Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) and Pierro (Lonhro),
dual hemisphere sensations So You Think (High
Chaparral) and Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock)
and two American Triple Crown winners,
American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) and

Magna Grecia, winner of the 2,000
Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) last year as well as the Vertem Futurity Trophy (Gr 1,
1m) at Doncaster as a two-year-old, will be the third winner of Newmarket’s
Classic to join the Coolmore line-up this year, alongside Churchill
(Galileo) and Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact). He will be the seventh son of
Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) to stand at stud in Australia.
His dam Cabaret (Galileo) was a Group 3 winner, while his family
dates back to the influential Eyewash (Blue Peter), who counts Might And
Power (Zabeel), Mosheen (Fastnet Rock) and Sariska (Pivotal) among her
descendants.
Invincible Spirit has already proven to be a sire of sires through the
exploits of stallions like I Am Invincible, Cable Bay and Kingman.
Champion trainer Aidan O’Brien wasn’t surprised by the colt’s
success: “Magna Grecia always stood out for two reasons, he was such a
good-looking horse and he showed so much speed even from his early
two-year-old days.” After the colt’s retirement was announced, O’Brien
added: “His Group 1 wins at 2 and 3 were top-class and the form of those
races has turned out extremely well. His win in the 2,000 Guineas on his
seasonal debut was outstanding.”
Kingman, who is enjoying a tremendous run from just two crops to
race, is already following in his father’s footsteps in producing the speedy
Calyx - already touted as his fastest son.
Winner of the event widely considered the northern hemisphere’s
Golden Slipper equivalent, the Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Royal Ascot
- defeating three-time Group 1 winner Advertise (Showcasing) - the John
Gosden-trained Calyx was brilliant in his first three starts, before he was
injured and retired after start four when second in the Sandy Lane Stakes
(Gr 2, 6f) at Haydock.
“Calyx always had that
rare brilliance you only see
in champions,” Gosden said
upon the colt’s retirement. “His
performances at Ascot at both two
and three years were of the highest
standard. He is a very similar type
to his sire Kingman.” His regular
rider Frankie Dettori added: “He
was blessed with so much speed.
He was a serious horse.”
Calyx’s dam Helleborine
(Observatory) won the Prix
d’Aumale (Gr 3, 1600m), defeating
dual Group 1 winner Immortal
Verse (Pivotal), while she was
runner-up in a strong edition of
the Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr 1,
1600m) on the Arc undercard.
Calyx hails from a strong family
of sprinter-milers that includes
Group 1 winners African Rose (Observatory) and Distant Music (Distant
View).
“We are delighted to welcome two very exciting new sires in Calyx
and Magna Grecia to Coolmore Australia,” said nominations and sales
manager Colm Santry. “They’re both top-class racehorses from the red-
hot Invincible Spirit sire line and are both out of Group winning juveniles.
In fact Calyx is the fastest son of Kingman, while Magna Grecia is the only
son of Invincible Spirit to be a Group 1 winner at two and three.
He added: “I inspected both horses in Ireland a few months ago and
they’re very good lookers. Both are strong individuals with impressive walks.”
“Calyx and Magna Grecia are two important additions to our stallion
roster, as is our record-breaking Everest winner Yes Yes Yes,” Coolmore
Australia principal Tom Magnier said. “All three stallions demonstrated
exceptional ability at both two and three. We feel very fortunate to be able
to offer them to Australian breeders.”
Both Magna Grecia and Calyx entered the market at €22,500
(approximately AUD$38,000) when standing at Coolmore in Ireland.
Fees for all three first season sires, as well as the entire Coolmore
roster, will be announced at a later date.

Record Inglis Digital online auction catalogueA total of 564 horses have been entered for this
week’s Inglis Digital April Online Sale, smashing
the previous record of 376 from July 2019.
Among the entries are 77 racehorses, 94 race
fillies, 22 shares, 73 weanlings, 102 yearlings,
189 broodmares (five 3-in-1 packages, 100
in foal, 16 foals at foot), two unbroken stock
and five stallions. With the sheer size of the
catalogue, as reported yesterday, the final
countdown has now been pushed back to next
Thursday. Inglis Digital Business Manager Nick
Melmeth said: “When we saw the amount of
entries coming in this week, we realised buyers
and vendors will need that little bit of extra time
to work through the catalogue and also didn’t
want to be selling horses late into Wednesday
night. We are staggered by the support from
vendors, many of whom have large drafts of
broodmares, yearlings and weanlings and we
wish them all the best for the sale.’’
