Emerge of sasrai-Movement

The year 2001 and 2002 a group of development worker engaged in conducting study on life and livelihood of Bangladesh coastal people. The group was committed, eagle eyed to reveal the reality and keen to identify the doings or best practices for the betterment of coastal community. They glittered and ignited to contemplate having a memorable sentence from old lady beside Sundarban, “we were without food, want of fire wood.” It is first time in life man or community compelled to go hungry want of fire wood they learned. Fire wood scarcity can cause hunger gave the team a new sight. They realize many things there in nature that cause, hunger for the human being in absence of needed cared. They also have mind human being on the way to scarce many natural resources that can cause the hunger, unbearable sufferings and migration.

Sequentially the team taught only income generation effort ie providing some material, money, housing, conventional skill training cannot secure the life of coastal people or any community. They were tenacious talking with different people, different aspect and enthusiastic to find some other clue. Mass people opine natural resource availability dilapidated rapidly that can create terrific hazard in life and livelihood across the country, globe. The study team figure out a common view of mass people that development activity focused on particular sector and section of people cannot address the emerging threat. It needs involvement of each individual and first step should be getting the each caring to the nature, secondly each person in the community would be caring to her/his available resources. There was another consensus that each individual has capacity to contribute for the nature no matter how small it is. And that’s only the path to save the nature as well as get the life climate threat, disaster, hunger and poverty free.

In a gathering of development worker at Cox’sBazar issue raised and discussed week long. Participants from different development organization joined here after their office work. Each participant was agreed on a critical issue that conventional development activities in the country far behind to meet the need of common people. They were in a consensus different project come with different theme community become hopeful to achieve something, do meeting and sitting. But after certain duration people become frustrated, take it as worthless and scenario prevails previous.

Based on the discussant observation and opinion there was a consensus each and every individual needed to be resource and nature caring as best as possible. And that’s should be the centre piece of each development initiative. To mobilize the mass people a slogan accepted `save a bit, reserve, preserve, rejuvenate and conserve resources.’ They tried to name the new initiative or movement and unanimously acknowledged after the series of dialogue.

Movement. Since then the movement alarmed the sensible mind, concerned different individual nationally and internationally.

Assumption in inception

sasrai is a Movement, a global movement, a movement towards reserve, preserve, rejuvenate and conserve. It is an appeal to the friends of the present and the future, an appeal to all, across the globe irrespective of sect, race, religion, caste, creed and ethnicity. We can all involve ourselves with the movement at any moment in our own unique way. Anyone who consciously thinks of saving anything acts in support of this movement. Every thought, every bit of saving and optimization contribute to mankind, nature, bio-diversity, ecology and environment.

Global community can be proud of many impressive achievements, but it is a great misfortune for us an overwhelming majority of humanity does not have access to basic needs and rights. Highly shameful for all, we have threatened the existence of our habitat, mother, planet earth. A large number of people abuse resources that scarcely available to major portion of people. Abuse is evident everywhere – at home, work place. It is the time to pause, look back and reflect.

01. Since time immemorial human civilization has found peace, only to destroy it again. Man have searched and researched, devised incredible machines, created means of production, has learned to generate wealth yet has not been sensitive, cautious, or sincere to environment. Man has wrought irreparable damage to the environment and has been responsible for the extinction of many species of living organisms.

02. Mankind has been ruthless to the nature. Among other things, man has decimated the forests, polluted the waters, hunted many living species to extinction and pierced the ozone layer. The irresponsible use of the natural systems has ushered in disastrous consequence. Nature in its infinite generosity has been patient and has borne the brunt of man’s actions silently. No more; it is angry and has started striking back. Voices can clearly be heard but Man does not pay heed to them and continues with his foolish ways.

03. It is time to reassess our attitude to life, living, nature and mother earth. Let us listen, think, debate, re-evaluate, search and research and agree on a minimum program to avoid disaster of monstrous proportion. Let not this century be mankind’s last on this earth.

04. sasrai will have a multi dimensional impact on all. It will have positive impact on people, community, nation, human race and the universe. Proponents would directly benefit in terms of reduction in daily or monthly expenditure. sasrai would do more with less, making existing resources last longer.

