MESSAGE ON THE DEATH ANNIVERSARY OFHAZUR BABA SAWAN SINGH JI MAHARAJ

San t Kirpal Singh Ji

Dear Children,On this auspicious day of the.blessed memory of my Master Baba Sawan Singh

Ji Maharaj, I send you my hearty message. You have been put on the broad way back to God. If you want to develop on

the way of the new life, you should be broad-minded and be not intolerant. Youshould not behave like a frog in the well, but give a hand of fellowship to all workingfor the common cause of the Master and rise above petty considerations to heightsof life throught the power of inner silence brought about by meditations. Try todive deep into the depths of the heart, and avoid superficial life. This can only beactivated by love, selfless service and sacrifice for the higher purpose of life. A ded-icated life knows no burdens or sufferings. He lives for God's work and as such leadsa life of detachment.

There are two ways - one leading to life and the other to destruction; calledSharey Marg and Piray Marg. Piray Marg relates to objective life and appears allbeautiful and easy to follow but it results in hatred and malevolence, rigid idealogyand obsessive self. The way of Sharey Marg lies in developing inner silence, whichis harder to find. It is an uphill task and takes hard work of mind and body andpurification of spirit.

When you will become broad-minded and have risen in the heights of life bysacrificing everything, you will find a vision of the Lord working in all alike, in saintsand the sinners, in all men and in all creation, in all, birds and beasts, in all religions,in all scriptures and in all prophets.

In silence we test ourselves to find weaknesses to be weeded out. We have towrestle with darkness and develop moral muscles and receive the message of thespirit. We must be for sometime at least alone with God. When we enter more andmore into silence, our desires will be eliminated, purity attained, and the body andthe mind sanctified, and we will taste the Elixer of Naam Divine and know howsweet the Name is.

April 2, 1967

In silence the heart illumines; veil after veil is removed. In the heart shineth theLight, and the very silence becomes vocal giving vent to the Music of the Spheres re-verberating in all creation. When the light is seen shining within your heart and theMusic of the Spheres becomes audible. Oll behold the light in all that is outside:you see the One Light in all. This is the Universal Vision that the One is in all andall are in One. Blessed is he, the man of Illumination, for wherever he be hedwelleth with the One Eternal.

Such is a blessed one who belongeth not to this color or caste or creed; he be-longeth to all. The great mystic Rumi says:

I am neither Christian nor JeH

Neither Gaber nor Turk

I am not of the East - I am not of the West

Not of the land am I - Not of the sea

I belong to the soul of the Beloved

I have seen that the two are One.

And One I see - And One I know

One I see - One I adore

He is the First - And He is the Last

He is the au tward - And He is the inward too.

This is the ultimate Goal before each one of you. I wish all who care to aenLJe1rr

this Goal. All feasible help of the Master will be at hand.

With all love to each one of you,

Yours affectionately

Pangs of SeparationSant Kirpal Singh Ji

r

Beloved laster Kirpal Singh

While on His first world tour, Master KirpalSingh translated a hymn which was sung duringHis visit to Washington D. C on September 26,1955...

This was just written at the time of ourMaster, you see. He says, "I am given up to myMaster so much so, that I never dream of myself, that my body ever existed. All the same, I amabsorbed in thinking of my Master so much sothat I have begun to lose my own self, this outerself; I see that it is He alone." Without seeingHim, how can we be at rest? Can we be at rest

if our hearts have just been attached to -0 eMaster? When you are attached to 0 e'you cannot live without Him, you ee.always want to see Him, to be near Hi .one with Him, to be absorbed in Him .natural thing that happens. He say. ".1 'like this: that I see my Master, I \ am to be eHim, always with Him, never be separated -TOHim even for a while. Well, how can I be at re .You people tell me, 'All right, have consola '0 •never mind, have heart.' How can I take hYou see, when I'm attached to omebowant to be with Him all the while. ,. How

remain away from Him? Guru Amar Das says,"Well, look here, if I just remain away even fora while, for a minute, well, that I take to be aslong as fifty years."

Naturally separation comes and this separa-tion goes to help us a good deal, I tell you. WhenI left India, there were thousands of men sittingthere; they were all in tears. What did I tellthem? "This separation will give you an impetus,a lift inside. That will cut you away from allouter attachments. In separation, naturally youwill forget everything else, is it not so? But justmake the best use of the golden opportunitythat you are now having." These are the wordsthat I told the thousands of them who werethere -- there in tears. Then I told them, "Godhas given you this opportunity. Just make thebest use of it. If you feel separation, sit in sweetmeditation and see Him inside. That will cut youoff from the other side. You can make the bestuse of the time that way." I told them that Ido not like to go away, bu t in the words ofChrist, I have many sheep to look after.

Here again I may tell you, that if you feelsome pangs of separation, just make the bestuse of those feelings by turning inside. You'llbe cut off from outside; that will help a gooddeal, you see. Just make the best use of thosepangs of separation.

(hymn)Kaaba is the place of pilgrimage of the

Mohammedan world, and idols are kept in thetemples of the Hindus. He said that somepeople go to the Kaaba, the pilgrimage of theMohammedans; the others go to the Hindu tem-ples. He says, "I am not concerned with any ofthe two. Wherever my Master will tell me topay homage, I will obey and go there. To me,God is everywhere. I am not attached or boundto any holy place of pilgrimage. I am not for anyholy places of worship. Wherever my Masterwould advise me, direct me to turn my face, Iwould turn that way." That's all. He says, "Allis holy where devotion kneels. The body is thetemple of God - turn inside. I have love for allof these things, but I am not attached to them.I am attached to my Master. Whatever way Hewill direct me, I will simply pay homage thatway. To me, His words are God's words becauseHe is the mouthpiece of God."

(hymn)A lover of God just looks to His Master as

the embodiment of God. God is speakingthrough Him. His word to him is a scripture. What are scriptures? They're the words of wis-dom uttered by the Masters. So such were theconditions in those days, and these words weregiven out at the time, in separation and sweetremembrance of the Master. For a devotee of

God, well, the words of a Godman are hisscriptures. He's not concerned with one count:~or the other. He's not attached to one socialreligion or the other. He's not attached to oneplace of pilgrimage or the other. All are holy toHim. He has respect for all, but above all He hasrespect for the words of his Master. Because.those are the words which bring home the truthof all religions.

(Mr. Khanna says that Master has composeda poem and that he will translate it)

Very practically, you see, in none of mypoems will you find one thing: either joy orhappiness. The pity is that in 1927, two or threeyears after my initiation, I foresaw my Masterpassing away. So I lived with Him after that for21 long years and I was always dreading it. Ijust gave out in poems the exact month He wasto pass away. And He passed away in that samemonth. So I always had that view before me andnever was happy even for an hour. To sit at theFeet of a Living Master is a great blessing, I tellyou. a words can express it. You are put onthe way back to God, you are brought in con-tact with the God-Power within and you arepromised companionship, constant companion-ship until the end of the world.

I used to pray to my Master, you see, some-times when we were all alone, because I dreadedthat thing all the while. I asked Him this manytimes: "Well Master, I pray to you for one gift."He said "What?" "Send me before you go."He always answered back, "No, it cannot bedone. You have to work. It can't be done." Henever refused me anything except this, excuseme. He did agree, you see, for eight months; be-cause in August 1947, He was just ready to go.He made all the arrangements, all the accountswere settled, the balance sheet was prepared. Hesent for. me. I was sitting all alone with Him.He said, "Well, look here, you have to pay suchand such a man so much, after I go." He was giv-ing me instructions, some details on this andthat thing. Then He told me, "Well, the balancesheet of the accounts are being prepared. Thatwill be shown to you on the next morning."Any blind man would see what He was going tosay after that. I simply just spread my heartbefore Him. I told Him with tears in my eyes, Isaid, "Master, I never asked anything from Youduring my whole life." (That did not mean thatwhat I wanted was not given to me. Those thingswere given to me unasked for.) "But today I askYou for one gift, one favor." "Well, tell me whatyou want." "Only that You remain with us."He kept quiet, then said, "All right." He wasvery' sick; He just laid down and I went away, and I returned to Him after about four hours. He called me, "Well, look here, what you askedof me, what you want, that will be done for

some time." So that was done. He lived up toApril 1948. Consider yourself fortunate for the

r" ime you can have with the Master and formore you can live up to what He says.

God is within you.just try to go within. Heill orne to you within, talk to you, you see.

