Horses competing at distances of one mile or longer collected 46% of the purse money in

North America in 2016, a percentage that is up slightly compared to five years ago.

With many of North American racing's biggest purses paid in longer races, led last year by the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at 1 1/4 miles, perhaps it's not too surprising that races of one mile or longer awarded 46% of the purses in the United States and Canada in 2016 even though they only accounted for 35% of races run.

The number of flat races conducted in the U.S. and Canada has declined each year from 2011, but that decline has been a little less steep in longer races. In 2011 there were 49,629 flat races offered in the U.S. and Canada, but five years later, in 2016, that number was down 17%, to 41,376.

In looking at the decline, the reductions have not been quite as severe in route races. Even with reduced racing schedules, tracks have not cut their races of one mile or longer as significantly as they have cut sprints. Route races are down 13%; sprints are down 18.5%. As a percentage, the races of one mile or longer were up 2% in 2016 to 35% compared with five years ago.

The percentage of purses awarded in route races also has grown compared with 2011. The 46% of purses earned at the longer distances in 2016—some $523.7 million—is up from the 44% of purse money earned in longer races five years ago.

The commitment to longer races figures to be even more pronounced next year, thanks to the impact of the $12 million Pegasus World Cup

Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream Park on the numbers.Tom Robbins, vice president of racing and

industry relations for Del Mar, said the track tries to commit to running longer races even though there sometimes can be a push from horsemen to shorten up.

"We try to do our best to not fall into that trap of going shorter and shorter," Robbins said. "We try to maintain our route races as best we can. We encourage people to try to stretch out; we don't want to turn the sport into only sprints."

That said, Robbins said racing secretaries have to work with horsemen, and, in crafting condition books, need to adjust to the equine population available on their backstretch. Robbins noted that all things being equal, longer races generate more handle and fan interest.

"There is a lot of noise in the numbers a lot of times when you try to compare these types of things, but overall, you generally see a little bit higher handle in route races," Robbins said. "They tend to be more competitive, intriguing, and interesting. So, yeah, we're not just committing to these races as a matter of doing what's important for the game; there's a business aspect to it, too."

In 2016 the largest percentage of flat races for any specific distance in the U.S. and Canada was conducted at six furlongs. Those 10,022 races accounted for 24.2% of all races. Six-furlong races also awarded the highest percentage of purse money by distance at about $241.6

million, accounting for 21.3% of the purse money awarded.

Races at one mile ranked second in percentage total at 18% followed by races between five and six furlongs, which accounted for 13.7% of all races.

In terms of purse distribution by percentage, races at one mile returned the second-highest amount, about $199 million, or 17.5% of total purses paid while the third-ranked distance by purses paid was 1 1/16 miles, which returned about $153.8 million, or 13.5% of total purses.

The highest average purse payouts came at longer distances, influenced heavily by the lucrative stakes offered at those distances, which are otherwise relatively uncommon. Races at 1 1/4 miles ranked first in average purses at about $309,821 per race, as about $29.7 million was paid out in 96 races offered at this distance.

In breaking out races for juveniles, six furlongs was the most common distance at 23.7% of races conducted. As one might expect for 2-year-olds easing into racing, races shorter than one mile accounted for about 80% of juvenile races.

But even in this division, with lucrative stakes available for young horses that can stretch out, purses awarded in races of one mile or longer accounted for 30.9% of total purses. And, the most lucrative distances by average were the $184,480 at 1 1⁄8 miles (only five events) and $111,920 at 1 1/16 miles (157 races).

Daily Racing Form also adjusted the Beyer Speed Figure for the race to 116 from 119.

All of this led to Trakus reviewing the official time, landing on 1:46.83. The track record lowers the mark set by Lea, 1:46.86, in the 2014 Donn Handicap (G1).

