1.1. Upgrade

1.1.1. How do I upgrade from SAP TM 6.0 to SAP TM 7.0 (168) ID: 168

Release: Phase 1

Status : Answered

Description:

The upgrade process from SAP TM 6.0 to SAP TM 7.0 is described in note 1180890.

1.1.2. Can I upgrade from SCM APO TP/VS to SCM TM? (7) ID: 7

Release: Undefined

Status : Answered

Description:

No. There is not upgrade / technical migration available from TP/VS to SAP TM. The customer has to run a

customer specific project to perform this update.

SAP TM is designed to drive, manage and operate transportation across multiple enterprises, companies and

warehouse management systems, including process steps that are executed by retailers, manufacturers, and

Logistics Service Providers.

As the used technology and architecture is completely different a solution upgrade from SAP ERP LES-

TRA or from SAP SCM APO TPVS to SAP TM are not supported.

1.2. General

1.2.1. For which hardware platform is SAP TM available (129) ID: 129

Release: Undefined

SAP TM Requirements d034797 SAP AG

1 SAP Internal

Page 8: SAP_TM_FAQ

Status : Undefined

Description:

SAP TM is available on the same hardware platforms then SAP Netweaver.

The SAP TM optimizer is only available on Window and Linux. Depending on the provider of the geocoder

you may also have restrictions. Currenlty the geocoder from PTV runs on Windows.

To see the available components:

1.2.2. What deployment / installation options are currently available for SAP TM? (8) ID: 8

Release: Undefined

Status : Answered

Description:

SAP TM is based on Netweaver 2004S. With SAP TM you can also install SAP EM, Analytics, Portal on

the same server. The XI release used is the XI 7.0 release included in Netweaver 2004S.

The deployment scenario is SAP TM (and the listed other services) is "standalone".

This means that SAP TM cannot run on the same system as SAP ERP or an existing SAP SCM system.

The only exception is that SAP TM can run together with SAP EM 5.1 on one instance.

SAP in general allow to install several instances (systems) on the same server. Hence the customer may

decide to install SAP TM together with another instance of software on the same server. This will still not

share any SAP technology and will only use the same hardware. From the SAP TM perspective this

installation is similar to an installation on different servers.

organization and the group that is doing the sales/purchasing of the order. This association of the order to a

group is necessary to allocate the costs/profits of the order to a business unit. It is also necessary for profit

analysis of various groups/organizations of the LSP. It helps analyze the costs that the company is incurring

for various TSPs, routes, customers etc. The analysis will also lead to better demand forecasting.

In some cases, the sales or the purchasing group may need to be pre defined. For e.g.: a transport from

Hamburg to Munich is always sold by sales office Hamburg. In this case the responsible sales office should

be determined automatically by the ship-from and ship-to location.

Page 13: SAP_TM_FAQ

In order to provide such a generic framework to define conditions for determining organizational units,

condition technique together with the formula derivation tool (FDT) is used. On the basis of the standard

condition the customer can define in the FDT application his decision table

SAP TM has one pre-defined condition to determine the organisational units (see below).. Please use this

condition if you want to define the assignment of organisational units to the shipment request / shipment

order based on input values from the shipment request / shipment order.

Note: In order to define rules for finding organizational units you need to us the predefined condition:

/SCMTMS/SRQ_ORGUNITS - Organizational units for Shipment Request

/SCMTMS/FRQ_ORGUNITS - Organizational units for Freight Request

/SCMTMS/SOR_ORGUNITS - Organizational units for Shipment Order

/SCMTMS/FOR_ORGUNITS - Organizational units for Freight Order

/SCMTMS/BOR_ORGUNITS - Organizational units for Booking Order

/SCMTMS/HSH_ORGUNITS - Organization units for Shipment

Creating an own condition does not lead to a rules based finding of organizational units

Description:

The shipment is an object which represents the execution specific aspects of a set of freigt units. A shipment

consignment specific activities like customs declaration.

