STAYERS EXAMINATION A
WELCOME DEVELOPMENT
By Emma Berry
The life of Peter Willett, who died in November at the age of
96, will be celebrated at a memorial service in Hampshire on
Thursday. As well as being a hugely respected bloodstock
journalist and author, his most significant contribution to the
racing industry was as the key orchestrator of what we now
know as the European Pattern.
The last time I saw Peter was in August and, despite his
advancing years, he still had plenty to say on racing matters.
Among various topics discussed that day was the fact that it was
his belief--and one shared by many--that the Pattern is now
somewhat unwieldy.
Thursday’s announcement by the European Pattern
Committee (EPC) that there will be five fewer black-type races in
2016 is therefore a small step in the right direction, but more
welcome still is the EPC’s decision to adopt a “pan-European
approach” to the staying division by establishing a
sub-committee to deal with the “worrying trend towards decline
in the pool of staying horses that the EPC would not want to see
continue.” Cont. p2
FIVE FRANKELS SET FOR INGLIS EASTER The progeny of 173 stakes winners, and siblings to 43 Group 1
winners, are among the 580 yearlings catalogued for Inglis’s
Australian Easter Yearling Sale Apr. 5 to 7. The catalogue for the
sale is now online.
“Years of meticulous planning and hard work by breeders and
vendors will culminate in what promises to be an amazing week
in Sydney this April,” said Inglis’s Managing Director Mark
Webster. “We are excited to offer 580 elite Thoroughbreds from
the best families across the globe, and to again play host to our
clients from around Australia and all parts of the world.”
The catalogue includes the progeny of Australia’s leading sires
like Fastnet Rock (Aus) (52), Sebring (Aus) (43), Snitzel (Aus)
(30), Street Cry (Ire) (28) and Redoute’s Choice (Aus) (24).
Britain’s unbeaten champion Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), whose
first 2-year-olds hit tracks in Europe this year, has five yearlings
bred on Southern Hemisphere-time catalogued. Cont. p4