Stradbroke on cards for GraffWhile trainer Kris Lees expects the annual
southern raids on the Brisbane winter carnival
to be smaller than in recent years, he is hoping
to take Graff (Star Witness) north of the border
for the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m),
with the four-year-old to resume in today’s
Hawkesbury Rush (Listed, 1100m). Graff steps
out for a new ownership group that includes
Australian Bloodstock and Aquis Farm,
having previously raced for Alan Bell. “I don't
think you'll have the influx of horses going to
Brisbane that you normally have so I think the
field sizes will hold some strength and these
races on Saturday are a good indication of that,"
Lees said. "A lot of horses would be up there
for other races. It's not easy to get them there
to Queensland to race so you'd probably only
go with very much the right horses I would
suggest. (Graff) can get to a Stradbroke if his
form warrants it but the Scone carnival, which
is now in Sydney, there are a couple of races
there that would suit."
Pride trying to rejuvenate ArchedemusKnown as a master of reviving the careers of
older horses, Joe Pride is looking forward to
Archedemus (Lope de Vega) making his stable
debut in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup (Gr 3,
1500m) later today, a race he won a year ago
when trained by Gwenda Markwell. "He is a
lovely style of horse. To me, he's got the perfect
build for a thoroughbred in terms of size and
strength and he is loaded with ability," Pride
said. However, he added a note of caution that
the horse may take a little time before he returns
to his Group-winning form: "I don't think we're
going to see that kind of horse tomorrow, I
think he will need a run or so, but I would like
to think he's on his way back there."
Nicci’s Gold on the improveTrainer Gary Portelli was concerned that
Nicci’s Gold (Nicconi) was showing signs that
she’d had enough earlier this preparation, with
her trackwork lacklustre and her demeanour
lethargic. However, since she resumed in the
Sapphire Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), Portelli says that
she has returned to her old self. "I was thinking
this might be the prep where I wouldn't get
her to the track. Some of these mares just
decide that's it and she was struggling to come
into form with her trackwork and just wasn't
her usual self," Portelli said. "Since that run I
have seen her back to her usual ways. She has
come on in leaps and bounds since." Nicci’s
Gold tackles today’s Hawkesbury Crown (Gr 3,
1300m).
Indy Car sold
Talented three-year-old Indy Car (Sebring)
was yesterday scratched from the Hawkesbury
Guineas (Gr 3, 1400m) after owner-breeder
Gerry Harvey elected to sell the gelding to Hong
Kong interests. A winner of three of his five
starts, bloodstock agents have been enquiring
about Indy Car since he won his maiden on
debut at Newcastle last October. The Anthony
Cummings-trained horse, who was passed in
with a reserve of $125,000 at the 2018 Magic
Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, was vetted
this week and Harvey has accepted an increased
offer for the last-start South Pacific Stakes
(Listed, 1400m) winner. "He is a pretty nice
horse. He is working his way through the grades
here and he has actually done more at the
same time than Montaigne had done so you're
entitled to be confident of him performing over
there," Cummings said, comparing Indy Car to
former stable star Montaigne (Road To Rock),
who - as Beauty Generation - has blossomed
into a champion in Hong Kong.

In-form Waterhouse-Bott team chasing GuineasIt has been a big few weeks for the Gai Waterhouse
and Adrian Bott training partnership, headlined
by their Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)
win with Farnan (Not A Single Doubt). They will
be hoping to continue their good run when they
tackle today’s Hawkesbury Guineas (Gr 3, 1400m)
with Dawn Passage (Dawn Approach) and Rule
The World (Hallowed Crown). Bott admits Dawn
Passage is inconsistent but also says that he is
talented enough to win. "He has been a little bit
of a frustrating type because I've got a lot of time
for him - I think he's got a lot of natural ability -
but I've had to make a few excuses for him," Bott
said. "Hopefully we don't have to make any on
Saturday. He's been just a bit unlucky with his
racing pattern of getting back. The 1400 metres
should be suitable for him. He can hopefully sit a
bit closer and I feel he'll be able to let down better
on top of the ground. As for Rule The World, he is
a lovely prospect," Bott said. "He's always shown
well above average ability.”
