Make Myself at HoMeby Sarah Sinclair

a Charming Discovery on Grand avenueavenueaI

thought I knew Grand Avenue. I used to live on Grand, for goodness’ sake. The house we lived in almost 30 years ago will forever be frozen

in my mind as the quirky house with the best view that I’ll likely ever “own.” But as I drove up the winding east end of Valerio Street last week, simultaneously mean-dering down memory lane and looking for 1410 Grand, I reached a dead-end, lit-erally, when the lowest house numbers ended firmly in the 1500s. Fortunately my iPhone came to my rescue, bringing me back to the present and revealing a whole other portion of Grand Avenue that I had heretofore yet to meet: a little one-block cul-de-sac of about six homes, which make up the 1400 block of Grand Avenue.

Looking up at 1410 Grand, everything about it is inviting, starting with its set-ting: high — but not too high — above street level. A quintessential red-tiled roof crowns a two-story Mediterranean façade with large, distinctive wood-framed windows looking back at me. A golden Santa Barbara stone wall hugs the lot and embellishes the garage, inviting visitors to walk up the wide red staircase. As I do exactly that, the first landing pres-ents a bubbling lion fountain framed with greenery, offering a greeting both formal and friendly. I pass two separate front-yard areas, one on either side of the house, as I continue walking up and around the circular stairway toward the front porch.

From this vantage point, I find it impossible not to turn for a quick peek at the view. Yep, it matches my remem-bered favorite view from almost 30 years ago. Santa Barbara changes only subtly over time, and the view from the Riviera out over downtown, sloping down to the

harbor, ocean, and islands beyond, is one of the constants that affirms our place.

Turning back to the house, the front door itself stops me in my tracks. A heavy decorative glass window sits above a brass knob in the center of the door that twists to chime and announce a visitor, and crowns an intricate door handle below. Flanked by columns on either side, this threshold certainly qualifies as a grand entrance, but the overall impression is cheerful period charm rather than grandeur.

As you step into the foyer, a beauti-ful living room stretches to the left. Huge windows encompass the entire front wall and frame the fireplace on the far side, with a wide archway leading to the dining room beyond. Curved entries and arches

recur throughout the house, soften-ing the natural light that streams in from every angle, creating a bright, open, and yet cozy feeling.

The home was built in 1928, and the period cabinetry, details, and built-ins have all been preserved. The windows are particularly notable. Many have multiple wood panes in a variety of symmetrical patterns. They are authentic and true to the era, yet every drawer and window glides as effortlessly as its 21st-century coun-

terpart. In addition to the living and dining rooms, this main floor contains two bed-rooms and a bathroom, plus a gorgeous updated kitchen filled with built-in cabinets and storage space that is both

functional and beautiful. Even though the kitchen sits in the back of the house, the open floor plan allows views to the front through the dining and living room, and out to the side and backyard, as well.

In fact every view out every window of this house is picturesque, providing either an expansive scene of the city to the ocean out the front, or an idyllic view of the patios, gardens, and greenery to the side or back. Other than wishing I could erase the power lines, it is perfect. Even the proximity of the neighbor’s house next door doesn’t impact the privacy, and their red-tiled roof is storybook beautiful.

The backyard is an inviting study in ideal use of a compact space. It contains separate elevated decks flanking a large level dining area, plus intimate patios and walkways on the sides. Tall hedges and artful plantings define the spaces and lend a backdrop of green serenity, with a fountain providing a natural tinkling soundtrack.

Back inside, a polished wood staircase leads to the lower level and offers another example of yesteryear charm combined with recent attention to detail. Each orig-inal stair slopes slightly downward yet has a solid feel and has been refinished to gleam with each step.

Downstairs contains another bed-room and bath, plus an additional living room, which could be used as a fourth bedroom or left as is to offer a complete living arrangement on this level. The center of this floor is a bar area with a large pass-through window into the liv-ing room. Neighborhood lore has it that during prohibition this home contained a bootleg wine distillery in this exact spot. Standing here, it’s easy to envision the scene and imagine these and many other stories from throughout the years.

This home is in pristine, move-in con-dition, but its original charm abounds throughout. As I say good-bye and give 1410 Grand a long last gaze, I feel as if I’ve discovered not just another block of Grand Avenue but another piece of Santa Barbara’s history, pieced together like the patchwork of streets that I follow back toward downtown.