05. Commitment to frugal use of resources will directly affect other fellow beings. For instance inadequate water and power is common feature in all communities in developing world. Being vigilant against wastage would leave more power and water for the poor who access water and power with much difficulty.

06. Let us take up a missionary zeal, a sporting spirit to reserve, preserve, rejuvenate and conserve the invaluable resources for our next generation.

07. We believe that everyone could participate and own the program and could contribute to the movement. We believe in the human race unlimited creativity and potential. Given a little commitment any individual can preserve, reserve, rejuvenate and conserve resources in her/his personal life.

Interfaith Declaration on Climate Change The nurturing and respect for Life is a central doctrine of all faiths on Earth. Yet today we are endangering life on Earth with unacceptably high and rising levels of greenhouse gas emissions. These gases are destabilizing the global climate system, heating the Earth, acidifying the oceans, and putting both humanity and all living creatures at unacceptable risk.

The extraordinary delicacy of Nature’s balance is becoming increasingly apparent, even as human actions inflict ever larger, more dangerous and potentially irreversible changes on the indivisible web of atmosphere, earth, ocean and life that is creation. Today our faiths stand united in their call to care for the Earth, and to protect the poor and the suffering. Strong action on climate change is imperative by the principles and traditions of our faiths and the collective compassion, wisdom and leadership of humanity.

We recognize the science of climate change, and we call for global leaders to adopt strong, binding, science-based targets for the reduction of greenhouse gases in order to avert the worst dangers of a climate crisis. We urge the nations of Earth to ensure that those who will suffer under climate- induced changes such as more severe storms, floods, droughts and rising seas, be aided to adapt, survive and equitably prosper.

We recognize that climate change is not merely an economic or technical problem, but rather at its core is a moral, spiritual and cultural one. We therefore pledge to join together to teach and guide the people who follow the call of our faiths. We must all learn to live together within the shared limits of our planet.

We recognize that just as climate change presents us with great challenges, so too it offers great opportunities. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions can stimulate economies sustainably, protect our planet, lift up the poor, and unite to a common cause people threatened by a common danger. In this spirit, we call upon our leaders, those of our faiths, and all people of Earth to accept the reality of the common danger we face, the imperative and responsibility for immediate and decisive action, and the opportunity to change.

Preaching for the climate

Whether people are Buddhist, Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs etc – followers of all faiths are threatened by climate change. In the "Interfaith Declaration on Climate Change," more than 100 religious and non-religious groups called on world leaders to come to a binding agreement on fighting climate change.

The organizations involved appealed to the morals of their supporters, hoping to convince them that the planet’s resources are indeed limited. Back in 2009, representatives from some 30 religions and interdenominational groups took part in the religious conference "Many Heavens, One Earth" in Great Britain. The participants agreed to take on concrete projects: for instance, the Chinese Buddhists and Taoists wanted to limit the number of incense sticks to three per person to cut air pollution, and the Anglican church and the Sikhs committed to installing more solar panels on their prayer buildings.

And in 2010, a group of African religious leaders signed a declaration vowing to regularly touch on climate change themes in their sermons, emphasizing relevant verses in the holy texts that speak to the relation between man and nature. They also aim to teach their believers to lead more eco-friendly lives.

Quran instruct Muslims to protect nature or even become environmentalists?The Quran lays down quite basic ethical principles. And these are interpreted by the prophet in the way he behaved. For example, the Qur’an says quite emphatically in Chapter 6, verse 141: "Allah does not love the wasters." This verse was exemplified by the Prophet when he chided one of his companions for throwing away water he had left over in his bowl after he had washed himself. The Prophet told him to return the surplus water back to the river so that other people who need it further downstream can use it.

In the 12th century, St. Francis of Assisi preached that man must respect all creation and the environment. And that message was repeated again now, nearly a thousand years later, by the newly-elected head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis.

Its aimed to animate, activate each individual, family, community, institution, organization to combat Climate Change, Global warming, food, fuel and water security, poverty, disaster, waste, ecosystem and biodiversity etc.

