    This Wednesday, February 17, is Ash Wednesday. It is the start of Lent. Masses with the Distribution of Ashes will be at 8:30AM and 6PM. Please remember that there is a 12PM Mass at St. Mary Cathedral if that is a more convenient time for you. The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has strongly encouraged that ashes be sprinkled on the top of each recipient’s head, so to avoid making bodily contact. This is the Old Testament way of receiving ashes. However, we are not sure how well that will go over, so we will be applying ashes to each person’s forehead using a Q-Tip. We have practiced it a few times, and it seems to work very well. Stations of the Cross will be prayed every Friday of Lent, beginning on February 19 at 6PM. Unfortunately, we have had to cancel so many events this past year. If you remember, we were not able to have the Stations of the Cross for most of Lent last year. Indeed, we weren’t able to publically celebrate the Triduum or Easter last year, as well. While we will not be able to have our annual Lenten Soup Suppers, we will proceed with the Stations of the Cross. I strongly encourage you to participate in this ancient prayer of our faith, particularly if you are worried about attending Mass on Sunday. Speaking of Sunday Masses, Bishop Boyea has decided to extend the dispensation not to attend Sunday Mass until the Solemnity of the Ascension, May 16 inclusive. As the Bishop states, “I likewise express my hope that the following Sunday, May 23, 2021, on which the Church celebrates the great Solemnity of Pentecost, will see the resumption of the Sunday and Holy Day obligation, with due precautions being taken and provisions being made for the most vulnerable…. As previously provided, the faithful are reminded that while the Sunday obligation to attend Mass is dispensed, all are nevertheless obligated to keep the Lord’s day holy (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2168-2195). It is especially recommended to engage in prayer, either personally or as a family (Canon Law 1248 §2), for example, by devoutly following a broadcast of the Sunday Mass by television, internet, or radio. Parishes are encouraged to continue to use the various means of social communications to maximize accessibility to the faithful.” As we begin Lent in three days, begin to think about how you will make this season a holy time. In particular, how will you make fasting, almsgiving and prayer a greater part of your personal and family spirituality? Please remember that Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting and abstinence from meat. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. God bless you as we approach this Holy Season of Lent. Fr. John Fain

    Valentine’s Day Blessing Love one another:

    as I

    have loved you. John 13:34

  • Intercessory Prayer Requests (Lent 2021)

    All: Loving God, we praise and thank you for calling us to be your servants. You knitted each of us in our mother’s womb. You gifted each of us with faith in You, with each other and with the mission of witnessing to Your love for us. Let Jesus, Your Incarnate Word, guide us how to BE and BRING You, who are love, to each other. May Your Holy Spirit give us the will and courage to use Your gifts to joyfully accomplish Jesus’ work of love, justice and peace.

    We entrust the St. Thérèse Parish family to the care of Mary our Mother and ask St. Thérèse to in-tercede for each Parishioner:

    Let us pray that we experience the sacrament of reconciliation…

    All Respond: With renewed depth, to taste the infinite mercy of God.” (Pope Francis, Penitential Celebration Homily, 03/29/2019)

    Being marked with ashes,

    All Respond: We remember that the “dust we are is only borrowed;” it is our fasting, almsgiving, works of justice and works of love for others that live on. (Stanley Kunitz, Passing Through, 1995)

    For the 2 ½ million people worldwide lost to COVID-19;

    All Respond: May these souls rest in peace; may those who mourn them be comforted; may those who cared for their health be ever thanked.

    May we strive daily, in concrete and practical ways, to adopt a culture of social justice,

    All Respond: Which eliminates workplace inequalities and creates opportunities for all to utilize God’s gifts and earn a living wage for their family. (U. N., World Day of Social Justice, 2021)

    We pray for our children preparing to receive First Communion in May;

    All Respond: Formed and led by parents, catechists and parishioners convinced that the Eucharist is the source and summit of our spiritual lives, may our children encounter the real, loving presence of Jesus Christ!

    This year, our lives have been overturned, social gatherings virtualized and futures disrupted;

    All Respond: Keep us always mindful that the One constant in our lives, the presence of God poured out for us, is our Stability, our Listening Ear, our only Star.

    May our children return to in-person schooling, once and for all, this year;

    All Respond: Give them again the joy of learning without fear of retreating. Bring to our tutoring center more tutors to help make up lost time.

    Joseph gave Mary and her child Jesus the best chance to live in a harsh world;

    All Respond: Bring to every family the love to thrive in today’s world.

    May we follow Mary’s “yes,” giving flesh to “the Son of the Most High,” (Luke 1:32) All: With our own “yeses” to the Holy Spirit’s invitation to incarnate Christ for others now.

    All: We make these petitions confident in and through the name of Jesus, the

    power of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of St. Thérèse. Amen.

  • THE GOSPEL OF LIFE @ 25:

    READ: PART 3: THE GOSPEL OF LIFE @ 25:

    "MORE CONTRACEPTION? MORE ABORTIONS": Just over a quarter of a century ago, Pope Saint John Paul II released his encyclical, Evangelium vitae, in response to the ever-increasing attacks against human life and dignity. Each Friday, we aim to explore a different aspect the prophetic papal document. Today’s passage drawn from Section 13 of the encyclical where Pope John Paul tackles the intrinsic link between the use of artificial contraception and abortion: “Indeed, the pro-abortion culture is especially strong precisely where the Church's teaching on contraception is rejected. But despite their differences of nature and moral gravity, contraception and abortion are often closely connected, as fruits of the same tree,” Pope Saint John Paul II, Section 13, Evangelium vitae. Reflecting upon this passage today is Jenny Ingles, Director of Fertility and Life Ministries for the Diocese of Lansing. Jenny writes: “It's often times hard to accept that contraception and abortion are linked. After all, we're told that if women have access to contraception, then they won't have unplanned pregnancies and, thus, will not turn to abortion. The reality is vastly different though.” “The underlying decision to reject life but still engage in life-producing activities is present in both contraception and abortion. A couple who uses contraception has already rejected the possibility of life so when the contraceptive fails to prevent a pregnancy, it is difficult, if not impossible, for many to suddenly accept this new life. This leads many to turn to abortion.” “The other lie that is often perpetuated is that contraceptives are nearly ‘full-proof’. This is far from the truth. The average birth control pill fails to prevent pregnancy between eight and ten percent of the time. Considering how many women are using the birth control pill on a daily basis (often times in non-permanent relationships), the number of unplanned, unwanted pregnancies is astronomical.” “This link between contraception and abortion is inseparable. And in order to truly end abortion in our country, it cannot be ignored.” Pope Saint John Paul II, pray for us! "The KofC / Parish Cookbook is off to a great start but we need your Recipe Forms filled out and returned! We need your recipes, your Grandma's recipes, even the recipes you won't share with your daughter-in-law. Return the forms to the Parish office, to church (the Social Room) or mail them to Tom Kavanagh at 15312 Chetwyn, Lansing, MI 48906. We hope to have the cookbooks printed in time for Mother's Day so the recipes need to be in by March 7. Thank you!"

    Even now, says the LORD, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and

    weeping, and mourning; rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God. For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in

    kindness, and relenting in punishment. Perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing, offerings and libations for the LORD, your God.
