It is with much pleasure, and a healthy dose of trepidation, that we invite you to attend our inaugural on property bull sale at “Kiah” Thangool.

It was an eventful year with drought, followed by an earth quake, then a cyclone and Beef Australia while building a sale complex. Our thanks go to Ben, Lecky, Shelley, Tony, Matt and Delforce Family for their invaluable help, in achieving our objectives along with Brad.

This year marks the 47th year since Santa Gertrudis blood was introduced by John McGuigan at “Kooyong” Monto. All present day cows are graded up breeders from this beginning. Apart from 3 Brahman bulls brought in the early 70’s Santa Gertrudis have been used exclusively. The herd has always been seasonally joined and annual pregnancy testing has been conducted since 1968.

After selling bulls with the Rockhampton Sale group for the last 12 years as well as private sale bulls locally, we made the decision to this year off er the bulls on the one day in the one place, and simplify the process.

This sale will be a little diff erent from the usual with the fi rst run of select bulls sold at Public Auction and the remainder of the draft off ered via an electronic Helmsman Auction, allowing bidders to operate on any bull regardless of catalogue order assisting with time and travel constraints. (Refer page 6)

This years draft are from a diverse range of 8 diff erent sire’s including the fi rst sons of Canowindra Jag J26 (P). Jag was the top priced Santa Gertrudis bull in 2012 and was the Grand Champion Bull at the World Congress that year. He was 3rd in the sires progeny at Beef 2015. These fi rst calves are very pleasing with good breed character, balance, confi rmation and large eye muscle area like their sire.

Lot 1 is the full embryo brother to Cree Juanita J217 (P) the Reserve Senior Champion Cow Beef 2015. He is by Warenda D696 (P) one of the leading EBV sires for the breed.

An Australian Cattle Vets (ACA) certifi cate will be supplied with each purchase by Kevin Agius, Biloela Veterinary Clinic.

TreatmentsAll lots will be pre treated prior to sale, for clearing.

EMA / Fat ScanAll bulls were scanned by David Reid at 600 days and submitted to Breedplan for recording. All lots will be scanned again prior to sale and actual sale weight/scan/scrotal measurement will be provided on supplementary sheets available the week before the sale. Daily gains will be calculated after 35kg birth weight has been deducted.

RefreshmentsMorning/afternoon tea and lunch will be available on sale day provided by Thangool State School P&C and Outback Connections.

Why Breedplan?We are members of Breedplan because we are interested in providing as much valuable and relevant data as possible on our bulls for your evaluation.

With the necessary obligations of acquiring 200, 400 and 600 day weights along with measuring eye muscle area, rib and rump fat depths, scrotal sizes and recording days to calving EBV’S, Breedplan allows us to keep our fi nger on the pulse of our herds performance. The collection of this data is objective, real performance and cannot be denied “in herd”. We believe this to be the most eff ective way of monitoring our herd’s performance and direction.

The Breedplan analysis is then the platform to measure our herd in comparison to other recorded studs within the Santa Gertrudis breed.

If you operate a self replacing herd, the bulls you buy this season may well infl uence the direction of your business for the next 10 to 15 years through the retention of their heifers.

This is where the true value of herd recording can be of most benefi t.

4. If you need more than one bull, Helmsman gives you fl exibility and time to average your purchase costs.

People say that the “Helmsman” system is buyer friendly because it helps them get better value for money. The simultaneous auction method enables them to switch to the best value animal at any time during the sale.

Why Public Auction and Helmsmans?We have introduced this to give buyers another option to buy within your budget and to keep a relaxed environment. The select bulls are available so buyers have the opportunity to buy early.

The Helmsman Selling SystemAuctions don’t have to be stressful environments.

This method of buying bulls combines the good features of both the auction system and sale by private treaty. You get the opportunity to bid on and buy any bull in the off ering and you pay competitive market value without any pressure.

YOU WILL BE GIVEN STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE THE SALE – AND THE AGENTS WILL BE THERE TO ASSIST WITH ANY QUESTIONS.

How the Helmsman System Works1. On arrival, the intending purchasers register, you will be

issued with a simple electronic hand piece, which will be used for bidding. Step by step instructions will be provided and the agents will be available to assist at all times.

2. All bulls are displayed for inspection as usual, with all animals numbered and catalogued.

3. At 11am when the sale commences, all bulls are on the market simultaneously. You may bid on any bull, regardless of lot number, via your electronic hand piece.

4. You may open the bidding according to the opening lot price as displayed and further bids in multiples of $500 will be accepted. There is no upper limit on the size of bids.

5. Bids are recorded with the buyers number on 2 x 50 inch television screens adjacent to the bull display area. You can bid on any number of bulls at once as your hand piece vibrates and displays on the screens, whether your bid still stands or has been overbid.