Climate change, climate variability and extremes are affecting our food production and will most challenge our food security. Farmers and extension services have been baffled on ways to address this uncertainty, manage crop production and ensure good harvest. Climate change is a global problem, and yet each one of us has the power to make a difference. Even small changes in our daily behavior can help prevent greenhouse gas emissions without affecting our quality of life. In fact, they can help to save our money.

sasrai is an approach. Way to bring each in thinking-we must save our resources for our old age also for our next generation. It appeal to all –let’s we practice sasrai living, be less consuming, be keen as less as possible consumption. We must present a habitable earth to our next generation who haven’t exploited any resources from earth. Since 2004 we run it without any financial assistance from any donor.

It stands for giving up the luxuries that destroy the earth's resources. It stands for reuse, recycling, repair as maximum as possible. The students, the youth, the hope

of the future, can start it devising their way of serving the humanity, the planet. We encourage devising own instead of suggesting, directing like big brother. Because environment doesn’t accept, tolerate dictation from powerful or appeal from powerless.  We are open in share of our vision, mission, learning and experience. We try to start the initiative in our personal life, at homes. The students and teachers here are encouraged to start practice in their personal life, class rooms, in schools and homes. Then they could appeal to friends, neighbors, relatives and to the others.  We try to use empty pots, small pieces of land by planting saplings. Our preferences are medicinal plants, vegetables. We try to avoid one-time-use items. We try to switch off our electric bulbs and fans for at least one minute a day. We encourage avoiding using air conditioners. We sit with the students and teachers and they collectively decide their steps. We start in a smaller way. We try to avoid to be dominating. We think if any organizational structure is formed then all have to take the post of "leader" by rotation. We believe in local resources and fund to launch any initiative. Hope, we can talk on more functional issues in future.

Till today we have taken decisions collectively in a democratic and participatory way. We generate funds by selling used/old household items, by putting own labor. We encourage in cutting luxury, unnecessary cell phone call, avoiding cool drinks, junk, fast food etc. We try to walk as maximum as possible but obviously not at the expense of health and time. We do hope and belive sasrai shall sustain forever and serve the each creature and being appreciated as most desired and aspired way of living across the globe.

2012 was the year of Hurricane Sandy, Typhoon Bopha, and unprecedented droughts and wildfires the world over. Global food prices rose by 6% and we hit 333 consecutive months of above-average temperatures, as half the Arctic ice disappeared into the ocean.In short, 2012 was the year of extreme weather and climate change. And that's why 2013 must and will be year zero in our fight against it.This will be the year we look back upon when everything changed -- when we rose up to meet the challenge of climate change at the scale that it required, and the world rose with us.

Please look the unwanted situation coming due to `increased global energy demand.’ For the adaptation we must restraint the energy demand. It is possible if global community have a mindset to – reduce their consumption, luxury. If consumption pattern or fashion same and continued Businessman will go for production, set up new industry, energy demand would rise day by day. Global community experienced the threat none ever before the issue like Climate Change. Nature’s behavior has been regularly irregular and erratic. The basic securities of food, water, energy, livelihood and human life highly threatened.

Bangladesh has been identified as most vulnerable country by the scientists and policy makers across the world. Adverse impact already been started, extreme events like severe cyclones and increased salinity in the coastal region, prolonged and repeated floods and river bank erosion in the northern and central parts, drought in the northwestern parts, and increased salinity conspire against the country and force us to confront the various insecurities economically, socially and environmentally. It is apprehended that the possible sea level rise will affect the country by inundating coastal areas of Bangladesh - ecosystems, water, agriculture and food production. One meter sea level rise may dislocate about 35 million people from coastal districts by the year 2050, if not earlier. These may create severe problems for rural livelihood, local, regional and sectoral development such as agriculture, water and health. The emerging climate refugees will put enormous pressure on the urban economy and infrastructure as well as on basic services such as water supply, power, health, sanitation and demand for energy.

One nation cannot address the said problem. It needs concerted, coordinated effort of global community. Bangladesh should have own strategic plan in adaptation based on proper assessment in present and future climate impacts. We believe in short future we would get national decision regarding our doings.