SAP TM Requirements d034797 SAP AG

10 SAP Internal

Page 17: SAP_TM_FAQ

The shipment is often the basis for printing or electronic transmission of consignment specific bills of lading

(CMR waybill, house airway bill, ocean waybill, etc.). This is especially the case, when the declarative

character of the consignment does not correspond to the logistic character, i.e. when multiple freight units

are reconsolidated for customs declaration purposes.

In SAP TM, tracking and tracing of the execution is initiated on shipment basis.

The shipment can be communicated via the WaybillNotification_Out message. Currently the shipment has

not an inbound interface. The shipment is based on EDIFACT standard IFTMCS.

The IFTMCS is defined in http://www.unece.org/trade/untdid/d06b/trmd/iftmcs_c.htm as:

A message from the party providing the transport/forwarding services to the party that issued the

instructions for those services stating the actual details, terms and conditions (charges when applicable) of

the service and of the consignment involved. In addition it can be used for the exchange of contract

information between carriers mutually.

Status : Answered

Description:

SAP TM Requirements d034797 SAP AG

11 SAP Internal

Page 18: SAP_TM_FAQ

Adaptive Planning in SAP TM 6.0 and SAP TM 7.0 allows the following:

Within a tour you can have executed and planned activities. Executed activities cannot be changed. For the

non-executed part of the tour (which begins after the (expected) end time of the last executed activity) the

following actions are possible:

1. Add new Stops and Freight Units to the tour (loading of the new freight units must take place in non-

executed part)

2. New Hubs can be used (for delivery of a freight unit to its destination).

3. Remove Stops and Freight Units from the tour (if loading takes place in non-executed part).

4. Planning times and durations can be changed in the non-ETA part)

5. As a result of actions 1.-4., existing PTA can be deleted(unless it is an unloading activity and the

corresponding loading activity is in the executed part), new PTAs can be created (empty run also possible).

6. Trailer, TU Resources, etc. can also be changed in the non-executed part.

Note that the transportation plan resulting from above changes of PTAs must be consistent:

- respect FU constraints, i.e. loading implies unloading

- respect FU constraints source and destination (within planning), i.e. it must be picked up at source and

delivered to destination

- the same time constraints are used as in regular planning

All these steps are also possible for several tours. If new stops and hubs are included in a tour then the

involved freight unit constraints must be completely delivered (to their final constraint destination).

The changes in SAP TM can be performed via the following system functionality:

1. Rescheduling button in planning: Based on the last ETA it will adjust the start/end times of the planned

activities accordingly, if feasible schedule can be determined. Limited to one resource.

2. Planning (manual / optimizer): Will add / remove freight units / stops / new hubs / change / delete / add

planned activities

related Shipment Order has a status of Unreleased.

It is possible that a Tour is connected to more than one Shipment Order. The Shipment Orders would be

linked to only a part of the Tour in this case. So, starting the execution of the Tour would not mean that all

the Shipment Orders would also have to be released. It is possible that ETAs of the Tour with which the

Tour starts belong just to one of the other Shipment Orders of the Tour.

Beside this, the Tour shows just the logistical part of TM. It needs not to be linked to Shipment or Freight

Orders from execution status point of view.

2.2.4. Tour (153) ID: 153

and deliver realtime event notifications to the underlying business processes.

2.2.9. Dynamic Route determination / Routing Guide (37) ID: 37

Release: Undefined

Status : Undefined

Description:

Routing decisions have major impacts on service and costs.

The routing guide within the SAP TM application generates feasible transportation plans at the time of order

entry, e.g. shipment request, by determining routes, which freight units to include, the planning horizon, and

which modes, means-of-transport and which equipment to use.

You can view all possible routes based on carriers, capacities, real transportation charges, and lead times,

and then manually choose an option or use predefine strategies to allow automatic selection of the options

that best fit your needs.

The result of the routing guide can be set as constraints for the shipment request, e.g. if the user decides that

a certain hub should be used then this can be saved as a constraint for planning.

You have the option to analyse in detail only the main leg while considering infinite capacity for the other

legs.

SAP TM uses an optimization technique to help you select

carriers that offer the lowest-cost solution for all shipments. This

technique also considers constraints such as equipment availability

moves. Constraints limit carriers’ minimum and maximum

number of shipments to specific time periods, geographic locations,

customers, and other factors.