Grandslam chasing Anzac Day Stakes win
The younger brother of Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m)
winner Jameka (Myboycharlie), Grandslam, is
chasing a stakes victory of his own when he tackles
today’s Flemington opener, the Anzac Day Stakes
(Listed, 1400m). The Ciaron Maher and David
Eustace-trained Grandslam won at his second start
at Morphettville, paving the way for his attempt
against Listed company. "He's a lovely colt," Eustace
said. "We've brought him along fairly gently but he
was impressive in Adelaide considering where he
was in the run and how he had to get himself out of
jail a bit. He's taken plenty from that and he's really,
really come on for that experience. He's going to
really relish Flemington and 1400 metres. We're
looking forward to it. He's definitely a horse that as a
physical type has always been quite striking. There's
definitely similarities to his sister as well. He's only
going to improve with a bit of ground and a bit of
time, next spring when he gets to the mile."
Goodwood goal for The InevitableFormer Tasmanian galloper The Inevitable
(Dundeel) will debut for trainer Patrick Payne
at Flemington today with one eye on The
Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville next
month. Tasmanian racing has been shut down
due to Covid-19, forcing trainer Scott Brunton
to send some of his best horses across the Bass
Strait, including The Inevitable to Payne. "(I've
had the horse) only about 10 days. Scotty Brunton
sent him over here really fit, he's a great trainer
Scotty," Payne told RSN927. "Pretty much just sent
him over and all we had to do is keep him pretty
happy and not do too much with him. He worked
at Kyneton on Monday morning and just had a
canter around. He just had a little piece of work
(Thursday) morning just to make sure everything
is okay with him. This run will top him off as he is
going to The Goodwood."
Russian Camelot scratched from FlemingtonThe checkered preparation of Russian Camelot
(Camelot) has continued after he was scratched
from today’s Lt Peter Armytage Handicap
(1700m) at Flemington due to an inflamed
throat. Russian Camelot was odds-on to win
today on his way to the South Australian Derby
(Gr 1, 2500m), having easily won at Pakenham
two weeks ago after being scratched at the gates
at Caulfield five days earlier. Trainer Danny
O’Brien said the plan was still to head to
Morphettville, where Russian Camelot is set
to meet a crack field including Victoria Derby
(Gr 1, 2500m) winner Warning (Declaration
Of War), last-start Frank Packer Plate (Gr 3,
2000m) victor Kinane (Reliable Man) and local
hope Dalasan (Dalakhani).
Home track to help MilwaukeeA return to Flemington’s straight track will
see Milwaukee (Fastnet Rock) return to form,
according to trainer Mike Moroney. Milwaukee
ran poorly first-up at Caulfield last start,
finishing almost 14 lengths from Order Of
Command (Squamosa) in a 1200-metre open
handicap. He steps back to 1000 metres, a trip
he has not tried before, but he is a four-time
winner down the straight. "I think you'll see a
different Milwaukee tomorrow," Moroney said.
"His work this week has been superb. We're
expecting him to show big improvement. He's
such hard horse to get fit. You've got to really get
the work into him and he has prepped up nicely
for this race as if he's turned the corner. He loves
the straight so I expect him to run really well."
St Leger tilt for Royal CrownTrainer Robbie Griffiths hopes Royal Crown
(Helmet) can keep stepping up as he prepares
to tackled today’s VRC St Leger (Listed, 2800m).
A last-start winner of the Galilee Series Final
(Listed, 2400m), Royal Crown joined Griffiths
from the Mick Kent yard, with Kent taking time
away from the training caper. “I've had two text
messages from him (Kent), one after he won at
Sandown and one after the Galilee," Griffiths
said. "Mick didn't have a program in mind for
the horse when he dropped him off. He said,
'How you get to the final is up to you', so when
he won at Sandown I got 'well-placed with a
thumbs-up' then after Caulfield 'thumbs-up
and good job'." Griffiths is considering the
South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) for Royal
Crown should he run well today.
