Educating Children, Supporting Families, Instilling Hope

Reflections from the Director’s Desk

Leisa Pollander, Executive Director

Another action-packed summer at the Sara Holbrook Community Center is concluding!

Children ages 4 – 18 were engaged in a multitude of activities, ranging from a week of

science camp at Shelburne Farms, 5 weeks of New Arrivals, the Center’s summer school

for English Language Learners, hiking the trails at the Missisquoi Wildlife Refuge and at

Mt. Philo, mountain biking in Williston, a week at Circus Smircus Camp in Lyndonville,

playing in the sand and swimming at North Beach, creating and sewing original fashion

statements under the tutelage of a designer – the list goes on!

Summer is supposed to be a carefree time for children, full of fun, relaxation and rejuvenation. We were able

to provide some of that with your generous support. But staff at the Center noted a dark side to this summer

– the under-reported story of hungry children. All Center sites participated in the free summer feeding pro-

gram, coordinated by the intrepid staff of the Burlington School District’s food service division. Kids vora-

ciously consumed breakfast, lunch and snack – and many went home to houses where there was no dinner

available. Families routinely utilize the Center’s tiny food shelf, after accessing the Chittenden Emergency

Food Shelf. Hannaford’s Supermarket on North Avenue generously hosts a drop bin for the Center – yet our

shelves are frequently bare. Every person who utilizes the Center’s emergency shelf has a unique story, from

the elderly couple subsisting on social security to the homeless, mentally ill veteran, to the single mom working

as a chambermaid. Economic statistics show that Vermont fares well compared to other states in the US for

unemployment. Many of the families served by the Center are underemployed, patching together part time,

service sector jobs with no benefits, trying to keep the bills paid.

With your compassionate assistance, the Center strives to alleviate some of the economic pressure. Child care

fees are kept affordable to families through the heroic efforts of the board and staff to fundraise to offer partial

or total scholarships. Healthy snacks or full meals are integrated into every program whenever possible. Hun-

gry kids can’t learn effectively – and we want every child that comes through our doors to be a success story.

Thank you for everything you do to make this possible!

New Arrivals

52 preschool through eighth grade English Language Learners (ELLs) represent-

ing 14 nations joined the New Arrivals Program for a wonderfully fun, aca-

demic five week session this summer. Children explored many literacy and

math activities in the classroom, in addition to a week of science investigation

at Shelburne Farms. The program strives to provide students with additional

exposure to the English language during the summer months helping children

maintain and progress with the English skills they have acquired during the

school year. 93% of elementary through middle school aged children main-

tained or improved their scores on pre-post tests.

Bob & Maggie Green Youth Adventure Program

It was another successful summer for the Teens in the Summer Youth Adventure

Program. We returned to some favorite places: the Missisquoi National Wildlife

Refuge, Adam's Berry Farm, the Maple Street Pool in Essex and the Catamount

Outdoor Family Canter in Williston. There was wildlife viewed (for many stu-

dents, birds they had never seen before!), smoothies made with fresh berries,

and trails mastered on mountain bikes. However, we also explored some new

places: the New Haven river outside of Bristol, the Free Summer Concert Series

at Battery Park and the market garden at Shelburne Farms where we volun-

teered just to name a few. We had almost 30 young people participate over

the six weeks programming. We had a wonderful time and especially enjoyed

all the new friendships. We are looking forward to another fantastic school

year!

Burlington Middle School Summer Program

From June 27th to July 29th two hundred middle school aged youth from across the city spent time hiking, fishing, play-

ing basketball and soccer, designing fashions for themselves, biking and learning about the mechanics of the bike, sailing

and learning about the ecology of Lake Champlain, writing graphic novels, brushing up on their math, language arts and

polishing their English, and building a stone bread oven at the school garden, to name a few. Over the 5 weeks, youth

had 43 different programs to choose from which were all one week long, some half days and some full days. We fed

between 70-90 youth, both breakfast and lunch each day.

The program was housed at Hunt Middle School. The rooms and halls were abuzz with kids excited about the programs

they had chosen. This year we tried something new and integrated math and language arts into every program. These

are not everyone's favorites, but we thought it important that students understand that there is math and writing in eve-

rything they do. Some of the math may have been too advanced, however, we wanted them to see why it is important

to do well at math and why they should put forth the effort needed, so they can build on it for the future. The writing

took many different forms: critiquing a painting, procedural writing, descriptive writing, mini essays, journaling, or read-

ing biologists reports on endangered species and aquatic nuisances.

The programs were all free of charge to the students and this would not have been possible without the help of the Bur-

lington School Department, the Vermont Department of Education, and the Burlington Students Foundation, The Sid &

Cecilia Lance Family Foundation, Friends of Burlington Gardens, The Lintilhac Foundation, Cindy Langley and generous

donations from community members who continue to support this program each year. We are very grateful to all these

supporters. Without their generosity the youth we serve could not have had such an enriching summer.

Summer World Academy

The Summer World Academy campers were busy again this summer adventuring out and about. 60 children

enrolled in the six week long program. In addition to their usual North Beach fun in the sun, children paraded

down Church Street in the Cardboard Box Parade, performed at the Wig-Wag Festival at the Integrated Arts

Academy, sailed with the Community Sailing Center, hiked Mount Philo, explored how to make ice cream at

the Ben & Jerry’s Factory, biked on the recreation path, read with the Fletcher Free Library, made lots of arts

& crafts and much more.
