Saratoga Central Catholic School – St. Peter’s Academy Alumni Newsletter Volume 4 July 2016 Do you know why Saint Peter’s Academy is now Saratoga Central Catholic? I recently had the opportunity to have lunch with John “Ted” Butler, Saint Peter’s Academy, Class of 1947. He had just returned to Saratoga Springs after traveling to visit with his many children and agreed to meet with me, Maria Izzo and Principal Lombard to share the story of the 1976 “Saving of the School”. Ted explained that in 1975, one of his sons came home from school saying that Saint Peter’s Academy was going to close at the end of the school year. The Church of Saint Peter was experiencing financial difficulties and the parish council had recently voted to close the high school in order to stabilize their finances. Several devoted Saint Peter’s Academy alumni, parents and community members came together to forge a plan to keep the school open. The Diocesan School Board and the Bishop’s Office were contacted and asked to hold off on making a decision and a Steering Committee was created. Although John Roohan and Robert “Bobby” D’Andrea were extremely interested in heading this committee, they were both in politics at the time so they asked Ted to be chairman. Ted was the Comptroller for Skidmore College and agreed to act as chair of the Steering Committee. In addition to Roohan, D’Andrea and Butler, the following people served on the Steering Committee: Jim Benton, Joseph Celeste, Jim Collins, Joseph D’Andrea, Bernard Donovan, Mary Duval, Patricia Dorsey, William Hickey, Ed Lenz, Dominick Nardelli, Mark Phillips, Jack Pompay, Frank Quinn, Paul Robbens, Lee Roohan, Jerry Scarano, Harry Snyder, Richard Swantek, Joseph Tarantino, Sr. and Harry Vradenburg. The committee contacted the Diocese of Albany and set up meeting to discuss the future of the school. The school was in financial need and the Steering Committee agreed to secure funds to keep the school open. The Diocesan School Board and the Bishop agreed if they could raise $150,000 in capital, and increase it to $500,000 over the next five years, the school would stay open. Many meetings ensued with much debate around Saratoga over whether or not the school should remain open. Several meetings were held in the gymnasium with well over 500 people attending. Within two months, the capital was raised by the Steering Committee and Bishop Edwin Broderick and the Diocesan School Board decided that the Church of St. Peter would no longer be financially responsible for the high school. Instead, SPA was deemed a regional Diocesan school that would serve the Saratoga area and sustain itself financially. This is when the name was changed to “Saratoga Central Catholic High School”. Ted and his wife (Ellen Fogarty Butler) both graduated from SPA and then sent their 8 children to SPA/SCC, all of whom graduated from our school. We thank you, Ted, and all the men and women who stood up and took action to keep our school open during that critical time. Without all your efforts, my three siblings and I, (and currently my daughter) as well as countless others, would not have been able to attend Saratoga Central Catholic. The school’s 111th Commencement Exercises were celebrated last month, and we are looking forward to many more! Sincerely Grateful, Mary Guarnieri, SCC Class of 1986 Director of Advancement Saratoga Central Catholic School

Thank you to the Saratoga Springs Vietnam War 50th Anniversary

Commemorative Committee

On Friday, April 22, 2016, Saratoga Central Catholic School had the privilege to host a group of special guest speakers. Five members of The Saratoga Springs Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemorative Committee presented their slide show to the 7th and 8th graders in American History and the AP US History Class. Photographs by Robert Witowski took the SCC students on a journey through the Vietnam War. Witowski served in the Air Force as a combat photographer during the Vietnam War in 1967 and 1968, and was unknowingly exposed to a dangerous blend of chemicals known as Agent Orange.

Left to right: Ms. Izzo, David Wallingford (US Marine Corps Captain), Senator Roy McDonald (US Army Sergeant, 1st Air Cavalry), alumnus Lewis Benton, ’63 (US Army Sergeant, Medical Service Corps), alumnus David Waghorn, ’66 (US Army Sergeant, Army Security), and Jim Hartman (US Air Force Sergeant, Intelligence) shared personal experiences of the war with students as they presented the photographs. Thank you gentlemen, for your service to our nation.

Letter from Board of Trustees President,Dr. Stanley Weeks

Saratoga Central Catholic School continues to thrive in this vibrant, growing community. Enrollment is up, budgets are balanced, facilities continue to be improved and graduates continue to obtain very substantial college scholarships. The Board of Trustees works in close collaboration with Principal Lombard and has developed a strategic plan that will assist the school on reaching it’s agreed upon goals. This Board is committed to the development of the school as a unique Catholic educational institution providing students with the highest quality educational opportunities in an atmosphere consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. We hear considerable discussion regarding STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) emphasis in education — our school expands that to STREAM, where art and religion have been added to STEM to better educate the whole student. The support from alumni of St. Peter’s Academy and Saratoga Central Catholic is used for maintaining facilities, improving academics and providing tuition assistance. A majority of funds from the Annual Alumni Appeal are allocated to tuition assistance — we thank you for that, and need your continued help. We invite you to become involved with our school; come visit, let us know when you schedule a reunion, attend athletic competitions and school-sponsored events, and let us know how you are doing. Please note that our Board meeting minutes are posted on the website at www.saratogacatholic.org
