Morning BriefingJenni to the fore in poignant success

Damien Oliver produced the David Brideoake-trained Princess Jenni (High Chaparral) with a sustained late challenge to secure a poignant success in the Alexandra Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) earlier on the Moonee Valley card.

Carrying the colours of the Ottobre family, who attach the ‘Jenni’ monicker to all of their string in memory of their late daughter, Princess Jenni ($12) secured the spoils in a thrilling three-way go having collared Angelic Ruler ($3.90) (Universal Ruler) by a neck in the shadows of the post, with a further short-head back to Arctic Shock ($19) (Shocking) in third. The winner of the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as the Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) against her own age group in November, Sunlight made the most of a featherweight when toppling her elders in the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) just under three weeks ago, but the $1.70 favourite graduated to weight-for-age company against battle-hardened sprinters with a three-quarters of a length success over Spright ($7.50) (Hinchinbrook), with a further length back to outsider Ellicazoom ($51) (Testa Rossa) in third.

Riding odds-on favourites in the natural pressure cooker of Group 1 contests carries a vast degree of responsibility and while not all winning rides are great rides, Currie was magnificent on Sunlight, who was electric from her wide barrier in stall ten, quickly finding her stride and contesting the lead with perennial front-runner Written By (Written Tycoon) as the bend approached.

What threatened to develop into a jostle for the pace became a one-sided affair as Currie grasped the nettle on Sunlight, obtaining the overall advantage at the 800 metres before putting the breaks on the nine-strong field, which had been reduced by two after acceptances due to the late defection of Shoals (Fastnet Rock), who had suffered a bruised foot, alongside Champagne Cuddles (Not A Single Doubt).

The mid-race tempo was very different to the early stages, the field clocking sectionals of 11.22 between the 800 and the 600 metres and 11.34 for the next furlong having blazed through the second 200 metres of the contest in 10.62.

By allowing the filly a breather, Currie filled up Sunlight before asking her to kick again on the turn for home and she scraped the paint when accelerating clear. The pack closed late, but they did so in vain, with this result ultimately sewn up by half-way.

Sunlight’s win was her tenth in 15 starts, while victory in the $500,000 feature also secured a tenth Group 1 success for Tony McEvoy, who cut a delighted figure in the post-race debrief as he predicted further progress from his stable’s brightest star.

“I’m in awe of her - what a star,” McEvoy told Racing.com. “She just rises to the occasion all of the time and she loves the pressure of this high-quality, elite-level racing. I’m so proud of her.

“It stands the hair up on the back of my neck to think of the level she is up with now and the great horses of the past. These are big-time races, but there is so much more to come with her. She could be one of the best of the best.”

Elaborating on the tactics employed on Sunlight, McEvoy continued: “Pre-race, the drums were beating quite a bit that Written By was going to lead at all costs and Fell Swoop has no other option but to go forward.

“I could have just seen us three-wide and on the outside of them, so Luke had a two-pronged attack - if she flew the start, like she did, he was just going to take the race by the scruff of the neck, but if they were all kicking-up we were just going to let them go.

“Luke has so much faith in her - he knows what he can and can’t do - and he rides her so beautifully, while I had such great confidence in the filly.”

McEvoy has earmarked a trip to Sydney next for Sunlight, who is set to head to the TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick on April 6, laying the foundations for a tantalising clash with dual The Everest (1200m) winner Redzel (Snitzel), Newmarket Handicap runner-up Osborne Bulls (Street Cry) and recent Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) winner Trapeze Artist (Snitzel).

Sunlight is a general $11 chance for the TJ Smith, with Trapeze Artist heading the market at $5 from dual $6 chances Osborne Bulls and Redzel, with the latter running in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) at Rosehill this afternoon.

Sunlight (3 f Zoustar - Solar Charged by Charge Forward) was a $300,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase from the Widden Stud draft by Aquis Farm, McEvoy Mitchell Racing and Blue Sky Bloodstock. She so far has amassed $4,133,950 in prize-money.

Third in last year’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) having previously won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m), Sunlight is one of three winners for Group 3 winner Solar Charged, who is a half-sister to stakes winner Causeway Queen (Giant’s Causeway) and the stakes-placed Brave Soul (More Than Ready).

Sunlight is a half-sister to the Group 3-placed Sheikha (Sebring) and a sister to current two-year-old Sisstar, a $600,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase last year by McEvoy Mitchell Racing and David Redvers Bloodstock.

Solar Charged, who was purchased for $650,000 at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale by Widden Stud and Qatar Bloodstock, has a yearling colt by Sebring (More Than Ready) and he will be offered as Lot 274 at next month’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Solar Charged had a colt brother to Sunlight born on October 25 but missed to Zoustar last November.

Zoustar is currently shuttling to Tweenhills Stud in the UK and is expected to have his service fee dramatically increased in 2019 for his southern hemisphere season. Last year, he stood for $60,500 (inc GST).

