SYNOPSIS
The Brothers Grimm hit the stage with an epic fairytale about wishes, family and the choices we make. James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece... and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching. The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

A SEASON OF COURAGE Director’s Note
Amy Luskey-Barth, MPC
We aren’t out of the woods yet. As I compose this director’s note for the Talon Theatre 2020 spring musical Into the Woods Tribute, the COVID-19 Pandemic rages on. Our last rehearsal together in the dome was on March 14th. A surreal, eerie atmosphere hung in the air as the tech crew valiantly put the finishing touches on a set that would sit actor-less on the stage. The costume crew worked frantically to finish fittings, making last minute alterations to costumes that would hang in the choir room neatly organized for a check out that would never happen. The woods chorus worked through transitions that would never be executed and the cast of prin-cipal players, somber and focused, earnestly followed my futile attempt to fix this and tweak that for a show that would not go on. Fortunately, we have a video of that final rehearsal in the dome – now a haunting memory of a moment in time that preceded the full weight of the reality of what lay ahead. At the time of this writing, the death toll from COVID-19 has surpassed the number of lives lost in the Viet Nam war. This invisible giant invaded our lives, robbed the class of 2020 of their senior year and Talon Theatre of their spring musical. These are once in a life-time events that went boom-squish. And after the shock that our lives had been completely upended be-gan to wear off, grief washed over us with its familiar stages – disbelief, denial, anger, and at last, acceptance. We’ll never completely get over the loss of Into the Woods. There will always be a hole in the history of Talon Theatre where there might have been M.A.C.Y. Awards, CAPPIES and acclaim for the talent and brilliance of an ensemble of actors and technicians who exquisitely performed this Sondheim masterpiece. But despite the many disappointments, another story began to immerge from the rubble of what might have been. Once upon a time, in a socially distanced kingdom of Talon Theatre, a group of dedicated, committed and tenacious performers went back into a virtual woods to get their wish. Navigating an unknown path, they per-severed. They battled spotty WiFi connections, technical challenges and endured hours of isolated ZOOM re-hearsals running scenes and songs alone in their bedrooms with only their imagination and a computer screen for company. The resilience, creativity and passion that these students have exhibited is inspirational and the effort, nothing short of Herculean. I could not be prouder of what they have accomplished. While for so long the path had strayed from us, finally the way became clear. I would venture to say that we’ve all learned things now, many valuable things that we hadn’t thought to explore! We’ve learned that into the woods, you have to grope but that’s the way you learn to cope and with-out a doubt that no one is alone because now there’s you, me, her and him. Our SEASON OF COURAGE has proven to test us more than we ever could have imagined. But now we know that everything you learn there will help when you return there! There are many lessons from this journey Into the Woods that we will process for a very long time. While this has been a rollercoaster of emotions, my overwhelming feeling is of gratitude. I am grateful for the gift of theatre in my life and for a thirty-plus year career of purpose-driven work in educational theatre. I am grateful for my performing arts department colleagues and friends, Chris Winn, Francisco Calvo, Annette Melosini, JeanneAnn Faris, and Justin Gagnon for their generous and tireless commitment to this project. I am grateful for my other artistic collaborators, Casey Garritano, Todd Faux, Mike Ritchey, David Tehero, Cynthia Karim and Holly Nellesen for their immense contribution to the production. I am grateful to the parents of the cast and crew for their belief in the value of an arts education. I am grateful for the community of Santa Margarita Catholic High School, its faculty, staff and administration, for rallying to support Talon Theatre. I am grateful for my health, my family and the gift of whatever time we can spend together. I am especially grateful to this cast and crew – my students – for teaching me that children will listen… So now tell them the story of how it all happened… and remember things will come out right now…we can make it so…someone is on your side. No one is alone. Caritas Christi, Amy Luskey-Barth

What a wonderful way to start, what a great way to finish! For you two! Into the Woods, the Witch and the Wolf! Is not to say I wish, but I do, wish that you continue loving so much what you do. As time went by, we saw you grow as artists, but your number one thing is that you do Everything, from the heart. And now to another journey, be always careful of what you wish but don’t ever be afraid to go Into de Woods. Mamá and Papá
