My name is Sarah Berlinsky and I am interested in the Service and Leadership Training (SALT) program for the summer of 2012 at Camp Crestridge for Girls. I feel that I am very qualified for this position and I have a great amount of experience of working with children and a great work ethic that would make me qualified for this position. I would love the opportunity for you to look further into my request.

Throughout most of my high school years I have applied myself to many jobs and responsibilities that concerned working with children. My freshman and sophomore year I have taken on multiple baby sitting jobs and have been called back to sit again because of the parents approval. My junior year also consumed few similar jobs but mainly revolved around Conway Falcons, the community Pop Warner cheer team. I, along with two other girls my age, coached about 25 sixth and seventh grade girls from August to January. SALT is mainly about leading younger girls at camp, which I know takes patience, leadership and wisdom; these are all things I have learned as I worked with children the past couple of years.

Along with my experience with Children, I am also apart of clubs and teams that you will see are mentioned on my resume, that required responsibility, dedication and being able to work hard. ln the beginning (aka freshman year), journalism was just a class that I kind of liked. Then, it grew into a lifestyle and soon enough it grew into a

passion. When it comes to school-related subjects, unlike math and science, journalism and

writing just seem to come naturally. It’s one of my only talents I can really rely on. Not only

do I love journalism because it gives me the capability to tell a story, but I respect journalism

so much because of all the behind the scenes work and effort that g into a story People

outside of yearbook, newspaper or mass media generally do not understand.

I believe I’ve contributed to Journalism just like any other staffer has. I gave my best effort

towards the assignments I was given.

Nothing helps a person succeed more than failure. I have made many rookie mistakes to

get to where I am today with the knowledge I possess. I have a tendency to pick up on my

errors and learn from them which I think has molded me into a better staffer.

The main reason I got started in journalism was, yes, because my sister had done

journalism in high school, but also because I knew that my academic strong points were

writing and computer knowledge. I was able to do very well in a class that required the two

components of academics that I enjoy.

I hope to continue to use my writing and computer skills after high school. I am most

definitedly interested in studying Journalism and Communications in college

and possbily pursing a career in the real world.

This year was very different compared to last year. The transition from being a regular staffer to an ads staffer was not an easy one. I

made a lot of mistakes trying to figure out the system but during that time I took

notes on how I could improve.

The first thing I learned as an ads staffer is that you HAVE to be organized, which is

a huge struggle for me. And not only do I have to grasp all of the big things; I have to

also remember the little things that go into organizing ads. This kind of organization

includes keeping track of pictures, contracts, quotes, body and filing them into the

right places. It also means sending proofs out to parents and remembering to check

and respond to them as well.

Along with organization, I also learned time management. For the first deadline I

was handed 16 folders and I hadn’t a clue how I would tackle all this. It took strategic

planning and managing my time wisely to finally figure out the system of getting

them in time for deadline.

Lastly I learned communication skills. These skills were required at the beginning

of the school year when I met with parents about designing their

child’s senior ad. They continued to be important as I

sent proofs and communicated back and forth until

they were satisfied with the ad.

Because I was on advertising staff this year, I had little opportunity to cover any stories or topics that occurred around

campus. When I received the baseball page I knew that I had to make this

an exceptional page since it’s one of the only written works that would

be published in the book. Although I split the page with Blake, I had full

responsibility for the story that would appear on the spread which I thought

was my most significant contribution to this year’s book. At the beginning

I was actually working on a typical story about the season and the team’s

accomplishments that would have turned out to be, quite honestly, a snooze

fest due to the story’s lack of angle or excitement. Luckily, I was given the

opportunity to write a much more riveting story when the baseball team got

their field stripped from them because a light fell. Unfortunately, this meant

that I had to start over on the story.