Fitting success for McKee and Consensus

There was a fitting result to the final race of the evening as the Stephen McKee-trained Consensus (Postponed) landed the Sunline Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m), a race named in honour of the champion mare whom McKee trained in conjunction with his father Trevor to win two Cox Plates (Gr 1, 2040m) among a myriad of Group 1 victories.

The New Zealand raider broke well under fellow Kiwi Michael Walker before taking a fierce hold as the field approached the first bend. Consensus dropped her head shortly after before looming up three wide entering the straight as I Am A Star (I Am Invincible) weakened through the pack.

The Group 1-winning mare then showed a tenacious attitude under the Walker drive to beat long-time leader Spanish Reef (Lope De Vega) by a neck, with Kenedna (Not A Single Doubt) lunging late to snatch third.

“She was actually heading up to Sydney and we had the Ranvet picked out for her but it’s just too wet in Sydney and so we looked at this race and thought we’d better go for it,’’ McKee told Racing.com.

Sydney’s loss was Walker’s gain, with the jockey confident the 2016 Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) heroine had more in hand than the winning margin suggests.

“She gave me a tremendous feel this morning,” Walker said. “I thought I was in a bit of trouble on the way to the start, I couldn’t stop her, I was a little bit worried and then the first 150 metres out of the gates I couldn’t stop her.

“I was able to get some cover and then she settled beautiful but she was just on one rein the whole way. In the straight I felt she had more to offer but she

was just hanging in so bad and I had to keep stopping and straightening her.”

The victory was also a poignant one for Walker, who in addition to his post-race debrief took the opportunity to pay tribute to those affected by the recent tragedy in his native New Zealand.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank Stephen McKee and Leo for bringing this mare over and giving me the opportunity to ride her, because as we’ve seen she’s such a classy mare,” he said.

“She’s bumped into Melody Belle and over 2000 metres she’s even better. It’s so awesome to win the race named after Sunline.

“I nearly got booed off the course on her (Sunline’s) last start when I nearly beat her. I feel so privileged to have raced against such an amazing mare, she represented Australia and New Zealand in such a big way on the world stage.”

Consensus (7 m Postponed - Kate Cross by Cape Cross) is one of four winning foals to race out of the Cape Cross (Green Desert) mare Kate Cross.

She is also a direct descendant of the Champion 3YO Filly Surround (Sovereign Addition), who has produced Listed winner Bowral (Danzatore) and the stakes-placed Watching (Marceau).

Yesterday’s victory took Consensus’s record to 11 wins from 54 starts and stretched her prize-money haul to $744,201.

Jenni to the fore in poignant successDamien Oliver produced the David Brideoake-trained Princess Jenni

(High Chaparral) with a sustained late challenge to secure a poignant success in the Alexandra Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) earlier on the Moonee Valley card.

“The good horses we call Jenni after our daughter, who passed away in 2015, and we hope to keep her memory alive by naming the horses after her,” Tony Ottobre told Racing.com.

“This has been an absolute thrill and it gives us something to look forward to because when you lose a child, it’s pretty well devastating.”

Given a confident ride by Oliver, who was securing a double on the card having previously landed the spoils on the Mick Price-trained Anjana (Sepoy), Princess Jenni was forced to overcome a difficult draw in barrier 13, dropping in towards the tail of the 14-runner field as the Dwayne Dunn-ridden Symi (Fastnet Rock) cut out solid early fractions.

Oliver accepted his fate and led deep on the turn for home, swinging into the five-path but ensuring his mount was granted one, sweeping run, and she duly obliged by picking up strongly to secure the $120,000 prize in a race whereby it proved beneficial to be ridden with some degree of restraint.

Princess Jenni became the 128th stakes winner for her late-sire High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells), one of 117 live foals produced in the former Coolmore shuttler’s final Australian crop, while this was her second win from four starts having landed a Geelong maiden (1400m) by six lengths in November. She had previously finished a four and a half-length seventh in the Kewney Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on her reappearance.

A $120,000 purchase by Tony Ottobre and Darren Weir Racing from the draft of Phoenix Part at the 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale, Princess Jenni (3 f High Chaparral - Glitzabeel by Zabeel) has now won $119,890 in prize-money.

Princess Jenni is the only-named foal out of the five-time winner Glitzabeel (Zabeel), who is a half-sister to seven-time winner Mulan (Savabeel).

The second dam, Glitter Woman (Fusaichi Pegasus), is a winning half-sister to the dam of Bahana (Elusive City), who was crowned champion stayer in Singapore in 2016, while the third dam, Precious Glitter (Danehill), won the Magic Night Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) in 1996.

She herself is a half-sister to Beauty Watch (Belong To Me), who finished placed in the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and the Arrowfield Stud Stakes (registered as the Storm Queen Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m).

Glitzabeel currently has a colt foal by Oaklands Stud resident Power (Oasis Dream), while she was served by Turn Me Loose (Iffraaj) in 2018.

