Aluminium is replacing wood as part ofa clear trend in the Spanish furnitureindustry. Intra and Andreu World are twofurniture makers who are leading theway. The key adantages are finish, er-satility and low enironmental impact.
India has one of the fastest growingeconomies in the world. HemanthPrasad at Sapa Thermal Managementsays that Sapa has a unique appeal tothe Indian market. We hae the exper-
tise and the technology to go from ideato finished product under one roof.
Sapa in Trzcianka is the first plant inthe industry to use electromagneticpulse technology, which enables steeland aluminium profiles to be joined in acompletely new way.
When a facelift was needed at theSloak Uniersity of Technology thechosen supplier was Sapa BuildingSystems. The technical solution, price
and ability to delier were decidingfactors.
Rugby and football hae been played atLansdowne Road in Dublin since 1872.
This year the totally redeeloped AiaStadium was opened. Sapa Profiles inBelgium supplied the aluminium profilesfor the exterior.
Shaping the future
In the past few years, Sapas overall strategy has been tomove towards solutions. We are increasingly providingour customers with added value in terms of innovation,
design, fabrication, support and service. Throughout theglobal market downturn in 2008/2009 we strengthenedour R&D and sales resources to ensure that our focus onsolutions remained strong. Now that the markets are show-ing an upturn, we are glad to see that this investment ispaying off.
Sapa is gaining market shares in Europe and NorthAmerica, and the fact that more and more customers
choose Sapa reassures us that we have chosen the rightpath. Our efforts to serve our customers with innovativesolutions were recognised in May when Sapa Heat Transferreceived an award from the Japanese Denso Corporationfor our contribution to Densos global business develop-ment and cooperation across multiple regions.
To be able to serve our global and international custom-ers even more effectively, Sapa is looking to expand its geo-graphical footprint. In 2009 we acquired Indalex, which isnow fully integrated into Sapa Profiles North America. Withthis acquisition, Sapa has become the leading extrusioncompany in the region.
The next step in our expansion strategy is to grow inAsia and the Middle East. In September, we finalised the
acquisition of a majority of the shares in the Vietnameseextrusion company Vijalco. Another important step is theMemorandum of Understanding to form a joint venture withChinalco, the largest aluminium company in China, to setup production to serve the rapidly growing rolling stockmarket in China. We are also establishing a fabrication unitin India, an exciting market where Sapa Building Systems
has established a strong sales organisation. Expansion ofour established operations in China is underway,
and in September we held the formalinauguration of the new hot and cold
rolling plant at Sapa Heat TransferShanghai.
These new landmarks are only
the beginning of Sapas expansionand our journey towards solutionscontinues!

BRIEF NOTICES
Listening to customers and recognising early signs of change in demand can often lead
to success. SweTherm, a Swedish manufacturer of district heating substations, is a
good example.
The companys sliding door enclosures for district heating substations, which use alumin-
ium in an innovative design that is both practical and stylish, are winning the hearts of home-
owners. Sapa has assisted with the product development process right from the start.
When homeowners invest good money in attractive, high-tech equipment for their utility
rooms they dont want to spoil the impression with a heating system that looks as if it stepped
out of the fifties, says Hans Strng, CEO of SweTherm, who also came up with the idea for
the new product. SweTherms new sliding door cabinet has consigned sheet metal doors
and panels to history and can even be used for district heating substations supplied by their
competitors.

Did you know that roughly eight percent ofthe Earths crust is made up of aluminiumin the form of various minerals?
An ingenious
sp oSteffen W. Loth, the founder of Empreson, a German manufactu-
rer in the field of textile architecture, will not let a good idea fade
away. His newest product, the vertical banner display Vertikise, wasborn one sunny but windy day. His girlfriend jokingly asked him to
design a mobile wind shield. This was the birth of the patent pending
Vertikise, a modular construction with aluminium feet and up to 11
square metres roll-up textile display that can be used as:
Ean all round, scalable display system
Ea queuing stand with a great advertising surface
Ea view and wind shield solution for the restaurant and event branches
Eand, above all, a completely new urban advertising tool.
Empreson set the highest demands of quality, functionality and
design for this new product. And aluminium was a given choice not only
for its low weight and resistance to corrosion, but also for the excel-
lent surface finish and the flexibility in design. Sapa contributed with its
expertise throughout the product development process.

You must have seen them, the two Olympic flags waving high at the BC
Place Stadium in Vancouver during the opening ceremony of the last
Winter Games. The five-ringed flag fluttered proud and joyfully even in the
total absence of wind.
The 15-metre-long poles were provided by Sapa and they were fittedwith several exhaust holes at the top and were mounted on a fan to keep
the Olympic flag fluttering gracefully. The two Olympic poles were speci-
ally manufactured at the plant of Sapa Pole Products in the Netherlands
for Harrison Flagpoles in the UK.

With 22 out of its 36 kilometres running through tunnels, the Supersur (Super South) motorway will
dramatically improve the traffic situation around Bilbao and speed up the transport of goods around
that busy harbour in the north of Spain. All in all, the motorway project comprises 14 tunnels one of them
more than 4.5 kilometres long and Socelec SA will illuminate all of them.
Socelec, a part of the Schreder Group, is not new in the business. The Great M30, in Madrid, and the
Channel Tunnel are two of the many projects that benefit from the companys engineering and products.
Sapa has supplied over 40 tons of machined extruded aluminium profiles used by Socelec in manu-
facturing the 8,592 luminaires that will be placed along the tunnels of the Supersur.

