The crimes of the real Sodom and Gomorrah were not for its hedonism but its narcissism – these cities were to be condemned for their heartlessness. RABBI’S SHABBAT MESSAGE

This morning we read of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Our modern day language is often filled with this city or that city referred to as a “modern day” Sodom and Gomorrah: Las Vegas,

Monaco, Bangkok are some of the places we’ve given that name to, one time or another.

Bear in mind however that the real Sodom and Gomorrah had no modern casinos, artificial beaches or faux Eiffel Tower. The crimes of the real Sodom and Gomorrah were not for its hedonism but its narcissism – these cities were to be condemned for their heartlessness. The Sodom and Gomorrah

we read about in the Torah are remembered for their unwillingness to aid the needy, to care for the poor, to be sensitive to the pained.

The real Sodom and Gomorrah is remembered not for its pursuit of pleasure, flesh, or greed – those are simple pleasures we can criticize but excuse. No, our Sodom and Gomorrah is remembered for

its fear of people who are not like them and the violence they brought on them.