Plenty of Cheer for The Snowdens

Less than twenty-four hours before saddling Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) favourite Cosmic Force (Deep Field), co-trainers Peter and Paul Snowden appear to have unearthed another blistering juvenile talent in the shape of Cheer Leader (Sniztel), who routed her Pearl Stakes (Listed, 1200m) rivals by five lengths.

Owned by Yulong Investments, Cheer Leader showed plenty of promise to finish third, beaten a neck, in the Festival Of Racing Stakes (Listed, 1000m) on her second outing at Flemington and she built handsomely on that form when powering clear of Mayan ($4.40) (Nicconi), with a further length back to Free Thrills ($19) (Unencumbered) in third.

Rider Damian Lane enjoyed an armchair ride on the daughter of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), who became the 88th stakes winner for her Arrowfield Stud-based sire, and he pointed to a recent course gallop and the application of first-time winkers as the reasons behind the marked improvement in form.

“She’s obviously taken good improvement from her first two runs,” Lane said. “She had a gallop around here on Monday morning and I think that did her good and tonight she was too good.”

“She had been a bit green in her first two starts and probably struggled in that sense, but the winkers probably helped her.”

As Listed victories go, this was as straightforward as they come for Cheer Leader, who broke nicely from barrier one, dictated matters from outside the 800-metre market and was in no danger of being headed thereafter, easing down 100 metres from the line to stamp herself as an exciting prospect moving forward.

A $300,000 yearling purchase from the draft of Milburn Creek from the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, Cheer Leader (2 f Snitzel - Gold Chant by El Moxie) has won one of her three starts, placing on the other two occasions and accumulating prize-money of $108,910.

Cheer Leader was one of 166 live foals conceived in the 2015 crop of Snitzel, who stood for $88,000 in that season. He covered 172 mares at $220,000 in 2018, while he has 36 lots set to go under the hammer at the upcoming Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Cheer Leader is one of eight named-foals, all of whom are raced and all of whom have won out of the Listed-placed El Moxie (Conquistador Cielo) mare Gold Chant, making her a half-sister to Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Amicus (Fastnet Rock).

Her dam is herself a half-sister to the outstanding Starspangledbanner (Choisir), a four-time Group 1 winner was crowned champion sprinter in Australia in 2009/10 when trained by Leon Corstens prior to landing the title of champion sprinter in Europe in 2010 under the care of Aidan O’Brien.

Gold Chant has a colt foal by Yarraman Park sire-sensation I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) having missed to Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) in 2017.

128 for High ChaparralLate Coolmore stallion High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) was provided with his 128th stakes winner last night courtesy of Princess Jenni’s (3 f ex Glitzabeel by Zabeel) fast-finishing victory in the Alexandra Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Moonee Valley. Trained by David Brideoake and ridden by Damien Oliver, the filly beat Angelic Ruler (Universal Ruler) by a neck, with Arctic Shock (Shocking) a further short-head back in third. High Chaparral died in 2014 at the age of 15.

88 for Snitzel

Cheer Leader’s (2 f ex Gold Chant by El Moxie) emphatic victory in the Valley Pearl Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Moonee Valley last night handed Arrowfield Stud stallion Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) with his 88th stakes winner. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained juvenile raced clear rounding the home turn and was well on top at the line, eased down by Damian Lane to score by five lengths. Snitzel has 36 lots set to go under the hammer at the upcoming Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. Click here to view the catalogue.

Ryan’s Fenderimpresses at the ValleyThe Matt Cumani-trained Ryan’s Fender (Helmet) made it two wins from as many starts

this preparation with a commanding success in the Simpson Construction Handicap (2040m) at Moonee Valley last night. The four-year-old landed the spoils by three and a quarter lengths from by Delightful Celyna (Helmet), with a neck back to La Belle Jude (War Chant) in third. Ryan’s Fender has won four of his eight starts, with one placing, amassing prize-money of $95,625.

Maher and Eustace pair in top shape for SlipperThe Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained pair of Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible) and Dubious (Not A Single Doubt) are reportedly in good order ahead of today’s Golden Slipper Stakes. "We wanted her here in tip-top condition so we thought just a soft trial after the Blue Diamond and straight in to the Slipper was ideal,” Maher said of Loving Gaby. “She's a big, strong filly and is still a little bit raw, but she's very good." The trainer added of the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) third Dubious: "I'm rapt with him. His Todman run was super. He didn't get the momentum into the race, but I thought he finished off really well. He's got the shades on, he's galloped well. Everything has been based around this race from when he won the Breeders' Plate and I think it's gone swimmingly."

Purple Sector chasing Guineas upsetThe Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) did not go to plan for John Thompson and Purple Sector (Pins), but the trainer is hopeful the colt can bounce back and produce a much better showing in today’s Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m). Thomspson is happy to draw a line through his last-start Guineas disappointment, where he sustained a minor injury in running. "He's going well," Thompson said. "He just didn't have any luck last start. He copped a bad check mid-race and it sort of put him out of the race. You just put a line

through that run. He nearly got put through the fence. He had a little injury from that but it was very superficial. One of his front legs - he just got galloped on - and it took a bit of skin off, but it was nothing really. If he runs up to his best, he's in this race."