This is how you can live with Him forever. You cannot underrate outward things also. All Ican say is that I had a very awful experience ofHis death. If all the hymns of all the Masterwere just gathered together, what all the Ma terhave said, they would not equal in quantity thatwhich I gave out about being in separation. Iwould have pangs of separation, pining, crying.hollering like anything.

(hymn)This is just in praise of the Master. "When

You appear outside, You make Your appear-ance before the public - well that's a very beau-tiful scene, very enchanting, a very attractivescene. Your eyes are just God-intoxicated, theygive intoxication to the world over to whoevercomes to you. And sweet, Your words are sweet-er than honey or anything like that - very sweetwords. Consoling, you see, giving solace, just likeputting some ointment or sometimes bandageson the wounds. Your sweet words, they worklike that. But you always promised that youwould remain with us. We have just been think-ing that You are this man-body and You'llnever leave us. But You had to leave us. Thatwas Your promise that You made - it was notvery correct." Master never leaves us till the endof the world; but the bodies do leave. We takeHim as a body first, and we think that He willnever leave us as a man-body. But He has toleave.

(hymn)He says, "Now I am at Your Feet, just give

me the gift of Your appearance. You appear tome; give me Your darshan. So long as You donot appear before me, I just console my mindby looking at the window through which youused to appear." These are lovelorn thoughts."] simply look at the door or the windowthrough which You used to appear to us. Solong as You cannot appear, I am sitting hereconsoling my mind. Will You appear to me?For how long wiII You continue this solace, consoling our mind by only looking at the win-dow through which You used to appear?"

(hymn)He says, "I pray that this window through

which You used to appear to me, that it willremain forever. You see, that window is alsoblessed through which You used to appear tous." For the love of God, we have got love ofGodman and for the love of Godman, every-

thing that comes in contact with Him -also love. That all.

(hymn)He just says, "Well Your eye

of wine and nectar through whi hwill look at you. They also become u& ._•• ~."

with that; they get intoxicated. Ththat You wear over the head, that is imb: s e- ,,

with the love of God; that also give the ~i a,lating rays of love. And Your eyebrows. _just shine out in all the glory of God." Th Ra i-ant Form of the Master gives off Light. on -times for miles.

If you just look at Him outside with onfixed gaze, that form changes into so manythings, in so many ways. When I used to go tomy Master, I sat among hundreds and thou andand I always sat in the back and looked to theface of the Master continuously. And Hi fa ewas changing in so many ways, you see, at everymoment changing into a new glory of it. Ansome people who also used to sit in front a '"~came to me and sat by me in the back. Thejsaid, "Oh, Master looks very beautiful frohere." They used to leave the front seat ancome back to sit with me.

One Mohammedan Saint says, "Well. 100 -here, if these hairs on my body all turn in aeyes, then with so many eyes I will look at thface of my Master." At every momen t that gi .a new intoxication, a new glory of His facecause it is not only a face - that is the man- 01through which that Divine Glory work ..those whose eyes are. open, they see. To at e =He looks like an ordinary man. There are peawho put Christ to the cross also. And therothers who treat them like they are God. 1are the son of the Living God, you ee .. 1see Masters; but as He really is, that way. o.very few people see - only to whom threveals.

(hymn)He says, "Your flowing beard. whi e _

wool, goes down to the breast and shine ~-with the Light of God through it." Iy .'L - e .beard was very beautiful, r tell you. I-white, and if you would look at His bwould appear to have small tiny goldeflashing through it. When you look aryou see so many things. The personalyou see, they di ffer. In the godly men ..find their auras are golden and just likeIn that aura you find so many wave go' . .::through it. He says, "Just appear to m . 0Master. I am fond of that Face, through whithe Light of God shines forth." That youinside too, when you just go within; but out ialso, when you dwell on that, you see so mawonders.

Never Give Up Your SimranHasur Baba Sawan Singh It

The following is a letter written by Great Master Hazur BabaSwan Singh Ji on September 6, 1944 to one of His disciples.

There are many reasons for the mind being averse to turning within and finding medita-tion distasteful. When a person begins meditation he should keep watch over his mind. Itis very essential that the mind should be restrained from going out, and if it does go out,it should be brought back within every moment it goes out. Let the mind understand thatyou are now going to devote the next one to three hours in meditation and it should notdisturb you by entertaining any extraneous thoughts. If such thoughts arise, throw themout. In this way, the mind will form the habit of staying within, and once it stays it shallstart relishing the sweetness inside.

Sometimes it happens that owing to some worry or anxiety, the mind finds medita-tion distasteful. At such moments try to explain to the mind that our fate was fixed and set-tled at the time of our birth, and it is now not subject to any change. Whatever is ordainedmust come to pass; no amount of worry will be of any avail. We should try to find a remedyfor whatever is the cause of WOrty instead of allowing it to disturb us during meditation. When you get up from meditation, take effective measures to put an end to the worry onceand for all. If you give free reins to the mind instead of checking it, even six hours medita-tion will be of no purpose. During the day, if you have an occasion to go out for a walk orwhen you are studying or when you are not doing anything at all, keep your mind busy withSimran. Go to sleep while doing your Simran, and when you wake lip you will feel as ifyou are getting up [rom your Simran. By forming such habits, you will be able to controlyour mind during meditation.

The mind is our only enemy in this world, the Vedas and Shastras and other holybooks being intended to teach us how to control the mind. Do not lose heart. Go on steadi-ly on the Path, and once your Simran becomes perfect you will find yourself endowed withthe power to stop a speeding train. There is so much power in Simran.

It is not wrong for a Satsangi to desire that another person be initiated. Try to explainthings to him gently, and if he Sincerely desires initiation, then only should he be presentedfor initiation. It is no use forcing another person in this matter as otherwise you will be tak-ing the load of his karmas on yourself Ifa Sa tsangi prays for the initiation of a person whois not destined by the Lord to be initiated, then his prayer will go in vain, but it is notwrong to have such a desire.

Whether your relations like it or 110t, never give up your Simran. Don't give up Simraneven if a lifetime of meditation has not produced any satisfactory results.

Caressed with Heavenly LoveDr. Richard Seader

The following report has been written in remem-brance of the wonderful experiences I had withMaster Darshan Singh Ji from March I throughMarch 16, 1976 at His Holy Feet in India.

Master Darshan is so full of Divine peaceand love. Each day when He would meet withus, as He entered the room each soul would bedrawn towards Him with ethereal magnetism. He flows among the dear ones effortlessly andeach is bathed in His loving remembrance ofHazur and Kirpal.

Everyone comes to Him at all hours of theday and night with their problems and theiryearnings for God. He joyously greets themwith deep empathy and compassion. The sooth-ing words of the Master flow softly from His lips, dancing to the lyrical melody of His poeticalvoice. When you see His eyes light up within Hisbeaming smile, your heart knows that everythingwill be all right and that you are much loved. He has love for all.

It appears to me that Master Darshan seeseveryone as a beautiful poem, and the God Poweris working through Him to put on the finishingtouches. He caresses your heart with DivineLove and breaks down your defensive walls. Heopens you up to a new way of Living. A refresh-ing purity overcomes you; His complete surren-der to God leaves you in a timeless state; Hebathes you with His peace.

The Divine grandeur of Sawan and Kirpal isembedded so modestly and humbly within Him,creating a human warmth which irresistiblydraws one close to Him. During His many hoursof selfless work He never claims any credit forHimself, but constantly sings praises to theMaster Power for sending His Grace. He is veryunassuming; he brings you close to Him and sitsright down beside you on the floor. He makesyou feel that you are part of the family. Hewan ts everyone to open up their hearts and feelloved.

Above picture shows the Present Living Master Darshan Singh giving a beautiful talk in Hauz Khas Park.(The Master's talk given on the occasion is on page 12) Dr. Richard Seader is seen filming the Master.

When it comes to babies and children, Ihave never seen anyone adore them more. Aftertalking to one Indian family from America, theMaster glanced at their little toddler and signaledfor him to come closer. A child like innocenceand joy came over Master's face. As the childdrew near, Master tenderly ran His fingersthrough the babe's long curly hair. Master'shands caressed the child's cheeks and then em-braced him with much warmth several times. He filled the child's hands with parshad and senthim back to his mother all starry eyed andhappy. .. On another occasion, Master was onHis way to the office. Making His way throughmany disciples, He singled out a small baby whowas held securely in her mother's arms. Mastercalmly stopped, delicately pinched both hercheeks, kissed her forehead and with a big smilecontinued on His way to work. It was verytouching; Master has time for everyone no mat-ter how small; No matter how busy He is, noone gets turned away.