6. There is no pressure to commit yourself to another bid. If your fi rst choice bull goes over the limit you can still bid on any other bull on sale.

7. A bid once submitted and recorded cannot be retracted, and the person responsible for submitting such a bid will be responsible for it until it is overbid.

8. The sale will remain open for a specifi ed time after completion of the Open Auction. A bid registered in the last two minutes will result in a two minute time extension. Therefore there is no advantage to leave your bidding to the last minute.

9. Further bids would trigger the same process until no more bids are received in a specifi ed period, which would signify the end of the sale.

(Note that the bidding interval may remain at two minutes throughout or may be shortened progressively to as little as 15 seconds to speed up the sale.)

Mature Cow Weight: The Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is an estimate of the genetic diff erence in cow weight at 5 years of age. Lower or more moderate EBVs are generally more favourable.

CARCASECarcase Weight: The Carcase Weight EBV (kg) estimates the genetic diff erence in carcase weight at a standard age of 650 days.

Eye Muscle Area: The EMA EBV (cm2) estimates genetic diff erences in eye muscle area at the 12/13th rib site of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling.

Rib Fat: The Rib Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic diff erences in fat depth at the 12/13th rib in a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity.

Rump Fat: The Rump Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic diff erences in fat depth at the P8 site of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity.

Retail Beef Yield Percent: The RBY% EBV (%) represents total (boned out) meat yield as a percentage of a 300kg dressed carcase. A more positive EBV indicates higher percentage yield for the 300kg carcase size.

Intramuscular Fat Percent: The IMF% EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic diff erence in the percentage of intra-muscular

fat at the 12/13th rib site in a 300kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.

ACCURACYAn accuracy value is presented with every EBV and gives an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy, the lower the likelihood of change in the animal’s EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or its relatives.

Accuracy Range InterpretationLess than 50% The EBVs are preliminary. EBVs in this range

will have been calculated based on very little information. These EBVs could change substantially as more direct performance information becomes available on the animal

50 - 74% The EBVs are of medium accuracy. EBVs in this range will usually have been calculated based on the animal’s own performance and some limited pedigree information.

75 – 90% The EBVs are of medium-high accuracy. EBVs in this range will usually have been calculated based on the animal’s own performance coupled with the performance for a small number of the animal’s progeny.

90% and above The EBVs are a high accuracy estimate of the animal’s true breeding value. It is unlikely that EBVs will change considerably with addition of more progeny data.

The EBVs contained within this catalogue can be validly compared with other Santa Gertrudis GROUP BREEDPLAN EBVs. These EBVs can not be used to compare animals of another breed.

Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs)An animal’s breeding value is its genetic merit, half of which will be passed on to its progeny. While we will never know the exact breeding value, for performance traits it is possible to make good estimates. These are called Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs). The EBV is therefore the best estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for that trait. EBVs are expressed as the diff erence between an individual animal’s genetics and the genetic base to which the animal is compared.

BirthGestation Length: The GL EBV (days) is based on AI records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation length and generally easier calving.

Birth Weight: The Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a diffi cult birth occurring. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.

FertilityScrotal Size: The SS EBV (cm) is an indicator of male fertility in regards to semen quality and quantity. Scrotal circumference measurements are taken between 300 and 700 days and

adjusted to 400 days of age. Higher (positive) EBVs indicate higher fertility. SS is also positively associated with female fertility.

Day to Calving: The DTC EBV (days) is an indicator of female fertility based on the time between a cows fi rst exposure to a bull and when she subsequently calved. Cows that calve late in the season or fail to calve are penalised. Lower (negative) EBV’s are preferred indicating shorter days to calving for the sires daughters.

GrowthMilk: 200-Day Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal’s milking ability. For sires, this EBV is indicative of their daughter’s milking ability as it aff ects the 200-day weight of their calves.

200 Day Growth: The 200-Day EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth to early ages.

400 Day Weight: The 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for yearling weight.

600 Day Weight: The 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days


Canowindra Jag was the 2012 World Congress Grand ChampionSanta Gertrudis bull.We purchased him for the Australian top price of $56,000 in 2012. At 32mths he was 1200kg with 150 cm eye muscle area and 41cm scrotal circumference. Immediately he was collected at Rocky Repro where he produced 856 straws from two collections at 81% Morphology. In his fi rst two seasons he sired 151 claves before sustaining a partial tear to the cruciate ligament in his stifl e, sadly resulting in the inability to serve. We are pleased with the appeal and performance of the fi rst off ering of Jag calves. Most have their sires balance, muscle, broad top lines and faultless temperament. His ability to combine muscle and maintain excellent fat cover as evidenced by his EBV’s is a feature.His calves appeared to be so small we began to record birth weights for confi rmation. Over approx 20 calves ranged from 27 to 40 kg and avg 34kg. This is slightly less than what is considered to be the breed avg for birth wt. However due to the high correlation between birth wt and 200 day wt Breedplan has assumed his calves would be bigger.This is not the case. However, rapid growth from birth to weaning has resulted in his high 200 day EBV.