2.2.12. Shipment Order / Freight Order (40) ID: 40

Release: Undefined

Status : Undefined

Description:

SAP TM allow to create manually or automatically a shipment order which represents a purchase order for

transportation services from a transportation service provider that acts as a subcontractor (Shipping

Instruction).

A shipment order can have a list of possible carriers assigned or have the finally selected carrier assigned.

The carrier the list of carriers can be assigned manually or automatically via a planning engine. If tendering

is required then the carrier in the shipment order / freight order is only assigned after the end of the

tendering process.

A Shipment order represents a single consignment and is based on EDIFACT IFTMIN.

A freight order represents a pre-consolidated load from one or more pick-up locations to one or more

destinations and is based on EDIFACT IFCSUM.

A shipment order and a freight order are always unimodal. After all resources are unloaded a new freight

order starts.

2.2.13. Tendering (42) ID: 42

Release: Undefined

Status : Undefined

Description:

A tendering process starts if the user or the system determines more than one possible TSP. This tendering

process can use a mixture of different modes of tendering (peer-to-peer, broadcast or open tendering). To

start the tendering process outgoing transportation orders are created (Shipment order or freight order). The

tendering process results in one TSP being selected for carrying out the transportation activity.

SAP supports different modes of tendering.

Peer-to-peer tendering:

*Sequential tendering to preselected transportation service providers (TSP).

Broadcast tendering:

*Simultaneous tendering to preselected transportation service providers (TSP).

Open tendering:

*Simultaneous tendering to all transportation service providers (TSP) taken from the TSP repository.

These different modes of tendering can be mixed, e.g. you could start with peer-to-peer tendering and after a

defined time-period the system re-tendering. If all peer-to-peer carriers have been asked the system could

swich to broadcast tendering.

This behaviour is controllable via system settings.

Within tendering process a request for quotation is send to the external carrier. The carrier can then make a

quotation to the SAP TM system. The SAP TM system has then a decision support to select the best carrier.

Best can for example be based on costs and / or based on pasted performance.

Description:

The SAP TM system allows the definition of TSP capacity as allocation. A allocation defines for a number

of time periods the minimum and maximum number or shipments a TSP can perform.

Which an allocation you can define:

1.) Maximum number of shipments a TSP can perform for a giving time period

2.) Minimum number of shipments a TSP should perform for a giving time period

The allocation can be viewed as logistical information about the TSP ability to perform transportation

services and can also be used to setup business rules, e.g. TSP A should only receive 10 orders per month.

In contrast the freight agreement contain the contractual / legal agreement with the TSP.

2.2.27. Container - Master data and handling within the manual dispatching (58) ID: 58

Release: Undefined

Status : Undefined

Description:

The planner can manual configure a container.

A container provides the information what goods can be loaded and the capacity (dimension / units of

measurement )of what can be loaded.

The transported goods require these capacity and the system will check if any capacity restriction is violated.

After the container configuration the planner can manually / automatically plan the remaining transport.

Containers have the following attributes: metrics, e.g. volume, max loading capa, customer specific

attributes (leased, own)

For the carrier the selected container is important information which must be communicated to the carrier.

This would also include the weight of the selected container.

The system should allow the following for the definition of capacity requirements of the container:

- "Additive" = capacity requirement of Container + Sum of capacity requirements of freight units

SAP TM Requirements d034797 SAP AG

22 SAP Internal

Page 29: SAP_TM_FAQ

- "Maximum" = Maximum (capacity requirement of Container , Sum of capacity requirements of freight

units)

- "Direct" = capacity requirement of Container

A mixture of the same unit is also possible, e.g. additive and maximum.

For example this allow the system to model the following scenarios:

1.) Weight of the container is added to the weight of the transported goods

2.) Volumen of the container can be added to the volume of the transported goods

3.) The maximum of the volume of the container and the volume of the aggregated volume of the goods that

will be transported will be taken. This volume settings will be based on a setting on the container (closed

container).