There are so many beautiful experiencesthat I could relate to you but I will just mentiona few remembrances which exemplify how Hispresence infuses love in everyone. Master's eldestson Raji had been away in America for sevenyears. It was during my stay that he returnedhome. .. It was truly the most moving home-coming that I had ever seen. The Master's Loveencompassed everything.

When Master Darshan smiles, He becomesso radiant that everyone is filled with joy. Itwas very soon after I arrived in India that I re-alized I hadn't seen so many beaming, smilingfaces in months. It was uncontrollably conta-gious!

On one occasion Master was giving privateinterviews at Mona's cottage until about two inthe morning. At midnight most people werestarting to come out of meditation. As wewere sitting in the large room downstairs webegan to smile at each other. Then a fewsisters started giggling. It started to spread, and within minutes we couldn't control our-selves. So I got up to go upstairs to meditateoutside the room where Master was staying. When I got there, sisters Kathy and Tracy weresitting on the steps giggling just as much as thepeople downstairs! So I gave in and we all sattogether, joyously in His Remembrance, likelittle children playing in the lap of the father.

The last Sunday I was in India Mastershowered us with His loving presence. In themorning there was the weekly Satsang. Around3 P.M. Master arrived at Mona's cottage topartake in a filming session at a local park. Itwas such a treat to see Master blend in with allof nature. For over an hour He told us storiesabout the days with Hazur and Kirpal.

Master Darshan so beautifully reassured

us of the fulfillment of our destiny. On one oc-casion He said to Me:

You should be rest assured our Be-loved Master told us, "I'll never leavethee nor forsake thee till the end of theworld. " And Hazur used to say that when-ever a Master initiates a disciple He sitswithin the disciple and does not leave heror him until they have reached their eternalHome, Sach Khand. So rest assured thatonce you have been initiated by the great-est of the Masters you are bound to reachSach Khand. You'll certainly reach there!

I think my most moving experience withMaster Darshan occured on the very last night. The Westerners congregated at Mona's cottage.I asked Master if I could playa short tape con-taining messages from initiates recorded justbefore my flight to India. While listening tothe loving and longing messages of His belovedchildren the Master became as still as eternity, with that far off look in His eyes. When thetape was done the Master's eyes were moist. He was bound by their love so much He be-came choked up inside and could hardly speak. No words can express this look of love on Hisface. After a few moments of silence thesewords poured forth from His Heart:

Dear brothers and sisters - Thank youvery much for your kind and loving mes-sages. Thank you to those who have putthe messages in words and to those alsowho have not spoken, because the languageof love is silence and silence is somethingmore eloquent than speech. To those ofyou who have visited us in India after ourBeloved Master left the earthly sojourn I'lltranslate two verses, one from Sheiksadiand one from myself to express my feel-ings. Sheiksadi has said, "My eyes andheart are going with you. You should notimagine that you are going alone." Andnow I'll translate my own words. "Dailylimitations of time and space will not beable to separate us. You may be awayfrom my physical eyes, but you are neveraway from my heart. "

And to those of you who have notcome here physically after the BelovedMaster's departure, I most heartily inviteall of you to come here as and when it isconvenient for you to do so. We are allchildren of Kirpal and Sawan and thisplace is always open to all of us. Thisis not my place. This is not any particularindividual's place. This is a place for allof you, and all of us. So I most heartilyreciprocate your warm feelings.

You would recall that our BelovedMaster used to tell us repeatedly, "If youlove me keep my commandments." So,we should all try to live up to His teachingsas His commandments Kindly spend themaximum possible time in meditation andin the sweet remembrance, so that we areable to achieve the very purpose of ourLife, which is the ultimate communion ofour soul with God. This ultimate com-munion of our soul with God has two

..

stages. The first stage is the communionwith our own Beloved Master. We haveto merge ourselves in our Beloved Masterfirst. And then our Beloved Master willtake us on the higher planes and ultimatelyhelp us in communion with the Almighty.

All of you who are initiates of our Be-loved Master are very much on my mind al-ways and are very near and dear to me. Ithank you all once again for your lovingand kind messages.

AN AFTERNOON IN HAUZ KHAS PARK

Jamie Smith

It all began following Sa tsang at TilakNagar one beautiful Sunday in March. Sant Dar-shan Singh Ji had permitted a schedule to be ar-ranged so that in the afternoon He could beamongst the visiting disciples. A large groupfrom Europe were nearing the end of their threeweek stay including about 17 from Switzerland,Germany and Italy. Most of them had beenblessed with the gift of Naam from Sant KirpalSingh Ji Maharaj and were most happy to ex-perience that same bliss and witness that sameGodpower in His Gurumukh Son, Spiritual Suc-cessor Sant Darshan Singh Ji. However, therewere a small number who were sincere seekersafter truth, not yet initiated by a competentMaster, who were looking for some link, someconscious contact with the Lord and they hadcome to Master Darshan Singh for His spiritualguidance. After meeting with Him they wereconvinced enough to request the boon of HolyInitiation into the Divine Seeing and Hearing ofthe Light and Sound of God which, when con-tacted, will eventually bring the soul back to itssource, the Oversoul. Five came forward andwere accepted into the mysteries of the beyondby Sant Darshan Singh Ji. During the sitting formeditation all had a wonderful experience ofseeing the Divine Lights and hearing the audiblestrains of Holy Sound Current, referred to in theBible as the Holy Ghost or Word and in otherreligions as Sarosha, Bani, aam or Shabd. Sev-eral had the blessing of witnessing all threeMasters inside, (Baba Sawan Singh Ji Maharaj,Sant Kirpal Singh Ji Maharaj and the presentliving Master Sant Darshan Singh Ji). Such is thewondrous and continuous power of God work-ing through His chosen Human Pole.

One dear brother from America was near-

ing the end of his stay and it was his request tofilm Master Darshan Singh in a park withflowers, and he requested that during the film-ing the Master might speak on the Path Divine.

So off we went from Mona's Cottage toHauz Khas Park, a most beautiful and quietplace, to feast on the Lord of Love Incarnatefor well close to three hours. During this timeHe spoke of His early years and His initiation atthe Feet of Hazur Baba Saw an Singh Ji at Beas.

What a sight to behold in the lap of the Be-loved; a happy family amidst a most beautifulsetting in nature.

The happiness that is gained in the presenceof the Living Master is indeed unfathomable indepth. The Nectar of His Love is with us and inHis presence one is truly transported to a strangenew timeless world overflowing with bliss andlove. What enjoyment on earth can I dream ofthat compares to it? As we sat at Beloved Dar-shan's feet listening to His enchanting remem-brances of our Beloved Master Kirpal, the Lightof God was softly surging around His face andform, sometimes changing into the form of Kir-pal.

What treasure can compare to a moment"glance of Love from the Living Master? It i auplifting; it plants us even more firmly in theLove of Kirpal. Our Beloved Master would oftensay, "If you love me keep my commandmen :"111e inspiration that we receive in Master Dar-shan's company to redouble our spiritual z aland hie on with Maharaj Ji's commandments itruly the endless blessing of the Path of theMasters.Ed. I Have Come To Dance To Your TuneSant Darshan Singh Ii

This talk was given to visiting disciples in March, 1976 at Hauz Khas Park, Delhi, India

I have come to dance to your tune. Havingbeen an artist myself I know the delicacy ofthis matter. All artists, whether they are poets, painters or musicians, are very sensitive and oneway they get satisfaction from their artistictalent is that they make other people dance totheir tune. So today I am entirely at the disposalof my brothers and sisters, particularly myAuntie (an elder German Satsangi). You know, one thing I learned at the feet of the Master isto always respect the aged, and whenever I seemy Auntie, I remember Him. And my other ob-ject of respect is due to the fact that they arefull of love for the Beloved Master Sant KirpalSingh Ji. So it is out of respect for their greatdevotion for the Great Master that I bow downto them.