The main conflict I had with this story was trying to fit in how the team

did this season and not write too much about the lights. Going through the

first three editors that was the main

issue. Luckily after Sehar’s (copy editor)

help, it improved a lot. I think

it turned into my best work this

year.

light from one of the poles surrounding the field fell during

a practice. Concerned about the players’ safety, athletic director D

oug Patterson contacted Orange County Facilities

CF started a business plan and the goal, to my

understanding, was to replace the lights,” Patterson said.

It wasn’t until early M

arch the next year that an Orange

County Fire Marshall responded to Patterson and checked

the poles’ condition. The fire marshal determ

ined the poles to be too dangerous to keep on the field; a devastating blow

to the players. The team

, however, had no tim

e to dwell on

their disadvantage, resolving to still practice without the field.

Even though the boys found ways to practice on the

football and practice fields around the comm

unity, it was

hard to be productive with unequipped practice space. They

struggled to find ways to w

ork on their technique, strength and agility for their upcom

ing games, but didn’t allow

their situation hold them

back from their goals.

“I feel as if we cam

e realized that this would not stop us from

achieving our team goals and w

e just stayed focused.” The next w

eek, they faced Cypress Creek to defend their w

inning streak as well as the first seed in the district

tournament. D

espite the lack of practice they had the week

before, the boys defeated the Bears, 12-5. Shortly after, the boys com

peted in the Spring Break Slam hosted by W

range. They lost their first game to O

rangewood, 1-8,

but came back and defeated both Satellite Beach, 9-0, and

Wekiva, 5-2, for a 2-1 tournam

ent score. The team

went on to defeat W

ellington, Colonial, Berkeley Preparatory and Bartram

Trail, but the boys knew one of their

biggest tests of the season would be facing their biggest rival

in Orange County, the Tim

ber Creek Wolves.

“They have always been a big gam

e for us. [They’re] alw

ays one of the better teams in the area and a good

measuring stick for us,” coach Pete Post said.

With resilient pitching from

Of all the deadlines I’ve done this year, this was my

least favorite. I’m just not completely satisfied with how the design turned

out. I mean it wasn’t Alexis fault [Ads Editor], it was the way I tried to fit all of

Robbi-Anne’s [girl in senior ad] pictures.

At the beginning it was obviously much, much worse. There were huge,

awkward gaps as well as a bunch of unneeded white space. Evaluating all of

the ads I’ve done this year, this was the one that just stood out as unnatural

and odd-looking.

I learned from this ad that I need to first study some more design

techniques so in the future I can figure out how to improve pages that may at

first look awkward. I also learned that it’s okay to mess around with the ad,

even if it somewhat takes away from the original design.

Thankfully, the final draft didn’t look too

terrible, but there’s still that huge

amount of white space that really

bothers me. I know if I had

taken a little more

time on this ad, I

could

have

fixed it.

While Blake looked through all the pictures I took

of baseball, he told me that the pictures were good, but I was lacking first of all

a good pitching picture but also pictures that had the ball in them. The entire

season my biggest challenge and goal was to capture the baseball in the picture

(as well as shooting through a fence). I had to get the timing down just right to

snap the camera at just the right second to show that that the ball was

in play. Finally, after shooting three games, I got the technique I needed

and the pictures were turning out the way I wanted them to.

I eventually captured this picture that was originally

the dominant picture for the

page. Later it was replaced by

a more professional

picture.

There are very few pictures I’ve taken for

yearbook that actually had a

framing detail. The reason

I like this picture is because

Kaley [#5, blonde girl in the

sides. I think this helps the

I also like this picture

because it shows the

excitement that volleyball-

ers always have after they score a point. The

only thing that I wish I could change about

Boone High School is very well known for how spirited

its students are at basketball games, The enthusiasm of the student section often

reaches the point where Doug Patterson (Athletic Director/future husband) has

to confront them and calm them down.

As well as framing, something I also lack in my history of photos is capturing

school spirit. A lot of the time I am so focused on shooting the action/event at

hand that I forget about the crowd’s reaction. This picture, I think,

very accurately depicts how the student section usually reacts to

a bad call or when the opposing team is warming up on their side.

