By just after 3 p.m. today, the hype surrounding Camelot (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) will give way to reality as Derrick Smith=s exciting prospect is tested in the G1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster. Whatever the outcome, the build-up to today=s renewal was certainly sparked to life by a major gamble earlier in the week that forced the July 14 Leopardstown maiden winner into 11-8 from 5-2. AHe did it nicely first time out, he was very professional,@ jockey Joseph O=Brien told PA Sport. AHe=s had a nice break since then. He=s been brought along gently and he seems in good form. I ride him in all his work at home. You=d like to think that he has matured mentally as well as physically since his first run. The ground should be fine. As long as it=s not too soft, nobody can have a complaint--it should be beautiful.@ Aidan O=Brien brought the Sadler=s Wells pair Aristotle (Ire) and High Chaparral (Ire) here off maiden wins, and it is interesting that the two sons of Montjeu to succeed here, Motivator (GB) and Authorized (Ire), were also having their first runs in pattern company. He was under consideration for the GI Breeders= Cup Sprint before the injury was detected. AIt=s the type of injury that he could come back from, but it would require a good deal of time off,@ Fort told TDN. AThe horse is sound and happy. He=s certainly the fastest horse that Peachtree=s ever owned or campaigned.@ Fort continued, AHe=s a big, beautiful horse, and up to this injury, he had been extremely sound. THE PLAY AT THE PLATE A total of 11 Group 1 winners will enter the starting gate for today=s G1 Tatts Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, and the market is headed by Sheikh Mohammed=s 3-year-old Helmet (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), who gets a hefty pull in the weights as he tries his elders for the first time. The attractive chestnut completed a sweep of Australia=s juvenile events last season for his owner, with wins in the G1 Sires= Produce S. and G1 Champagne S. to complement Sepoy (Aus) (Elusive Quality)=s victory in the G1 Golden Slipper S. Helmet comes into this off back-to-back scores in the G3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude Sept. 24 and the G1 Caulfield Guineas Oct. 8. Both of those successes came from on or near the pace, and the withdrawal of Descarado (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) should make his life a little easier at the head of affairs this afternoon. Quality Over Quantity... George Strawbridge=s Fencing was the subject of asignificant punt himself when breaking his maiden inNewbury=s Listed Washington Singer S. over sevenfurlongs last time Aug. 13, and brings proven black-type form to the contest. AHe=s a nice horse who wasgoing to go to the Royal Lodge, but he got a nasty spoton his back,@ trainer John Gosden explained. AHe=s aprogressive horse. It=s a fascinating race, and we=llknow a lot more after. Fencing is very much anunfurnished horse who needs to strengthen and so maynot be quite as advanced as a couple of his rivals, buttime will tell.@ Jim Bolger has supplemented Zip Top(Ire), who carries the same silks of Sheikh Mohammedbin Rashid Al Maktoum as last year=s winner Casamento(Ire) (Shamardal). After winning over seven furlongs ondebut at Leopardstown June 9, he was sixth in softground when dropped back in trip for The Curragh=s G3 Anglesey S. July 17. Back with a late-closing thirdin the seven-furlong G3 Somerville Tattersall S. atNewmarket Sept. 22, he was in front of subsequent G1 Middle Park S. winner Crusade (Mr. Greeley) andListed Silver Tankard S. scorer Letsgoroundagain (Ire)(Redback {GB}) on that occasion. AWe liked his run atNewmarket and he was coming home very well,@ Bolgertold PA Sport. AWe think he=s come on since then. Hewas finishing off very strongly at Newmarket and thestep up to a mile should suit him. The form looks good. They are telling us the ground will be on the good side,so I=d be happy with that.@

Godolphin=s Encke earned his spot with an easy 4 1/2-length success in a mile maiden at NewmarketOct. 1. AEncke has done well since he won atNewmarket, and his last piece of work went verypleasingly--you could see the improvement,@ trainerMahmood al Zarooni said. AHe is a [full-brother] toGenius Beast, who won the Classic Trial at Sandownearlier this year, and I think that Encke is going to wanta similar distance next season. He is bred to be a mile-and-a-half horse, so a mile is not a problem for him as a2-year-old. He is taking on some progressive colts, andit looks like a very open contest. Most of them havesimilar profiles, and I am hopeful that he can run well.@