Moroney pair shape up for Rosehill GuineasMeanwhile, Mike Moroney will be represented from both sides of the Tasman in today’s Rosehill Guineas. Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) placegetter Chapada (Bullet Train) is trained from his Flemington stable, while Arrogant (Ocean Park) has travelled from New Zealand for his Australian debut in this afternoon’s $600,000 contest. "I always thought once we got to 2000 metres that's when Chapada would start getting into it," Moroney said. "I'm not too concerned with his last start as Ollie wasn't that hard on him. He tried him but he had a tough run and he suffered a bit of heat stress as well. He's recovered well. He's a tough horse - he eats everything and a lovely horse to train."

New tactics for Nature StripChris Waller says the high-cruising sprinter Nature Strip (Nicconi) is likely to be ridden off the speed in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) at Rosehill today. The four-year-old gelding led throughout to win the Rubiton Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) on February 9 before being overrun in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) at Caulfield on February 23. He has drawn barrier ten in The Galaxy with James McDonald taking the ride. “We are trying to reinvent Nature Strip by not breaking horse’s hearts that he is beating and not breaking his own heart,” Waller told Racing NSW. “He can do it in lesser races but he can’t do it in Group 1 races so we are hoping to see that he can be as effective with a sprint at the finish rather than a sprint in the early and middle part of the race.”

Avdulla happy to be on GraffBrenton Avdulla is looking forward to riding talented colt Graff (Star Witness) in The Galaxy after the Kris Lees-trained three-year-old returns from a two-start Melbourne campaign. Graff, who won the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill in the spring, has finished fourth in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) and the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) this preparation. “He hasn’t been far away his last two up the straight,” Avdulla said. “He goes back to Rosehill where he’s run well before, the 1100 suits, soft draw, no weight on his back. I expect him to run well.”

Egg Tart also well placedEgg Tart (Sebring) will also be a key mount at the Golden Slipper meeting for Brenton Avdulla, who will ride the Chris Waller-trained mare in the Ranvet Stakes (registered as Rawson Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) today. Egg Tart has been left in the wake of her superstar stablemate Winx (Street Cry) in two runs from a spell but has performed creditably both times, finishing third in the Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and fourth in the Chipping Norton Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). Avdulla has been Egg Tart’s regular rider this autumn and feels the mare is nearing peak fitness. “I think she’s ticking over well,” Avdulla said. “She handles the cut out of the ground so that will suit her, the 2000 suits and if she’s anywhere near her best I expect her to run well.”

Todd happy to teamup with McDonaldFormer neighbours in New Zealand, dual Olympic gold medal-winning equestrian Sir

Mark Todd and jockey James McDonald, are joining forces in Sydney to try to win today’s Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) with British import He's Eminent (Frankel). "James has ridden him and he's been very happy how he feels," Todd said. "The 2000 metres in a Group 1 first-up having not raced since August, we're a little bit in the dark but we're hoping that he's in the right sort of shape for it. He's a very, very smart horse. He was a good two-year-old and was a very, very good three-year-old. His form as a four-year-old tailed off for whatever reason, but if we can have him back anywhere near his three-year-old form he's going to be competitive here."

Marsh undaunted by Autumn clashNew Zealand trainer Stephen Marsh will launch a two-pronged attack on the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) with last-start New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Crown Prosecutor (Medaglia d’Oro) and Group 1-placed colt Vernanme (O’Reilly) set to take on star colt The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice). The two Marsh-prepared colts join fellow New Zealand-trained three-year-olds Madison County (Pins), Surely Sacred (Rock ‘N’ Pop) and Arrogant (Ocean Park) in the race. Marsh is pleased with how his duo have settled in and the Cambridge horseman is upbeat about their chances. “They both travelled over really well - they got here last Saturday,” Marsh said. “They had a nice gallop on Tuesday and basically ran up the straight on Thursday morning. They’re in great order. I couldn’t fault them.”

Manuel scratched from Mornington CupA big weight and a wide draw has swayed trainer Tony McEvoy to scratch Manuel (Commands) from today’s Hareeba Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Mornington. Instead McEvoy will switch the CF Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) hero to Sydney for a start in the Star Kingdom Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday week. "Around Mornington you need to draw well," McEvoy said. "He hasn't got the speed to cross them at 1200 metres and he can't go back on that track with 61 kilos. The Star Kingdom fits in well with his programme so we'll head that way. The All-Aged at 1400 metres - it could be a nice race for him and if it's wet, it won't worry him."