The official timer for Gulfstream Park is Trakus, which said that during the Pegasus World Cup a minor anomaly in the underlying tracking data was experienced for Arrogate in the measurement cycle reporting as the horse approached the finish line. In a release, Trakus said, "On major race days, extreme environmental conditions are not unusual, and may impact reliable tracking performance."

Trakus spokesman Michael Ciacciarelli said "environmental conditions" refers to the number of vendors and broadcasters in attendance that bring in their own wireless systems. Ciacciarelli said before a big race card extensive efforts are made to make sure that those wireless systems don't interfere with Trakus, but sometimes the message isn't followed and interference occurs.

ARROGATE'S OFFICIAL PEGASUS TIME A TRACK RECORDBy BloodHorse Staff

The official time of the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) has been lowered to

1:46.83, giving Arrogate the 1 1/8-mile dirt track record at Gulfstream Park.

The initially reported final time of 1:47.61 attracted scrutiny after the inaugural running of the world's richest race Jan. 28. Clocker Bruno DeJulio said after watching Juddmonte Farm's son of Unbridled's Song beat a field of five other grade/group 1 winners by 4 3/4 lengths, the final time seemed slow.

DeJulio clocked the race off of replays and got times between 1:46.87 and 1:46.90. He took his concerns to Craig Milkowski, who oversees TimeFormUS speed figures. Milkowski then conducted his own review of the race and landed on the time of 1:46.87, which matches one of DeJulio's three times and is close to the others. After additional review, Milkowski landed on 1:46.53 as the final time for the Pegasus.

Trakus said such conditions existed during the record-setting Pegasus World Cup, which resulted in the live race final time being measured with an error of a fraction of a second (initially reported as 1:47.61). Although the chart was initially delayed and reviewed by Trakus' standard quality assurance protocols, the results were subsequently posted for all runners containing the incorrect winning finish time. A frame-by-frame video replay analysis showed the correct winning time to be 1:46.83.

Upon subsequent detailed review of the race performance data, Trakus determined Arrogate finished the race in 1:46.83. Updated charts are available on Gulfstream Park's website and through Equibase.

Gulfstream employs Trakus for its tracking and timing services. The Trakus system works by using a small radio transceiver outfitted on each horse, and a network of antennas and computing equipment located around the racecourse. In reviewing the race, Trakus recently completed a comprehensive review, working with Gulfstream Park management and industry partner Equibase.

"Trakus regrets the incorrect reporting of the finish time and apologizes for any inconvenience caused to our partner, Gulfstream Park, their fans and horsemen, and all industry stakeholders," Trakus said. "The company is continuously investing in its technology development efforts, training procedures, and racing operations support staff in order to provide the most accurate and reliable information possible to its racetrack partners and racing fans." CHAMPAGNE ROOM LIKELY NOT LAS VIRGENES FAVORITEBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Champagne Room will be in a unique position Feb. 5 at Santa Anita Park, where she'll make her 3-year-

old debut in the $200,000 Las Virgenes Stakes (G2).The champion 2-year-old filly of 2016 and the 14

Hands Winery Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner likely won't be favored. The horse of the moment, Unique Bella, off back-to-back freakish performances, should assume that mantle.

"We'll probably be (the underdog) and we embrace that challenge," said Champagne Room's trainer, Peter Eurton. "I think we're up to the task. She's been training as good as she ever has and it's going to be a great day for racing."

The Broken Vow filly's Breeders' Cup victory, although it was at 33-1, wasn't a flash in the pan. Champagne Room touted herself to her connections early in the summer at Del Mar and she won the Sorrento Stakes (G2) at the seaside racetrack in August.

As far as her development from 2 to 3 is concerned, Eurton says the filly has largely remained the same. The most successful strategy, Eurton says, has been to stay out of her way.

"She's always been big in stature, but her mind is

also in a good place," the trainer said. "But it was in a good place for the Breeders' Cup, too. When the gates open, she's comfortable with going fast, but if someone wants to go in front of her, that's fine. But we're not going to fight her."