The students get worked up and yell like crazy. The

reason I like this picture is

because I believe I accurately

captured just that.

I still remember just a little more than a year ago coming to you

(Burke) after making my schedule for junior year in tears because I was torn between

doing staff the next year or not. You told me that you really believed I should and then I

told you I would do staff only if I would never be appointed to an editor position my junior

or senior year. It only took four months to contradict what I said.

At the beginning of the year, when Allie (EIC) announced that we were in need of an

extra ads staffer (who would eventually become the editor the next year), I suddenly had

this very strong desire to step up to this position. This was also due to the fact that no

one else would step up to the challenge and I felt a need to contribute to my staff. I, as

always, had no idea what I was setting myself up for.

Although I faced many challenges going to work on something I didn’t have a first

clue about, I believe that in the end I was a necessary and huge contributor to the ads

staff this year. The first specific example would obviously be all of the ads I did, but also

assisting Alexis and taking on small yet important responsibilities like labeling folders,

sorting through pictures, finishing checklists, etc. Another way I believe I was an asset

to the staff was how persistent I was with book sales. I constantly tweeted,

facebooked, pinterested, you name it, about buying books. In every classroom I

walked into I wrote on their white boards to buy a book. I even gave

speeches in my classes. I believed in our book so much.

I think I made a huge contribution

to gaining book sales this year.

I wouldn’t have believed it if someone told me I would end up on ads staff. I had no experience what so ever in ads and barely

any in business.

The reason I think this year was a challenge for me is because I went

into it blindly; no experience, no clue as to what I was doing. It was

difficult trying to figure out how ads worked and how to manage them.

This especially related to how to put them together in a timely and

productive fashion, and that the restricted time I had to produce them

was my worst enemy.

I think my biggest strengths in school, yearbook and even cheer is that

I pick up on things quickly and learn from my mistakes. Each deadline

I was able to pick up on what I did wrong the last time and find a better

way to do ads. I also took notes on how to stay organized and the first

things to do to make sure my deadline would be successful. I also think

that this year I was much more calm and didn’t freak out or break down

as much as last year. Every day I learn more ways to handle stress.

My best strategy is to take a deep breath and just keep going

and keep working because breaking

down and worrying just wastes time

and makes your situation

even worse.

My greatest weakness has always been that a). I’m a

perfectionist and b). I let anxiety get the best of me.

Because I’m perfectionist, in my mind my layout, my story, my design, my portfolio even, must be perfect. This causes me to keep changing and enhancing my work in ways that are, in the end, unnecessary and a waste of time. This causes me to spend way too much time on the wrong thing, which ends up biting me in the butt.

After I spend a bunch of time on the wrong thing, I start to become extremely stressed and worry that I won’t be able to get done what I need to get done. In the past, I’ve handled stress in probably the worst ways possible. I’d break down crying, hyperventilate, and take it out on myself physically, completely destroying myself. I’ve learned that throwing my hands up and giving up hope is not the way to deal with a stressful situation. I’ve learned to handle it by clearing my head, taking deep breaths and continuing to work instead of thinking about the work load. I try to finish my work little by little and I don’t take time for granted. If I have any spare time, I pull out my laptop or grab a computer and get a little more done. It’s a healthier and a more productive way to deal with stress.

I have also learned to deal with my tendency to be a perfectionist by finishing everything I need to finish first and then,

only if I have time, I go back and make edits. Don’t waste time on something unimportant.

just barely, somehow, someway got it in on time. It’s safe to say last year I was a

wreck and a hot mess when it came to portfolio time. I think in comparison not

only am I more calm and collected but more strict on the quality of my portfolio.

Looking through last year’s I see countless spelling errors, design errors and

thrown together layouts that just looked like a kindergartner had done it. This

year I believe my design is more professional and clean and I’ve checked for

spelling and design errors at least 10 times.

