Mark dates down on your family calendar.

RSVP and/or fill out the forms for the items as soon as you receive the information. The longer you wait, the more likely you are to forget.

If you misplace your Clover Comments, no worries… o Copies are available in the Extension Office. o Available at: https://sauk.extension.wisc.edu/ o Electronic copies can be found on your family

screen in 4-Honline.

4-H PROJECT BOOKS

Once again in 2019-2020 in Sauk County, each 4-H youth member is eligible to receive one free project book per year. Each 4-H member can select their top three (3) project book choices and record them on the Curriculum Selection Form, which their club leader has. Every effort is made to have youth receive their top priority project book. However, orders are filled on a first come/first served basis. If a 4-H member would like more than their free project book, please contact the Extension Office. Additional books are available for purchase. If the Extension office does not have the project books you are looking for, they are available to order at: www.4-Hmall.org, unless there is another ordering source listed by the materials. Please check with the Extension Office FIRST for additional project books. We have a large the inventory selection.

A couple of things to remember about project books.

Please note that these materials are copyright protected and therefore cannot be photocopied.

Youth will use one project book for about 2-3 years.

Most project books cost $5.00. Some resource handbooks cost more. If you have questions about prices, contact the Extension Office.

GOAL SETTING AND PROJECT COMPLETION

4-H members should decide what they want to accomplish in the next year, or “set their project goals”. Use the 4-H project record found on the Sauk County 4-H Website to record goals for each project area, and overall 4-H goals.

Some things to think about as you set your goals:

Clearly identify and write your goal. Set the deadline for achieving your goal and write the

date down. Identify obstacles (persons or things) that you must

overcome to successfully accomplish your goal. Who (people, groups, etc.) can help you successfully

accomplish your goal. What do you need to learn to successfully accomplish

your goal? How will you reach your goal? Steps to move you

from where you are to where you want to be. Why do I want to accomplish this goal? List the

benefits. Make sure you also have S.M.A.R.T. goals. Goals should be: Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. For example, “I would like to learn to cook a balanced meal for my entire family by Spring Break of 2020.” 4-H club members are recognized for setting and completing goals each year. At a minimum to complete 4-H yearly requirements, it is recommended that 4-H member should:

Attend a majority of club or group meetings. Enroll in at least one project, spend a minimum of 6

hours on project learning throughout the year. This includes attending a majority of project meetings; working on project goals; creating/developing/making an exhibit or caring for an exhibit animal; and completion of a project record.

Demonstrate a skill learned or knowledge gained by making an item; submitting an exhibit or project animal at a show or fair; or presenting a speech, report or demonstration in a group setting such as a club or project meeting.

Complete a project record for each project area, to create a yearly record book.

4-H members are eligible to receive recognition for their project work when they complete their 4-H project record at the end of each year. Check with your Club Leader as to when Project Records are due for your Club.

4-H RECORD BOOKS

Everyone keeps records of one thing or another. As a 4-H member a record book is used to track what you have done and learned. Completing a 4-H record book is the true completion of your project work. Record books help you:

Identify your project goals and set priorities Establish good organizational and planning skills Develop responsibility in record keeping Learn to evaluate success or learn from your mistakes Tell a complete story of the projects you took,

leadership positions you held and activities you participated in

A typical record book contains the following sections: 1. Overview of 4-H year: Information about you 2. Activity section: Information about activities you

participated in throughout the year. 3. Project record: Include information for each project

you enrolled in for the past year. Including project goals, information about what you learned/did, money you invested, steps you took to reach your goals, a one-page project story – sharing about what you learned this year and pictures or news clippings that show your participation for that particular project.

Sauk County Record Book pages are available at: https://sauk.extension.wisc.edu/awards/

Check with your club Leader as to when project records are due for your club.

COMMUNITY SERVICE CORNER SIMPLE ACTS OF KINDNESS

Community service is an important part of the 4-H program. Research tells us 4-H Youth are 3-4 times more likely to contribute to their communities compared to youth in other out-of-school programs (4-H Study of Positive Youth Development). Every month we will include Community Service ideas in the newsletter. This month we will focus on things EVERYONE can do that are Simple Acts of Kindness to spread goodwill… o Without being asked, do a chore or a favor for a

family member to help make their day a little bit easier.

o Say “HI” to your neighbors. If you do not know them, introduce yourself.

o Hold the door open for the person behind you, and let them enter in front of you.

o Make an extra batch of holiday cookies and share them with a local needs based organization.

o Know someone who may be spending time over the holidays alone? Invite them over to celebrate with you. Or offer to spend some time with them.

o Let someone else eat the last slice of pie or cookie. o Find a fun project or cause you believe in and

volunteer your time. Websites like volunteermatch.org can help you find local place to donate your time.

o Tip your service professionals (barista, wait staff, etc.) a little extra.

o Pick up litter on the sidewalk while you come across it while you are out and about.

o Clean out your pantry and donate extra items to a local pantry.

o Offer to babysit for free for a friend or family member so they can have a night out.

o Animal shelters can get busy over the holidays, offer to foster (or adopt if you can).

o Pay for a strangers cup of coffee, bus fare, food order in the fast food line, snack at the vending machine, or groceries.

o Spread some cheer at work, church, or a gathering with friends by bringing snacks.

o Try to have an open mind: Read a book or article written from a different perspective, or listen respectfully (and without judgement) to someone who has a different opinion than you do.

o Buy a toy and give it to a local toy drive. o Clean out your closet and donate warm clothes,

coats and shoes to an organization that helps those in need.

o Collect used books from families and friends and create a Little Free Library.

o Send thank you notes to those who have inspired you this past year.

o Walk a shopping cart back to the front of the store.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL 4-H YEAR

The 2019-2020 4-H year begins on October 1. Below are some tips to help make it successful.