Champagne Room may have a fuller résumé, but Unique Bella, a Tapit filly trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and owned by Don Alberto Stable, boasts one of the flashiest performances of the young year.

Following a 10 1/4-length, maiden-breaking win in November, Unique Bella romped again in her first stakes start, the Jan. 8 Santa Ynez Stakes (G2), this time by 7 1/2 lengths.

What Unique Bella hasn't done, however, is try a two-turn race, and that will change Sunday in the mile Las Virgenes.

Two turns were no problem for fellow Las Virgenes runners Miss Southern Miss and Mopotism, who both won at the distance in their last starts.

Miss Southern Miss' two-turn score came back in October and on a different surface, but was impressive in stakes competition. The More Than Ready filly trained by Keith Desormeaux went last to first to win the Surfer Girl Stakes on the Del Mar grass Oct. 10 and has put in a pair of bullet six-furlong works leading into the Las Virgenes, including a 1:12 4/5 drill from the gate Jan. 25. She is not inexperienced on dirt, however, and ran second to

Champagne Room in the Sorrento.Reddam Racing's Mopotism,

who earned a grade 1 placing with a third in the Starlet Stakes (G1) as a maiden Dec. 10, came back 20 days later to win a mile maiden special weight race by a half-length over next-out winner Spooky Woods.

The final entrant in the five-filly field is Mistressofthenight, a daughter of Midnight Lute who closed from seventh to win a 6 1/2 furlong maiden special weight race last time out Jan. 14 but has finished off the board in three two-turn tries. BH

CLASSIC EMPIRE PROVES PIONEEROF THE NILE'S DEPTHBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Producing champions unquestion-ably raises a stallion's profile. But

to stallion owners, how much is a champion worth in attracting breed-ers versus other statistics, such as the number and percentage of black-type stakes winners or graded stakes winners?

In the case of WinStar Farm's Pioneerof the Nile, getting a second juvenile champion in Classic Empire out of four crops to race helped erase a perception lingering throughout 2015 that the son of Empire Maker was a one-hit wonder.

Multiple grade 1 winner Pioneerof the Nile started out well as a sire, finishing second on the 2013 freshman sire list by earnings and had grade 2 winner Cairo Prince. Then came along American Pharoah, who was one of five graded stakes winners representing Pioneerof the Nile in 2014, but who attracted all the attention as his sole grade 1 winner. American Pharoah landed easy wins in the Del Mar Futurity and the FrontRunner Stakes (both G1) by a combined eight lengths, but missed the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) due to a bruised foot. He had done enough, though, to be named the champion 2-year-old colt for 2014.

Because American Pharoah was so dominant throughout 2015—sweeping the Triple Crown and

taking the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1)—and because Pioneerof the Nile had only one other North American graded stakes winner that year (grade 2 winner Midnight Storm), the breeding community began doubting whether the talent flowed deep enough among Pioneerof the Nile's progeny.

"Before Classic Empire came along, we were running an ad telling the story about Pioneerof the Nile because there was this misconception that he was a one-horse wonder," said Elliott Walden, president of WinStar. "Out of his first two crops, he had a horse entered in five out of the first six Triple Crown races for which his progeny (were) eligible.

"He had Social Inclusion, who had beaten Honor Code by 10 lengths and went on to finish third in the Preakness (Stakes, G1). He

had Vinceremos in the (Kentucky) Derby, who had won the Sam F. Davis (Stakes, G3) to become eligible. He didn't run well, but he got there. And we are not even talking about a horse who didn't make the Triple Crown races, Cairo Prince."

Early in 2014 Cairo Prince was a star in the making. After he won the Holy Bull Stakes (G2) by 5 3/4 lengths and earned a 4 Ragozin speed rating, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said he had extraordinarily high hopes heading toward the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).