4.) The container is using a certain minimum capacity ("eigenvolumen") plus the maximum of the container

loading volume and the sum of the volume of the freight units.

This can be maintained on the phy. properities of the container master data.

2.4.1. TCM Functionality Overview (91) ID: 91

Release: Undefined

Status : Undefined

Description:

Efficient freight rating and the settlement with customers and subcontractors is one of the most important

parts in an end-to-end logistics process and integrates logfistics data with financial data.

Transportation Charge Management consisted of 5 elements

1.) Transportation Charge Calculation (Freight Rating and Costing): The determination of relevant freight

rates, assessorial charges, other surcharges and discounts for the selling (debit) as well as the buying (credit)

side for all modes of transport such as trucking (land transport), rail, sea, air and inland vessel cargo (barge).

2.) Customer Freight Invoicing (Customer Billing): Charging the customers (e. g. shippers, consignees) for

the transportation and other services

3.) Supplier Freight Invoicing (Subcontractor Settlement): Freight auditing & payment of costs for a

transportation service to the subcontractor (carrier or other 3rd parties)

4.) Inter- and intra-company Billing: Invoicing affiliates and allocating cost centers to be charged with

freight costs deriving from a transport or other services

3.1.7. What is included in the Processing Transportation Requests in SAP TM? (113) ID: 113

Release: Undefined

Status : Undefined

Description:

Overview:

Within SAP Transportation Management (TM) transportation requests can be received, updated and

confirmed.

Purpose:

This business process is carried out to capture and evaluate transportation requests. These transportation

requests are the basis for the transportation planning and execution. Transportation proposals can to evaluate

possible paths through the network and transportation charge calculation can pre-evaluate the transportation

charges for the customer.

Detailed Description:

The logistics process in SAP TM starts with an incoming transportation request.

A transportation request represents a customer order to move goods from one location to another. SAP TM

supports two different types of transportation requests, the shipment request (close to the IFTMIN standard)

and the freight request (close to the IFCSUM standard).

The shipment request represents a customer order to ship goods from a source to a destination location while

the freight request represents a customer order to ship goods from multiple sources to multiple destination

SAP TM Requirements d034797 SAP AG

42 SAP Internal

Page 49: SAP_TM_FAQ

locations.

The transportation request contains the business data send by the customer including information how the

customer expects the handling of this transportation request.

Transportation requests can be received via open interfaces, such as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) or

Web Services, as well as other common means of communication, such as email, fax or phone. The requests

can then be maintained in the system.

In addition to the integration from above SAP TM can be closely coupled to an existing SAP ERP system.

SAP ERP a standard mapping for ERP deliveries to shipment request in SAP TM is available.

Once the transportation requested have been captured the user may create transportation proposals to

evaluate possible paths through the transportation network and to pre-select certain paths though the

network which will be later constraints for the planning.

In the transportation management system the transportation network (geography) defines the possible

transportation ways. For example if a transport can be performed directly from the sending to the receiving

location or if this transport request must be transported via a transhipment point (hub) is defined by the

transportation network.

During the determination of transportation proposals the user can define additional constraints for the

transportation request, for example, based on the result of the transportation proposal the user may decide

that the order must be delivered via the harbour in New York.

The user can also run a transportation charge calculation (freight cost calculation). This can either be used

for evaluating the costs or for confirming the final transportation charges for the customer (freight billing).

The processing of transportation requests pertains to their screening (validated), adjustment (error corrected,

additional information is placed in the document) and confirmation. This last step is an optional step, which

can also be carried out at a later stage.

Credit checks can be performed for a transportation request within SAP TM.

After evaluation of the transportation request the user can send the customer a confirmation of his request.

This is also possible during a later stage of the process.

3.1.8. What is included in Planning and Executing Transportation Requests in SAP TM

(114) ID: 114

Release: Undefined

SAP TM Requirements d034797 SAP AG

43 SAP Internal

Page 50: SAP_TM_FAQ

Status : Undefined

Description:

Overview:

Based on the transportation requests maintained in SAP Transportation Management (TM) optimal

shipments are created. SAP TM offers multiple tools to create and manage the planning processes like best

in class optimization, dynamic routing and scheduling and continuous move optimization For creating the

shipments, the system uses the transportation charges and freight agreements., considering resource,

equipment and carrier availability at the same time. This process is known as Planning and Executing

Transportation Requests in TM.