I have not had much time to get out intothe parks. And I think since our Beloved Mastermerged Himself in the Oversoul, the first timethat I was taken out to a public park was whenSister Ruth Seader came here (February, 1976)and the second time has come today as myAuntie and Sister Ruth Seader's son have, withthe bonds of love, dragged me to this place.

engineering group. When my results were out myRespected Father, whom I now address as theBeloved Master, took me to Hazur Maharaj BabaSawan Singh Ji. When we arrived He was sittingin His chair: an armchair with a slanting paddedback. He had long legs which He would stretchout and He was just resting. When we greetedthe Master I put my forehead on His lotus feet,as did our Beloved Master. Then Our BelovedMaster told Hazur that my results had been outand that I had secured high marks. HazurMaharaj Ji was very happy and gracious; He justpatted me on the back, "You have done excel-lant work." I was about to speak of my wish tostudy engineering or medicine, when Hazursaid to me. "Kaka" (Kaka means a boy, and thisis how He u ed to lovingly address me), "Persianis a very weet language and you must learn it."You know, even after listening to these words Iwas about to speak out on my preference forscience topics. But then our Gracious Father putHis hand on His lips to show me I was to keepquiet. That is how the selection of my subjectswas made. and that was the beginning of how Itook up poetry. After taking up Persian in myintermediate courses, Persian and Urdu becamemy best subjects following English and History.I think it was during this time that the BelovedMaster was writing the magnum-opus, the Gur-mat Sidhant (also known in English as The Phi-losophy of the Masters). He assigned to m~ theseiection of the verses on the vanous subjectsthat He was writing on. So every second or thirdday He would give me the subject; for instanceLove, Separation from God, Word or aam,Simran, Remembrance of God, Death in Life, .and other subjects which He was writing for theGurmat Sidhant. He would give me these sub-jects and ask me to collect quotations on themfrom the various mystic Persian poets. So I hadto run to the libraries, scan through the variousvolumes, and find the quotations. That is howthe Master first made me go through all thePersian mystic literature. That gave me someinsight into the principles of mysticism and ofSant Mat. That was very helpful for me laterwhen I started to write poetry.

(Someone asks the Master to speak onhow He became a poet)

I must tell you so far as that is concerned, poetry is a gift of the Beloved Master. It isspontaneous and it comes by intuition. It isalways in the form of a revelation and so far asmy poetry is concerned, I don't claim to be itswriter. Actually, I have been doing only steno-graphic work. The Beloved Master has been verygracious and He has been dictating - I have onlybeen transcribing His dictations, and that is thestory of my poetry.

I think the seeds of my poetry were sownin the year 1937 when I passed my matricula-tion examination. At that time I secured 630marks out of 850 which came to about 75%. Itwas quite a high score considering the difficultevaluation that was in vogue at that time. Sowith this high grade I could easily go in for anysubject for a career. I wanted to go in for sciencesubjects, either for the medical group or the

While in the park, Beloved Master Darshan Singh answers questions about His life with the Great Masters.

In my first year in college I started writingsome love poems, love-lyrics. It was in 1938,just a few days before Hazur 's birthday, whenour Beloved Father came to my room. He waslooking through my papers when He found alove-lyric which I had written. He said, "Oh , youhave started writing these things? All right, Iwillgive you one .hemistitch and you write a poemfor the. forthcoming Birthday Anniversary forHazur Baba Sawan Singh Ji." The hemistitchwas:

"Why do you worry? You continue and theMaster will help you." With His Grace Iwas able'to complete it and I submitted it to my BelovedFather for correction. He made some slight cor-rections and then He asked me to go ahead withit and recite it at Hazur's birthday celebrations. When I came to recite it I probably got thegreatest ovation of my life. Each verse was ap-plauded, and one thing which I can never forgetis that two of the verses even Hazur Maharaj J iasked me to repeat. In India, the greatest formof appreciation comes when a poet is asked torepeat some of His verses. The Great Ma tercontinuously looked into my eyes, and tho elife-inspiring glances of His I can never forgebecause I believe that they have sustained mypoetry throughout, and they are still sustain' =my poetry and myself also. Sometime I ie Ithat even if I were to write on the same he "-stitch today I probably could not improve 0it.

Much of the beauty of a poem i 10 t wheit is translated, but just to give you ome fla 0of it, I will render it in English:

The Light of God has manifested itself inthe form of the Resplendent GloriousMaster.

When the Master told me to write a poemon Hazur's birthday, you know, I had just start-ed poetry. Imust tell you I sweated from headto foot. I was just 17 years old. In coIJege Iused to read the sonnets and the lyrics, and Iwas just writing in the same vein some love po-etry. But to write on your Beloved Lord andMaster and to make a fully fledged poem of it!Well, I told my Father that this is a task pro-bably not possible of my acheivement. He said,

Resplendent Glorious Master

The Light of God has manifested itself in the form of the Resplendent GloriousMaster. He is the mirror which reflects the Eternal Creator.

What a wonder! God speaks through the human form. How strange! Even then Hemoves about unperceived unless He initiates mortals into the Mysteries of the Universebeyond.

o beauty embodied and Grace personified, whosoever casts a glance at Thy radiantform, becomes self-oblivious and loses himself in trance. He would fain lay himself as asacrifice at Thine divine altar.

Thy fame has spread over hills and dales, oceans and continents, this transitoryworld and the world beyond. All lips sing of Thy benevolence, every heart bears the sealof Thy Universal Love.

o seekers of communion with the Creator, come and behold the Universal Masterbecause He has consciously merged Himself in God and become one with Him.

The glory and grace of my Master manifest themselves in eJery direction. My heart isinebriate with His Love. I see His effulgent smiling face in e~er)" atom.

It is our short-sightedness to think that the sphere over which His tresses * sway islimited. In fact the sphere which His tresses engulf and enliven is unlimited.

"Word has been made flesh and dwells amongst liS. " Although His glimpses canoften be seen in this ephemeral world, yet in reality that Paragon of Beauty is alwaysenthroned in the highest heavenly abode.

If the unseen God be the Captain of the ship of life, let Him be. The Captain ofmy ship of life is my Beloved Master - 'SA WAN'. This is sufficient for me.

o Nectar of Immortality, how can a mortal do justice to Thy praise? Thou art thesolver of all problems. Thou art the liberator of mankind from the cycle of births anddeaths. 0 perennial source of bliss, Thou hast brought 'us in touch with the revitalizingWord - the sound current - which rings through eternity, upholds the Universe andvibrates in every heart.

I need only a life-inspiring glance of Thine, 0 Master! Thy divine touch is a panaceafor all my sorrows and afflictions,

I pray to Thee, 0 Universal Cup-bearer, to bestow a draught of Thy divine vintageon destitute Darshan, lying prostrate at Thy threshold.

* In mysticism, tresses is a symbol for spiritual influence

"Resplendent Glorious Master" was written by Sant Darshan Singh Ji at the request ofBeloved Master Kirpal Singh for the occasion of Hazur Baba Sawan Singh's Birthday An-niversary. (See "I have Come to Dance to Your Tune" p. 12 for the story related to thepoem.)

(Someone asks the Master to speak on theLove that we receive from the Master andalso on how He received Naam Initiationfrom Baba Sawan Singh Ji)

Brother, you have struck a very sensitivecord by asking me to relate some instances fromthe caravan of sweet memories which are con-nected with the two Great Masters who are myvery life.

As a child I probably had the best possiblefortune of being brought up in an atmospherecharged with spirituality, charged with bliss, charged with tranquility. I would often see myfather sitting in meditation in the evening, thenwhen I went to sleep, and then again when Igot up in the morning I found Him in medita-tion. I always found a large number of peoplecoming to Him for peace and solace. And thenagain, my mother would also sit in meditation.

From my earliest years I had an urge that Ialso should follow in their footsteps. In duecourse I came to understand that my RespectedFather and my mother had been initiated byHazur Maharaj Ji. So once when I accompaniedthem to Beas, I went to Hazur Maharaj Ji and Iasked, "Would You kindly give me laarn?" Imust have been about six years old at that time.Maharaj Ji called for a packet of sweets whichHe gave me, patted me on the back, and pushedme off saying, "It is all right." So I was momen-tarily satisfied with it. I came back home to findout that something I wanted was still lackingalthough all of the sweets were eaten up.