1410 Grand Avenue is currently for sale in Santa Barbara, listed by Josiah Hamilton of The Hamilton Co. of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties. Reach Josiah at 284-8835 or [email protected].

his simplified late-Gothic-revival-style residence was con-structed about 1890,

probably by A.B. Caldwell, a carpenter/builder. He is listed as residing here in the 1895 city directory but only for a short period of time. By 1905, lithographer Emile Charles and his wife resided there for the next two-plus decades. In 1943, Charles Ingram, the owner of an auto-repair shop, lived here until 1974.

Over the years, the property has undergone a few alterations, which include enclosing one side of the front porch and dividing the property into two apartments.

Distinguishing architectural hallmarks include the following:

• T-shaped configuration• One-and-a-half stories • Decorative scrollwork in brackets along front porch• Steeply pitched roof with symmetrical design• Three gables: two on each side and one over the entrance• Double-hung windows• Three octagonal bay windows: one upstairs and two downstairs • 98 percent shiplap siding (originally 100 percent) and 2 percent fish-

scale siding, placed on the upstairs window facing Castillo Street

Probable original owner and architectural designer: Arthur B. Caldwell

Approximate year built: 1890

“We’re eclectic,” said Dennis Thompson, president of Thompson Naylor Archi-

tects, an area firm with a formidable foothold in sustainability for more than 25 years. “We’ll do traditional; we’ll do contemporary or kind of a blend.”

Thompson said his firm’s clientele is about 70 percent residential, 30 percent nonprofits, such as religious institutions and private schools and 90 percent of their work is in Santa Barbara County, mostly on the South Coast.

As part of the Green Building Alliance of Santa Barbara, Thompson Naylor has long championed sustainable design,

organizing solar design and related con-ferences since the early 1980s. His firm— cofounded by his professional partner of 30 years, Susette Naylor of 30 years, Susette Naylor of 30 years, Susette Naylor— has become an award-winning leader in environ-mentally correct building.

Working in the shadow of Santa Barbara’s historically dominant Span-ish Colonial Revival style has not been overly oppressive, Thompson said, largely because beyond El Pueblo Viejo District, fidelity to the Mediterranean style is not an issue.

There are other single-family-unit design boards to impress — in Summer-land, Goleta, etc.

“We almost always have to pay atten-tion to some kind of regional compat-ibility. Within that regime, there’s a cer-tain kind of freedom.”One of his proud-est achievements is the three-couple residence Victoria Garden Mews. “The people had their heart and soul in it,” Thompson said.

Thompson first became environ-mentally conscious while attending UC Berkeley (following Princeton under-grad) during the 1974 Arab oil embargo. “That was a wake-up call to everybody,” he said. “[As architects], we’re part of the problem and part of the solution.”

Thanks to his first wife’s UCSB schooling, the Angeleno came to Santa Barbara and never left. The Community Environmental Council is where he “got a second education,” becoming an early green adopter.

The good news is that California leads the way nationally in codifying the very energy-conservation advocacy he once

battled for. “It hasn’t always been easy to convince people to spend extra to make their homes green. Now it’s legislated, so we don’t have to argue it,” Thompson said. All new California houses must have net-zero energy by 2020; commer-cial buildings, by 2030.

“The beauty of Cali is we haven’t had to build a power plant in 30 years,” Thompson said. “Our standard is the level of European countries. We’re comparable to Sweden and Germany. I’m absolutely proud to be a resident of a state that takes global warming seriously.”

Thompson enjoys new challenges. In 2008, the longtime Mesa resident cofounded Mesa Architects (mesavillage.org).village.org).village.org Their biggest accomplish-ment: turning Cliff Drive into a bike-friendly neighborhood street instead of a city highway.

“It felt great to have normally com-peting architects collaborating,” he said.

backyard wildlife by Sally Isaacson

I stayed at a hotel near Cottage Hospital once, and I soon discovered that a northern mockingbird was staying there also. At first this bird annoyed me, especially as it seemed to sing all night and kept me awake. Soon, however, my annoyance turned to fascination, and I researched the species online.

Later, when I went home, I studied up on mockingbirds in all of my bird books. The northern mockingbird is not particularly rare and is found in a variety of

habitats. It is quite commonly observed in Santa Barbara and in other urban and suburban areas. This bird is known for its loud, mimicking song. The scientific name of the northern mockingbird, Mimus polyglottos, means “many-tongued mimic” due to the fact that these birds can mimic many sounds.