Repetiteur ‘over the odds’Trainer Henry Dwyer believes his improving
filly Repetiteur (Americain) is over the odds for
the VRC St Leger (Listed, 2800m) at Flemington
today. The $151 chance is a maiden after seven
career starts, however she showed improved
form in finishing second over 2400m at Bendigo
on her last start. When asked if Repetiteur could
spoil the party this year, Dwyer said: "With our
150-1 chance, Repetiteur? Probably not. But
these staying fillies don't get too many options
to race for black type and I honestly think she's
well over the odds.” Dwyer scratched the filly
from a maiden event at Cranbourne yesterday
and added: “I think the 2800m is even more
suitable for her. If you just take her last run
in isolation she probably goes in as a 30-1
chance.”

Winter in offing for GuntantesGuntantes (Rothesay) may take a step forward
as one of a possible three runners for trainer
Robert Heathcote in the Stradbroke Handicap
(Gr 1, 1400m) when he runs at the Sunshine
Coast today. The gelding is considered one
of the best three-year-olds in Queensland
but finished last at his latest start. Heathcote
believes he found the reason for the poor run.
“Guntantes had a big weight and was caught
deep. And he had a hoof problem after his last
run but I am confident we have got over that,”
Heathcote said. The trainer trialled his galloper
on Tuesday, finishing a strong third to top mare
Outback Barbie (Spirit Of Boom). Heathcote
then gave the green for the gelding to run in
the QTIS 3YO Plate (1400m) at the Sunshine
Coast today. “Adie Thompson will claim
two kilograms on him and under the Plate
conditions Guntantes will carry 56 kilograms,
which is well down on his recent weights.”
Ross cannot split pair
Trainer Les Ross does not believe there is much
between Mishani Hustler (Exceedingly Good)
and River Racer (Hidden Dragon), who will
take each other on in today’s Henzells Open
Handicap (1000m) at the Sunshine Coast.
Mishani Hustler is one of the favourites for
the race and River Racer is at double figures,
but Ross believes they should be closer in the
market. Two weeks ago, the pair met in an open
handicap at Doomben, with Mishani Hustler
winning and River River running fifth. “I said
before that race there was nothing between and
luck would tell the tale,” Ross said. “As it turned
out Mishani got a good run in front and River
Racer had no luck. There was only a length
between them at the finish. Luck will probably
make the difference again. It is a good race on
Saturday and it will give us an idea where we are
for the winter.”
Sizzlepel possible Oaks fillyTrainer Bryan Guy is looking well ahead at
targets for his exciting filly Sizzlepel (Sizzling),
who claimed her second win in less than a week
yesterday. She made it two wins in five days when
she made the running in the 2YO Handicap
(1400m) at the Gold Coast metropolitan meeting.
Guy, who trains in partnership with his son
Daniel, originally planned to spell Sizzlepel after
her latest win. “But she did so well we decided to
give her a chance to win a metropolitan standard
race today,” Guy said. “She can go for a spell now
and I think you will see a very nice three-year-old.
She has done all of this after coming straight from
the breakers. I know it is a long way off but I think
she might even make a Queensland Oaks filly
next year.”
Gelded More Sundays wins jump outMore Sundays (Fastnet Rock), out of eight-
time Group 1 winner More Joyous, prepared
for his imminent return to the racetrack with
an impressive jump-out win over 800 metres
at Flemington yesterday. More Sundays has
been gelded since his last campaign after
his fifth unplaced metropolitan run from as
many starts at Flemington last December for
David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig. It is
hoped the gelding operation will turned him
around, having finished third in an 800-metre
Flemington jumpout on April 17 before winning
yesterday at Flemington ahead of Godolphin’s
sprinter Gododdin (Exceed And Excel) and
2019 SA Sires’ Produce (Gr 3, 1400m) winner
She Shao Fly (Epaulette).