BRIEF NOTICES
Travelling on a highway
you better wish all the ligh-
ting poles along your way were
100NE3 certified. Why? Becaus
if there is an accident and your
car hits a column, it is the end of
the columns life and not yours.
100NE3 is the highest standardfor passively safe columns and E
stands for Non-Energy absorbin
the car doesnt crash against the
column but simply knocks it down
avoiding serious injuries to driver
and passengers. The column will
shear off no matter the direction
the impact.
A recent accident in Almere, th
Netherlands, is a good example
of it. A car violently hit a Sapa
100NE3 lighting column after
leaving the slippery highway afte
roadworks. The driver, instead ofvisiting the nearest hospital, was
able to continue his journey, in his
own car.

iteet street lightingLamp-posts line the lightly trafficked road. They give off very l ittle light
despite the fact it is late at night. But apparently without cause they
gradually pour out more light until i t is no longer dark. After a few
seconds a cyclist pedals past and shortly the lights dim again along
the empty road.
A scene from the future? Not at all. Smart, energy-efficient systems
of this type are currently being installed all around Sweden.
We dont sell light sources; we sell intel ligent lighting systems, says Pelle Bckrud, CEO of Prisma Light, which recently launched the
new Elliot street light that uses LED technology.
LEDs have a burn time of around 50,000 hours, which corresponds
on average to a working life of over 12 years in Swedish conditions,
ten years longer than todays lamps. One requirement, however, is that
the working temperature of the light fitting does not exceed a certain
level. Sapa helped Prisma Light to develop the extruded aluminium
heat sink that carries excess heat away and ensures the ideal working
conditions.
The Elliot street light from PrismaLight uses LED technology.
Peeess
turnaround timeOn this occasion we needed
a machining capability our
regular aluminium profile supplier
couldnt provide, recalls Xiaoping
Wu, engineering manager at
Peerless Lighting, a part of Acuity
Brands Inc., an American leader in
architectural lightning. Sapa had
that capability in its Delhi plant and
that is why we are working together
for the first time.
But it was not only a problem
of engineering but also of time. Acustomer of Peerless was in a rush
to get Peerless new lighting fixture
certified for the new Chandler City
Hall in Arizona. I dont remember
if we had two or three weeks but
whatever Sapa promised us, they
did. We had the first sample fixture
built upon the arrival of the housing
extrusion. We delivered it on time
and won the contract, says Wu.
Sapa is now ready to manu-
facture the component. Peerless
Lighting is known for its leading-
edge design and an extraordinaryquality of illumination. Sapa is a very
renowned company too. Together
we can create great products.

JOINING

After joining:
EElectromagnetic pulse technology enables
different metals to be welded and shaped.
EBy exposing parts such as aluminium profiles
to short but very intense electric currents
generated by electromagnetic coils, the
diameter of profiles can be expanded or
reduced.
EMetals with a high electrical conductivity such
as aluminium, copper and steel are especially
suited for electromagnetic pulse technology.

Green and ood ooSapa Application Centre in Italy went beyond European standards
when developing a new noise barrier for roads and public works.
The Eco Noise Barrier not only complies with mandatory acoustic and
mechanical requirements but also adds a unique dimension of design and
environmental friendliness to the product.
These ecobarriers have a photo-catalytic coating with anti-air pollution
properties, absorbing and neutralising noxious emissions from bypassing
traffic. Since the barriers are printable, they are also available in a wide variety
of landscaping choices that make it possible for city architects and highway
operators to interact with the surroundings.
The Eco Noise Barrier was developed in cooperation with Sapas
Innovation Centre in Sweden, and Celenit, an Italian supplier of bio-
compatible acoustic panels.

Poducto assueddespite fireWhen a fire destroyed the Sapa
Heat Transfer cold rolling mill in
Finspng, Sweden, it was essentialto replace capacity quickly in order
to maintain supplies to customers.
Naturally there are disruptions
when something unexpected
like this occurs. But weve done
everything we can to ensure
that our customers get what
they want, says Anna Stenlund,
Communications Manager at Sapa
Heat Transfer.
To cover production needs over a period of almost three months
while the rolling mill in Finspng was being rebuilt, the company
sought help from other producers around Europe.
We should be thankful that no one was injured in the fire, despite the destruction, and that we were able to fulfil the most
critical deliveries to our customers, says Anna Stenlund.

The Norwegian manufacturer Sea & Industry
Aluminium AS is a provider of solutions forthe shipping, construction and fish farming indu-
stries. They are now launching the third generation
of their popular aluminium module for silos, up to
seven metres high, where fish farms keep their
stock of fish food.
These new modules are thanks to specially
designed aluminium profiles easier to manu-
facture and therefore cheaper.
Until recently, we were doing a lot of wel-
ding at our plant and on site, and that is a hard,
time-demanding and expensive job. Now we
have adopted a profile design that we can
simply snap together which also offers bet-
ter thermal insulation, says Jostein kland,Project manager at SI Aluminium. Cutting a
long story short he says: We had the idea and
went to Sapa. They made the necessary adjust-
ments to make a product out of it.