The Lord Mayorsent north by WallerGroup 1-performer The Lord Mayor (Rock ‘N’ Pop) has arrived in Queensland to further boost the ranks of the in-form Chris Waller Gold Coast stable. The Lord Mayor will have his first start in the TAB Open Handicap (1500m) at Eagle Farm today. Waller has a strong hand in the race and will also saddle Jaminzah (Master Of Design), Veladero (Medaglia d’Oro) and Impasse (Sepoy), with the stablemates all drawing alongside each other in barriers nine to 12. Waller’s Queensland manager Paul Shailer said The Lord Mayor was an ideal type for Queensland staying races. “He obviously has a touch of class and had no luck in the Australian Derby, when he clipped heels, and while Saturday is short of his distance he should be competitive," Shailer said.

Harrison out to continue winning runJockey Tegan Harrison hopes to cap off a strong week in the saddle with a victory on the Chris Meagher-trained Divine Dice (Casino Prince) in the Goldmarket (Listed, 1200m) at the Gold Coast today. The race was postponed from last Saturday after stewards abandoned the remainder of the Gold Coast card due to the wet weather and state of the track. Harrison won on the gelding on his last start at Eagle Farm on February 2 and she hopes he can win again, following on from important victories this week for Brisbane trainers Rob Heathcote and Chris Anderson. “I have ridden plenty of winners for Rob but I got my first winner for Chris Anderson at Murwillumbah,” she said. “Hopefully it is pointed to getting more rides when they start their training partnership soon. It has been a good week and I’d love to finish it off with a win for Chris who has stuck by me.”

Doncaster the plan for KlugerA tilt at the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) awaits Japanese raider Kluger (King Kamehameha) who is settling into the quarantine facility at Canterbury having arrived in Sydney for The Championships. The colt, a Grade 2 winner in his native Japan, is expected to start ramping up his work in the coming days, with his trainer Tomokazu Takano due in town next week to watch him gallop. "He has settled in very nicely," Kluger's travelling groom Seiji Moriya said. "He is an easy-going horse so there's not much worry about travelling. He's eating well, drinking well. We're very happy."

Albury Cup meeting postponedThe Albury Gold Cup (Listed, 2000m) meeting in southern NSW was postponed yesterday after a heavy storm dumped 23 millimetres on the track in 20 minutes. Racing NSW stewards delayed the start of the meeting, and used a helicopter to hover over the rain-affected areas of the course in a bid to allow the track to dry out, but were forced to call off the second day of the two-day carnival as a sodden section of the track near the 800 metres was deemed unsafe to race.

Gow-Whyte horsetests positiveRacing Victoria has revealed that the Jenny Gow-Whyte-trained Anova Belle (Krupt)

tested positive for a prohibited substance the day she won the 1000-metre Benchmark 58 contest at Camperdown on January 19. RV Stewards received a report from Racing Analytical Services Limited confirming that the pre-race urine sample contained a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, Phenylbutazone, and its metabolites Oxyphenbutazone and Gamma-hydroxyphenylbutazone, all of which are prohibited substances in accordance with the Australian Rules of Racing. The RASL finding was confirmed by the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory. Gow-Whyte was informed on March 4 of the initial irregularity before also being told of the confirmatory finding on Thursday, with the investigation into the matter continuing.

Fitness test for NolenLuke Nolen faces a fitness test this morning before he is permitted to ride after having to forgo his mounts at Moonee Valley on Friday night following a fall at home. Deputy chief steward Rob Montgomery confirmed that Nolen had suffered a head injury at his home and when he attempted to put on his skull cap, there was too much pressure on the injured area. Nolen’s forfeited mounts included Ellicazoom (Testa Rossa), who was ridden by replacement jockey Craig Williams to finish third in the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). Nolen is booked for four mounts at today’s Mornington Cup meeting, including the ride on Self Sense (Street Sense) in the $350,000 Cup (Listed, 2400m).

NZB Karaka May Sale catalogue releasedThe catalogue for New Zealand Bloodstock's 2019 Karaka May Sale was yesterday revealed. The 240-lot catalogue will provide buyers with pinhooking and breeding opportunities, with the one-day sale scheduled for May 17. The catalogue comprises 154 weanlings, 18 yearlings, three two-year-olds, five racehorses and an allotment of 80 broodmares. Graduates of the May Sale have won 79 stakes races in the past five seasons including the brilliant last-start Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Yourdeel (Dundeel). He was a NZ$30,000 weanling purchase in 2017. The sale starts at 10am local time. To view the catalogue, click here.

True Enoughhas what it takesCo-trainer Andrew Forsman believes the lightly-raced True Enough (Nom Du Jeu) can measure up to the rise in grade in today’s Japan New Zealand International Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m). The five-year-old joins stablemates Camino Rocoso (Shocking) and Nicoletta (Savabeel) in the NZ$100,000 race. True Enough won four races in succession before finishing runner-up last start over 1400 metres at Hastings and he steps up to stakes-class racing for the first time. “I think he will measure up,” Forsman said. “Every time we raise the bar he keeps putting his hand up. While it is a handy even field, there are some classy performers and he is not really well off under the set weights and penalties.”