Killin poised to break throughThe ex New Zealand-trained galloper Killin
(Snitzel) seeks to win his first race in Australia
when contesting in the Lest We Forget 3YO
Maiden Plate (1200m) at Gosford today. The
three-year-old had two starts as a juvenile for
Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh, including in
the Wakeful Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) when
runner-up. He subsequently was transferred to
Kris Lees where he finished runner-up in the
Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m). A hip fracture
scuppered any hopes of a fruitful early three-year-
old campaign. “He went to Australia and ran well
in his first run over there and then he got injured,”
part-owner Bruce Perry told NZ Racing Desk. “We
were getting him ready for the good three-year-
old races in the spring and in August as he was
just coming up trialling he knocked himself in the
box. He got a greenstick fracture to his hip, but it
is fine now.”
Behemoth to have exhibition gallopLast year’s Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-
up Behemoth (All Too Hard) will gear up for
his racetrack return in the D.C. McKay Stakes
(Gr 3, 1100m) at Morphettville on May 2 with a
gallop at Gawler on Sunday. Trainer David Jolly
sees it as a chance to give his horse a trip away
from his normal routine at either the beach at
Goolwa or trackwork at Strathalbyn. “He’s had
a trouble-free preparation but ideally we would
have liked to have given him another trial,” Jolly
told Racing.com. “We were really happy with
what he did running second to Gytrash at the
Morphettville trials on April 9 and the intention
was maybe to give him a solid jumpout
following that at Strathalbyn.”
Redin yet to make prize-money callThe head of Thoroughbred Racing South
Australia, Nick Redin, will be monitoring
wagering data closely as he formulates a
plan for next season. Covid-19 has inhibited
economies from functioning worldwide and
the TRSA announced last month that it had
cut overall prize-money by 15 per cent until
June 30. Whether those prize-money cuts will
remain is undecided, with Redin saying more
data on the impact of the global pandemic was
needed before a plan could be confirmed. “We
are watching our wagering data very closely,”
Redin told Racing.com. “Obviously we have
announced cuts and we’ve only got 10 per
cent on general prize-money levels at the
moment. It’s something we have to monitor
continuously. We are forming our budgets at
the moment. I think we need more wagering
data, we are only three weeks into this and we
are coming into our best racing.”

Three Qld jockeys to switch zonesJockey Matt McGillivray will leave Queensland’s
south metro region after riding a double at the
Gold Coast yesterday. Racing Queensland
has divided the state into six zones with
metropolitan racing in the south centred on
the Gold Coast. The north is based mainly in
Brisbane. Jockeys elect to ride in one region but
they are allowed to change providing they go
into isolation for 14 days before resuming. Ryan
Maloney has also applied to move from the
south zone to the north from next month. On
the other hand, Robbie Fradd has completed a
week of isolation and will move to the south as
of next Friday’s Gold Coast meeting.
Munce Racing placed into voluntary administrationTrainer Chris Munce yesterday assured that his
operation will continue to function as normal
after his business, Munce Racing Pty Ltd, was put
into voluntary administration earlier this week.
The first meeting of creditors is scheduled for
10am next Wednesday. The former top jockey,
who has prepared 35 winners this season, said in
a statement to his owners: “We want to reassure
all owners that it is business as usual at Munce
Racing and that we will continue to provide the
high level of service that we always have. All
management and personnel remain working for
Munce Racing and there will be no changes in
this regard as there will be no changes with day-
to-day operations and the dealings you have with
Munce Racing. There will be no changes to how
your horse is trained and cared for. Our vision for
the future is that Munce Racing will become even
better and stronger.”
Former jockey Murphy trains first winnerGarry Murphy rode for four decades on the
Victorian circuit, but he added a win in a
different capacity at Werribee yesterday when
he trained his first winner. Murphy retired from
the saddle aged 56 in 2013 and debutant That’s
A Blast (Atomic) looks a horse to follow for the
former rider in his new caper. That’s A Blast
was heavily backed and the three-year-old filly
never looked in doubt, winning by almost three
lengths with apprentice Will Price aboard.
White’s coronavirus ban halvedQueensland apprentice Zoe White, who was
banned for six months for breaching Covid-19
protocols, has had her disqualification halved
on appeal. White became the first racing
participant Australia-wide to be disqualified for
breaching the regulations when stewards found
that she ignored a direction on April 1 to stand
down from riding and to self-isolate for 14 days.