BHA BACK DOWN OVER WHIP; HUGHES BACKThe British Horseracing Authority yesterday announcedmajor changes to the new whip regulations, highlightedby the scrapping of the five-hit rule inside the finalfurlong on the flat. With several high-profile bans sinceits introduction last Monday and the move by RichardHughes to give up all rides after falling afoul of thefinal-furlong rule on two occasions, British racing'sleading authority has relented on some of the mostcontroversial issues. While riders are still only allowedseven hits in the course of a race, these can beadministered in the final furlong. Other changes meanthat jockeys will not lose their riding fee, just thepercentage of prize money if their offence results in aban of seven days or more. A BHA statement read,"The board is committed to the highest standards ofregulation in the sport and ensuring that BritishHorseracing continues to lead the way in matters ofequine welfare. This is a sport not without itschallenges, but they will always be outweighed by thesport's strengths. These challenges will best bemet--and are being met--by finding a common purposeamongst the sport's participants, and by putting thesport first." BHA Director of Raceday Operations JamieStier later added, "We haven't so much come to acompromise, we've acted as a responsible regulatorshould. We've listened and heard further from ourstakeholders during this week, we've then actedquickly in a measured, decisive way and we've goneabout implementing the changes as quickly as we wereable to. I believe there is a lot of misinformation outthere and I would say the rules were properly explainedto people. People are entitled to form their opinion andchange their opinion as matters progress, but theexplanation was full." The Professional JockeysAssociation issued their own statement. It read, "ThePJA is pleased that the BHA has recognized that thenew rules over the use of the whip did requireamendments, especially in regard to the limitations onthe use the whip in the final furlong and after the lastfence in flat and jump racing, respectively, as well as inregard to the forfeiting of riding fees. We are pleasedthat the impact and the effectiveness of the rules willbe constantly monitored, and jockeys will wish to befully consulted. There are still serious concerns aboutthe level of penalties for minor infringements of therules. A jockey could still be in breach of the rules andface a heavy penalty for using the whip in the bestinterests of safety and horsemanship. There are alsoconcerns among Jockeys about the way that the rulesmay impact differently on flat and jump racing.Discussions among jockeys about the amendments willcontinue today and over the weekend."

All penalties from last week which would not haveresulted under the new rules have been rescinded, which means that Christophe Soumillon now gets hisshare of the purse from Saturday's G1 Champion S.and that Richard Hughes will be able to ride Strong Suit(Rahy) at the Breeders' Cup. Hughes, who took theFriday opener at Newbury, was duly pleased. "It's greatto be back. I'm happy with the change and applaud theBHA for realising the rule that was in place didn'twork,@ he commented. AYou don't know if somethingworks until you test it out and they realized veryquickly it wasn't going the right way and they'vechanged it. The penalties are still very severe. It's notas much prize money, as prize money in Britain isdeplorable and we get about ,80 for riding a winner, but five days off can lead you missing ,2,500 in ridingfees with someone getting five rides a day. This is amove forward, but the penalties are still very harsh fora very minor infringement."

Daisy Devine captured three of her first five starts, including a half-length tally in the GII Fair Grounds Oaksin March, but had failed to make an impact in threestarts since. Off the boardin the GI Kentucky Oaks inMay and the GIII Iowa Oaksin June, she was switchingto the turf for the first timeafter finishing a distantthird in the Oct. 1 GII Indiana Oaks at HoosierPark. The bay was a rankoutsider, but lit up the totein a game effort. Up tochase In Step as the Darley filly cut out fractions of:47.72 and 1:12.50, the longshot was at the front-runner=s girth as they came around the bend and intothe lane. It looked like In Step might have enough in thetank to get home first, but Daisy Devine surged past inthe final strides to prevail. Reiley McDonald is morefamiliar as the head honcho at Eaton Sales, but countsDaisy Devine as one of his success stories as a breeder. For the complete story, click here.