"He had a couple of wide trips, some unlucky trips," McLaughlin said. "He got hung wide and finished fourth in the (Besilu) Florida Derby (G1), but he was sitting on a big race heading into the Kentucky Derby. He was a very talented horse."

Cairo Prince missed the Kentucky Derby due to an injured left front fetlock that forced him into early retirement. He now stands at Airdrie Stud, and his first foals are yearlings of 2017.

As WinStar worked to convince breeders that Pioneerof the Nile could produce a high-caliber racehorse, along came John Oxley's Classic Empire. Out of the Cat Thief daughter and multiple stakes producer Sambuca Classica, Classic Empire won at first asking at Churchill Downs and followed up with his first graded stakes win in the Bashford Manor Stakes (G3) in his second start. He went on to win the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (both

G1). The only blemish on his record came in the Hopeful Stakes (G1) when he wheeled at the start and dumped his rider.

Classic Empire was the unanimous choice for juvenile champion male. He will make his sophomore debut in the Feb. 4 Lambholm South Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park.

"With Pioneerof the Nile, getting that second juvenile champion was really important," Walden said. "He has been able to back up what we had been saying with another champion in the first opportunity after American Pharoah.

"Pioneerof the Nile is able to get the caliber of horse everyone is looking for, and the chance to have a Derby horse. We bred 18 mares to Pioneerof the Nile last year because we believe in him. Now the market believes in him." BH

DERBY TRAIL NEXT FOR BATTALION RUNNERBy BloodHorse Staff

St. Elias Stable's Battalion Runner won impressively for the second consecutive time during the Gulf-

stream Park championship meet, capturing the featured eighth race Feb. 3.

The 3-year-old son of Unbridled's Song turned heads Dec. 31, winning a maiden race by 8 3/4 lengths. Trainer Todd Pletcher said the colt will start next in a stakes race on the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) trail.

"I think everything is in play," he said. "Part of the reason we ran here was because it was more of a methodical step and made sense, and by running this weekend it kind of left everything in play."

Battalion Runner, ridden by John Velazquez, edged away from pacesetter Beasley in the stretch to post a 1 1/4-length victory in the 1 1/16-mile dirt race. Beasley finished 7 3/4 lengths clear of the third-place finisher, Painter's Rags.

The final time was 1:43.37 on a fast track."I thought it was a good effort—first time around two

turns and second start off of a long layoff," Pletcher said. "I think we got what we wanted. The time seems solid. They kind of got into a steady rhythm all the way around there. It looked like the first two were pretty well clear of the field."

Kentucky-bred Battalion Runner, acquired for $700,000 at the 2015 Keeneland September yearling sale, was the 1-5 favorite in the seven-horse field. BH

BIG DRAMA TO STONEWALL'S PRESTIGE STALLIONSBy BloodHorse Staff

Harold Queen's homebred Big Drama, the champi-on male sprinter of 2010, has returned to the farm

where his stallion career began and will stand the 2017 season at Stonewall's Prestige Stallions near Ocala, Fla.

The son of pensioned leading Florida stallion Montbrook previously stood at what had been Hallmarc Stallions at Stonewall Farm beginning in 2012 before shifting to Bridlewood Farm near Ocala for 2015-16.

Big Drama is half brother to grade 1 winner Sheer Drama and has three stakes winners from his first three crops of racing age, including his top earner R Kinsley Doll, and a grade 2 winning-colt in Trinidad and Tobago named Whisper Light. His progeny have earned more than $2.5 million.

For an introductory period, Big Drama will be offered to breeders for $7,500 live foal.

Out of the Notebook mare Riveting Drama, Big Drama captured the 2010 Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1),

besting a field that included eventual two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan. During that championship campaign he also won the Smile Sprint Handicap (G2) and was runner up in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap and the Forego Stakes (both G1). He retired with 11 wins from 19 starts and earnings of $2,746,060. BH

ARLINGTON MAKES CUTS TO BOOST OVERNIGHTSBy Bob Kieckhefer

Arlington International Racecourse announced Feb. 3 a 2017 stakes schedule that drops two races and

cuts purses for five more as part of an industry effort to improve overnight purses.