She will be free to ride on July 2.
Vale harness great Gavin LangThe harness racing world is in mourning
after the death of the legendary Gavin Lang
yesterday after a fight with lymphoma. The
61-year-old drove 6303 winners throughout his
career, second only to Chris Alford, while he
won owners almost $50 million, taking most of
the biggest races in the sport.
NEW ZEALAND
Racing and training given green lightThe New Zealand racing industry has been given
the go ahead to resume training, trialling and
racing as the Covid-19 alert level has eased. From
Tuesday, the level will go from a four to a three with
many restrictions still in place. NZ Thoroughbred
Racing plans to be back holding meetings from
the start of July. At Level 3, the government has
advised NZTR that on-site work for the training
and racing of racehorses is permitted, on the
condition that all employers have a Covid-19
control plan in place. This involves appropriate
health and safety and physical distancing
measures for both staff and contractors. Racing in
New Zealand shut down a month ago and many
horses were spelled. NZTR has yet to announce
a prize-money structure for when racing returns.
Campbell makes most of lockdownRejuvenation is the name of the game for
Cambridge trainer Andrew Campbell. The
Group 1-winning trainer has relished the five-
week enforced break in New Zealand, care of
the Covid-19 lockdown, and is raring to get back
to training as soon as the government gives the
green light. “It’s been great,” Campbell said.
“I’ve loved it actually. On our property we’ve got
plenty of things to do and it is probably the first
decent break I have had in 28 years. Even when
you go away for a holiday it is normally only
10 days and hard to switch off and you need a
holiday when you go back it is that full on. I’ve
got a lot of work done that you don’t normally
get time to do and I am keen to get back into
it now.” Campbell relocated to Cambridge on
a seven-acre property in 2017 after 23 years of
training at Opaki in the Central Districts.
Stablemates heading to AustraliaAndrew Campbell also plans to send three
horses in his small stable to Australia to be
trained by Michael Hickmott at Murray Bridge.
The Cambridge trainer has earmarked Tibetan
(Shocking), Aqueduct (Dundeel) and Peloton
(Charm Spirit) to head to South Australia once
air travel restrictions between the two countries
are lifted. “Tibetan, Aqueduct and Peloton
are going to Michael Hickmott’s in Adelaide
once the airfreight is back up and running,”
Campbell said. “Our focus is on two and three-
year-olds. Michael has been a good friend for
a long time. We stayed with him when we took
Werther to Adelaide for the South Australian
Derby. They’re running for $40,000 to $60,000
every Saturday and if they’re up to it, it is only a
float trip to Melbourne.”
Grylls keen to get back to workCraig Grylls admits that a return to trackwork and
training next week will not ease the burden on
jockeys with the resumption of racing still more
than two months away but he will be glad to get
back in the saddle. “It will be difficult for a lot of
jockeys for different reasons,” he said. “I am OK,
but there will be a few that are going to get quite
heavy, so it will be tough getting their weight back
down. Even if we can resume trackwork next week
there is still not going to be any races until July.
That’s still a long time without any income. Even
though you get the government support package,
at the same time it is probably not enough for
people with mouths to feed. It is going to be
a bit tough, but we are not the only ones in this
situation, there are plenty of people around the
country that are in the same boat.”

Moloney to return to VictoriaJockey Patrick Moloney is the latest Singapore-
based rider to return to Australia while racing
in the Lion City remains shut down. Moloney
joins Michael Rodd in returning to Australia,
with the rider confirming on Twitter yesterday
that he had been granted a leave of absence by
the Singapore Turf Club and would be returning
to Melbourne to ride. He will be required to do
two weeks of mandatory quarantine before he
can rejoin the Victorian riding ranks.
Exultant carries great expectations into QEII CupTony Cruz expects an Exultant (Teofilo) victory
in tomorrow’s QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Sha
Tin but the veteran handler knows only too well
that in horse racing the unexpected can occur
at any time. Hong Kong’s champion stayer was
a short-odds favourite to win the Hong Kong
Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) last time out but found
trouble in running from an awkward gate and
could manage no more than a late-rattling
second to his front-running stablemate Time
Warp (Archipenko). “I’m very pleased with
him, I think he should win this race on Sunday,”
Cruz said. “It’s a smaller field this time so
Exultant will be closer in the run. He was too
far back last time and got into trouble, that cost
him and he just couldn't catch Time Warp – I’m
still disappointed with how that worked out for
Exultant, I think he should have won that race.”
