There are R/3 users at all ends of thespectrum. The small- and medium-sizedenterprise benets from the business pro-cesses of the SAP system just as the globalgiants do. For years R/3 was ne-tuned,constantly expanded, and enriched withe-business functions. Some customers kepton adapting the client-server package overtime to meet their own changing needs, while others adhered strictly to the standard, and even today have not moved one jot
from it.For many companies that have implement-ed R/3, the functionality will suffice to ful-ll their business requirements in the fore-seeable future. SAP is safeguarding itsusers investment and planning by extend-ing the maintenance for the euro-enabledreleases as of R/3 3.1I and above up until
August 2003. SAP has even given a main-tenance guarantee for Release 4.6C untilJune 2004.However, the priorities have changed.Companies can no longer afford to put offInternet projects. In many sectors it is nowa must to offer an Internet sales solution.SAP customers have an excellent startingposition. Thanks to the maintenance guar-antee for older R/3 systems up until 2003,they do not automatically have to upgradeto R/3 Release 4.6 to enjoy mySAP.coms

Windows laptop so that you have it on handduring planning meetings. All congurationinformation is saved to an XML-based cong-uration le. With this conguration le, thehandover of information is well dened, which means, for example, that the installa-tion itself can be carried out by another con-sultant who does not need specialized SAPknow-how the actual process of installa-tion and conguration is automatic. The ad- vantages of the Conguration Assistant in-clude a graphical user interface, the optionof proposing default values, predened dis-tribution scenarios, and drag-and-drop sup-port.
Smart implementations cut the timeneeded to get mySAP.com components upand running by avoiding time-consumingconguration tasks and post-installation re- work. This technology will therefore be in-cluded in future generations of the SAP in-
stallation tool under the name SAPinst.
Uwe Inhoff, Marco Gleiter, SAP AG
Smart technology makes implementationfaster and more secure. It spans both theplanning process for the technical infrastruc-ture and the installation and congurationof all components. Mutual dependencies andinterfaces are taken into account as early asthe conguration and planning stage, whichensures compatibility of all the components.
As with manually installed SAP systems, those installed with smart technology donot have any limitations. You can modify allsettings after installation. The technical con-guration is part of the installation process, and adjustments are made more quickly andeasily than setting up a new system.
The path toward smartimplementation
Smart implementations can be divided intotwo phases: conguration and planning, and
installation. The rst phase uses the Cong-uration Assistant to simplify congurationplanning. You can install this tool on any

Minimal cost and risk
For Klckner & Co, fast entry into the world of e-business and rapidexploitation of the Internets potential to maximize control over the value chain appeared to be challenging. However, the mySAP E-Com-merce Starter Pack proved to be the ideal launch pad. Within days,Klckner & Co implemented a prototype system, providing the data for informed decision making and laying the foundations for extend-
ing and customizing the respective solutions throughout the group. The mySAP E-Commerce Starter Packs precongured applicationsallowed Klckner & Co to take advantage of SAPs experience fromprevious projects conducted with other e-commerce enterprises toenable rapid deployment of a complete solution. This made it pos-sible for Klckner & Co to enter the e-business age at minimal riskand cost, without restricting the potential for customizing and ren-ing the system.
Wolfgang Scheid, CEO of Klckner Information Systems, is de-lighted with the project. Because these systems integrate seamless-ly with the back office, they will streamline our buying and sellingprocesses considerably, he says. The huge amounts of paperwork
and countless phone calls the old economy demanded of our suppli-
ers, our customers, and ourselves will be radically reduced. Moreover, we can provide a better service to our customers in the form of moreconvenient ordering 24 hours a day from any browser and constantaccess to the very latest product data.
In addition to SAP Online Store and mySAP E-Procurement,Klckner & Co plans to add additional Web-based functions tostreamline processes within the organization even more. mySAP Workplace, the third element of the mySAP E-Commerce StarterPack, is a browser-based enterprise portal that allows personalized,user-based access to applications, information, and services. By im-plementing all three elements of the mySAP E-Commerce StarterPack, Klckner & Co is well on the way to success in the world of
e-business.