Undefeated State of Play Preps at Keeneland State of Play (War Front), who missed the GIII Bourbon S. at Keeneland after spiking a fever, wasback in action yesterday morning, working five furlongsin 1:01.60 over the Polytrack. Perfect in two starts, thedark bay was last seen taking the GII With AnticipationS. at Saratoga Sept. 1. The Team Valor Internationalcolorbearer clicked off fractions of :13.40, :25.60, :38and :49.40, and galloped out three-quarters in 1:15.60.AI thought he worked super,@ said trainer GrahamMotion. AHe=s been sick; he missed a work or two, sothere was a fine line between him doing enough andoverdoing it, since he=s only got one more work beforethe Breeders= Cup. I was very pleased with how itworked out. I thought it was about as close to perfectas it could have been.@ State of Play is scheduled toship to Churchill Oct. 26.

Juveniles Breeze at Churchill Downs A pair of 2-year-old Breeders= Cup hopefuls stretchedtheir legs at Churchill Friday morning. Take Charge Indy(A.P. Indy) drew owners Chuck and Maribeth Sandfordfrom their home in Chicago to Louisville, where he wentfive-eighths in 1:00.60, a bullet for the distance. Hisfractions were :12.20, :24, :35.60 and :47.60. Thedark bay has made all three starts on the synthetic, most recently running second in the GIII Arlington-Washington Futurity Oct. 8, but after witnessing themove, Chuck Sanford said, AI want to see him run ondirt.@ Adding that the breeze made it worth the trip, heremarked, AYou want to make sure he can handle thesurface he is going to run on. I had never seen him onan off track and, for the kind of money you are puttingup [$20,000 to pre-enter and $40,000 to pass theentry box], you=d better make sure he can handle thesurface he is running on.@ Take Charge Indy=sconnections did have an anxious moment when, just astheir colt crossed the finish line, another horseunshipped his exercise rider and veered toward him, butthere was no contact, and Take Charge Indy gallopedout unharmed. AWe dodged a bullet there,@ trainer PatByrne said. AMy heart is still pounding. He probablywould have gone even faster without that loose horse. It was scary.@ Also breezing under the Twin Spires, undefeatedRocket Twentyone (Indian Charlie) went six panels in1:15.60, galloping out seven-eighths in 1:29.80.Regular rider Eddie Razo Jr. was aboard. The winner ofthe Sept. 10 GIII Arlington-Washington Lassie last timeout, she goes next in the GI Breeders= Cup JuvenileFillies.

AShe went really well today,@ Razo said. AShe wasslipping a bit around the turns, but she got it together, and when I asked her down the stretch she reallyturned it up nice.@ Added trainer Tom Howard, AShelikes the dirt and she moves over it a lot easier than shedoes the Polytrack.@ Looking forward to their firstBreeders= Cup starter, Howard=s wife Kathy remarked,AWe pre-enter the 24th, and I keep looking at that dateto make sure we don't miss it. Hay Now: Bad Weather Drives Up Costs for Farms... From Hurricane Irene=s impact on the East Coast toTexas=s worst-ever drought, drastic weather conditionsthis year have presented unique challenges to farmsacross the country. Many operations are feeling the

pinch in the formof rising hayprices. AOur hay priceshave at leastdoubled,@ saidDanny Shifflett, manager ofLane=s End Texasin Hempstead, about an houraway fromHouston in thesoutheast cornerof the state. AIcan tell you an

$8 bale of alfalfa last year is now costing us $16 to$23. And that=s if you can find it. We=re fortunate thatwe=ve been dealing with the same supplier for 20 years,so we=re first on his list when it comes to availability.@ Farms in the Southwest have been affected on twofronts. Hay supply is down, and with demand steady, prices are up. Meanwhile, the hot, dry weather hasturned typically fecund pastures to arid grassland, reducing the amount of forage horses can take fromtheir paddocks. AWe=ve been feeding hay since the end of May,@ saidShifflett. AIn prior years, we never fed hay during thesummer. We used to have to cut down on grain feedingbecause our pastures were in such good shape and thehorses would pack on so much weight. Now we=refeeding hay and grain just to maintain them. We=refeeding roughly 60 resident mares--which is downabout 50% from a few years ago--and, with ourpastures depleted the way they are, we=re feedinganywhere from $600 to $800 a day in hay alone.@ In Kentucky, an exceptionally wet spring delayed thefirst hay cutting, while some areas in the upper mid-western portion of the country that supply hay for localfarms suffered record flooding. AIt=s a problem--and it=s always a problem findinggood quality hay,@ said Jim Robinson, who with hiswife Pam owns and operates Brandywine Farm in Paris,Kentucky. AIn the past four months, prices have goneup about 30-40%, and they=re saying they might go upa lot more.@