So I went back again to Him and I madethis same request and He put me off the sameway, probably this time with a better type ofsweets! But when I came back home I againrealized that something very important was miss-ing, and I made a firm resolution that I was notgoing to be brushed aside like on the two pre-vious occasions. So I went again with firm re-solution to Hazur Maharaj Ji. I said, "Kindlygive me the Naam initiation which You havegiven to my father." He just looked into myeyes and said, "Do you really want that initia-tion I have given to your father?" I said, "De-finately Sir - I don't want the sweets!" Hesaid I should come back in the evening. In theevening I went to His room. He was sitting inHis armchair. He asked me to sit in bhajanposture. I had no difficulty because I had seenmy father sitting in that posture. Then the with-drawal started and I saw stars inside and then Isaw the Lights. Eventually Gracious Hazur saidthis was sufficient for the time being. I boweddown at His feet and I came out. I was so fullof joy. my joy knew no bounds. I rushed out ofHazur's room, I rushed out of Hazur's bungalow, and ran to find my Father. I saw Him comingfrom a distance, and I cried out, "Father, Father,

how far have you got in initiation? I have got itup to the stars." The Beloved Master wouldoften relate this incident in His discourses hereas well as abroad.

(Someone then asks the Master to tellsomething about His early career days.)First I would like to emphasize one point,

and that is, my Respected Father, the BelovedMaster, was the most affectionate father. How-ever, He was a strict disciplinarian and an ex-tremely hard task-master. During my early daysas a child. and then during my studentship, Iused to love Him the most. I can say that I havenot loved anyone else one tenth as much as Ihave loved Him all through my life. That some-how or the other was ingrained in me. So fromthe very start I would do my level best to pleaseHim. While at home I would attend to all Hisneeds to the minutest degree. He was very fondof pump water. (We had a regular pipeline also.)Whenever He wanted to drink a cup of water Iwould pump up four buckets and then give Himone cup, because in summer that would be coldand in winter it would be warm. Similarly, if Hehad to take a bath I would take out four bucketsand then I would keep two buckets aside forHim. He u ed to go to His office on a cycle. Iwould clean the cycle every morning and even-ing. Whereas my own cycle was concerned, thatwould be cleaned only when it got punctured orsomething got broken, and then the cyclevendor would clean it and fix it. I would neverdo it. But I would keep my Beloved Father'scycle very clean. I would attend to all His otherneeds, including one which I can remember now- that of getting curd (yogurt) from the market. My Respected Father was very fond of curd; Hedid not take much milk. At that time I was astudent and I was studying in the premier in-stitution of my province; the Government Col-lege of Lahore. Admission and studies were verydifficult and this made it hard for me to havetime to go to the bazaar to get the curd in theway I had to get it. I would just go to the shop-keeper and ask Him to show me a sample. Hewould place it on a leaf for me to taste, and Iwould be able to see whether it was sweet orsour. If it was sour, I would leave it and go on tothe other shops. Sometimes in this process Iwould have to go to asmany as four shops be-fore finding the sweet curd that He would like. And then on finding it I would bring it to Him.Whatever I did, I did my best, but He wouldseldom pay me a compliment! And in the sameway I was a very good student. If I stood first inall the five subjects, He would give me a pat onthe back. If I stood first in four of my subjectsand somehow or the other slipped down in thefifth subject, He would sometimes throwawaymy report. He would say, "I am not prepared to

Page 17: Satsandesh Apr May 1976

Mar. - Apr. 1976 RUHANI NEWSLETTER Page 17

sign it!" Then I would have to entreat Him toget His signature, and give Him promises thatnext time I would do my best to stand first inall the subjects. Only then would He sign it so Icould return it to College. So one day in amood, I said, "Respected Father, it is very diffi-cult to please you." I later forgot all about thismild complaint on my part.

I started my career in the Government ofIndia in 1942 and was married in the followingyear. Immediately after my marriage I had togo to Bombay in connection with awardingcontracts for thousands of dollars. So I sentback my wife to my Father in Lahore and fromDelhi I proceeded to Bombay. There were lots

of temptations in the form of bribes to win thecontracts, and lots of money was offered, Itwas with Master's Grace I did not succumb toany of them. I did the best of my duty to thebest of my ability and most honestly. Whilewriting about my Bombay tour I related thisalso to my Father. I was beside myself with joywhen I got His reply. He had written thissentence: "By your conduct you have pleasedthe God in you and your Father who one dayyou said was very difficult to please. " I had for-gotten this remark made some time ago. How-ever, our Beloved Master remembered it and Herepeated it in that letter.

INITIATION AT LAST!Robert Gambee

All my life I have found myself taking thetraditional conservative path of my elders. ThatI was the second oldest in a recent group ofinitiates (initiated in India by Master DarshanSingh Ji) was no surprise to me. What were un-expected were the numerous "lessons" I was putthrough once I arrived in India including justadapting to the lifestyle there. I can see thistransition was necessary for me to make in orderto shed many vestiges of my life as a Wall Streetinvestment banker. I had been raised by lovingparents in a high-class and worldly environmentwhich was lacking in spiritual influence. I hadtasted the bitter sweet success of the rising stockmarket in the late 1960's when bonuses totalingmore than one's annual salary were common. But fortunately I soon realized that this was un-satisfying, and by the time I was stumbling ontothe true Path I was quite ready for it.

This past Christmas as my friends weresailing the Grenadines or spending a week withtheir families at Jackson Hole, I took a week offfor meditation and spiritual development. Istayed in my apartment reading the New Testa-ment for the first time and Master Kirpal Singh'sbooks for the second or third time. It was lateone evening that I read in Naam that only aLiving Master could introduce one to Amrit, the pool of nectar that could wash off all sinsand karmas. I knew Master Kirpal Singh was nolonger in this world and was therefore plungedinto great despair. Indeed, what was one to donow? I fumbled through the end of the book

and found the names of certain U.S. representa-tives. Not knowing Adam from Eve, I selecteda Mr. Khanna. Reaching him late at night Iexplained my plight and in an exuberant para-graph (not just a sentence) he told me thatthere was indeed a living Master, that I shouldgo and see for myself and to also contact thehead of the New York Satsang right away.

I did contact the latter person, saw him thefollowing day and sent off a telegram to Indiarequesting permission to visit soon thereafter. My plans took shape rapidly and I developed asensation inside that if I couldn't go immediate-ly I would simply explode! Fortunately I wasable togo quickly.

The Master gave me initiation right afterthe Bhandara during the end 0 f August 1975.This was an extraordinary experience. TheMaster put me in contact with the Light andSound within!

Some day I hope to be able to steer a fewof my investment banking partners towards thilovely path or, rather, I should hope the Ma terwould draw them to Him and I could serve asome point of reference. Until then I shall enjoyinternal growth which must come first and afeeling of extreme happiness and thanks to Goand His Masters for making the real \ ay avail-able to me. The alternatives I had been pre ent-ed with were great but none were great enoughto give me the kind of permanent satisfactionthat I now receive with the Master's grace.

Self-RealizationBaba Sawan Singh Jt

Translation of a Satsang Discourse delivered March, 1947

This world is full of darkness,This world is full of ignorance.

The Saints who have reached the SupremeAbode, and who have become one with Him,look at our condition (of suffering humanity)and exclaim, "Alas, the whole world is imprison-ed in a dark cell." That is to say, it has beendropped into a dark well (thrown in a ditch as itwere). We have no knowledge of the Bliss andPeace ruling in the Supreme Abode; on the con-trary we look for pleasures and (short lived)peace of mind in this world, which knows notthe real Bliss and real Peace of the Soul or Spirit.

Therefore, the Saints point out, the wholeworld is in the dark. If we ask them, "How is itin the dark, when the light of the sun isthere?" They reply, "Examine it carefully."And when we examine the subject carefully, wefind that the whole world can be divided intotwo classes: One is Jal (water-ocean) and theother is Thal (solid-land). There is the oceanwith the creatures living in water, and there isthe land with creatures living on it.

Then -the Saints ask us to consider deeply, and to tell them what food the water animalslive upon. Living beings live upon living beings!

The bigger fish lives upon the smaller fish;the smaller fish lives upon the still smaller one. They have no baked bread there, nor grass tolive upon. Now come to the land - there thetiger lives upon the fox or the wolf. The foxand wolf live upon the sheep or the goat, where-as the sheep and goat live upon the plants (evenplants are living). The hawk lives upon the spar-row, and the sparrow lives upon the insects. Each food-grain is living. Just imagine thenum ber of living beings we are devouring daily.

Guru Nanak supports the same truth, thateach grain is a living being: "Among all thegrains of food, not a grain is without life." Notonly this - if you examine through a micro-scope the water we drink daily, millions of livingbeings become visible. The scientists have in-vented a microscope which enlarges the size ofa tiny germ to 2500 times its normal size. Thewhole universe is full of living beings. When webreathe, we are killing living beings. When weattend to the calls of nature, we kill living beings. While we walk we kill living beings by collisionWhether we consider it or not, everywhere inthe Universe, living beings live upon living beings.