Stayers Examination a Welcome Development cont. from p1
The sprinting programme for 3-year-olds has come under
scrutiny in recent years, with one enhancement being the
installation of a new Group 1 race for that age group at Royal
Ascot, the Commonwealth Cup. The race had the best possible
inauguration when won by the subsequent champion sprinter
Muhaarar (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and, even by mid-season in
2015, John Gosden was already talking about the
Commonwealth Cup as the main 3-year-old aim for his
high-flying juvenile
Shalaa (Ire) (Invincible
Spirit {Ire}). Now it’s
time to turn the
spotlight on the stayers.
One of the members of
the new EPC
sub-committee is the
BHA’s Director of
International Racing and
Racing Development,
Ruth Quinn, who has
already liaised on this
issue with the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (TBA), which
launched a campaign last April to “protect the future of the
British stayer” following an in-depth report into the dwindling
gene pool of stamina-laden blood. That report had been
triggered by the EPC’s downgrading of the Queen’s Vase, the
two-mile Royal Ascot contest for 3-year-olds which previously
held Group 3 status, and the G3 Bahrain Trophy being put on
the ‘at risk’ list for downgrading. The winner of both these races
in 2014 was Hartnell (GB) (Authorized {Ire}) and he exemplifies
the problem faced as he has subsequently been exported to
Australia where he won last year’s G1 The BMW.
Hartnell is a rarity in that he was not sold to go to Australia but
merely continued to race for Godolphin in a country where prize
money returns are better and the options are easier for
Northern Hemisphere-bred stayers. Such has been the success
of European imports in Australia’s major staying races that
progressive horses with good mile-and-a-half form in the book
are now greatly in demand by buyers from that country.
Despite accomplished middle-distance and staying horses being
of greater value as in-training purchases and able to compete in
more valuable races, there exists a notable push by breeders
towards the use of sprinting stallions in the British Isles and it is
this trend which most concerns the TBA.
In launching the campaign last spring, TBA Chairman Julian
Richmond-Watson commented, “It’s very much part of the TBA
ethos to look after the heritage and represent the future of
British racing.”
“This isn’t a crisis yet but we are heading towards one and webelieve that we need a carefully considered and enhancedracing programme with greater emphasis on what the stayerbrings to Flat racing.” It’s heartening that so many of the recent Derby winners havegained prominent stud positions in Britain and Ireland, largelythanks to Coolmore, which stands Galileo (Ire), Pour Moi (Ire),Camelot (Ire), Ruler OfThe World (Ire) andAustralia (Ire), whileDarley has New Approach(Ire) and Golden Horn(GB) (as well asAuthorized {Ire} inFrance), and Sir Percy (GB)is at Lanwades Stud. For decent winners at amile and a half and upoutside that elite bracketit can become harder tosecure a berth at a Flat stud, even if those victories have comeat Group 1 level. Witness the fact that at this Wednesday’s DBSJanuary Sale, a parade of 11 ‘National Hunt’ stallions containssuch high-class names as Dunaden (Fr), Schiaparelli (Ger),Telescope (Ire) and last year’s G1 Coronation Cup winnerPether’s Moon (Ire). Flat breeders can of course still use any ofthese stallions, and owner-breeders would be crazy not to whenthey stand for a fraction of the price of some standing distinctlyunder the Flat banner. To do so, however, means that theresultant offspring, if offered for sale, will attract little interestand lower bids than those yearlings by lesser-credentialed butmore precocious stallions. Turning around the mass market is nigh on impossible, andnaturally for many breeders to survive in the business, commercial considerations must remain uppermost in theirminds. This problem is not helped by the fact that prize moneyremains so woeful in all bar the top races in Britain that ownersare understandably becoming keener to see quick results fromhorses who are able to be up and running earlier in theircareers. We are still fortunate to have an abundance of staying blood inthe European stallion ranks and, for that to remain the case, it’sencouraging to see the EPC taking action now to halt the erosionof those races at the upper end of the distance spectrum andprovide sufficient progression for stayers throughout the racingprogramme. Both factors are vital if we are to be able tocontinue to do what the European Thoroughbred breedingindustry does best--producing racehorses with stamina to matchtheir class. Five Frankels Set For Inglis Easter cont. from p1
The five Frankel yearlings catalogued include lot 417, a half-sister to G3 Albany S. and G3 Sceptre S. winner Kiyoshi (Ire)(Dubawi {Ire}); lot 423, a colt who is the first foal out of Group 2winner More Strawberries (Aus) (More Than Ready); and lot237, a filly who is the first produce of South African Group 1winner Chocolicious (SAf) (Kahal). Pierro (Aus) and All Too Hard (Aus), the standout first-seasonsires at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier thismonth, have 41 and 37 catalogued respectively. factoring in currency exchange rates," Webster said. "This is theyear to invest in Australian bloodstock, even more importantlyto invest in Thoroughbreds that have the potential to performwell beyond their 2-year-old campaigns; Thoroughbreds thathave scope on the racetrack and in the breeding barn such asrecent Easter graduates All Too Hard, Deep Field and Wandjina. This is the one sale around the globe in 2016 that serious racinginvestors and enthusiasts don’t want to miss.”
MILLIONS UP FOR GRABS
With the majority of the entrants in Sunday’s NZ$1 millionKaraka Million having started three times or fewer, the country’srichest race--for graduates of the NZB yearling sale series thatkicks off Monday--is up for the taking. The lone group winner inthe field of 14 2-year-olds is Manolo Blahniq (NZ) (Jimmy Choux{NZ}), who broke his maiden at second asking in the G3 EclipseS. at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day over a handful of rivals that willre-oppose here. One that rides a two-race win streak is thegelding Caorunn (NZ) (Showcasing {GB}), who was last seenwinning over 100 meters shorter than this at Awapuni Dec. 19,so will have to defy a short layoff. One who won’t have theexcuse of being rusty is Nova Swiss (NZ) (Swiss Ace {Aus}), whowas seen one week ago keeping his two-race unbeaten recordintact with a win over this trip. Tennessee (NZ) (Per Incanto{NZ}) broke his maiden at first asking over Caorunn Sept. 12, butlost his unbeaten mark when fourth in the Eclipse.