This business process is carried out to create and execute the business objects that are required for driving

the transportation execution process, thus enabling margin maximisation.

Details:

Basis for the planning are the freight units (logistic planning units). The system reads the incoming

transportation requests and transfers them by means of the freight unit builder into freight units.

Freight units are non-separable units, which are transported together over the whole transportation chain.

The freight unit builder takes into account the maximum order size and available vehicle capacity.

After the freight units have been created, the transportation activities can either be created manually by the

user or automatically by the system. The system uses sophisticated planning algorithms (optimization)

depending on the business scenario. The planning activities can optionally be grouped into individual tours.

The freight units and transportation activities are grouped to loads and assigned to resources (such as trucks

or railcars).

The availability of drivers can be manually checked and drivers can be assigned to the resources. The

system automatically checks the qualification of the drivers required by the different resources.

If external transportation service providers (TSPs) are used, that is if a certain stage of the transportation is

subcontracted to an external TSP, they can be determined either manually or automatically by using the

transportation charges maintained in the system.

A tendering process starts if the user or the system determines more than one possible TSP. This tendering

process can use a mixture of different modes of tendering (peer-to-peer, broadcast or open tendering). In the

system, a timeout can be defined, so that the system will re-tender the transportation activity to another TSP

SAP TM Requirements d034797 SAP AG

44 SAP Internal

Page 51: SAP_TM_FAQ

or so that the system can switch from one mode to the next mode of tendering. The tendering process results

in one TSP being selected for carrying out the transportation activity.

Once the TSP has been selected, outgoing transportation orders are created. The Freight Order (IFCSUM)

and the Shipment Order (IFTMIN) are freight purchase orders to procure transportation services.

Orders for the same TSP are consolidated to get a better rate with the TSP and to get a continuous move

discount.

The purchase orders determine the business view of the supplier and the information structures in which the

supplier sends the invoice. This transportation order will be communicated to the carrier via EDI or via Fax/

Email.

After finishing the planning activities the transportation execution process starts.

During the transportation execution process in SAP Transportation Management:

•the transportation document is printed

•the status of executed activities is tracked

•shipments that are in execution are adjusted

•the confirmation of the completed execution is received

The integration with other systems, such as a customs management system or a warehouse management

system, can occur during the execution process.

Re-planning occurs several times, hence the cycle of planning and execution needs to be repeated.

3.1.9. What is included in Managing Supplier Transportation Charges in SAP TM

(115) ID: 115

Release: Undefined

Status : Undefined

Description:

Overview:

The transportation charges are calculated in SAP Transportation Management (TM) for the involved

business partners on the supplying side. This calculation is based on the outgoing transportation orders. The

involved business partners are supplying parties, such as the transportation service providers and / or

carriers. This process is known as Managing Supplier Transportation Charges in SAP TM

SAP TM Requirements d034797 SAP AG

45 SAP Internal

Page 52: SAP_TM_FAQ

This business process is carried out to evaluate, calculate, and distribute the transportation charges for the

supplying side. This enables the financial transactions for supplier invoicing.

Details:

The transportation charge calculation for the supplier is based on the outgoing transportation orders and it

allows a clear visibility of the costs for the outgoing transportation order level.

During the calculation the cost for the involved business partners is calculated using a central transportation

charge engine.

The user or the system starts the calculation of the supplier freight invoice request.based on one or several

shipment orders or freight orders.

The freight agreement defines if a valid business relationship exists. The freight agreement is the master data

element, which represents the information about the contract between the company the user is working for

and the supplier.

If a valid business relationship exists, the applicable rating table within the freight master data is determined

using logistics input parameters, such as the weight, the distance, or the mode of transport.

The calculation of the transportation charges are influenced by the transportation activities, the freight units,

the shipments orders, and the freight orders as well as certain master data elements.