Waikuku looks to bounce back against Beauty GenerationIf any horse can stop Beauty Generation
(Road To Rock) from winning a record third
Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin
tomorrow, the form book suggests it’s most
likely to be Waikuku (Harbour Watch). “He’s a
very good horse and he has done well already
this season so there’s no doubt he’s a winning
chance,” jockey Joao Moreira said. The Irish
import has finished ahead of the champion
four times this season, notably when successful
in the Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) and Jockey
Club Mile (Gr 2, 1600m), and again when second
over the big horse’s third in the Hong Kong Mile
(Gr 1, 1600m); but book-ending those results
are two telling wins in the Beauty Generation
ledger. “I hope he can bounce back,” Moreira
said. “My conversation with John Size lately has
been that usually when good horses do what he
has done they eventually come to a flat spot and
it could be the reason for his poor run last start.”
Wellington to dominate Champions Day undercardOne of Hong Kong racing’s exciting young
prospects will be out to grab a little of the
limelight from its established stars with
the undefeated Wellington (All Too Hard)
contesting the Class 3 Vengeance Of Rain
Handicap (1400m). Trainer Richard Gibson
has Rattan and Wishful Thinker entered for
their respective Group 1 assignments, but a
victory for the handler’s potential star would
indicate a bright future and even a possible
Four-Year-Old Classic Series campaign next
term. “Wellington has done very well - very
few horses win three on the trot in Hong Kong
but to make it four would be a great credit to
his name,” Gibson said. “We thought we’d
bought a very decent horse, the trackwork
reports were very promising in Australia.
But as we all know, there are a lot of boxes to
tick before they adapt here and he had a very
smooth transition into training and all of his
trials were very good pre-debut, so we were
crossing our fingers.”
INTERNATIONAL
British racing considering optionsA limit on field sizes with races restricted to
senior jockeys is just one of the features the
British Horseracing Authority is planning for
a phased return to racing in Britain. The last
meetings in Britain were on March 17, behind
closed doors. The plans for the resumption of
racing will be subject to government approval.
The Resumption of Racing Group said via
the BHA that it was continuing to work on an
outline program for the first two months of
racing’s return. The intention is to publish the
outline “within the next fortnight”, with the aim
of keeping the program “as close to normal as
practicable, with opportunities for all classes
and ages of horse, including two-year-olds”. The
fixture list will be restricted initially and field
sizes will have a maximum of 12 runners per
race.
German racing to resumeThe light at the end of the tunnel is nearing
for European racing as Germany is planning
to resume on May 4 following talks between
the racing authority Deutscher Galopp and
government officials. Germany will join France
by confirming plans to resume on May 11,
behind closed doors. An initial start of May 1
had been floated but had to be put back due
to restrictions. Deutscher Galopp president
Michael Vesper is, however, confident racing
will resume on the new planned date. He
said: “We have worked a lot in the past few
days and have been in constant contact
with governments, local authorities and the
racecourses since then. We are also deliberately
focusing on this week because we would then
have the advantage that not much else is
happening elsewhere, so we hope to boost
betting turnover.”
First French Classics rescheduled for June 1Racing in France will recommence with
four Group races on the opening day at
Longchamp on May 11, as France Galop
revealed a revised schedule following the
shutdown of racing due to the coronavirus
pandemic. All Group 1 races are to be
rearranged, starting with the unusual sight of
the French 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and
1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) taking place on
a Monday, June 1. Among other features, the
Prix Saint-Alary (Gr 1, 2000m) and Prix Ganay
(Gr 1, 2100m) will be run on June 14, the
Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (Gr 1, 2400m) on
June 28 and the French Derby (Prix du Jockey
Club) (Gr 1, 2100m) and Oaks (Prix de Diane)
(Gr 1, 2100m) a week later on July 5. The Prix
d'Ispahan (Gr 1, 1800m) has been moved to
July 19 and, for this season only, is open to
three-year-olds. Entries for the Prix de l'Arc
de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) will be closed in
mid-June although no official date has been
set yet.