INTERNATIONALS BUSY AT CAPE SALEBy Liesl King
The Cape Premier Yearling Sale concluded at the Cape Town
Convention Centre Friday with two new South African records
and solid prices across the board. The aggregate increased 20%
to R135,650,000 (£5,772,917/€7,619,339) with 28% more
horses catalogued. The average was slightly down from
R644,117 to R600,211 (£25,556/€33,713) (-6.8%), while the
median dropped from R400,000 to R375,000 (£15,967/€21,096)
(-6.3%). The top vendor was Klawervlei Stud with 49 yearlings
selling for R38,270 000 (£1,629,484/€2,152,878), while Mayfair
Speculators (alone and with partners) headed the buyers' list,
acquiring nine yearlings for R13,400,000 (£570,269/€753,816).
Silvano dominated the sires' list with 22 yearlings selling for
R24,500,000 (£1,042,657/€1,378,247).
"We are obviously delighted by the two new South African
records set during the first session, but more than that we are
delighted with the incredible increase in the international buying
bench,” said Adrian Todd, managing director of Cape
Thoroughbred Sales. “This is the first time that buyers from the
UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Hong Kong and the USA were
actively competing for horses. Together with the incredible
partnerships forged by Mayfair Speculators with international
buyers such as Coolmore amongst others, the local buying
bench remained strong and competed successfully for the top
lots.”
The Coolmore/Mayfair Speculators partnership teamed with
Andreas Jacobs Friday to buy Lot 183, a Dynasty (SAf) filly out of
Grade 3 winner Crimson Blossom (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}),
for a session-topping R5.25 million (£223,537/€295,192). Derek
Brugman, Mayfair Speculators's racing manager, rated the filly
highly. "She is a beautiful filly, who walks like a panther. A
stunning individual with huge international appeal and a massive
paddock value,” he said. “It made sense for us to buy her."
The locals finally
got a look in when
Lot 220, a Dynasty
colt out of Garland
(SAf) (Capture Him)
was knocked down
to Mike Azzie for R3
million
(£127,753/€168,680)
. Azzie, who trains
the half- brother
Greek Legend (SAf), was not to be deterred and outlasted the
European opposition. "I think very highly of Greek Legend; he
could win the Gold Cup this year,” Azzie said. “But this colt has
more substance. He is a phenomenal animal and so we put a
syndicate together in order to buy him."
European-based Peter Doyle was active during the session, in
quick succession signing for Lots 134 at R850,000
(£36,197/€47,793); 148 at R1.2 million (£51,076/€67,472); and
168 for R700,000 (£29,794/€39,359), then combining with Kip
Elser when going to R650,000 (£27,679/€36,547) for Lot 155, a
Var colt out of the Windrush mare Baltic Beauty (SAf) from the
draft of Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm. The Doyles later added
Lot 243, a Dynasty colt out of the Giant's Causeway mare Irish
Torrent, with the hammer falling at R1.1 million
(£46,843/€61,849).
"We got run over [Thursday]," said Doyle with a wry smile. "In
fact it was a train wreck and
we only got two lots.
[Friday] has been wonderful
and we managed to buy
some really lovely horses."
It was Vive la France as
Henri Bozo, one of the
underbidders on day one’s
record-breaking filly, finally
had the hammer come
down in his favour. Bozo is
no stranger to South Africa,
having spent a summer foaling down mares at Antony Beck's
Highlands Farm Stud. Hence, he is familiar with the South
African pedigrees and Lot 169, a filly by Captain Al (SAf) out of
the National Assembly mare Captivating Party (SAf) was exactly
what he was looking for. After some spirited bidding the filly was
knocked down to him for R2.4 million (£102,152/€134,944). "I
bought her on behalf of Andreas Putsch, Lady O'Reilly, Qatar
Racing, Mayfair Speculators and of course Ecurie Des
Monceaux,” Bozo explained. “We will race her here and
hopefully have some fun. She has tremendous paddock value
and we were happy that we were successful this time.”
Justin Casse was back in action when signing for Lot 191, a
Captain Al colt consigned by Klawervlei Stud, at R2.2 million
(£93,639/€123,699). The colt is out of the Galileo mare Della
Scala (SAf) from the female family of Procrastinate (Aus),
Laisserfaire (Aus) and Time Thief (Aus). Casse explained that the
unnamed colt was bought in partnership with Linda Shanahan
and Diane Nagle. "It was a colt we all liked and rather than bid
against each other we decided to team up and have some fun,”
Casse said. “He is more a Galileo than Captain Al and we are
delighted to have got him.” Cont. p6Peter Doyle (left) and Kip Elser | Liesl King