We trying different program on Climate Change Adaptation Option Promotion in different district of Bangladesh and our volunteer working different corner of the globe having limited resource and expertise.

Our major thrust is bringing significant change in mindset among all, “we should face our problem and we must find our own solution.” No matter how poor the community there is some resources that could be tapped. Each individual and

community should be aware that external individual or agency cannot solve all those. Problem must be prioritized, addressed and solved by the community, by their own effort through optimum utilization of available resources.

Through our program we promote austerity (sasrai-Movement) aimed at control the climate vulnerability such as food security, hunger, poverty, water and sanitation, waste management, environmental degradation etc.

People getting awareness on global warming resultant climate change – climatic impacts. People are asked to identify their problems, risk and root cause of those in participatory way. Having that list they again asked find the way out of those problems.

Community people are upgrading themselves to find the problem, causes of problem and solution of problem. People are thinking, planning and trying in different way being saved from current climatic impacts like drought, heavy rainfall and cool.

Our prime priority is economy and caring use of natural resources that highly accepted by the community. We are on process to strengthen the program in educational institution bringing significant behavioral and attitudinal change among the children and propel the Child to Adult approach.

Climate Change AdaptationNo matter where or what ways we live there is some problem. Human being always faces some problem or we can say life cannot goes without problem. Individual, family and community are in problem. Those innumerable problems caused – most of by their behavior or lack of planning, some by social anomaly, some by nature, some by geographic, climatic etc. Life may not be problem free but there is a way to mitigate the intensity, reduce risk, vulnerability.

Problems are not same across the country/globe. It varies based on place and season. Each individual and community should be aware that external individual or agency cannot solve all those. They could provide some support only. Problem must be prioritized, addressed and solved by the community, by their own effort through optimum utilization of available resources. No matter how poor the community still there is some resources that could be tapped.

Problems should be identified prudently, participatory manner and efficiently. To address those problems in easier way there must be a collective and participatory plan that implemented through collective effort. Community should be patience to shoulder repeated exercise to chalk out their problems, prioritize and address those in a planned manner. Each and everyone should have the quality in `share the experiences and honor the differences.’ To address the problem there should be cooperative, collaborative and concerted effort. To ensure said effort leader should be accommodative, democratic. There must have participatory decision making process and consensus would be reflecting the decisions of maximum people.

At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger.

It was the direction of conscience, `what we doing and what’s the net result of total activity in the name of development.’ The idea came as just sudden blow in mind, to be pondering on output/production/result/net-gaining of non governmental initiative in the country in the name of poverty alleviation, end hunger, food for poor, poverty safety-net, rights for all, dignity for all, disaster preparedness etc. It is the focus on truth that’s covered carefully by some clever development actor top to bottom.

Last half of the year 2000 a group of Development workers team deployed to conduct study on life and livelihood of the coastal community. Along with the official assignment these NGO worker got insight to be keen to get the real direction that contributes to build their nation specially the bigger section poorer, more specifically women and children. They prompted dialogue wherever possible irrespective class, religion, profession to get the peoples’ voice and choice.

In fact the team member self motivated or guided to assess the net result of their unbearable labor and sufferings in the name of development work ie how much effective the NGO initiatives - aimed at alleviate the poverty or mass peoples’ sorrow. They tried to make themselves confident firs whether they are on track or misguided. They glittered and ignited to contemplate having a memorable sentence from old lady beside Sundarban, “we were without food, want of fire wood.” They just learned first time in life man or community compelled to go hungry want of fire wood. They were moved with the sentence or new learning – fire wood scarcity can cause hunger. They got a new sight – there are many things in nature that cause hunger for the human being if it is not cared properly. They also have mind by this time human being damaged many natural resources that can cause the hunger even migrating.

They tried to teach themselves or wholehearted to learn more or narrow down their foolish doings or performing. They tried to find the new way of living, thinking, doing, practicing etc. The revelation was sasrai. They were astounding community or family needs not any assistance from anyone if sasrai practiced in real term. They invented, to end poverty, hunger, disaster, illiteracy etc only the path is sasrai. They also learned in absence of sasrai there will be an extinction process start and day by day intensified.