Provide Time and Space for Families to Connect 4-H members, leaders and parents are always on the go, moving from one event to the next. At one of our last leader meetings we talked about providing space and time for families to connect and check in with each other. Here are some ideas…

Use the first 5-10 minutes of your meeting for families to gather. Have families sit together and give them a question or two to share answers with each other. Club and Project leaders were given a list of “50 Questions to Get Your Kids Talking” from Her View From Home. Some of the questions are listed below… o Did you help anyone today? o Did you tell anyone “thank you”? If so, who? o Who did you sit with at lunch? o What made you laugh today? o Did you learn something you did not

understand? o Who inspired you today? o What was the high point (peak, cherry, rose,

favorite) and low point (valley, pit, thorn, least favorite) of your day?

o Was anyone in your class gone today? o What is something you heard that surprised

you?

Have families sit together at your meetings. Youth can lean on their parental units if they do not understand something during the meeting. In addition, the whole family can look at their calendar when activities, events and dates are discussed and decide together whether they can get involved.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF 4-H

In 4-H, the critical components of a successful learning experience are a sense of Belonging, Independence, Mastery, and Generosity. Throughout the 4-H experience, youth are engaged and participating in activities that encourage and provide growth in each of these areas. The 4-H Essential Elements are embedded through the learning experience. Creating a sense of ______

Belonging through: get to know you activities at each meeting or Club or Project group 4-H T-shirts.

Independence through: youth selecting their own projects and setting their project goals.

Mastery through youth serving as project leaders for the club, or serving as committee chairs or officers.

Generosity through community service projects, or serving as a mentor/buddy for a new 4-H member.

ANIMAL PROJECT UPDATES

LOOKING FOR ADULT LEADERS

Youth in Sauk County have expressed interest in participating in several team events related to animal science. Preparing for one of these events takes time, and an adult or two or three who are willing to lead. We are looking for some adult leaders who would be willing to help youth practice and prepare for these events. o Meats Judging - is a contest which tests the

knowledge of youth in placement of carcass and retail cut classes, carcass grading, retail cut identification and a quiz. State contest is typically on a Saturday close to Valentine’s Day.

o Skillathon – contest consists of a written quiz; around 8 different learning stations such as breed identification, feed identification, and equipment identification; as well as around four team activities such as demonstrating evaluation skills. State contest is typically on the first Saturday in March.

o Quizbowl - is a quiz competition where all the questions are about beef, sheep, swine, and meat goat topics and students use a buzzer in order to answer the questions. Teams compete in a double elimination format by giving oral answers to questions posed by a moderator. State contest is typically on the first Saturday in March.

For more information on all of these events: fyi.extension.wisc.edu/wi4haganimalscience/livestock/ Adults who are interested in helping with any of the above teams, please contact Meg at [email protected]

SAUK COUNTY MEAT ANIMAL SALE

EDUCATIONAL POINTS It is never too early to start thinking about earning the two minimum Meat Animal educational points that each youth will need to in order to be in the Meat Animal Sale at the Sauk County Fair. Meat Animal educational points are earned by attending educational events, workshops, clinics, classes, etc. All youth who hope to participate in the Meat Animal Sale must have two educational points turned into the Sauk County FAIR Office (NOT the UWEX office) by June 15. If you attend events outside of Sauk County, you must complete a Meat Animal Sale Credit Form. The Meat Animal Sale Credit form can be found on the Sauk County Fair website at http://saukcountyfair.com/exhibitors/sauk-county-meat-animal-sale/

STATE 4-H LIVESTOCK QUIZ BOWL AND

SKILLATHON CONTEST – MARCH 7 Livestock Quiz Bowl is a quiz competition where all the questions are about beef, sheep, swine, and meat goat topics and students use a buzzer in order to answer the questions. Teams compete in a double elimination format by giving oral answers to questions posed by a moderator. Each match has both an individual and toss-up question round. Skillathon contest consists of a written quiz and learning stations such as breed identification, feed identification, equipment identification as well as some team activities such as demonstrating evaluation skills. Participation in Quiz Bowl & Skillathon encourages members to develop a more complete knowledge of animals and related subjects. Both contests will be Saturday, March 7 at the UW Madison Animal Science Building. Registration is at 9AM. Cost for the contests is $10 per youth. Teams are encouraged to participate in both contests, as they will be occurring at the same time. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these events, contact Meg at [email protected] by Monday, February 17. For more information, check the Animal Science Youth Website at: https://fyi.extension.wisc.edu/youthlivestock/programs/quizbowlskillathon/.
