1814, is the day when democracy was established, and the May 17 constitution is what made independence possible in 1905. For almost two hundred years it has been the source of celebrations of patriotism and love of country.

THE INDEPENDENCE PARTY A majority of delegates to the Constituent Assembly, around 80 in number, belonged to the independence party, dubbed the ‘Danish party’ by its opponents. Led by Christian Magnus Falsen, the party also included key figures such as Georg Sverdrup, P. Motzfeldt and Wilhelm Frimann Koren Christie. The independence party wanted Norway to immediately declare itself an independent country. It also wanted to restrict the role of the Constituent Assembly to framing the Constitution and electing a king. The independence party was dominated by public officials with close ties to Denmark through their education in Copenhagen and positions in the Danish public administration. The party also encompassed a majority of the farmer representatives in the Constituent Assembly.

THE UNIONIST PARTY The unionist party, whose members opposed complete independence for Norway, was in a minority in the Constituent Assembly. The unionist party had a stable core of around 20 people, led by Count Hermann Wedel Jarlsberg , Severin Løvenskiold, Nicolai Wergeland, Peder Anker and

Jacob Aall. The party was dubbed the ‘Swedish party’ by its opponents, but in fact all unionists claimed that they would have preferred independence if they had considered it possible to sustain. The party wanted to adapt the Constitution to a loose union with Sweden because they believed an independent Norway would be unable to defend itself against a Swedish attack. They were, moreover, incensed by the Danish-Norwegian foreign policy that had damaged trade with England.

GRUNNLOVSJUBILEET 1814 – 2014 When the Constituent Assembly’s 112 elected representatives arrived at Eidsvoll Verk on 10 April 1814, 57 of them were public officials, 18 were businessmen and 37 were farmers. 25 representatives came from the country’s towns, 54 from rural districts and 33 were drawn from the army and navy. It was a youthful assembly. Almost all the representatives were under 50 years of age, and around half were under 40. The youngest was only 17 years old. Few representatives had any political experience, and very few had held administrative office.