Stakes run in 2016 but omitted from this year's schedule are the Arlington Matron Stakes (G3), won last year by Flipcup, and the seven-furlong Chicago Handicap (G3), won last year by Sarah Sis.

Three races included in the Aug. 12 Arlington International Festival of Racing will have their purses reduced. The American St. Leger Stakes (G3T) drops from $300,000 to $200,000, the Secretariat Stakes (G1T) for 3-year-olds goes from $450,000 to $400,000, and the Beverly D. Stakes (G1T) for fillies and mares is reduced from $700,000 to $600,000.

The American Derby (G3T), run on Million Preview Day July 8, is trimmed from $125,000 to $100,000 and the listed Arlington-Washington Futurity on Sept. 9 will run for $75,000, down from last year's $100,000.

To download a PDF of Arlington's stakes schedule, click here.

"It's the initiative that the state racing board started to put more money into overnight purses," said Tony Petrillo, Arlington's general manager. "We took some of the stakes money and will use it to invest in overnight purse increases and more races."

The Illinois Racing Board earlier announced plans to donate $500,000 in "surplus" operating funds to purse accounts at the state's tracks—a move that remains undefined pending legislative action providing clear authority for the transfer. Petrillo said Arlington's actions would provide roughly a similar amount to boost overnight purses.

Petrillo did not, however, offer an estimate of average daily purses for the 2017 season, which opens on Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) day, May 5.

"Average daily isn't meaningful," he said. "Some days you have eight races, some days you have 10. What's meaningful is that with this change, horsemen will be running for bigger purses and we will be carding more races."

Overnight purses last season averaged just more than $130,000 per day.

The 2017 schedule totals 20 stakes worth $3.4 million, including six $50,000 stakes for Illinois-registered horses.

Efforts to divert funding to overnight purses are the latest stopgap measure put in place to keep the industry afloat while state government continues debating a gaming bill that would authorize slot machines and/or full casino operations at tracks.

The current version of that legislation is under consideration in the state senate but faces an uncertain future because of a complex political gridlock in the capitol. BH

RECORD SALES FOR TATTERSALLS FEBRUARYBy BloodHorse Staff

The Tattersalls February sale, held over two days for the first time, saw records across the board as it con-

cluded Feb. 3.The robust trade continued from where it left off Feb. 2,

with a 94% clearance rate sending turnover past 2 million guineas (US$2.65 million) for the second consecutive day.

The turnover for the sale of 5,710,200 guineas ($7,570,540) was more than double the previous February sale record set last year, while the average and median of 16,944 guineas ($22,464) and 8,000 guineas ($10,606) were both records for the sale, up 56% and 60% on last year's corresponding auction.

Leading the way on the second day was the Oasis Dream filly Dream Waltz, consigned from John Gosden's Clarehaven Stables, who was knocked down to Laurent Benoit's Broadhurst Agency for 105,000 guineas ($139,208). The filly was purchased on behalf of Australian owner Peter Maher who raced her classic-winning dam Valentine Waltz.

Maher secured the filly despite the efforts of agent Barry Lynch and Arrowfield Stud's Paul Messara and indicated that she would be shipped to Australia and covered.

Valentine Waltz was bought as a yearling at Tattersalls in 1997 for 75,000 guineas by Kern/Lillingston. She was campaigned by the Kirby Maher Syndicate and won the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French One Thousand Guineas) and finished third in the English One Thousand Guineas and in the Coronation Stakes (all G1).

It was another resident of Clarehaven Stables who was the second highest price for the day. Von Blucher knocked down to Salcey Forest Stud's Daniel Creighton on behalf of John Dance for 95,000 guineas ($125,950).