Tauherenikau testfor Hugo The BossThe John Bary-trained Hugo The Boss (Stratum) will be aiming to add a seventh win to his tally tomorrow when he lines-up in the LJ Hooker & McHattie Realty Ltd (1000m) at Tauherenikau. Bary elected to bypass last weekend’s Lightning Handicap (Listed, 1200m) with the five-year-old gelding in favour of Tauherenikau and he expects Hugo The Boss to continue his strong formline. “He has had a great season,” Bary said. “We were going to run him in the Lightning, but obviously the track just played against us, so we thought we’d hold him for Tauherenikau where we will get a better footing.” King Louis spelled Group 3 winner King Louis (Equiano) has been spelled by trainer John Bary with the aim of bringing him back next season for Group 1 races. The three-year-old disappointed when sixth in the Wellington Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) last Saturday and Bary said his runner was ready for a break. “I think he was just telling us he has had enough,” he said. “He is just so big and strong - he is 550 kilos and he just decided he was done, he wouldn’t listen to the rider, even with the Norton bit on. He is out in the spelling paddock, so whether we get an offer in the next few months when the permits come out (for Hong Kong), great, and if not, the plan is to get into some of the better sprint races where they go hard up front.”

Valuable filly scoresPearl Series bonus

At Rotorua this week, the Jamie Richards-trained English Rose (Makfi) became the latest winner of an NZB Pearl Insurance bonus when breaking her maiden status. She secured the Level B Bonus with the win, which rewards the owner with $10,000, the trainer with $1,000 and $500 to the nominator. English Rose is a sister to the 2015-16 filly of the year, Sofia Rosa, and is raced by the Te Akau English Rose Syndicate. She became the fourth winner of a bonus in as many weeks. “Fillies must be nominated when they are yearlings and entries are currently

being taken for fillies born anywhere in the southern hemisphere in 2017,” NZTBA chief executive Justine Sclater said. “I would like to emphasise that the series is open to all fillies, including those retained by their breeders, fillies do not have to have been sold at any yearling sales.”

Sanna and So aim to make history at ConghuaA new chapter in the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s 135-year history will be written today when the first exhibition race meeting at Conghua Racecourse will take place. Jockey Alberto Sanna heads to Conghua for two rides, but it is the Chris So-trained Smart Charade (Fastnet Rock) in the first race, the HK$2 million Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy (1200m), who will give him a chance at creating history. “The 1200 metres will suit him, the speed will be much faster, because over 1400m he raced a bit keen, so he didn’t finish off the race well,” Sanna said. “Last year I won on him over 1600 metres on

Derby Day, both of his wins were Class 4 races, now he’s up in grade, but we believe the 1200 metres will suit him better.”

Gibson rolls the dice with two-pronged Dubai raidGold Mount (Excellent Art) and Wishful Thinker (I Am Invincible) will board a plane to Dubai this morning with trainer Richard Gibson looking forward to testing his talented duo on the Dubai World Cup card in a week’s time. A first overseas venture aside, both horses are entering uncharted waters, as Gold Mount will step beyond 2400 metres for the first time when he takes his place in the Dubai Gold Cup (Gr 2, 3200m), while Wishful Thinker will get his initial experience of the Group 1 cauldron in the Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m). “We’re rolling the dice on distance but I’m certain if he was trained in Europe he’d have got to this distance (two miles) before,” Gibson said of Gold Mount, who raced as Primitivo when in Britain. “Ryan (Moore) rode him last time in Hong Kong and we were very pleased with the run. He’s just crying out for a longer trip and we have to give it a go.”

Estijaab, winner of last year's Golden Slipper SPORTPIX

The Golden Slipper is the greatest two-year-old race in the world. That’s an introduction you’ll read to many a story at this time of the year.

Not sure it’s entirely true given that Pierro, Sepoy, Miss Finland and Sebring are the only winners, in the past 20 years, who could be described (or I’d describe) as genuine superstars.

We can, here in this country, be a little myopic and a “lot” jingoistic. In the same time, I present you the following winners of the UK’s Dewhurst Stakes - Rock Of Gibraltar, Shamardal, Sir Percy, Teofilo, New Approach, Dawn Approach, Churchill, oh and another named Frankel. Not to mention last year’s winner Too Darn Hot who just might be freakishly good, like Frankel.

In truth, Queensland’s two-year-old features - the QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes and the J.J. Atkins, run late in the season and beyond 1200 metres like the Dewhurst, have better honour rolls than the Slipper.

So, the Victoria Racing Club might perhaps reconsider it’s mooted revamp of its Sires’ Produce Stakes. It’s been suggested that it be reduced to 1200 metres and elevated in prize money to challenge the Golden Slipper which has “been let go a bit by Sydney” according to VRC director Michael Ramsden.

Ramsden has said he believes there’s an opportunity for Flemington to stage a rival race to the Slipper as Sydney continues to pour money into other initiatives such as the $13m Everest and the $7.5m Golden Eagle across the spring.

His thinking is not invalid but I’d consider that the evidence of a race like the Dewhurst

would argue for leaving the Sires at 1400 metres but running it later in the season, in perhaps May or June. Then, I fancy, you would see a very special preview to the three-year-old classics race emerge.

