The urgency behind this project is really a credit to the energy and commitment of our Upper School science faculty, Kristin Cole and Heidi Averette, who have generated a notable increase in student enthusiasm for the sciences. Whether it is through Miss Cole’s Young Scientist Club, a student group dedicated to using free time to explore topics in science, or Mrs. Averette’s “Science for Lunch” series, where working scientists come and

speak to students about their jobs, these teachers have gone above and beyond to make sure no student at St. Andrew’s thinks of science as anything but a living discipline with exciting real world applications. The Chemistry Lab renovation privileges student-centered learning, transforming the entire room into an

mission to provide our students with an authentic education that they immediately recognize as relevant

to their future lives. As enrollment in the most challenging science courses continues to grow, I am so happy that the new lab will give our science faculty the top-notch facilities their talents deserve. We are very appreciative of the generosity of the Raut family for making our vision a reality.

Sara RubinsteinHead of Upper School

Thanks to a generous gift from the Raut Family, the Upper School will be home to a new, state-of-the-art chemistry lab named in memory of Dr. K. B. Raut.

Other than the installment of student tables, there have been no renovations to the Chemistry Lab since Skinner Hall was originally built in 1986. A completely renovated lab provides the model for 21st

If you’re not familiar with the 5 C’s, ask your favorite St. Andrew’s student about them. Or join us for lunch: the C’s are emblazoned on our cafeteria wall. Here’s a quick refresher: the 5 C’s are Critical thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and Character. As the anchors of the 21st Century Teaching and Learning (21st C T&L) framework, these ideas touch everything we do at St. Andrew’s. We’re also, of course, an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. That may even be the reason you chose our school; it’s how my family found St. Andrew’s when we moved here last year. Our daughter, Anna (pictured above), was set to begin kindergarten at an IB school in San Diego, and when my husband’s job brought us here, one of

Andrew’s took us both on. While 21st C T&L gives us the 5 C’s, IB gives us

knowledgeable, principled, open-minded, caring, balanced,

risk-takers. The 21st Century framework and the IB learner

beauty is in the alchemy, and it is this distinctive chemistry

Both 21st Century T&L and IB argue that the scope of what schools must do and achieve is much broader than it was a half-century ago. (I’ve yet to meet anyone in education who disagrees with this, by the way.) Yet we

at St. Andrew’s are engaged in is re-thinking how we do our work. David Hargreaves (1998) coined the term “creative professionalism” to describe what goes on in schools that don’t simply transmit knowledge to students but which actually engage kids in generating it. Such schools recognize

that the nature of 21st-century life and work will require kids to know how to propose new solutions to fresh problems. Such schools teach students to take intellectual risks. Such schools, knowing the power of character, ask all of their stakeholders – students, teachers, parents, alumni – to engage in principled decision-making and action. Such schools know that because the pace and scope of life in the 21st century means rapid change, it is also our responsibility to help students learn to adapt while maintaining balance between all aspects of their lives. These ideas aren’t just in our classrooms. They’re in our faculty meetings, as we explore new ways to present content and skills. They’re in the cafeteria, where the kids are given the responsibility of recycling and clearing the decks for the next group. They’re in our community, wherever a St. Andrew’s student performs, competes, or volunteers. Careful readers may have noticed that I haven’t once mentioned technology. That may seem odd in a school in which each student has an iPad and teachers have won awards for using technology imaginatively. And that’s exactly it: at St. Andrew’s, technology isn’t an end in itself. That approach to technology limits its power. Technology at St. Andrew’s is a tool we learn to use, a resource we command to achieve our high goals for teaching and learning. So the next time you have a chat with a St. Andrew’s student, don’t just ask what she’s learning in science, art, or math. Ask her that, sure, but don’t forget to also inquire about her latest collaboration, or have a conversation about a project she’s working on, or something she’s creating. Chances are, you’ll learn more than you bargained for.

by Dr. Kendra Sisserson, Upper School Faculty

St. Andrew’s has just been named an Apple Distinguished School for the 2012-13 school year. The honor recognizes our use of the iPad and Apple technology as tools to create a relevant and engaging school experience for our students. The designation is reserved for schools that meet criteria for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence, and demonstrate Apple’s vision of exemplary learning environments.

Twenty seven St. Andrew’s students spent two weeks in France this fall. The group, led by our own Flo Thurston, visited our new sister school Saint-Denis during the weekdays and stayed with host families on the weekends visiting Paris.

Our International Baccalaureate

in the GISA one-act play region andKole, Will Gardner and Dustin Li received acting accolades.

146 Middle and Upper School music students performed at this year’s Winter Concert. The Trustees Theater served as a great location for the event. All in attendance were greeted in the lobby by a Middle School art show.

We know that those closest to St. Andrew’s are our best representatives for spreading the news.

The inaugural Board of Visitors for the school includes 36 community and business leaders. The primary objective for this group is to discover ways for the school to further enhance its involvement in the community.

The Lower School is now equipped with a state-of-the-art security system which requires

We invited our alums and their legacies to join us on St. Andrew’s Day. Mark Weeks ’84 gave the annual address followed by the planting of a crepe myrtle on campus by the Class of 2013. During a casual breakfast, several alums remembered burying a time capsule to mark their senior year. If you have any information, photos or stories about this past tradition, please share with us on the alum facebook page (saint andrew’s alumni).
