Arline Giedd AVON — Funeral services for Arline Giedd, 84, of Avon are 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 27, 2012 at the Trinity Pres- byterian Church in Avon. Burial is in the church ceme- tery, rural Avon. Visitation is Sunday from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel in Avon. Arline was born July 11, 1927 on the farm in rural Avon, SD, the daughter of Edward and Hulda (Frey) Vogel. She died Thursday, February 23, 2012 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Tyndall, SD. Arline attained the age of 84 years, seven months and 12 days. Arline received her education from the Vilhauer District 73 school and graduated from Avon High School in 1945. She contin- ued her education and received Nurse’s Training at Sacred Heart Hospital and Mount Marty Col- lege in Yankton, graduating in May of 1948. Arline was united in marriage to Wilmer Giedd at Yankton on November 1, 1948. To this union four children were born. Arline worked for a short time at the Tyndall Hospital. She worked at the Good Samaritan Center in Tyndall from 1970 to 1980. Arline was baptized and joined the Trinity Presbyterian Church on March 19, 1967, by Rev. Calvin Siemsen. Arline will be remembered for her love of watching her grand- children and great grandchildren grow up. She also enjoyed work- ing in her garden and raising flowers. Thankful for having shared her life are her husband, Wilmer Giedd of Avon; three children: Michael and wife Sharon Giedd of Avon; Tamara Jo and husband Harry Newhard of Tripp; and Kathleen Ann and husband David Wudel of Tripp; six grandchil- dren; 13 great grandchildren; sis- ter, Verlys Velma and husband Max Webb of Forges, France; brother, Harley E. Vogel of Las Vera Cruz, CA; and several nieces and nephews. Arline was preceded in death by her parents and infant daugh- ter, Kristie Kara Giedd, in 1965. Yankton Press & Dakotan February 25, 2012 Hearing For Man Accused Of Murder Reset From P&D Staff Reports The hearing scheduled for Monday in the case of a Yankton man charged with first-degree murder has been continued to the following week. According to the Yankton County State’s Attorney Office, a hearing for Nicholas Stewart Hines is now scheduled for 3:30 p.m. March 5 at the Yankton County Courthouse and Safety Center. Hines is accused of murdering 25-year-old Brianna Marie Knoll of Yankton last April. City To Consider Meridian Bridge Trail Design From P&D Staff Reports The Yankton City Commission will consider a design Monday for the trail near the Meridian Bridge. Commissioners had earlier asked for estimates on how much it would cost to stamp or color the concrete used for the trail. That in- formation will be presented Monday. Also that night, the commission will hear a request from youth baseball for $1,500 for its summer season, consider a request from NuStar Pipeline for easement agreements and hold a public hearing for a grant opportunity for the Regional Technical Education Center. Relay For Life Kickoff Event Is Tuesday The American Cancer Society Relay For Life® of the Yankton Area will officially get under way as event volunteers and participants gather at the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital Pavilion for a kickoff event to launch their fundraising efforts for the year. The event is set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28. The kickoff will share information about this year’s Relay For Life and how groups can register a team for the event scheduled for June 29-30 at Riverside Park. YMS Students Take Top Honors At Spelling Bee VERMILLION — Danielle Gillis, a Yankton Middle School student, cor- rectly spelled “behemoth” to take top honors at the Southeast South Dakota Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the University of South Dakota. Gillis, the daughter of Mike and Lilah Gillis of Yankton, finished first in the competition that featured 13 contestants from five area schools while Yankton Middle School student Bailey Sejnoha, daughter of Beau Sejnoha and Marie Huerta, was second. Gillis and Sejnoha advanced to the University of South Dakota Scripps Spelling Bee, which will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 17 at Aalfs Audi- torium on the USD campus. The winner of that competition will have an opportunity to advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washing- ton, D.C., May 29-June 1. In addition to Yankton Middle School, schools represented at the 2012 Southeast South Dakota Regional Spelling Bee included Sacred Heart Middle School (Yankton), St. Agnes Elementary (Vermillion), Dakota Val- ley Middle School (McCook Lake) and Scotland Middle School. Prior to the oral bee, students were required to complete a 50-word written spelling test. Yankton Middle School student Lauryn Perk, daugh- ter of Lisa Perk, was declared the winner of the written test followed by Dakota Valley’s Erica Okine, daughter of Albert and Mary Okine, who was second. Additional students participating were Alex Messersmith of Dakota Valley Elementary, Tanner Fitzgerald, Kellie Geigle, Spencer Huber and Brandon Shuey of Sacred Heart Middle School, Kerry Cosman, Logan Fis- cher and Kyra Sundleaf of Scotland Middle School and Maddie Powell of St. Agnes. Eleanor Linder Eleanor Edith Lindner, age 71, of Yankton, SD, died of natu- ral causes on Wednesday, Feb- ruary 22, 2012 at the Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD. Hearing For Man Accused Of Murder ResetFrom P&D Staff Reports

The hearing scheduled for Monday in the case of a Yankton mancharged with first-degree murder has been continued to the followingweek.

According to the Yankton County State’s Attorney Office, a hearingfor Nicholas Stewart Hines is now scheduled for 3:30 p.m. March 5 atthe Yankton County Courthouse and Safety Center.

City To Consider Meridian Bridge Trail DesignFrom P&D Staff Reports

The Yankton City Commission will consider a design Monday forthe trail near the Meridian Bridge.

Commissioners had earlier asked for estimates on how much itwould cost to stamp or color the concrete used for the trail. That in-formation will be presented Monday.

Also that night, the commission will hear a request from youthbaseball for $1,500 for its summer season, consider a request fromNuStar Pipeline for easement agreements and hold a public hearing fora grant opportunity for the Regional Technical Education Center.

The meeting gets under way at 7 p.m. in the City of Yankton Meet-ing Room, located at the Technical Education Center, 1200 W. 21st St.

Relay For Life Kickoff Event Is TuesdayThe American Cancer Society Relay For Life® of the Yankton Area

will officially get under way as event volunteers and participantsgather at the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital Pavilion for a kickoff eventto launch their fundraising efforts for the year. The event is set for 5:30p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28.

YMS Students Take Top Honors At Spelling BeeVERMILLION — Danielle Gillis, a Yankton Middle School student, cor-

rectly spelled “behemoth” to take top honors at the Southeast SouthDakota Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the University ofSouth Dakota.

Gillis, the daughter of Mike and Lilah Gillis of Yankton, finished first inthe competition that featured 13 contestants from five area schools whileYankton Middle School student Bailey Sejnoha, daughter of Beau Sejnohaand Marie Huerta, was second.

Gillis and Sejnoha advanced to the University of South Dakota ScrippsSpelling Bee, which will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 17 at Aalfs Audi-torium on the USD campus. The winner of that competition will have anopportunity to advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washing-ton, D.C., May 29-June 1.

In addition to Yankton Middle School, schools represented at the 2012Southeast South Dakota Regional Spelling Bee included Sacred HeartMiddle School (Yankton), St. Agnes Elementary (Vermillion), Dakota Val-ley Middle School (McCook Lake) and Scotland Middle School.

Prior to the oral bee, students were required to complete a 50-wordwritten spelling test. Yankton Middle School student Lauryn Perk, daugh-ter of Lisa Perk, was declared the winner of the written test followed byDakota Valley’s Erica Okine, daughter of Albert and Mary Okine, who wassecond.

beauty salon in Marion, SD.Later she worked at ConcordNursing Home and Human Serv-ices Center as a dietician.
