Upgrading or Migrating Scenario
1. Upgrade BW system from 7.x to 7.3
Upgrade from ABAP version 7.50 to version 7.53 by performing the following steps:
1. Upgrade CMPBPC from 7.50 to 7.53.
2. Upgrade the Planning and Consolidation .Net server and client software to the equivalent support package of 7.53
3. Upgrade SAP NetWeaver 7.0x to SAP NetWeaver 7.30.
2. Upgrade BW system from 7.x to 7.4
• You need to upgrade first to BPC 7.53 and BW7.3, then you need to install the BPC 10 ABAP component. Next step is
upgrading from BW 7.3 to BW 7.4 and migrating the database to SAP HANA, and then adding the HANABPC
accelerator.
• BPC 7.54 NW (starts from SP02), are supported and available for productive usage on SAP NetWeaver BW 7.40,
powered by SAP HANA, but does not include HANA specific performance optimization. It uses HANA in the same way
as it does for conventional database. (SAP Note 1923480)
3. Migrating to new system (From BPC 7.5 to BPC 10.x)
The other option is to procure an entirely new system, starting with new hardware. Once procured, it can be set up with
NetWeaver on HANA. Then BPC and its accelerator for HANA can be installed, and the system can be validated. All this without
even touching the 7.5 system. The application sets (environments in BPC 10) can be brought over using transaction code
UJBR.
In-place upgrade
• Complex
• Disrupted
• High Risk
A system copy followed by an upgrade is
an interesting compromise, as it avoids the
disruption and risk of the in-place upgrade,
while keeping its benefits, with the exception
of the savings on hardware.
Migrating
• Limited Disruption
• Limited Risk
• Benfit using new hardware

Why upgrade to BPC 10
1. Streamlined, Unified, and Harmonized User Experience. One of the more obvious improvements of version 10 is its new and
improved look and feel. 10’s new user console pulls functionality into one central user interface offering users more intuitive,
streamlined control. The more visually appealing, browser-driven user interface is unified with SAP’s other EPM products,
creating a common interface and seamless user experience throughout the EPM suite. The improved user experience will
increase the speed of planning and consolidations by increasing the numbers of people contributing.
2. Enhanced Manageability. 10 enhances manageability and reduces cost of ownership by improving integration with the SAP
NetWeaver technology platform, ERP software, and other business analytics applications.
3. Improved Reporting. 10 enables users to create seamless links to other reporting applications improving the function of drilling
down to detailed information outside of BPC applications, and even the SAP environment. 10 also improves reporting drag
and drop functionality.
4. Improved System Performance, Integrity and Maintenance. 10 now uses the in-memory database to make applications run
faster. It increases data handling and business intelligence (BI) capabilities. Now, objects and information stored and
aggregated in one BusinessObjects application can be shared more widely with another. 10 also eliminates the .NET server
on the NetWeaver platform, streamlining the hardware architecture and better integrating security with the NetWeaver
backend. 10’s transformational architecture changes eliminate manual reporting efforts. Backend system improvements yield
industry-leading validation and monitoring of data integrity. SAP effectively re-developed the entire BPC solution to better fit
into the SAP landscape.
5. Expanded Mobile Delivery Options. Version 10 offers expanded mobile device support for the Apple iPAD and RIM BlackBerry
PlayBook tablets, helping transform the way people work.
6. Enhanced Journal Management. Journals are now entered via a new, intuitive, web-based frontend with an improved query
manager that allows users to better investigate entries.
7. Simplified Hierarchy Maintenance. New functionality in 10 allows simple, drag and drop hierarchy builds.
8. Specific Industry or Line of Business Packaged Solutions. Version 10 now offers packaged solutions for specific lines of
business and industry areas.

What’s New on BPC 10.1 Unified Model ?
With SAP BPC NW 10.1 a new data model is introduced that combines the strength of the different planning components
• SAP BPC NW for end-user friendliness and flexibility
• SAP BW-IP for feature richness and integrated data consistency
• SAP HANA for blazingly high performance
The former was focusing on line-of-business driven scenarios with a strong focus on flexibility and end-user friendliness.
The ‘embedded’ model complements the existing BPC NW data model which is called ‘standard’. The new model is completely
integrated into the BPC NW 10.1 product, in particular using its new HTML5 web-client for administration and runtime as well as
the EPM EXCEL add-in. This ensures a unified end-user experience, hiding many of the technical details. Doing so, it also
requires the BPC NW license.
For BPC NW ‘standard’ (orange components), the ‘BPC add-on’ is required, which contains the specific planning and reporting
logic of BPC and collaboration features. It sits on SAP BW, but only uses its reporting and some of its data management
capabilities. The add-on also provides connectivity to the EPM EXCEL add-in. An additional add-on is available to make use of
HANA for specific functions and acceleration purposes.
These add-ons are not required for the BPC NW ‘embedded’ model. It rather fully uses the reporting and planning capabilities of
BW as well as its data warehousing and data management. The collaboration-capabilities were adjusted to this architecture and
moved into SAP BW (grey component). The BPC HTML5 web-client has also moved to SAP BW and connects to both, the
‘standard’ and the ‘embedded’ models for modelling and runtime. In addition a new interface is contained in SAP BW to connect
to the EPM add-in, in addition to the existing connections to Analysis Office and Design Studio. Finally SAP HANA is mandatory
for the BPC ‘embedded’ model to facilitate best performance on highly flexible data models.

The approach they seem to have taken is to merge the IP back-end with some of the SAP BPC front-end functionality.
For example:
•The underlying SAP BW cubes are modelled like IP cubes, using BW infoobjects, rather than BPC dimensions
•Planning functions are still developed using the IP functionality
•The EPM Add-In is the front end for interacting with the unified planning model
•The BPC 10.1 web front end is the web portal for interacting with the unified planning model
•Certain BPC 10.1 features, such as BPFs, work status and data auditing are available.
