Rediscover the Rosary Like May, October is a Marian Month, during which we honor the Blessed Virgin Mary — especially by praying the Rosary. Many popes have encouraged us to do so, notably St. John Paul II, as well as Pope Paul VI, who in 1974 issued his Apostolic Exhortation Marialis Cultus: For the Right Ordering and Development of Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope Pius VI, in fact, devoted 14 articles of this exhortation to the Rosary. What follows is an excerpt:
W e wish now … to dwell for a moment
on the renewal of the pious practice which has been called “the compendium of the entire Gospel”: the Rosary. To this our predecessors have devoted close attention and care. On many occasions they have recommended its frequent recitation, encouraged its diffusion, explained its nature,
recognized its suitability for fostering contemplative prayer … and recalled its intrinsic effectiveness for promoting Christian life and apostolic commitment. … As a Gospel prayer, centered on the mystery of the redemptive Incarnation, the Rosary is therefore a prayer with a clearly Christological orientation. Its most characteristic element, in fact, the litany-like succession of Hail Marys, becomes in itself an unceasing praise of Christ, who is the ultimate object both of the angel’s announcement and of the greeting of the mother of John the Baptist: “Blessed is the fruit of your womb.” … The Jesus that each Hail Mary recalls is the same Jesus whom the suc-cession of the mysteries proposes to us — now as the Son of God, now as the Son of the Virgin — at His birth in a stable at Bethlehem, at His presentation by His Mother in the Temple, as a youth full of zeal for His Father's affairs, as the Redeemer in agony in the garden, scourged and crowned with thorns, carrying the cross and dying on Calvary, risen from the dead and ascended to the glory of the Father to send forth the gift of the Spirit. … By its nature, the recitation of the Rosary calls for a quiet rhythm and a lingering pace, helping the individual to meditate on the mysteries of the Lord’s life as seen through the eyes of her who was closest to the Lord. In this way the unfathomable riches of these mysteries are unfolded.
Wednesday October 18th St. Luke-Evangelist
Wednesday we celebrate the feast of St. Luke, who wrote both the Gospel of Luke and The Acts of the Apostles. He is the patron saint of surgeons,
doctors, painters, and glass artists.
Prayer to St. Luke
Most wonderful St. Luke, you were animated by the Heavenly Spirit of
Love. In faithfully detailing the humanity of Jesus, you
also showed His Divinity and His genuine
compassion for all human beings.
May the Holy Spirit, instructor of the faithful,
help me to understand Christ’s words and
Faithfully apply them in my life.
Amen Andrea Mantegna’s St. Luke, 1452

In light of the recent tragic events in the United States and elsewhere, the Diocese of Providence will have a special
Mass on Sunday, October 15 at 10:00 AM in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul in
Providence. Bishop Thomas J. Tobin will celebrate the Mass for all those who are suffering from the recent hurri-
canes in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Is-lands, the earthquake in Mexico and the Las Vegas
shooting spree. Everyone is invited to attend.
The Gabriel Project
During October — which is Respect Life Month in the Diocese of Providence — St. Joseph Church will hold a “baby shower” to support The Gabriel Project, a
diocesan ministry that helps women and families facing problem pregnancies. A table will be placed at the back of the church until Oct. 30 for any donations of baby goods
(diapers, wipes, baby shampoo, etc.) or money. Small-denomination gift cards to drugstores (CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens)
and retailers (Target, Walmart, etc.) are especially appreciated.
We invite all women to the Catholic/Christian Women’s MAGNIFICAT® Breakfast

We are delighted to have as our guest speaker Linda Perry. Linda has had many events in her earlier years resulting in
the wrong choices and dabbling in the occult. Her conversion to the faith was ongoing over the years. She will
also share the practice and traditions of her "Native American Heritage". Please join us for this inspiring faith-filled
day of praise, worship and sharing. Please bring along a friend. For more information, Call Linda Gatta 401-864-7731
The remaining Altar Server Classes will be held on October 21st and November 11th (if needed), at 12:00 p.m. in the main Church. Classes will last about one hour. For more information please call the rectory at 421-9137.
Older siblings are welcome to help in the training.
World Mission Sunday
October 21st & 22nd Next weekend’s second collection supports the
Society for the Propagation of the Faith, and is vital to the missionaries serving in 1,150 dioceses throughout the world. For this year’s
World Mission Sunday celebration, we are
focusing on the words “I will build my
Church” (Matthew 16:18), highlighting the outreach of
local churches through priests, religious, and laity among the poor and mar-
ginalized half a world away. Thank you for your
prayers and generous support!
All Souls Day November 2 The Church Universal designates November as the
month in which we celebrate the memory of our
beloved dead, and remember them at Masses and in our prayers. All Souls envelopes are included in your budget or they may be found at the church entrance. Place the names of the departed on the envelope, place it in the
collection basket, and they will be remembered throughout November.
Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord! And let perpetual light shine up on them! Amen
That God, who looks for justice rather than blood-shed, may strengthen all nations to protect human life, especially at its most
vulnerable stages, we pray to the Lord...
Rosary
Please join us in saying the Rosary on
Tuesdays and Thursdays in the chapel following the 8 a.m. Mass.
All Saints Day — Wednesday, November 1st Masses: 8:00 a.m. & 6:30 p.m.
Holy Day of Obligation The feast that we know as All Saints Day originated as a
feast of all martyrs. In order to honor the memory of these unnamed saints, and to recall their example, the
Church dedicated a special feast day — a sort of “memorial day” — so that all living Christians would
celebrate at a special Mass the lives and witness of those “who have died and gone before us into the presence of
the Lord.”