"He is for John Dance," Creighton said. "He is going into training with Rebecca Menzies as a dual-purpose prospect. She has done well and deserves a good horse."

Earlier in the day owner Andy Cosias secured the Dandy Man filly Dandyman Port for 75,000 guineas ($99,434). Trained in France by Eoghan O'Neill, for whom she won and was placed at Chantilly and Maison-Laffitte, the 3-year-old filly will be heading to the stables of Ireland-based Des Donovan.

"We wanted to buy a filly," Cosias said. "She should suit the soft ground in Ireland. We're very

pleased to have bought her.""The Tattersalls February sale has achieved

phenomenal growth in recent years and the 2017 renewal has taken it to a new level," said Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony. "As recently as 2010, the turnover at the February sale was less than a million guineas and the average price below 7,000 guineas. This year we extended the sale to two days for the first time and the turnover has soared to nearly 6 million guineas, more than double last year's record level, the average has reached a new record of 16,944 guineas, and even last year's impressive clearance rate of 82% has jumped to 90%.

"The obvious highlight of the sale was the 500,000 guineas ($662,897) paid for the outstanding race filly Easton Angel, another new record for this fixture, but the real feature of the sale has been the extraordinary depth to the trade in all sectors of the market and, as ever, the contribution made by overseas buyers from throughout Europe, the Gulf region, America, and as far afield as Australia.

"More six-figure lots than ever before demonstrates the enduring global appeal of quality bloodstock, but it is equally important that sales of this nature attract buyers at all levels of the market, and the sustained demand from start to finish has been just as gratifying as the individual highlights and the record returns." DOLLARS & SENSEwith Frank Angst

LOOKING FORWARD TO A SECOND PEGASUSBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

If imitation is the sincerest flattery, the launch of the AU$10 million Everest Stakes for sprinters

racing this fall at Royal Randwick has to please The Stronach Group.

The Stronach Group wrapped up the world's richest race, the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park. That record purse was fueled by 12 stakeholders paying $1 million each to ensure a race slot. The Everest will pattern itself the same way, with stakeholders paying AU$600,000 each.

The first Pegasus can only be considered a rousing success. It brought together the world's top two rated horses of 2016 in record-setting winner Arrogate and two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome. The day generated $40 million in handle, twice the amount wagered on last year's Donn Handicap (G1) card. And energetic fans were willing to pay $100 (a general admission ticket) and fill the Gulfstream facility.

That said, the event's future likely is in the hands of the 12 stakeholders who each paid $1 million to fund the lucrative purse. Will those 12 stakeholders, or others taking their spots, be willing to step forward after the majority of initial stakeholders—based on listed funding sources—lost more than half their money this year?

Many stakeholders are also owners who already commit money to the sport purchasing and breeding horses. Are they willing to continue to invest with the thought that numbers could improve for everyone?

The Stronach Group founder Frank Stronach said the first edition will be reviewed, and there likely will be changes, He is committed to keeping the race going.

"We want to continue to do the Pegasus World Cup. We're going to try to make this an annual affair. I think we learned from this race," Stronach said. "We've started with a great feeling."

As noted last week, The Stronach Group is hoping that television rights will help generate more revenues for stakeholders in the future. The initial overnight rating of 1.23, about one million viewers, was encouraging but would have to grow in order to have networks lining up to bid on the event. The 2016 Derby broadcast averaged 15.5 million viewers with 17.9 million tuning in for the race.

If 12 stakeholders readily step up, the format figures to be similar to 2017. Perhaps the shot at a $7 million windfall to the winner, not to mention purse payouts of $1.75 million and $1 million respectively to second and third; before the added revenue from the day is attractive enough to bring in 12 players.

If more push is needed, perhaps stakeholders could push for money from ticket sales and the track's share of pari-mutuel revenues from the entire card as opposed to the share of the $15.7 million wagered on the race (counting horizontal wagers ending with the Pegasus). BH
