MUSINGS FROM MEG: What an amazing Super Saturday! It is one of my favorite events that we host here in Sauk County. I love seeing, hearing and feeling the excitement from our members and leaders. A quote was shared with me from Will Metzger “I’m sad that I have to wait A WHOLE ‘NOTHER YEAR for Super Saturday.” Wonderful presenters, fabulous volunteers, an amazing facility – all together equals a wonderfabulazing event! The Extension Office has been buzzing with many different projects. Now that we are fully staffed with Educators in Community Development, Agriculture, and Human Development, there are lots of different activities, events, and projects happening. A couple examples of other events happening currently are an Ag Survey taking place, a Lifespan conference, and SCIL. Look forward to seeing even more exciting things from Extension in 2020. Your patience and understanding with timelines is greatly appreciated. In order to help streamline requests from the 4-H program, members, leaders and families: please contact Meg at [email protected] or 608-355-3255 or 608-963-1889 with your 4-H related questions and requests. Whether that be copies that need to be made, curriculum to be pulled, room reservations for upcoming meetings, questions about 4-HOnline etc., please contact Meg first. Thank you to Circus City 4-H Club for asking me to attend and present at their January meeting. I presented on record books and developing goals. Everyone worked on creating SMART goals for at least one project. One 6 year 4-H member said – “I wish I would have had this (presentation) before. This made project records make so much more sense.” Club Leaders and Project Leaders, if your club or project group would like me to attend an upcoming meeting to answer questions, talk about project records, train your officers, or cover another topic, please let me know. GOAL SETTING AND PROJECT COMPLETION

4-H members should decide what they want to accomplish in the next year or “set their project goals”. Use the 4-H project record found on the Sauk County 4-H website to record goals for each project area and overall 4-H goals.

Some things to think about as you set your goals:

Clearly identify and write your goal. Set the deadline for achieving your goal and write the

date down. Identify obstacles (persons or things) that you must

overcome to successfully accomplish your goal. Who (people, groups, etc.) can help you successfully

accomplish your goal? What do you need to learn to successfully accomplish

your goal? How will you reach your goal? Steps to move you

from where you are to where you want to be. Why do I want to accomplish this goal? List the

benefits. Make sure you also have S.M.A.R.T. goals. Goals should be: Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. For example, “I would like to learn to cook a balanced meal for my entire family by spring break of 2020.” 4-H club members are recognized for setting and completing goals each year. At a minimum to complete 4-H yearly requirements, it is recommended that 4-H member should:

Attend a majority of club or group meetings. Enroll in at least one project; spend a minimum of 6

hours on project learning throughout the year. This includes attending a majority of project meetings, working on project goals, creating/developing/making an exhibit or caring for an exhibit animal, and completion of a project record.

Demonstrate a skill learned or knowledge gained by making an item, submitting an exhibit or project animal at a show or fair, or presenting a speech, report or demonstration in a group setting such as a club or project meeting.

Complete a project record for each project area to create a yearly record book.

4-H members are eligible to receive recognition for their project work when they complete their 4-H project record at the end of each year. Check with your Club Leader as to when Project Records are due for your Club.

4-H RECORD BOOKS

As a 4-H member, a record book tracks your growth in 4-H. Completing a 4-H record book is the completion of your project work. With record books you:

Identify your project goals and set priorities. Establish good organizational and planning skills. Develop responsibility in record keeping. Learn to evaluate success or learn from your mistakes. Tell a complete story of the projects you took.

A typical record book contains the following sections: 1. Personal page: Information about you 2. Activity section: Activities you did through the year 3. Club activity: What happened in your club this year 4. Project record: One for each project. Including

goals, what you learned/did, money you invested 5. A one-page project story for each project sharing

about what you learned. 6. One page pictures, certificates, etc. per project. Sauk County Record Book pages are available at: https://sauk.extension.wisc.edu/awards/

Check with Club Leader for record book deadline.

COMMUNITY SERVICE CORNER SIMPLE ACTS OF KINDNESS

Community service is an important part of the 4-H program. Research tells us 4-H youth are 3-4 times more likely to contribute to their communities compared to youth in other out-of-school programs (4-H Study of Positive Youth Development). Every month we will include community service ideas in the newsletter. This month we will focus on things EVERYONE can do that are Simple Acts of Kindness to spread goodwill… o Give a sincere compliment to a friend o Set aside money for a charity or two to support o Do something nice for a family member to let them

know you love them, like doing the dishes, helping with laundry, cleaning the bathroom.

o Say thank you to your teacher, your bus driver, your server.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL 4-H YEAR

Making the 4-H program successful takes intentionality all year round. New ideas and trying new things keeps 4-H fresh and exciting for ALL members, leaders and families.

ROOM ARRANGEMENTS

Rearrange the way you set up for a meeting. If possible, make a big square with tables and chairs. Have youth sit at the table, providing all youth with the feeling that there is equal voice for all youth. Sometimes it is intimidating for youth to look at a table of officers and think officers are the only ones who should be talking, since they are “at the table.” If tables are not available for everyone, put chairs in a circle.

PROVIDE TIME AND SPACE FOR FAMILIES TO CONNECT

4-H members, leaders and parents are always on the go, moving from one event to the next. At one of our last leader meetings, we talked about providing space and time for families to connect and check in with each other. Here are some ideas. Use the first 5-10 minutes of your meeting for families to gather. Have families sit together and give them a question or two to share answers with each other. Club and project leaders were given a list of “50 Questions to Get Your Kids Talking” from Her View From Home. Some of the questions are listed below… o What was something you saw that made you think? o Who did you play/spend time with today? o What do you know today that you didn’t know

yesterday? o Did you like your lunch? o Rate your day on a scale of 1-10. o Were you brave today? o What questions did you ask at school today?

These questions also work GREAT for roll call at the beginning of a club meeting.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF 4-H

In 4-H, the critical components of a successful learning experience are a sense of Belonging, Independence, Mastery, and Generosity. Throughout the 4-H experience, youth are engaged and participate in activities that encourage and provide growth in each of these areas. The 4-H Essential Elements are embedded through the learning experience. Creating a sense of ______

Belonging: Use get to know you activities at each meeting. having EVERYONE wear a name tag, o With get to know you activities go beyond just

name games. Encourage older youth to lead these get to know activities. Youth and adults should all participate.

o Have youth develop a club handshake, attention getter, or greeting to use with other club members.

o Have youth design a NEW club t-shirt.

Independence: Youth select their own projects and set their project goals as well as having opportunities to share their opinions and experiences. o Encourage and provide space and time for each 4-

H member to give a demonstration. If have a large club, break the club up into different corners of the room so a member is only talking to five kids instead of 20.

o Provide opportunities for as many youth as possible to share their input. Try using wall size post-it paper, sticky notes or note cards for youth to share what they think.

Mastery: Youth serve as project leaders or committee chairs and officers. o Pair up youth starting in 7th grade with an adult to

co-lead an activity for the club. o Once youth have lead a couple of activities, pair

them up with an adult to lead project meetings for the year.

o When youth feel comfortable, encourage and support them in leading their own project meetings or activities for the year.

Generosity: Participate in community service projects, or serve as a mentor/buddy for a new 4-H member. o Have younger members and older members be

Clover Pals. Clover Pals can work together during meetings, activities, on projects and much more.

o Come up with a club goal to do a community service project once every 2, 3, or 4 months. Think about something that can make a larger impact. Maybe focus on a certain community need and focus ALL of your community service for the year around that need. Again, think about new and fresh ideas.