The data collected from these elements is necessary to correctly calculate and settle the transportation

charges. The collection of the data is performed with the Transportation Charge Processing Request.

With this information the Transportation Charge Processing Request can call the Freight Calculation

Engine, which determines the final transportation charges by applying the agreed rules of calculation (for

example, break-weight calculation, bulkiness, or exclusions).

The result of the transportation charge calculation is saved in the Supplier Freight Invoicing Request.

The Supplier Freight Invoice Request represents the business view of the supplier. The structure and content

of this object refer to the transportation order (freight/shipment order) as well as to the freight agreement

between the company and the transportation service provider (credit side).

The Supplier Freight Invoice Request supports the integration with any ERP system by providing data in an

XI message. Accruals expecting invoices from the suppliers are posted. In the ERP system the invoice

creation and the invoice verification or the supplier self-billing takes place.

For the supplier self-billing (Evaluated Receipts Settlement - ERS) can be used or the SAP TM user

performs an invoice verification after he receives the final invoice from the supplier.

3.1.10. What is included in Managing Customer Transportation Charges in SAP TM?

(116) ID: 116

Release: Undefined

Status : Undefined

Description:

Overview:

The transportation charges are calculated in SAP Transportation Management (TM) for the involved

business partners on the ordering side. This calculation is based on the incoming transportation requests. The

involved business partners include the ordering party, the consignee, and the shipper. This process is known

as Managing Customer Transportation Charges in SAP TM.

Evaluate, calculate and distribute the transportation charges for the ordering party. Enable the financial

transactions for customer billing.

Details:

The transportation charge calculation for the customer is based on the incoming transportation requests, and

allows clear visibility of the margin at the incoming transportation request level.

During the freight calculation, the cost for the involved business partners is consistently calculated using one

central transportation charge engine. The calculated freight costs are integrated into the ERP system where

the customer billing document (customer invoice) is created. ,

The shipment and freight request, the activities, freight units and the shipments are the data structures that

influence the calculation of the freight costs as well as certain master data elements.

The transportation charge calculation for customer follows the same process when then transportation

charge calculation for suppliers. The result for the transportation charge calculation for customer will result

in a Customer Freight Invoice Request.

The subject area Customer Freight Invoice Processing supports integration with any ERP system by

providing data in an XI message. For instance, the SAP ERP SD integration layer for FCM uses the

transferred data to account and bill the freight service with complete integration with FI/CO.

The freight units are the basis for planning. The system (optimizer) or the user creates a transportation plan.

The transportation plan is created based on the selected FU's, vehicles / capacity reserverations and the

relevant geography. The result of the planning are activities (load, transport, unload) and tours. Tours are a

logical grouping of activities based on a rule set.

If the shipper uses external carriers / TSP's he can manual or system supported create the shipment orders /

freight orders. These orders are the order to an external party to perform a certain part of the transportation

activities. If the carrier is not yet determined for the shipment order / freight order a tendering process can be

started which will result in an update of the shipment order / freight order with the associated carrier.

The shipper create a shipment which is used to create the print documents and for the track and tracing via

Event Management. This can be done before the shipment order / freight order creation or after.

Based on the shipment / freight requests and the execution information the transportation charges for the

customer are calculated. This is only performed if the shipper will bill the service of transportation to

someone, e.g. another internal organization.

Based on the shipment / freight orders and the execution information the transportation charges for the

carrier / TSP's are calculated.

The transportation charge information is integrated back to SAP ERP and and can be used for for the invoice

verification / ERS in SAP ERP.

Use Cases:

Use Case (1)

Shipper has its own fleet. He does not create shipment orders / freight orders.

Use Case (2)

Shipper has no own equipment. He performs the planning based on capacitiy reservations (booking order)

and based on external resources. After planning he creates shipment / freight order and selects the best

carrier via a tendering process.

Use Case (3)

The shipper uses a rule set that all shipment requests which is on the same pick-up and delivery date are

placed within one freight unit and therefore will be transported together.

Use Case (4)

The shipper uses a rule set that all shipment requests which is on the same pick-up and delivery date and

consolidated. Freight units are created for the consolidated quantities whereby a new freight units is created

after 20 tons or 20 m3 have been reached. This will ensure that the freight unit does not exceed the truck

capactiy.