International operation’s racing division also set for big day on the track in three states
BY TIM ROWE | @ANZ_NEWS
Emirates Park’s Bryan Carlson
has not ruled out the operation
acquiring interests in more young
stallions in Australia, three years
after the stud wound back its involvement in
the hands-on management of its Hunter Valley
stud farm.
Owned by His Excellency Nasser Lootah,
Emirates Park formed a joint venture in April
2017 with Aquis Farm taking over the day-to-
day running of Murrurundi property and the
investment in its own stallion portfolio.
It was announced earlier this week that
Emirates Park and Newgate Farm had formed
a partnership to stand the well-bred Tassort
(Brazen Beau) at stud this year for a fee of
$11,000 (inc GST).
“He’s a horse who has been on the radar
for us for a while. We were very fortunate to
purchase him off Godolphin and we were
very appreciative and thankful that we could,”
Carlson told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“They aren’t normally a seller of their
horses, but we were lucky enough to be able
to and hopefully it pays dividends and we will
make sure he gets every chance at stud.”
It was Carlson who identified Tassort, a
half-brother to Group 1 winner Alizee (Sepoy)
and Darley’s Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)
winner and young stallion Astern (Medaglia
d’Oro), as a potential candidate for Emirates
Park to expand its shareholding in stallions.
“We will always look to buy new stallions
and that could be with any farm,” he said.
“If it’s the right stallion who fits our breeding
program and we think they will be commercial
enough, we will definitely look at doing that.
“We still have 25 per cent in Santos with
Aquis. We’ve got Tassort now and we still have
Dream Ahead, but he doesn’t shuttle at the
moment. We are heading towards looking at
others as well.”
A long-standing relationship with Henry
Field, whom Carlson worked alongside at
Coolmore America’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky
earlier this century, led to the Emirates Park
general manager approaching the Newgate
Farm founder about partnering with Emirates
Park on Tassort who raced just twice for
Godolphin Australia trainer James Cummings.
Carlson said: “I have known Henry for a
while - since we were in America. We both like
the horse and he fitted into their stallion roster
very well. So, when we could buy the horse, we
talked to Henry … and the rest is history.
“He will get every chance at stud now. In
the first few days he has had 50 bookings to
him, plus the mares that are committed to him
(from Emirates and Newgate) so it would be
close to 100 mares already.”
Meanwhile, Emirates Park has two last-start
winning two-year-olds racing at Flemington and
Rosehill respectively today, the latter Formentera
(I Am Invincible) in the Clarendon Stakes (1400m)
in Sydney and Diala, a filly by their former resident
stallion Artie Schiller (El Prado), in the Anzac Day
Stakes (Listed, 1400m) in Melbourne.
Of Diala, who has drawn barrier eight in the
juvenile race, Carlson said: “She’s a lovely filly
who is a homebred by Artie Schiller who we
used to stand. She’s always been an attractive
filly and for her to pick up some black-type
tomorrow or even win would be great.
“I would say (today) will be her grand final
for this prep, then we’ll give her a spell and bring
her back for some of the races in the spring, but
we haven’t even discussed going forward (what
they will be).”
Further north, Vega One (Lope De Vega),
the Magic Millions Cup (RL, 1400m) winner in
January who Emirates shares ownership of, also
starts his Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m)
campaign at the Sunshine Coast today.
The Tony Gollan-trained four-year-old is an
acceptor for the Henzell’s Agency Open Handicap
(1000m) with Baylee Nothdurft taking the ride
after partnering him in a Doomben barrier trial
last month when fourth.
Carlson also reported yesterday that
Emirates Park’s 2018 Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr
1, 1200m) winner Estijaab (Snitzel) was in the
northern hemisphere and in foal to Frankel
(Galileo) while the Group 2 winner and Group
1-placed mare Shumookh (Dream Ahead) is in
foal to Darley’s Night Of Thunder (Dubawi).
All up, Emirates Park has nine high-quality
mares based in the northern hemisphere.