Run early May, it would not directly impinge on Queensland’s two juvenile features and could add to the buzz generated by Victoria’s May racing carnival at Warrnambool. But late May would probably be better - perhaps on the same day as the raced named in honour of Ramsden’s father Andrew. The winner could go on to the J.J. Atkins.

However, I digress. The Golden Slipper - it’s not really even the stallion making race - not that there is legitimately such a thing. They’re stallion propaganda races. Stallion selling races. The Slipper honour roll does not include Redoute’s Choice or Snitzel or I Am Invincible or Written Tycoon.

The Golden Slipper - greatest or not?

Page 12: Saturday, March 23, 2019 Sun shines bright under lights of ......thrilling three-way go having collared Angelic Ruler ($3.90) (Universal Ruler) by a neck in the shadows of the post,

The Gr 1 Golden Slipper, which was first run on 6 April 1957, has undoubtedly become a great event in much the same way the Melbourne Cup evolved. Not necessarily the greatest race but a show-stopping event.

As I’ve observed before, a $3.5 million dash for skeletally immature, young horses remains an obscene notion for many - bar winning connections.

Like The The Everest or the All-Star Mile, there were sceptics aplenty when the Sydney Turf Club first mooted the idea of the Golden Slipper. The Illawarra Mercury, which has a long history of covering racing, described the the Sydney Turf Club's proposal to launch the Slipper as “naive and nebulous”.

“It's a safe bet that it will find its way into breeders' waste baskets,” The Mercury asserted. Fair to say it got that wrong.

Earlier winners of the race including Manikato, Luskin Star, Bounding Away, Sir Dapper, Toy Show, Baguette, Todman, Tontonan, Skyline, Sky High, Fine And Dandy and Storm Queen arguably gave the Slipper greater credibility than perhaps it has now.

Mind you memory plays tricks on us as it magnifies the glory of the past; and the race remains something of a holy grail; remains incredibly difficult to win and the studs will still be liming up with their cheque books should you have a good colt win it.

This year’s edition looks wide open and is further complicated by the prospect of a heavy track.

The market and the track conditions were not dissimilar last year when Estijaab led from barrier 14 to hold off the strong finishing Oohood by a head. This on pace win, despite drawing out, was not inconsistent with recent trends.

You’d suppose that the rain affected track might bring the “swoopers” into play but recent evidence does not support this. Only one of the previous five wet track Slipper winners drew wider than 11 and none of them swept way wide down the outside to win.

She Will Reign made her run inside; Mossfun hugged the rails; Overreach raced on the fence before easing out in the straight while Phelan Ready and Sebring both cut through inside horses to run on.

The fillies have generally stood out all season and may well do again in the 2019 Slipper. The Godolphin duo Tenley and Lyre, with seperate trainers (James Cummings and Anthony Freedman respectively), have the form on the board. Neither has seen rain affected ground but nor had Estijaab before last year’s success.

The emphatic Blue Diamond Stakes winner Lyre eased in the betting after the barrier draw but the evidence, outlined above, suggests it’s more what path you take in the run than the draw which determines the outcome.

It’s also popular to summarily dismiss the Blue Diamond form year in and year out but that’s a bit misleading. Since Sepoy completed the double in 2011, only five other Diamond winners have contested the race and three have finished first four.

I fancy Lyre should not be as underestimated as the odds say she is. Tenley could not have been more impressive in winning the Resiling Stakes. The best roughies, in my opinion, are Vincere Volare, Free Of Debt and Pin Sec.

As to the other races: Melbourne trainer Mick Kent chases a third Gr 3 Epona Stakes win, in five years, with Jungle Fish and she looks hard to beat. Kent won with Consommateur (2017) and Scratchy Bottom (2015).

The Gr 1 Galaxy Stakes has a history of producing a light-weight winner around the double figure odds mark and the horse who seems most likely, to fill that bill, this year may be the Joe Pride trained Easy Eddie.

YOU’D SUPPOSE THAT THE RAIN AFFECTED TRACK MIGHT BRING

THE “SWOOPERS” INTO PLAY BUT RECENT

EVIDENCE DOES NOT SUPPORT THIS.

A drop back in Class 4 company was the key to the return to winning ways for Reddot Rising (Nadeem) on Friday night.

The son of Nadeem (Redoute’s Choice) has always been a handy customer in that grade, recording the last of his three wins in such company in a 1400 metre event last July, but a push towards tougher opposition, including a stab at local Group 3 level in the Moonbeam Vase (Listed, 1600m) in November, has seen him struggle.

Trainer Saimee Jumaat’s decision to ease the six-year-old back a notch in Friday’s $50,000 Selangor Turf Club Trophy, a Class 4 race over 1700 metres, was met with instant rewards.

At the top of the straight, connections must have thought the gambit would not pay off, though. Leader Bangkok Boy (Pierro) looked to have stolen a march when he opened up to a commanding break with Reddot Rising spotting him around eight lengths in mid-division.