Everyone is going towards the court of the DivineJudze to be tried for the sins of killing these

t:> ,

living beings. Now, tell me, where one being lives upon

the death of another, can there be peace? Ifthere is a way to Salvation here, it is throughhuman life only. If it is possible for one toleave this prison, it is only in the human life. But we are all ignorant. We are wasting thevery same life for nothing. In this connectionI shall relate a story to you:. A king saw in a dream that he was goingthrough a forest. While going through it hesaw that a tiger was coming from the oppositedirection. He was horrified to see it and thought, what to do? To be safe, he climbed a tree. Hethen looked around and saw that a white and ablack rat were cutting the branch off the tree. Now, he thought, if he fell down, on what sortof soil would he land? On looking below hesaw a big dragon with her mouth wide open toreceive him. He was greatly terrified. Acci-dently there was a beehive above him, from whichhoney was dropping down, due to the high tem-perature of the season. These honey drops cameinto his mouth, and when he tasted the honey,he forgot the tiger, the white and black rats, andeven the dragon with her mouth open. All of asudden, as he was enjoying the honey, the branchwas cut off and he fell into the open mouth ofthe dragon below.

It is a story which alludes that Maya or Kalis the tiger, our life on this earth is the branch, and day and night are the white and black ratswhich are cutting the branch of life. The daythat is passed today shall never be returned. Thedragon in the story is death, in the aspect of Kalas the Divine Judge, who is ready to devour us.What is the honey of the story? Worldly enjoy-ments. In the lure of these we forget Kal or theDivine Judge. This is our ignorance.

Do we sincerely remember that we have todie? On the contrary we say, "Sweet is thisworld - who has seen the other?" We havecome in to the world blind and we go away blind. Therefore, Saints say, the whole world is in utterdarkness. Living beings are destroying eachother. One religion is the enemy of the otherreligion.

This is all outer darkness. When we closeour eyes, we face inner darkness (spiritual ig-norance). Our waking or sleeping consciousness

is all a mazy existence. A maze is a house fromwhich one does not find one's way out, if everentered. Mogul Emperors built these mazes inIndia during their reign. These are earthly mazes- but the Great Maze of eighty-four thousandkinds of lives is the real labyrinth (in which thesouls are entrapped). We are at one time amonginsects and another time among birds; sometimeswe are cats and sometimes dogs; sometimesplants and sometimes among other kinds of life.Guru Arjan (The Fifth Sikh Guru) says,

" Several lives of moths and insects one lives,Several lives of fish, elephant and deer,Several lives of birds and snakes one lives,Several lives of horses and trees, 0, dear."

"After ages this human life has been given,a golden chance to realize Him within."

The mind does not allow the soul to enterthe regions within. The same thing is told byLord Krishna (the Hindu prophet) to Udho:"This insect crawling in the drain, was severaltimes Inder, the King of Paradise, and severaltimes Brahma, the Creator of the PhysicalWorlds."

You can read it in the Bhagwat (Gita). You can now consider that if such great gods,(as Inder and Brahma) could be returned to in-

sects, how can we be saved from such a result?Let us study it. Do not insects and moths, thedoves or the crows have offspring? We comeacross them in every life. But Naam (initiationand Music Divine) is available in human lifeonly. Some people think that they will get ini-tiated in their old age. But in old age one can-not do Bhajan (as easily).

Swami Ji tells us, whether we are waking orsleeping, we live within a maze, because we dothe same things while sleeping as we had beendoing while waking.

This poor soul in this strange landForgetting her own dear Home-land.

The Home of the soul is Sach Khand (theFifth Region). There, there is neither birth nordeath. There is Peace and Peace alone. It is avery pure and most refined region. It is thesphere of pure bliss. The soul is a drop from theOcean of Spirit, Sat Naam. Saints call each oneof us to wake up.

Advice To New Seekers After TruthSant Darshan Singh Ji

Firs t of all, J wouldn't call any thing which J give out "instruc-tions". J would Simply call it only advice. My advice to my brothersand sisters who are seekers after Truth is threefold:

Firstly, they should read the various books written by our BelovedMaster because they contain the quintessence of all that which has beenstated in the previous scrip tures and we are most lucky to have thenzwith us.

Secondly, they should observe chastity: chastity in thought, \- ordand deed.

Thirdly, they should observe a strict vegetarian diet and attend tlzevarious Satsangs held by our group leaders where either recorded talksof our Beloved Master are 'played or certain portions of His books areread. These things will prepare the ground and after that they can beput on the Path.

Raji Weds RitaThe marriage of Master Darshan Singh Ji's son, Rajinder Singh Duggal, with Rita, daughter of the late SarsarGian Singh Ji Sachdev on April 30, 1976 is reported here by Kate Tillis. The marriage ceremony was con-ducted in Delhi according to the Sikh tradition.

Twelve years ago, Sant Kirpal Singh Ji,when arrangements were being made for a fami-ly wedding, suggested that it should be kept assimple as possible, that the bride should notbring a dowry, and that gifts of money shouldnot be given during the ceremony as is custom-ary in India. His suggestions at that time werenot accepted by His relations, but He remarked,"You will see that at Raji's wedding my wisheswill be carried out." And so it has proved to be.

Master Darshan Singh's elder son Raji hasbeen in the United States of America for thelast seven and a half years; he had a brilliantcareer at Illinois Institute of Technology wherehis exam results were so outstanding that theDean wrote to congratulate his parents. OnMarch 9th he returned to visit his very lovingfamily, and to take back with him his Indianbride. As things turned out both parents andson were perfectly agreed upon the girl whosefortunate and blessed destiny it is to be mar-

ried into the Master's family. Rita is a girl ofoutstanding beauty in the classic Indian tradi-tion, and is a person of friendly charm. Lastyear she took her Bachelor's Degree; this yearshe has been studying Home Management. Herown talents, together with those of her husband, will surely be of great service in the Master'sHoly Cause in the West, by His Grace.

Sant Darshan Singh Ji made it very clearfrom the beginning that He would not allowa dowry to be given, and that there were tobe no presents. Instead of the usual sumptuousmarriage dinner only soft drinks were to beserved to the guests. The bride's family werewilling to make arrangements for up to fivehundred guests at their place of residence, butthe Master replied that as the whole Sangat wasdear to Him an open invitation should be issued, and it would be better for the wedding to beheld at the big Gurdwara (Sikh Temple) as theremight be as many as five thousand guests.

. The wedding was arranged for Friday,April 30th, but the ceremonies started on theprevious Monday and continued all week. OnMonday evening there was a service of the sino-ing of kirtans (sacred songs) at the Master'shome in which the women participated. Thevisiting Westerners were invited to attend thisservice, as they were invited to attend all thevarious ceremonies, for which they felt mostgrateful and privileged.

At an early hour on the Wednesday morn-ing the bride's family gathered at Kirpal Bhavan(Mona' Cottage) for the engagement breakfast;they brought the traditional presents of fruitand sweets. This was an opportunity for bothfamilies to meet and talk together, and it wasa most happy occasion. The large photographsof the Beloved Master, Sant Kirpal Sinzh Jib ,

appeared to be showering down His blessinzs onthe gathering. In keeping with Indian cu~tomhowever, the bride herself did not appear - in-deed in former times the bride and groom wouldnot meet until the actual marriage ceremony, but now-a-days they do meet beforehand inthe presence of their families. After the engage-ment breakfast was over, the Master anointedRaji's forehead with saffron, and everyone of-fered congratulations and good wishes. The same afternoon the bridegroom's familyvisited the bride's home bringing with them riceand sugar; this was then cooked into a sweet ricedish and was fed in spoonfuls to the bride andgroom as they sat together on a sofa - thespoonfuls were put into their mouths by rela-tives and friends, and this signified that fromnow on she would be eating the food of herhusband's family. It was really a day for theladies, but some men were present, and theGracious Master was also there to bless us withHis benign presence. It was the first time we hadseen the bride, and we were much struck by herbeauty - traditionally the bride keeps her facehalf covered and her eyes cast down, the pictureof modesty! The bride and groom exchangedrings; many people then gave them small tokengifts of money which were to go to the poor.