He added, AWe=ve always fed 100% alfalfa, and Idon=t know if we=d do this or not, but we might have to

go to a different type of hay andincrease the protein in our feed. Andfeed prices have got up a bit, too, because corn prices have risen some.@ In the Northeast, from New York andinto Ontario, bouts of extreme rain inthe spring and summer--including adeluge from Hurricane Irene in August--have affected the harvest. AWe=re anticipating prices risingthrough the winter,@ said Dan Hayden,

general manger of Vinery New York. AIt=snot too bad right now, we=re probablyabout $20 a ton more expensive thanlast year.@ That=s still about an 8% jump, and Hayden said even modest increaseslike that can wreak havoc on a farm=sbudget. "The bottom line on a farm is hay, straw, feed and payroll, so any time anyof them go up, it's going to affect thefarm in a negative way,@ said Hayden.APeople think that when you're charging$30-$35 a day that you're making money, but you'renot. You're just paying the bills.@

Hay cont.

The men agree that the hardest part of the rising hayprices is trying to avoid passing on the increased coststo horse owners, who are already struggling in toughfinancial times. AIt=s a dilemma, believe me,@ said Shifflett, who addedthat Lane=s End has chosen to not raise the day rate forits 60 or so resident mares. ABut we=re going to have todeal with those decisions. When we get from 200 to250 mares to breed in the winter, you have to try toabsorb the loss or transfer for the costs. You obviouslyhave to do right by the horses and keep them in the

best shape as possible.@ The extreme weather has beenespecially hard on equinesanctuaries, which rely not oncustomers paying a day rate, but ondonations from supporters. TheThoroughbred Retirement Foundation

(TRF) provides funding for and helps run a number ofequine retirement facilities, and is in the unique positionof having satellite farms across the eastern half of theU.S.--from Vermont to Oklahoma. Because of its scope, the TRF is perhaps feeling the impact more acutely thanothers. In a typical year, TRF farms in one region mightstruggle with weather-related issues while those inanother region fare better. ABut this year, there really hasn=t been one place inthe country that hasn=t been affected in some way,@said TRF Executive Director of External Affairs DianaPikulski. AFor us, it=s a big-budget increase going intothe winter.@ An increase of some 40%, Pikulski reckoned. AA largesquare bale of timothy alfalfa went from $7 a bale to

close to $10,@ she said. The TRF, whose fund-raisingefforts have already beenhampered in recent years by theeconomy, has been asking donorsfor help, but with mixed results. AOut in Oklahoma, especially, where the majority of ourpermanent retirees are, we=velaunched a special campaign,@ saidTRF Annual Fund Director LisaCraig. AThere=s been a little helpthat=s come in, but one thing thatwe=re hearing from a lot offoundations that typically supportus is that their money for the yearis already committed. That=s oneof the big challenges this late in

the year. The money=s just not there to donate. Sowe=re between a rock and hard place now.@ It=s a place that many farms are finding themself in. -Lucas Marquardt

SLOW DAY AT IFFEZHEIM Trade was subdued during the first session of BBAG=stwo-day October Mixed Sale which saw returns fallshort of last year=s main indicators at Baden-Baden=sIffezheim venue yesterday. It didn=t bode well for theAPremium Auktion@ section, a select draft of 75 lots toopen proceedings, when just seven of the first 26catalogued were knocked down as sold within the firsthour. Gestut Karlshof=s Hip 20, a yearling filly bySoldier Hollow (GB), was the most notable RNA--led outunsold at i40,000--during the early exchanges. However, the mood remained positive and trade pickedup soon after. It was not long before GestutSchlenderhan=s Hip 32, the 4-year-old gelding Solidaro(Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), headed the way when selling toBBAG=s very own Italian representative PeterFranceschini for i38,000. The Jens Hirschbergertrainee, who ran fourth in this term=s Listed SilbernesBand der Ruhr, is a full brother to G1 Gran Premio delJockey Club e Coppa d=Oro runner-up Salutino (Ger). Heis bound for a career over obstacles, and his price wasnot bettered throughout the day. Cont. p12
