SaT5G - Satellite And Terrestrial network for 5G
Contributing to the 5GPPP use case “Broadband access everywhere”, SaT5G will foster the implementation of solutions enabling the “plug and play” integration of satellite communications in 5G networks
Hence, SaT5G project researched the key technology enablers and validated use-cases by demonstration in live 5G testbeds
SaT5G project outcomes will contribute in enabling the satellite industry to join the European initiative in the deployment of a competitive and ubiquitous 5G network globally

SaT5G - Satellite And Terrestrial network for 5G
We have experienced delays in the submission of deliverables mainly due to:
• Greater effort than originally envisaged was required for some tasks;
• Numerous tasks are running in parallel so prioritisation of resources was necessary to avoid
major impact on project schedule and testbed demonstrations;

Project Management Update (3/4)
WP1 – Project Management
In terms of milestones, the project has successfully completed all the rest of the milestones:
MS3 Critical design review, which is related to the deliverable D3.1, which focuses on the definition of the Reference integrated satellite-terrestrial network architecture, which was completed as an interim version in August 2018.
MS4 Validation readiness review was completed by June 2019 along with framework for research pillars put in place
MS5 Demo readiness review, was completed in September 2019 which made sure the individual testbeds were ready for demonstrations.
MS6 Final internal review and MS7 Project Completion are the closure activities, which is envisaged to be completed before end of May 2020 as delays have been noticed due to Covid-19 pandemic crisis.
SaT5G - Satellite And Terrestrial network for 5G
WP Deviation Justification Potential implications
WP4.
4
Studies concentrate on
the long-term approach “5G
over satellite link”.
It is better to concentrate limited
efforts on the more relevant approach
- Going straight forward to the best
solution from market perspective,
- Leveraging on-going telecom
standard and challenge vendors to
design a satellite friendly waveform.
Hybrid “5G and DVB”
will not be analysed
But the “Mid term”
approach has been done
in the SaT5G delivery,
“D3.4; Satellite and 3GPP
NextGen Reference
Interface,” 2018 and the
ETSI TR 103 611
“Seamless integration
of satellite and/or HAPS
(High Altitude Platform
Station) systems into 5G
and related architecture
options”.
WP4.
5
Developed Set of Security
Functions was not produced.
Investigation in this work package
showed that there was no need to
develop a new set of security
functions.
No implications.

Financial Reporting (1/2)
WP Deviation Justification
1 26% Extension of the project resulted in more management effort
2 52%More WP2 activities were completed in and also extension period kept
WP2 alive after November with more activities.
3 38% More effort was required for some of the partners in this WP
4 22%Research pillar activities were carried out till up to November and
write-ups were done during the extension period.
5 28%
More WP5 activities were done during the extension period. Extra
effort was put into EuCNC 2019 live demonstrations
6 10%EuCNC 2019 booth arrangement etc. and other dissemination
activities for this conference created an overspent for some partners.
WP1 – Project Management
SaT5G - Satellite And Terrestrial network for 5G
There is an overspent overall in Effortcost due to project extension.

Key Risks (program)
Risk Mitigation strategy Status
The mobile test-bed might not be live with O3b
satellites integration completed on time.
Extra time was needed to pursue and complete
the MEO over-the-air demo (High-Fly - as it is
using real satellites). The O3b beam availability
was secured for SaT5G ZII testbed measurements
and demonstration activities for December 2019
period. However, the team also, in parallel, had a
second setup with Low-Fly (as this is an
emulation), emulating the GEO satellite option
and using the already established IPsec tunnel (L3
VPN) between ZII (Munich) and Gilat offices (Tel
Aviv).
