Getting Ready for January 2013

Step 2: Generate the Intelligent Mail Barcode

While the POSTNET™ barcode only included address correction data, the Basic IM barcode includes both address correction and sort information.

1. If you haven’t already, run Address Correction on your list to generate delivery point information for the barcode.

2. On the first page of the Mail Sort wizard, select Basic Intelligent Mail.

4. On the Intelligent Mail Settings page, uncheck the Sequence mail pieces option. Sequencing is not required for Basic Intelligent Mail.

5. Run the mail sort. The Intelligent Mail barcode is generated as the list is sorted.

Step 3: Print the Intelligent Mail Barcode

To print the Intelligent Mail barcode from a new print template:

2. Select your printer type, driver and paper size in the wizard.

To print the Intelligent Mail barcode from an existing print template:

1. Open the Print Mail template.

2. Click once on the Address Block that contains your barcode.

3. On the properties panel to the right, find the Barcode Type setting. This is usually the first option.

4. Click POSTNET next to Barcode Type, and select Intelligent Mail instead.

5. Click the Go to Preview Mode button in the upper left corner.

To print the Intelligent Mail barcode outside Satori Software products:

1. When exporting your list, include the IM Barcode and/or Numeric IM Barcode fields.

2. Most printing programs use the regular IM barcode field. If your program needs the Numeric IM barcode, see your program manufacturer for more information.

3. To use the IM barcode field, add the field to your print program. Edit the font properties to use the USPS4CB font at 16 point size. This font is installed with your software.

Step 4: Test your printed Intelligent Mail Barcodes

The IM barcode has readability requirements similar to the POSTNET barcode. Testing your printed barcodes can help reduce entry problems when you submit your first IM barcoded mailing.

1. Print 5-20 samples of your mail piece with the IM barcode.

2. Contact your USPS Mailpiece Design Analyst to have the samples tested. To find your local MDA, visit http://pe.usps.com/mpdesign/mpdfr_mda_lookup.asp

3. Submit your pieces to your MDA, and work through any requested design changes.

After you have completed these four steps, you are ready to send your first mailing with Intelligent Mail barcodes.