A Million Dollars On the Line at Kenilworth... The plan for the CTS Million Dollar race was unveiled prior to
the Cape Premier Sale two years ago, and the 1400 meter race
finally comes to fruition Saturday, offering sales graduates a
shot at $1 million. With the exchange rate not in the Rand's
favor, the $1 million computes to a staggering R16,785,000 and
a full field of 16 3-year-olds will take their place on the starting
line.
A clear favorite must be the G1 Cape Fillies Guineas winner,
Silver Mountain (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}). Her Cape Fillies Guineas
win saw her romping home by an easy five lengths. Few fillies
ever take on the colts in the subsequent G1 Investec Cape
Guineas, but Silver Mountain was considered up to the task by
her trainer Mike Bass. After being badly cut into and with her
jockey failing to make use of her number one draw, Silver
Mountain was left with too much to do in the home straight and
her fourth place finish was an admirable effort. She is one of
only two G1 winners in the field and with a sex allowance of
2.5kg, she is clearly the one to beat.
Her main opposition is likely to come from the other Grade I
winner in the field, Seventh Plain (SAf) (Seventh Rock {Aus}). The
Dennis Drier-trained colt has, however, performed below par in
his last two starts and with the extra weight, the task of beating
the filly may be a bridge too far. Seventh Plain will also need
master tactician Anton Marcus to be at his very best to
overcome his outside draw in barrier 15. Another colt, whose
connections have the winner's prize firmly in their sights, is the
Charles Laird-trained Exit Here (SAf) (Jay Peg {SAf}). Anthony
Delpech has the ride and the colt, with the coveted one draw,
has the front-running style required to fight out the finish.

Sefri went for home entering the final 500 meters of Friday’s
G3 Jebel Ali Mile, the venue’s richest event, and managed to
stave off a final bid from hot favorite Forjatt, who won the Mile
in 2014 before losing the race in the stewards’ room in defense
of his title 12 months back.
“We thought he would run well today,” explained trainer
Erwan Charpy, winning the race for the third time.
Runner-up in the G3 Prix la Force in 2013 when trained for
Sheikh Hamdan by Jean-Claude Rouget, the consistent Sefri
landed a rated conditions test over 1800 meters Dec. 18 before
finishing fourth, better than six lengths adrift of Forjatt in a
course-and-distance prep Jan. 8. Charpy took the decision to add
blinkers and it paid off in spades.
“If you look at his run in the prep race, he received a big bump
on the bend and he is not the easiest of horses to balance at the
best of times so it did not help. He still finished fourth in that
and we put the half-blinkers on today to help him travel a bit
better in the race. That worked and, once he gets to the front,
he is a hard horse to pass.
Charpy continued, “We will look at the [Listed] Jebel Ali S.
[1950m, Dhs500,000 Feb. 19] and perhaps try him again at
Meydan, but the style of dirt racing is fast and furious which did
not suit him last season.”
Sefri’s second dam is a Group 3-winning half-sister to GSWs
Bint Salsabil and Sahm, both produced by champion Salsabil
(Ire), while other members of the female family include Marju
(Ire), Song of Tara (Ire) and Echo of Light (GB), the latter of
which also hails from the Seeking the Gold sire line.