3.4.1. What is the main difference between SCM APO TPVS and ERP LES and SAP

TM? (2) ID: 2

Release: Undefined

Status : Answered

Description:

In addition to the functionality of SCM TP/VS and ERP LES the SCM TM provides the following

functionality:

- One combined system for all transportation activities

- Transportation planning and execution for multiple ERP systems

- Tendering allows peer-to-peer, broadcast and open tendering

- Combined inbound and outbound transportation execution possible

- Open eSOA based archtecture

- Based on EDIFOR standards

- One-step optimization is possible (Routing proposals and TSP selection in one step)

- DRD (Routing Guide) supports the same constraints as in planning, e.g. compartments, truck and trailer

- Independently of existing Product, Location and Partner master data

- Support of master data for standard routes, container and driver

- Adaptive planning even after the execution of the transportation activities has started

- Delta planning, e.g. ability to plan new transportation demands into existing shipments

- No limitation regarding the number of hubs used in one shipment (TP/VS has a limit of 2 hubs)

SCM TP/VS does currently supports more ERP transactional data integration. With SAP TM you can plan

on ERP deliveries and ERP shipment. With SCM TP/VS you can also plan ERP purchase orders, ERP sales

orders and ERP stock transport orders. It is planned for SAP TM that these elements will be supported in the

next release which is planned for 2009. In SCM TP/VS dynamic route determination is possible from the

ERP sales order entry which is not possible in SAP TM.

Status : Undefined

Description:

ERP shipment are not necessary with the usage of SAP TM, if SAP TM is used for the planning and

execution of the transportation activities.

The customer has the option to use SAP TM only for planning and still performs the execution in SAP ERP.

In this case SAP TM can trigger via the freight order the creation of a shipment in SAP ERP.

In addition the customer can use SAP ERP for planning and execution of transportation activities and use

SAP TM only for tendering. In this case SAP ERP would create a shipment and send it for SAP TM for

tendering. Once the carrier has been selected this information is send back to SAP ERP.

4.2.2. What is xCarrier and how is it related to SAP TM? (138) ID: 138

xCarrier has been a research initiative by the SAP Business Renovation team and addresses a gap in SAP’s

product offering around small parcel shipping. The initiative centered around a pilot program involving a

small number of shippers as well as small parcel carriers with a focus on shipping execution of small parcels

leveraging the concept of eSOA for collaboration. xCarrier has not been productized yet because of a lack of

resources in SCM development as well as a lack of support from the shipper IBU’s within SAP.

Nevertheless the concept of xCarrier has been integrated into SAP TM which delivers a set of around 35

Enterprise Services for business partner collaboration in its first release of SAP TM 6.0. These services will

be packaged in an Enterprise Service Bundle called ‘Transportation Collaboration & Subcontracting’.

Additional services are being delivered within ERP via a bundle called ‘Logistics Execution – Integration of

External TMS’.

This concept in SAP TM is delivering first results as partners like ocean platforms INTTRA and GT Nexus

and Latin America partner Neoris for real-time tracking of assets like trucks are developing mapping content

for SAP’s services.

Of course a lot of functional backend functionality is still missing in ERP as well as SAP TM to enable a

next generation parcel shipping approach. The next Product Definition phases will address these issues

together with SAP’s Industry units.

SAP ERP and SAP TM can be integrated via the SAP ERP delivery and the SAP ERP shipment. This

integration is based on the SAP Process Integration component (formerly known as Exchange

Infrastructure).

SAP provides standard mapping for the SAP ERP delivery (inbound and outbound) which needs to be

applied in the SAP PI system.

It is possible to use a separate SAP PI system. It is also possible to use the SAP PI systen in SAP TM.

SAP PI is part of SAP Netweaver and therefore part of SAP TM. If a high load of messages is expected SAP

recommends to use an external SAP PI system to level the system load.

Sales Orders, Purchase Orders, Purchase Requisitions, Stock Transfer Orders and Stock are currently not

supported.