They most often imitate the sounds of various birds, but their repertoire may also include sounds such as those of frogs and car alarms. Mockingbirds continue to learn new sounds throughout their lives and have been known to learn as many as 200 sounds. A mockingbird will often sing 10-15 different songs at a stretch, and it will repeat each one several times before going on to a new song.

These birds are very territorial and are nearly always seen singly. They are omnivorous and feed on fruit, seeds, insects, earthworms, and sometimes even lizards. Last year I spent a long time watching and listening to a mockingbird in my orchard. This bird had set up residence in my persimmon tree, with its glowing orange fruit, and seemingly defended the tree against invaders as a soldier might defend his or her fort.

Mockingbirds are also known for their intelligence. They have been shown to recognize individual humans and may act defensively when confronted with a person who has previously threatened them. They will even choose to return to nest in an area where they had successfully nested in a previous season.

Both male and female northern mockingbirds look alike and are fairly ordinary looking. They are medium-sized, pale gray birds with short bills and long tails. They do, however, have striking white outer tail feathers and white wing patches that flash when they fly.

Formerly director of education at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, Sally Isaacson is now the education/volunteer coordinator at the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County’s Arroyo Hondo Preserve at Gaviota.

Mockingbird?

Northern mockingbird

history 101by Michael Redmon

The Alhecama Theatre at 914 Santa Barbara Street was christened by Alice Schott, shortly after she

and her husband purchased the property in 1939. The name is derived from the first two letters of each of her four daughters’ names: Alice, Helen, Catherine, and Mary Lou. The woman who gave the theater its name was one of the city’s most active commu-nity leaders for some 50 years.

Alice Florence Touhy was born in Nebraska on June 17, 1881, the anniversary, she later liked to point out, of the battle of Bunker Hill. As a young child, she took up painting, and this love of art would stay with her for the rest of her life. A second lifelong interest came from her days at nursing school in Denver; she became very involved in women’s health issues.

In Denver she met German native Max Schott, who made his U.S. fortune in mining and metals. They married in 1912. In 1920, the couple moved to Santa Barbara, it being Max Schott’s intention to retire. He changed his mind, and for many years the Schotts maintained homes both here and in New York City, where Alice became especially interested in housing issues in Harlem. In the 1930s, the couple helped bring many German refugees fleeing Nazi oppression to the U.S.

In Santa Barbara, Alice joined the Woman’s Club. As president in 1927-28, she was one of the prime movers in raising $72,000 to secure the Rockwood site in Mission Canyon for the club, using her own money to initially purchase the property.

In 1939, the Schotts bought the theater and surrounding complex of buildings in the 900 block of Santa Barbara Street to save them from destruction. Alice hoped to revive the Community Arts Association, which had been headquartered there and which had been brought low by the Depression. Then in 1945, the complex was transferred to the Santa Barbara Unified School District, which at that time ran the city’s adult education programs. The Alhecama Center served as an adult education headquarters for 30 years. Adult education moved to the former Garfield School at 310 West Padre Street in 1980, and the school was renamed the Alice F. Schott Continuing Education Center the following year, in recognition of her contributions to education in the city.

Max Schott died in 1955, but Alice continued her philanthropy and activism. She was instrumental in founding Planned Parenthood here and was active with the Vis-iting Nurse Association. She counted among her friends Margaret Sanger, a national leader in women’s health issues, and Katherine McCormick, one of the chief financial supporters involving development of the birth-control pill. Both McCormick and Schott were major supporters of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Schott served on the museum board as well as the boards of the Santa Barbara Foundation and the Lobero Theatre Foundation, among others. She was selected Santa Barbara’s Woman of the Year in 1962.

Alice Schott died in 1971. Her impact on Santa Barbara was immense. As one observer put it upon the occasion of her passing, “All activities which gave promise of enriching the life, exciting the mind, relieving the suffering of the unfortunate, com-manded her interest and effective support.”

Michael Redmon, director of research at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, will answer your questions about Santa Barbara’s history. Write him c/o The Santa Barbara Independent, 12 East The Santa Barbara Independent, 12 East The Santa Barbara IndependentFigueroa Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101.
