Why SAP HANA on BW
Our current BW was running out of space and no expansion
possibility existed within the BW application.
Only possible solution was to migrate to SAP HANA.
Approach
Internally startup a SAP HANA Platform Evaluation discussion
Conduct PoC of selected solution
OS Version = Linux Suse 11
HANA version = Hana sps 9
Evaluate result
Start a Tender

Platform Scenarios
Both scenarios must run on HANA certified hardware and OS.

SAP BW on Hana installation / Spec
The TDI solution for SAP BW on Hana was preferred
We required a 4 system landscape environment (Development, QA,
Production and a Sandbox system) in order to insure stability.
Following the guideline of the sizing / tool and in order to foresee future
growth … (Scalability is important !!)
Current DB size of BI is 3.1TB, (compressed BI SAP 300GB)
DR must be a part of the solution.

SAP BW on Hana POC findings
The following results are measured “out of the box” on the HANA
PoC system where only the mandatory post-migration steps are
completed.
Post migration optimization and in some cases remodeling is
necessary to reap the full benefits so the results should only be
considered preliminary.
PoC ahead of time plan.

Load of Profit Center Accounting data
Most BW loads are executing at night where load time is not so
critical as long as data is available in the morning.
Some chains like Profit Center Accounting for previous period is,
however, often run additional times during working hours as part of
the time sensitive monthly closing process where reduced runtime
would be beneficial.

Query Performance
Most queries today utilize the BW Accelerator and are therefore not
expected to improve significantly with HANA
Queries directly on line item tables should improve significantly,
especially on the data extraction step