THE “NEW LAUREL” TO BIDFOR BREEDERS’ CUP
by Bill Finley
The Stronach Group has grand plans for the future of Laurel
Park, including hosting a future Breeders’ Cup.
Sal Sinatra, the president and general manager of Laurel and
sister track Pimlico, said that members of Stronach’s
management team have informed Breeders’ Cup officials that
they would like Laurel to be considered as a future site for the
year-end championship event, possibly as soon as 2018. With
sites set for this year and in 2017, 2018 is the next available
open slot for a Breeders’ Cup.
Laurel is in the midst of a massive renovation project that is
estimated to cost around $200 million. When it is done, the
track will somewhat follow the model of Gulfstream Park, where
restaurants, bars and a shopping center make up a multi-
purpose facility that has become much more than a racetrack.
Cont. p3
ZULU TO FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier, Derrick Smith and
Stonestreet Stables’ unbeaten Zulu (Bernardini) is being aimed
at the GII Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream Park Feb. 27.
Trained by Todd Pletcher,
Zulu earned the ‘TDN Rising
Star’ distinction with an
impressive $75,000 optional
claiming tally going seven
furlongs in the Gulfstream
slop Jan. 15 (video). The bay,
a $400,000 KEESEP yearling
and $900,000 FTFMAR
juvenile, also won his debut
in Hallandale going a furlong shorter Dec. 5.
The Fountain of Youth, contested at 1 1/16 miles, would be
Zulu’s first trip around two turns.
“You would think a Bernardini out of a Summer Squall mare
wouldn’t have a limit, pedigree-wise,” Pletcher said. “The
question now is: it’s going to be his first step up into a graded
stake against more seasoned, more experienced company, I
would assume. I like the spacing of it. He’s already had two races
over the track. He seems to like it. You have to step up and see
where you are at some point.” Cont. p3

New Laurel to Bid for BC cont.
“Frank [Stronach] wants to make Laurel his third jewel along
with Santa Anita and Gulfstream,” Sinatra said. “The Breeders’
Cup has not been held on the East Coast in a long time [since
2007 at Monmouth Park] and we believe that not only is it time
for it to be run in this part of the country, but that Laurel would
be a perfect place to do so. We have a great turf course, we
have all the advantages that come with being in close proximity
to Washington, D.C. and this is going to be a spectacular facility
when we are done. I’m not sure we’ll be ready to have the
Breeders’ Cup in 2018 or not, but we definitely want to have
one here.”
Sinatra said that most of the work on the first floor of the
building has been completed. Stronach will visit Laurel in person
next week, and after he consults with Sinatra and other
members of the Laurel team, the next phase of the renovation
project is set to begin.
With so much effort and expense being put into Laurel it might
seem reasonable to move the GI Preakness S. to that racetrack.
Sinatra would not rule out that some day the Preakness could go
from Pimlico to Laurel, but said no such plans are imminent.
“The Preakness will be run at Pimlico for the foreseeable
future,” he said. “We are working with the state on options for
upgrading the facility and studies are being done for feasibility.”
Sinatra envisions Laurel some day becoming a “hub track” for
the Mid-Atlantic region. Colonial Downs did not race in 2015 and
its future is up in the air. Delaware Park has seen its business slip
in part due to short fields.
“We had several talks with Delaware and the people in Virginia
last year about creating a circuit, but weren’t able to work
anything out,” Sinatra said. “The people at Delaware Park were
not interested, and that’s something we can’t control. One thing
is certain, that with this turf course here and what we can do
with it, Laurel needs to be racing in the summer. But with the
foal crop declining and everyone struggling so much to fill fields,
some sort of circuit in this area seems almost inevitable.”
Zulu to FOY cont.
Pletcher has saddled the winners of the past two editions of
the GI Florida Derby with fellow ‘TDN Rising Stars’ Constitution
(Tapit) (2014) and Materiality (Afleet Alex) (2015).
“I can’t say [Zulu] reminds me of the two Florida Derby
winners. The horse that he reminds me of is Stay Thirsty,”
Pletcher said of the 2011 GI Travers S. winner. “Physically,
they’re very similar types and they’re both by Bernardini.”

