Saturday Eastside Rehearsals January 19, 26 February 2 Camelback High School Piano Lab Conductor: Sharon Lovell Remember to set up music as per conductor’s instructions Number all measures and highlight all dynamics before the first rehearsal If page setup is three pages across, the page outside the notebook must be white cardstock so it does not fold over when on the music stand. This is a requirement, not an option brought about by years of experience. No regular paper and no manila folders as they look bad from the audience. JOHN HENRY MM - Half note = 106 This is a very familiar folk tune that people really enjoy hearing. Music set-up: Primo and secondo each have their own notebook with 5 pages, therefore 2 page turns. Practice the turns to play smoothly. You may put three pages across at either the first or last page if you prefer. There are no repeats - the music goes straight through from beginning to end. Primo: You come in with the melody at measure 4 beat 2. Come in with confidence playing mf with smooth legato phrasing, following all the phrase markings and rests. Please shape each phrase (soft, swell to louder, soft). When secondo begins the melody at m.24, soften down so they can be heard above you. The melody will return to you at m. 31. You will be back to accompaniment at m. 51, melody @ m. 60. After that watch the dynamics to the end. Secondo: You have the supporting accompaniment at the beginning that establishes the beat, so watch carefully. No pedal, but hold the bass notes for full value. You pick up the melody at m. 23, 50, and 79 so let it be heard. Be aware to play softer than Primo when they have the melody. Be prepared to lead into the key change at m. 59. Overall: Watch the conductor for the tempo – it will be conducted in “2”. Watch the conductor on the rit. molto at m. 95 to the end. Observe all rests and note values. Especially watch the bass line. Be sure your hands are in the correct octave. Watch for the loco markings where you go to where it is written. Be prepared for the key change at m.59. RACE to the PEAK MM – Half note = 96 - 100 This is a great piece by one of our favorite composers, Melody Bober. Music set-up: Primo and Secondo each have their own notebook with two pages each, no page turns. This makes the repeat from m.26 back to m. 19 really easy.
