World Day of Prayer for the Sick 11 AM Mass on Sunday, March 4th February 11th is the liturgical feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes. In 1992, Pope John Paul II announced that this

special time of prayer and sharing when we reach out, not only to those afflicted or suffering ill health but also, to the health care workers and chaplains of spiritual care to the sick. The next 3 paragraphs are excerpts from

To all of the sick, may this day of prayer bring you the comforting presence of the Lord. Your sufferings, ac-cepted and borne with unshakeable faith, when joined to those of Christ, take on extraordinary value for the life of the Church and the good of humanity. For you, health care professionals and workers, called to the highest, most meritorious and exemplary testi-mony of justice and love, may this day renew your spirit to continue in your dedicated service and generous openness to the profound value of the person, to respect for human dignity and to defense of life, from its be-ginning to its natural close. For you, Pastors of the Christian people and to all the different members of the Church community, for volunteers and particularly for those engaged in the health care ministry, may this World Day of Prayer for the sick offer encouragement to you to go forward with renewed dedication and service to those who are suffering. We expect the weather to be even warmer in March than February. So we invite health care professionals and workers, caregivers and all who are sick, if you are able, to attend the 11 AM Mass on Sunday, March 4th. At this Mass our Pastor, Father Hewes, will give you a special blessing. Be assured of our continued prayers that

Dear friends, Over seventy years ago a term entered the language that enjoyed a long vogue. In 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, a general laying siege to Madrid was asked how many columns (of

fifth column inside.secret force of sympathizers and guerillas who would aid him from within the besieged city. From that time the term Fifth Columnist ty, a country, or an organization.

left him All through the public ministry of Jesus we see Him confronted with devils, demons, false witness, slander, and finally a murderous conspiracy. It seems that Satan never let up till his apparent victory on Good Friday, which proved his undoing. At the very end of public written Revelation, Saint John in the series of visions recorded in the Book of Revela-tions, or Apocalypse, describes a frustrated and enraged Satan cast out of heaven and come to earth to

That means US, dear friend. You see, in Jesus the Incarnate Son of God, God and Man, he could find no to aid him in his siege of the Man from Nazareth. He could only peer at, and study, the outward human nature of this (to him) perplexing figure;; and attempt to lead Him astray by the standard temptations of power, fame, or fear. However, in us he finds a fifth columnist: what Saint Paul calls and also

was re-moved. Today we are reluctant to advert too much to this: a mistake in my opinion. Saint Paul in his own blunt language says that we are born In a mysterious way, every one born into the world inherits the

buys us back (the root meaning of the Latin redi-mere) from sin and perpetual loss. That redemption is first applied to us at our Baptism and is renewed, re-stored, and strengthened by all the other Sacraments we will receive in our lifetime. This personal salvation how-ever, is not assured to us. It can be lost. We retain within our very being, not Original Sin itself, but its lingering after-effects. We are like men and women who once having suffered a heart-attack and recovered always remain We are all sinners, even if not at the moment in any serious sin. We carry with us the damage of a sin-weakened nature: a limited and often confused intellect, a weakened will, and a mortal body. Catholic doctrine holds that while the human being is essentially good, he is prone to sin. THAT is the Fifth Column within us that the Devil finds;; and tries to work with. Our defects of temperament and character are his entry into our souls:

spiritual sloth. If we are ebullient and sanguine, he tries to make us rash and hasty. If we are able and self-assured, he tries to push us into pride, arrogance;; sharp-tongued and contemptuous

of others. If we are passionate and hot-blooded, he tries to make us angry, loud, gluttonous, drunk, lustful, addicted to

self-will and ease, and easily discouraged at failure.

February 26, 2012 The First Sunday of Lent 5

There are many such examples. In Jesus our Lord he could find no such Fifth Column. In us, well, we all know the truth that best describes us. Or, do we?

-

One of the purposes of Lent is to help us know ourselves. Our Lenten penances should ideally aim at our sins and defects as God sees them, which might be at variance with our own estimation. We might be giving up some little snack for 40 days;; while we really should maybe keep our mouths shut, stay off the phone, or turn off the computer for a couple of hours a week and eat the blasted cookies instead! Let us ask the Holy Spirit for the wisdom and courage both to know ourselves and to pen up that fifth col-umnist inside.

Often, the priest celebrant use incense at the parts of the Mass where it is indicated (the Entrance, Gospel, Offertory). This will provide even more variety in our liturgical life here at

Please join the millions worldwide who pray each day for the monthly prayer intentions of Pope Benedict XVI. Since 1844 the members of the Apostleship of Prayer have offered themselves to God for the salva-tion of souls, the Church, the intentions of all Apostles of Prayer, and the intentions of the Pope.

God, our Father, I offer You my day. I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys, and sufferings in union with Your Son Jesus' Heart, who continues to offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world. May the Holy Spirit, who guid-ed Jesus, be my guide and my

strength today so that I may witness to Your love. With Mary, the mother of our Lord and of the Church, I pray especially for this month's intentions as pro-posed by the Holy Father. Amen . FEBRUARY

MONTH FIVE - Developing Baby

Your spiritually adopted baby weighs over one pound now. His mother can feel his movement now. Before, he was too small for her to feel. Alt-hough he swam with ease in his watery world, he needed to be big and strong enough to kick hard against the outside wall and dent it - - the inside wall of the uterus has no feeling. We are mid-way through the pregnancy now. Your pray-ers have helped your baby's mother continue with her pregnancy and seek the help she needs.

ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY

This Society has many roles in the Par-ish. The primary purpose of the Rosary Altar Society is to praise and honor the Blessed Mother, to secure her patron-

age by the recitation of the Rosary and for the mutu-al spiritual benefit of all members throughout the world. They are entrusted with the care of the Altar;; the heart of every Catholic Church. Their duty is to provide and maintain a suitable dwelling place for Our Lord Jesus Christ. This is a labor of love;; no particular talents are required, just love and pride in the Church. They are a very active group, with meetings once a month. They run social functions, fundraisers and assist with Parish events. All ladies of the Parish are encouraged to become a part of this active Society devoted to Our Lady and our Par-ish.