CANOWINDRA JAG J26 (P)

Jag is represented by lots: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 25, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 41, 49, 50, 64 and 65.

Although the accuracy of an EBV should be considered, animals should be compared on EBVs regardless of accuracy. Where two animals have the same EBV however, the animal with the higher accuracy would normally be used more heavily than the bull with the lower accuracy because the results can be predicted with more confi dence

Selection IndicesThe Selection Index value for an animal is eff ectively an EBV of the animal’s profi tability for a defi ned commercial production system and market end-point. Ranking bulls on their Selection Index value sorts them based on their progeny’s expected diff erences in profi tability for the targeted production system.

As a guide to using Selection Indexes, it is recommended that producers complete the following steps:(i) Identify the Selection Index of most relevance to your

production system(ii) Rank animals on the Selection Index(iii) Consider the individual EBVs of importance(iv) Consider other traits of importance that may not be

accounted for in the selection index (eg. temperament, structural soundness)

There are currently two diff erent selection indexes calculated for Santa Gertrudis association animals. Each Selection Index describes a specifi c production system and market scenario as described below:

Domestic Production IndexEstimates the genetic diff erences between animals in net profi tability per cow joined for an example self-replacing commercial herd (run in a temperate environment) producing steers for the domestic trade. This Index assumes

that the steer progeny are pasture grown and fi nished and marketed at 500 kg live weight (280 kg HSCW and 12 mm P8 fat depth) at 16 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding

Export Production IndexEstimates the genetic diff erences between animals in net profi tability per cow joined for an example commercial herd (run in a sub-tropical environment) producing steers for the export trade. This Index assumes that the steer progeny are pasture grown and fi nished and are marketed at 620 kg live weight (340 kg HSCW and 15 mm P8 fat depth) at 28 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding.

Ferrero F140 (ET) (AI) (P) was retained out of an IVF program.

He is by Top Gun 244 (P) (USA). He was used in our heifers and 2x cows for the fi rst few seasons until his calves begin to shine through. This, along with his perfect sheath, early reproductive traits and “oh so quite temperament” saw him elevated to stud duties.

Ferrero F140 (P) had an Eye Muscle Area of 102cm at 400 days and his muscling is consistently reproduced through the progeny. His steers were fed at Mort & Co last year and had extremely good gains of around 2.7kg/day.

Ferrero is represented by lots: 16, 17, 45, 48, 67 and 69.

CREE FERRERO F140 (AI) (P)Director D130 (P) was retained as a sire due to damaging a hind foot as a calf, and being considered a risk to sell on.

He was a natural calf from our best Donor Dam Cree Y371. His full brother Cree Equator E198 (P) sold to Ross Parkinson and family for $20,000 while his half brother Cree Improvement (AI) was also retained. Two bulls from her are in the sale in Lots 1 and 9. Director also sired one of our most performed show heifers in Cree Georgia G195. His progeny are generally long bodied, sound and good coated cattle, with excellent temperament.

Director is represented by lots: 2, 14, 15, 21, 22, 23, 24, 33, 34, 37, 38, 39, 40, 42, 47 and 56.

Gambler G128 (P) is by Dangarfi eld Quatro Q52.

Gambler was very successful in the show ring in central Queensland; winning Interbreed Grand Championships at Springsure, Theodore, Callide Valley and Monto shows. Gambler is one of the quietest bulls we have had the pleasure of breeding and handling.

He has a faultless temperament, slick fi ne coat, very good sheath and testicles with the length, and easy fi nishing ability of his sire before him as indicated by his excellent fat EBVs.

Gambler is represented by lots: 20 and 46.

CREE GAMBLER G128 (P)Frankenstein F088 (AI) (PS) was retained for use in the stud being mostly new blood as his Dam was also an AI product by Wave Hill Major (P).

He has a very fi ne, slick coat type, early sexual maturity and the heavy muscling of the Top Gun 244 (P) (USA) line. His steer progeny also fed at Mort & Co gaining to a top of 3.03kg/day which is consistent with Carcass EBV of +22 for which he is a trait leader.

Frankenstein is represented by lots: 26, 35, 36, 44, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 57 and 58.

Warenda D696 (P) was used in several IVF programs. He was selected for optimal growth and high muscling along with being a homozygous poll, so all his calves are polled accordingly.