That evening carpets were laid over the flatroof of the Master's house, and family membersarid close friends crowded up there to sit underthe night sky and listen to sacred chanting andto the traditional Punjabi wedding songs, someof them very moving, and some full of humor. The climax of the evening was Raji's song andthe Master's reading of a poem which althoughmaking the use of worldly images, is an out-burst of the true love experienced when the soulmeets the Beloved, the Master. Here is a freerendering in English as given by Master DarshanHimself of three verses:

I could neither find smiles in flowersnor light in the stars. Until I met 'you I could not find happiness inanything.Neither in the moon, nor in the twilizht

. . b ,

neither 111 the roses, nor in the tulips, the attraction which you have,I could not find anywhere. That which could move my restless heart,o Darshan, That I could not get from themusic of any instrument. This intimate night-long session (it was so

moving to see the Master surrounded by Hisfamily and relatives) was repeated the followinznight. But on this occasion it was preceeded byRaji's hands being covered with thick layers ofhenna paste (we all contributed a dab) which hethen pressed against the wall behind his headleaving a clear imprint. At the same time thi~ceremony was being held at the bride's homeand it symbolizes the colorful life all wish thecouple to live. Again Raji sang a song, and againthe Master recited some of His beautiful poems.

The Wedding Ceremony took place on theFriday morning at the Gurdwara at GreaterKailash. This Gurdwara stands on a hill sur-rounded by plenty of open space where color-ful canopies had been erected. The Sangat, ashad been ex pected , turned ou tin full forceeveryone beaming with happiness. Some of thewomen wore saris of outstanding elegance andbeauty. 1t was a hot and brilliantly sunny day.FIrst of all the Sehra Bandi ceremony tookplace: this is the tying of the Sehra - a crownwith hanging gold strands and flowers - whichentirely covers the groom's face and is zenerallvtied by the groom's sisters or 'cousins~ But onthis occasion this was done by the Master inthe blessed name of the two Great Master _~azur' Baba Sawall Singh Ji and Sant KirpalSingh 1I at Whose Gracious Lotus Feet He hadthe good fortune. to have sat all His life. In this Sikh ceremony human marriage isseen as a preparation for spiritual marriage. Af-ter the actual ceremony was over, the traditionalpoem composed for the occasion (it is also call-ed a Sehra or tribute, a garland of words) wasread in Urdu. Then the Master's childhoodfriend, Gurbaksh Singh Randhir, who had readthe Sehra at Master Darshan Singh's wedding in1941, spoke on the spiritual aspect of marriage;he addressed much of his talk to Rita, telling herthat she had no need to look to Sita (the wife ofLord Rama) as an example of perfect wifelydevotion as she now had two examples in her

own family, that of Master Darshan's motherand His dear wife. This was followed by amember of the Gurdwara Committee who of-fered his congratulations. The Master's dearwife, Harbhajan, then sang a sacred bhajan, andthe Master read some of His inspired verses. This was followed by the garlanding of thehappy couple, and the distribution of Parshad.

So ended a momentous occasion for allof us. The ever gracious presence of the Be-loved Master Kirpal Singh Ji was not only feltbut actually seen by many. TI1is was an idealmarriage in simplicity and dignity: there was nodowry, no sumptuous meals, no dancing, no pre-sents. It will undoubtedly create a precedent, amost welcome precedent for future Satsangimarriages. Sant Kirpal Singh J i's twelve-year oldprediction has come true, and we all wish thenewly-married pair every happiness and thecontinued blessings from the Gracious Masterforever!

IN HIS RADIANT PRESENCEJulie Scotti

. I came to India to seek guidance from SantDarshan Singh, who I thought might be MasterKirpal Singh's successor. Since our Master'sphysical departure I had experienced some con-fusion about the Path and greatly needed thehelp of the Living Master.

In Sant Darshan Singh I have found all wecould need in a Perfect Successor to our BelovedKirpal. First and foremost He is capable of put-ting true seekers on the way back to God byconnecting them with the inner Light andSound. Those with more background have seenthe radiant forms of the Masters within. Duringmy stay in India He has initiated both Indiansand Westerners. I have talked with the newinitiates who, with His permission, have testifiedto His absolute competence.

Second, and to Master Kirpal's initiatesvery important, He is able to give previous init-iates clear and patient guidance on the detailsof the Spiritual Path in complete accordancewith the Holy Teachings of our own Master, andwith such a spiritual radiation that understand-ing easily comes to the mind in His presence.

Thirdly, He is the living embodiment ofselfless service, sacrifice, and loving humility, aswas our Master Kirpal. Like our Beloved, Heworks ceaselessly, taking little rest, never refus-

ing to see a true seeker. No question is too mun-dane or in ignificant if it bothers us. He lovinglyand so patiently tends to those in His care. Heasks our permission to leave us to attend tomore work! Such is His humility.

The fourth and for me the sweetest thingabout coming to Sant Darshan Singh is that inHis Presence our aching hearts which long for aglimpse of our Master Kirpal receive someconsolation, being washed in those sweet wavesof Love and Divine Grace that we knew at theFeet of our Lord. No other one can assuagethat yearning, for Kirpal will always be the onlyOne for His disciples. But seeing and feeling Himworking through this humble channel of Love, new hope has dawned in me; knowing He is stillwith us, working as ever for our upliftment, guiding us accurately and constantly. I havebeen inspired to renew my efforts to reach myBeloved within, and my heart has been replen-ished with Love that again flows from my eyesas it did when I was with my Master.

What more could we need in a successor?Whatever others may claim to offer by way ofsuccessorship is of little interest to me; I haveseen Master's Perfect Successor in Sant DarshanSingh and gratefully received all the help andLove I could have hoped for, and more.

The Lord of CompassionSant Darshan Singh Ii

Sant Kirpal Singh Ji

This talk was given by Sant Darshan Singh Ji inEnglish to visiting Westerners at Mona's Cottageon October 10th 1975

The greatest thing one can ask the Masterfor is initiation. This you have got already. TheBeloved Master used to say, "From the Masteryou should ask for nothing but the Master, because the Master is the embodiment of allvirtues." This includes humility, receptivity, unbounded love, your complete surrender and HisGrace : this means the power to live up to Histeachings and obey His commandments. .

The Master used to tell a very beautifulstory: In India we used to have a weekly marketat which different kinds of things would be sold.

Once there was a king who arranged such amarket, but the things were all free. He told hissubjects they might walk through the marketand each person might choose one thing - what-ever he touched would be his to take away. Atthe beginning of the market were things of littlevalue, then there were more valuable things, andfinally there were jewels and gold. In the verylast room the king himself was sitting. One girlwalked right through the whole market, and inthe last room she went up to the king andtouched him. So the king married her - thenshe had everything!

In the same way we should not ask foranything from the Master but the Master be-cause, you know, humility, receptivity, love, initiation and inner progress - these are thevarious attributes of this Great Entity. Soif you ask the Master for nothing else but theMaster, everything else shall be added unto you.

From my very early childhood I've been atthe Feet of the Master. In our house we wouldnot get our meals unless we had put in time formeditation in the morning and the evening. That was the Master's discipline. At an early ageI went to Great Master Baba Sawan Singh Ji withthe Beloved Master; I accompanied Him manytimes to Satsang. Hazur took me to the stars:at such an early age He gave me a boost to thatplace. And later on, when I was a student I ain meditation. When you went to the GreaMaster one of the questions He immedia elyasked you was about meditation. So if anyo ewent to the Master he had of necessity to domeditation, and quite a lot of it.

In my life Master has always comeThis is what is known to all my offi -comes through in all my official dealingthrough all my literary work, my mys - oeand whatever other work I have done -field of literature I have done dire }the instructions of the Master. \ ha einstructions were I followed them aand they included regular medifrom my childhood.

The Beloved Master was the Lord of Com-passion. He was so full of compassion, the re-sult was that He took on karmas from all of usand He had to endure much physical suffering. The same thing happened with Hazur also.

Page 24: Satsandesh Apr May 1976

RUHANI NEWSLETTER Mar. - Apr. 1976

Most of us saw the Beloved Master onlyon the dais, we had His darshan from the dais, and I am telling you, howsoever much physicalsuffering He had, He could go above body con-sciousness at will. So whatever the suffering, when He wanted to, He could withdraw frombody consciousness; He would deliver a dis-course for three hours, and nobody in the au-dience would feel He was suffering.