The other reason I think this year is more advanced design-wise is because I

actually put a lot of effort and thought into the theme and how each page could

be presented with a specific design. Last year I just used brushes for everything.

Compared to everyone else’s on staff, well the underclassmen, I think mine

definitely stands out because I didn’t use one brush but actual real pictures that

I took. This year’s design, in my eyes, is more mature looking than last years.

I believe this years portfolio reflects on how I’ve matured in this class. I

produce better quality work and put the correct amount of time into each

section of my portfolio instead of last year when I focused to much on the

theme instead of the rest of the material.

Throughout my time on staff, I’ve learned so much

by picking up on my mistakes which

is why I think this year’s

portfolio is much better.

Ears?” for their outstanding dedication and spirit heard about across the state. They w

ent on to win the State

Championship title.

He took one last look at the illum

inated field as he walked

out of the club house, equipment throw

n over his shoulder. W

in left behind his dream of

playing under the night lights and a winning season.

In the middle of both junior varsity and varsity’s w

inning seasons, O

range County closed the baseball field from use

because they deemed the light posts too dangerous.

“We w

ere in shock that this was happening,” Irw

in said. “I w

as thinking, first of all, we w

ouldn’t have any more hom

e gam

es. Then I started thinking about where w

e would even

practice. I was w

orried that it would really affect our season.”

Thirteen months before the field w

as condemned, a

light from one of the poles surrounding the field fell during

a practice. Concerned about the players’ safety, athletic director D

oug Patterson contacted Orange County Facilities

imm

ediately after the incident occurred.“O

CF started a business plan and the goal, to my

understanding, was to replace the lights,” Patterson said.

It wasn’t until early M

arch the next year that an Orange

County Fire Marshall responded to Patterson and checked

the poles’ condition. The fire marshal determ

ined the poles to be too dangerous to keep on the field; a devastating blow

to the players. The team

, however, had no tim

e to dwell on

their disadvantage, resolving to still practice without the field.

Even though the boys found ways to practice on the

football and practice fields around the comm

unity, it was

hard to be productive with unequipped practice space. They

struggled to find ways to w

ork on their technique, strength and agility for their upcom

ing games, but didn’t allow

their situation hold them

back from their goals.

“I feel as if we cam

e together as a team m

ore,” senior John Krauss said. “W

e realized that this would not stop us from

achieving our team goals and w

e just stayed focused.” The next w

eek, they faced Cypress Creek to defend their w

inning streak as well as the first seed in the district

tournament. D

espite the lack of practice they had the week

before, the boys defeated the Bears, 12-5. Shortly after, the boys com

peted in the Spring Break Slam hosted by W

est O

range. They lost their first game to O

rangewood, 1-8,

but came back and defeated both Satellite Beach, 9-0, and

Wekiva, 5-2, for a 2-1 tournam

ent score. The team

went on to defeat W

ellington, Colonial, Berkeley Preparatory and Bartram

Trail, but the boys knew one of their

biggest tests of the season would be facing their biggest rival

in Orange County, the Tim

ber Creek Wolves.

“They have always been a big gam

e for us. [They’re] alw

ays one of the better teams in the area and a good

measuring stick for us,” coach Pete Post said.

With resilient pitching from

junior Ian McKinney and

strong defensive and offensive plays, the boys beat the W

olves, 4-2, a highlight in their disrupted season.D

uring the boys’ victorious game streak, further

observation from the county show

ed that in order for the team

s to play on their home turf, the lights had to

be removed from

the poles. Along with the change in

scenery, game tim

es changed from 7 p.m

. to 4 p.m. This

disappointment m

arred the team’s otherw

ise successful season. It w

as especially upsetting to the team’s seniors

because they were no longer able to have a senior night that

traditionally occurred under the lights.“It’s just special. N

ot a lot of schools have lights and for Boone to be all about traditions, there is no better one than playing a night gam
