OUR DEEPEST NEEDS
T he word of God serves up a tremendous feast for us today. Isai-ah beckons all who hunger and thirst to come to the Lord for sat-isfaction. The psalmist cries
out, “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers al l our needs” (Psalm 145:16). Saint Paul tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Finally, in the Gospel, we hear the story of the miraculous feeding of over five thousand people from a mere five loaves and two fish. Most of us have our material needs met on a day-to-day basis. These scriptures, nevertheless, have much to say to the contemporary believer. We must ask ourselves, “Where are my deepest hungers? Where are my thirsts?” After material needs are satis-fied and, in some cases, over-satisfied, many people still experience a deep longing for spiritual balance and well-being. As the loaves and fish are multiplied in today’s Gospel, perhaps our prayer can be a longing for the satisfaction of the deepest needs that only God can fill. -Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
IMAGINING GOD’S ABUNDANCE
W hen reflecting upon today’s Gospel passage from Matthew, the story of the feeding of the multitude, we might consider the role of Jesus’ disciples. Unlike
the very similar story in Matthew 15, Jesus responds to the disciples by saying, “Give them some food yourselves”. Jesus is pushing his disciples to think beyond the apparent scarcity, and to open their imaginations to God’s abundance. They are to join in with what God is doing. Jesus then takes, blesses, breaks, and shares the bread (anticipating his action at the Last Supper), and the disci-ples share the loaves with the crowd. The stories of the feeding of the multitudes also point ahead to the practice of Eucharist in the Church. The Eucharist itself points ahead to God’s banquet at the consummation of the reign of God, when all will share God’s abundance. We the Church are called to open our imagi-nations to God present and active, who continually works toward God’s promised future. We are to share in God’s passionate desire to feed the people, and join in what God is doing here and now. -Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

NUESTRAS NECESIDADES MÁS PROFUNDAS
L a Palabra de Dios nos brinda hoy una tremenda fiesta. Isaías llama a todos los que tienen hambre y sed para que vengan a satisfacerse en el Señor. El sal-
mista proclama: “Abres tú la mano, y sacias de favores a todo vivien-te” (Salmo 145:16). San Pablo nos dice que nada puede separarnos del amor de Dios. Finalmente, en el Evangelio, escuchamos sobre el milagro de la multi-plicación de los cinco panes y dos pes-cados con que se alimentaron a más de cinco mil personas. Nuestras necesidades diarias suelen estar cubier-tas. Sin embargo, estas lecturas tienen mucho que decir al creyente contemporáneo. Debemos preguntarnos: “¿Dónde está mi hambre más profunda? ¿De qué estoy sediento?”. Una vez satisfechas las necesida-des materiales y, en algunos casos, más que satisfechas, mucha gente sigue ansiando tener equilibrio y bienestar espiritual. Al multiplicarse los panes y pescados en el Evangelio de hoy, tal vez nuestra oración es anhelar que nuestras necesidades más hondas sean satisfechas por el único que puede hacerlo: Dios. -Copyright © J. IMAGINANDO LA ABUNDANCIA DE DIOS
A l reflexionar hoy en el pasaje del Evangelio de Mateo, la his-toria de alimentar a la multitud, podríamos considerar el pa-pel de los discípulos de Jesús. A dife-
rencia de la historia muy similar en Mateo 15, Jesús responde a los discípulos diciéndoles “denles ustedes de comer”. Jesús fomenta a sus discípulos a pensar más allá de la aparente escasez, y a abrir su imaginación a la abun-dancia de Dios. Deben unirse a lo que Dios está haciendo. Entonces Jesús toma, bendice, parte y comparte el pan (anticipando lo que hará en la Última Cena), y los discípulos comparten los panes con la multitud. Las historias en donde se alimenta a las multitudes también apuntan a la practica de la Eucaristía en la Iglesia. La Eucaristía mis-ma apunta hacia el banquete de Dios en la consumación del reino de Dios, cuando todos compartiremos la abundancia de Dios. Nosotros, la Iglesia, se nos llama a abrir nuestra imaginación a Dios presente y activo, que obra continuamente hacia el futuro prometido de Dios.