‘ROOM’ FOR FRESH FACE IN SANTA MONICA Room for Me (Harlington) makes the cross country trip from
New York for Saturday’s GII Santa Monica S. at Santa Anita. The
bay, third after leading in the stretch in last summer’s GI
Ballerina S. at Saratoga, followed a win in Aqueduct’s Garland of
Roses S. Dec. 5 with a third-place finish behind champion La
Verdad (Yes It’s True) in the Interborough S. Jan. 9. Owned and
trained by David Jacobson, Room for Me won three of four
attempts at Santa Anita while previously campaigned on the
West Coast. Ben’s Duchess (Munnings), an impressive come-
from-behind winner of the GIII L.A. Woman S. Oct. 4, returned
with a disappointing fourth at odds of 3-1 in the GI La Brea S.
Dec. 26. She gets the slight nod on the morning-line at 5-2.
“Hopefully, we’re going to rebound from her fourth-place finish
in the La Brea,” trainer John Sadler said.
“She missed getting a prep race for that race, but now she’s
had a race and trained steadily since with two good works.”
Prize Exhibit (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) makes her first attempt on
the dirt here. The three-time graded winner enters off a narrow
tally in the GII Monrovia S. going down the hill Jan. 3.

JOE OLESKY:
Bravo! Great article (click here for Bill Finley’s op/ed piece on
Frank Stronach)! I have been a huge critic of Stronach and other
horse/track owners over the years, however, it is time to give
credit where credit is due. He is the lone wolf out there in terms
of trying new ideas and pushing agendas to try and make the
game better in both the short and long run. We need more
people in leadership positions like Stronach to take the bull by
the horns and try things fast and furiously since you really are
not going to know what might work and what will not unless you
try…….besides, what do these race track owners have to lose
anyway….since the evolution/decline of this great game is
already underway (i.e., just see takeout, technological
generation, HANA and Texas racing to better understand my
comments)!

JOCKEYS AND JEANS SET FOR FEB. 28
Fasig-Tipton has partnered with Jockeys and Jeans, a special
event to benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.
The third annual Jockeys and Jeans--set for Sunday, Feb. 28 at
12 p.m. at Gulfstream Park--will host an online auction of
donated seasons for at least a week before the event listing
information on each stallion donated, with bidding available
online. Seasons receiving more than one bid will be sold at
auction at the event. Bidders can also phone in bids. Some
seasons will be placed in the event=s silent auction with the
option of those becoming part of the live auction. Fasig-Tipton
auctioneers and their announcer will supervise the auctions.
The Under-Tack Show for Fasig-Tipton=s Florida Sale of
2-year-olds takes place the day following the fund raiser, with
their sale set for March 2.
"We believe the timing of their sale and our event opens the
door to attracting more horse persons to attend, meet a lot of
Hall of Fame riders they probably already know and honor a
group of severely injured former jockeys," said Jockey and Jeans
President Barry Pearl. "Fasig-Tipton's participation promises to
do much to increase much needed and appreciated funds for
severely injured jockeys."
Roger Blanco, Jack Fires, Gary Donahue, Rene Douglas, Tad
Leggett, Mike Straight and Ann Von Rosen will all be honored
this year. Hall of Famers Bill Boland, Walter Blum, Angel Cordero
Jr., Pat Day, Sandy Hawley, Laffit Pincay. Jr., Edgar Prado, Jose
Santos, Randy Romero, John Rotz, Jacinto Vasquez, Jorge
Velasquez and Manuel Ycaza will all make special appearances.
Tickets are $50 and include a luncheon buffet, soft drinks,
coffee and exclusive meet-and-greet and event access. Tickets
are available on www.gulfstreampark.com under Event &
Entertainment or by calling (954) 457-6201 Thursday-Sunday
11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Jockeys and Jeans is a stand-alone organization founded in
2014 by a group of former jockeys who seek to raise awareness
of the inherent dangers of race riding, raise funds for PDJF, and
most of all recognize and honor the efforts of the their fallen
brothers and sisters who each day fight and win the battle
against disability. Jockeys and Jeans raised over $204,000 at
their second annual event at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino last
year.

his career--sprinting at Belmont last May; routing on the grass

a mile of the local main track after adding blinkers Nov. 7. Part
of a 6-5 entry, the Broman homebred doled out splits of :23.92,

in midstretch, he grew very leg-weary in the waning moments,
but got his nose down on the line to deny Repent Twice