But once Vlad Duric got a wriggle on, Reddot Rising steadily ate the ground up down the centre of the track, with the issue soon put beyond any doubt when he swept past a punctured Bangkok Boy at the 300 metres.

Cash Is King (Tavistock) and the well-backed Bebop (Rock ‘N’ Pop) ran on well too, but not well enough to trouble Reddot Rising, who had two and one quarter lengths to spare from Cash Is King as he coasted to the line an easy winner.

Michael Lee @anz_news

Reddot Rising sets Saimee-Duricduo in red-hot form

Bebop was a short head away in third. The winning time was 1:45.56 for the 1700 metres on the Polytrack.

“He has been racing well and we found an ideal race for him tonight,” said Saimee.

“He’s a genuine horse who never runs a bad race. There is no reason why he won’t be right there again if he put him back in a higher-rated race.”

Hammered late to start as the S$14 favourite, Reddot Rising now races in Saimee’s maroon colours after his former owner George Tay recently passed away.

“It’s been well-documented the horse belonged to the late George Tay. It’s a nice tribute to him,” said the former eight-time Singapore champion jockey.

“The team behind me all know George as one of the best clients at the stable. I’m sure he’s looking down on us and is very proud of his horse.”

Duric, who has now partnered Reddot Rising to three of his four wins, said the tempo of the race was not to his liking 500 metres into the race, but he was luckily able to ride out those testing sectionals.

“There was a nice pace to the race, but at the 1200 metres, they went at a gallop that was too strong for him,” said the two-time Singapore champion jockey.

“I put his head down just to get him to relax and feel comfortable. I knew he would finish strongly, and it was a good effort from him to win the way he did.”

With his record now reading 23-4-1-2, Reddot Rising has taken his stakes earnings past the S$160,000 mark for Saimee.

Continuing their red-hot form, Saimee and Duric recombined in the next race, the S$20,000 Maiden Division 2 race over 1200m metres, to bring up a race-to-race double with short-priced favourite ($8) Stardice.

Analysis: Brilliant three-year-old filly Sunlight recorded her third Group 1 success with another wonderful performance, her tenth win (four placings) from 15 starts. She was quickly away and after working to find the lead, she travelled well, raced clear on turning for home and then held on strongly for a very good win. Spright settled back in second last place in the nine-horse field, tracking a quick tempo, improved behind runners at the home turn, switched out halfway down the straight and ran on really

well for second. Ellicazoom settled in seventh place on the rails from her inside barrier (1), got between runners at the home turn, went to second at the 150m and then fought well for third. Dothraki raced in fifth place, one off the rails, put in a bid on straightening and kept battling on nicely for (1.9 lengths) fourth, just in front of Fell Swoop who held on for (2 lengths) fifth after racing close to the pace (but deep) while Written By attempted to hold the lead from the winner, settled in second place but tired over the latter stages for (3.2 lengths) sixth.

Analysis: New Zealand mare Consensus scored a narrow but good win here, her third win from her last four starts and her sixth Group success in 54 starts. She had a good trip in fourth place, one off the rails, challenged at the home turn and finished best to score well. Spanish Reef, winner of this race last year, went to the front, was challenged strongly nearing the home turn and kept fighting gamely for a very good second. Kenenda raced in last place in the ten-horse field, got along the inner rounding the home turn, switched out halfway down the straight and then finished strongly for an eye-catching third at her second run back. Naantali raced in sixth place (tacking the eventual winner), moved up wide coming to the home turn, challenged at the 200m and held on well for (1.1 lengths) fourth while the South Australian-trained mare Blue Morpho raced behind the leader and then battled on really well for (1.2 lengths) fifth.

Analysis: Progressive David Brideoake-trained filly Princess Jenni advanced from winning a Geelong three-year-old fillies’ maiden (1400m) at her second start in November to taking out this Listed race at her second start since resuming. She settled near last from her outside barrier (14), tracked up (wide with cover) from the 800m, went deep nearing the home turn and then came with a strong late finish to grab a narrow but impressive victory. Angelic Ruler settled in eighth place (wide with cover), moved up well (deep) coming to the home turn, hit the front at the 100m but could not hold off the late bid from the winner to take second in a sound effort. Arctic Shock raced in seventh place (between

Analysis: After placings at her first two starts, the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly Cheer Leader scored a most impressive win in this Listed race. She showed good pace from her inside barrier (1) to lead, travelled nicely before dashing clear on turning for home. She then drew right away to score brilliantly. Tony McEvoy-trained

colt Mayan settled in last place in the nine-horse field after starting from a wide barrier (8). He moved up (deep) nearing the home turn and then ran on nicely to for second. Free Thrills was slowly away and settled near last on the rails before getting a split in the straight and running on nicely to take third in a promising effort on debut. The favourite Andrassay Avenue had a good trip in fourth place (between runners), was under riding coming to the home turn and then battled on for fourth.