He has related in one of His talks howonce He was having a very high temperature. But He had instructions from Hazur during Hisearly days that if He could even move from thebed He must go and do His duty at Satsang. Hewas very sick. He got up but could hardly move. Then, you know, He walked by taking the sup-port of the wall for a few steps. He was walkingfor some time, then sitting down, then walking -He went to the Satsang like this. He gave a verylong Satsang - probably one and a half timesthe normal time - and when He came back Hewas quite well again!

These great Personalities can withdraw; butthere are certain laws of nature. When out ofTheir compassion They take on our karmas,They have to suffer physically. They don't haveany karmas of Themselves because the questionof Their karmas does not arise. It is out of Theircompassion that They take our karmas and re-lieve us of our pain. And that is why we findthem sometimes seemingly suffering like that.It was probably out of His compassion for usthat most of us were unaware of His suffering. He knew that no disciple could bear to see theMaster suffer. To see your child suffering, tosee your wife suffering, to see your earthly fa-ther or mother suffering - you can't stand it.How can you stand to see God suffering in frontof you? If He concealed it in that way, it wasprobably His compassion for all of us; He knewthat none of us could stand it, and He wantedto spare us.

Each Master has His own qualities, and ourMaster had the quality of compassion. But thereare certain laws of nature. Our Beloved Masteralways said that nature is like a business man -the moment you transgress the rules and regula-tions of nature it presents the bill. If you wantto describe spirituality in one word, that word isLove. It is Love, and if you want to expand it,then it is the entire creation, including God: thatLove is there. Master is Love's embodiment andbeing of the same essence as God, He is also Love.So Masters come here and take us back, onlythrough that process. Otherwise, the Masterscan very easily perform a few miracles here, anda few miracles there; but this is not the law --as a matter of fact, all Saints have suffered mostterribly. If you want to know about Love, thenlook at the lives of those who have actually diedfrom Love. You can think of Christ who went

to the cross praying that God might forgive Hispersecutors because they knew not what theywere doing. You can think of Mira Bai whotook a cup of poison as if it was nectar. Or GuruArjan who was seated on a burning plate, andthen burning hot sand was put on his head; Hewent on saying, "Sweet is Thy will." So theyhave all suffered. They are the Lords of Com-passion. In the case of our Master, if He wentto see a sick man, that man would get well.He was such a Lord of Compassion, the worldwould seldom see the like of it.

But our Master was also a very strict dis-ciplinarian. If He would tell vou to do some-thing, He'd make sure that you did it with fullzeal - there was no question of your not doingit. Similar was the case in meditation. He wasvery particular, and normally I would do thingsin the best possible manner, which I thoughtdeserved some appreciation - but He wouldtake them as if they were expected to be donein that way. One day I expressed my feelingsto Him. He replied, "You should do thingsmuch above the normal standards, because Iexpect much more from you than from thenormal man." I tell you these small incidentsto let you know what a great disciplinarian Hewas, and how He was guiding us, and how Hewas ensuring that meditation and day to day be-havior should be properly put into practice.

Early in my Government Service I wentone day to the Ashram and He took me aside. So many people were there, and when Mastertook you a ide you would naturally sweat fromhead to toes, and that is what happened. Heasked me, "Darshi, how much are you contribut-ing to the Satsang?" "Sir, I'm giving fifteenrupees per month, except for the Bhandaras."On these occasions I'd give a hundred or twohundred rupees. He said, "That's all right,Bhandaras are quite a separate affair, but some-times you also take your meals here, and as suchyou may increase your monthly contributionsto twenty five rupees." I'm just telling you howHe guided us and how He put us on the rightpath.

I have been saying repeatedly that all thatis going on now is Master's' work; no human be-ing can do it and no human being can stop it.It is His work, He does it. You would be sur-prised, last winter under the Master's instruc-tions I was keeping aloof, I did not even go toSatsang. Yet some twenty thousand peoplegathered at Tilak agar in February 1975 forthe Birthday Celebrations. Subsequently someforty thousand people gathered for the AprilBhandara. Who knew me? Everybody camefor the Master, it was the Master's love whichbrought them. People in America, people inAfrica, people in South America, and in Indiaalso, all the countries - they have not seen me.

Naturally when we all sit together the greatthing is that we always remember the Masterand we all live as brothers. I have been repeat-edly telling all my brothers and sisters that ourGuru, our Master, is that Luminous Personality, that God Incarnate Who initiated us. We are allbrothers and sisters in the Master. If the Masterwants to take some work out of me, it is all HisGrace. We are all brothers and sisters and ouronly purpose in getting together is that we reachinside at the Lotus Feet of the Radiant Form ofthe Master.

(A disciple said, "1 find I'm more like adog - the dog sometimes thinks he's smart butultimately only wants his master's pleasure.")

I am reminded of a couplet by Hafiz, thegreat Persian poet:

I have heard You are putting collars on thenecks of dogs.

You know, the significance of putting acollar on them is that otherwise they are stray

dogs. The moment you put a collar and a stringon it means you belong to your master; that isthe significance. Hafiz went on to ask:

Why don't you put that collar on the neckof Hafiz also?

We are grateful to Him that He has put Hiscollar on our necks; we are all His dogs - ifyou'll excuse the expression. And we are grate-ful to the Master Who has put a collar on ournecks, otherwise we'd be stray and uncared forpeople.

It is the Master Who finds the disciple, andthat great event in our lives has been accom-plished. We are most lucky that out of the en-tire world consisting of billions and trillions ofpeople, only a few have been chosen by Him,and luckily He has chosen us - not that wedeserve it. That is why we are lucky. We shouldnow try to cover the second stage which is to goabove body consciousness and to reach Him in-side.

Many of the most well kno vn mys ical poetsin. India qathered together to give out their poems on the love of God. Several Western disciples also readbeautiful poems on the subject.

INITIATION ON APRIL 3, 1976Maja Lazzari

When I came into the tent where initiationwas to take place, the beautiful way in which itwas arranged immediately caught my attention.Looking over the crowd of Indian seekers afterTruth gathered at Tilak Nagar one could seemany different age groups were represented.Everyone was seeking God - young a~d oldalike. They all were sitting patiently, silentlyawaiting the Master. It was almost two hoursbefore the Master came, but their longing was sogreat that it didn't seem to matter.

As the Master entered the tent there was acertain atmosphere that I cannot explain inwords. The Master humbly took His place on thedais and silently looked to His new children, giving His darshan to all and the whole tent w~soverflowing with love. We were all protected 111

a cloud of love. Then Master, like a Father, spoke to them very sweetly, very lovingly, giv-ing out in His quiet voice the instructions forinitiation. The love with which initiation instruc-tions were given to each and everyone gatheredwas incredibly moving.

Then the Master put everyone into medita-tion. Those of us who were previously initiatedand had been allowed to attend the initiationcould feel a wonderful link of love between theGodman and His disciples. It was a beautiful

feeling - something very special. The criterion of a Perfect Master according

to the teachings of Sant Mat is one who can givean experience of Light and Sound. Everyonepresent for initiation had a definite experiencewith the Master's Grace. Out of 125 brothersand 126 sisters initiated, 107 saw red Light; 129saw white Light; 69 saw blue sky; 15 saw stars;54 saw golden Light; 9 saw the moon and 73saw the Master's Radiant Form within. It was aspecial day of grace and receptivity.

At the end of initiation I looked to myMaster Sant Darshan Singh and rememberedmy own initiation a short time ago on March4th, 1976. I am an Italian and was initiated withone American brother, one German sister, andtwo Swiss sisters. I could not help but reflect onthat day when He had accepted me for initia-tion. As we all know, a Master takes on the kar-mas of His initiates, and I did not want myMaster to suffer for me. Now it was 251 morechildren He was accepting for initiation out ofHis merciful Love and Compassion and thethought struck me how this would only con-tinue to grow throughout His entire mission .

Thank You Master, for all Your love andGrace which You pour out to humanity.

o Son of God, Thy Holy FacePours into us children of God, Thy Grace.Constantly we await our meetingFace to face with Thy Lyrical Glances of greeting!Thy charged words like freshening showers descend:To the Sun of Thy Visage like flowers we bend;As we soak up this Rainfall, our souls do ascend!

Thousands of souls at Thy feet are inspiredTo feast on Godman, which placates all desires.Little by little He imparts us the LinkWith NAAM, that deep in our amazed souls doth sink.Till like new - lighted lamps they commence to wink.
