Hello fellow HCE members,

The fastest animal on the planet is the cheetah, life span 7 years.

The slowest animal is the turtle, some of which live 150

years….food for thought.

Get Ready, Get Set, Garden will happen on April 6 in the West

Square Building. Many of you have planned events and know how

much work is involved. Truly, we need your hands, your skills and

your smile to make this event an extra good one. The bleak and

sometimes bitter days of February/March are the perfect time for

creating a craft product or planning a donation to the Silent

Auction if you have not done so already.

Last issue, we were talking about clarifying and polishing our

image a bit by using the organization title: Sauk Co. Association

for Home and Community Education, “HCE”. At my local club

meeting, this point came up: “well, what do the letters H-C-E

mean to anybody, anyway?” This is where we can answer that

the E is for education/learning. Our mission is learning in a social

setting , sharing and then caring enough to work for change

where we see a need. Who could resist that?

When an extra special club or county program is planned, it is an

opportunity to broadcast and invite. This year, Spring Recognition

will be structured as an opportunity to bring a friend or two. They

will enjoy the evening of fellowship and learning. Spring

Recognition is a bit later this year: May 2. Save the date! Who

can you invite?

Take care of yourselves—we all need you.

MEMBERSHIP/ CLUB NEWS An Invitation; NVON

The NVON initials may not be familiar to everyone. The initials stand for National Volunteer Outreach

Network, Inc., an organization with which WAHCE is affiliated. NVON was founded in 1995 and, according

to the HCE handbook, has member organizations in 8 states, including Wisconsin. HCE dues cover

membership in NVON as well.

HCE members are welcome to attend NVON conferences. The NVON conference this year will be in

Springdale, Arkansas in July with the theme: Today’s Woman—Striving to Strengthen Her Community. I

can get you a registration form, or you could go to www.nvon.org if interested. Kathie F

The Mirror Lake HCE Club will again be doing the sweets table at Get Ready, Get Set, Garden. This year it is

going to be advertised as a bake sale so a variety of items such as pies, pan of bars, cakes or desserts can

be donated. Just remember to put the items in pans that you do not want back. Thank you in advance

for your donations. Money from the bake sale goes into the general fund to pay for the newsletter,

supplies, project lesson, and meeting expenses. Any questions you can call me at (608) 254-2448 or e-mail

Garden Seminar Silent Auction-April 6, 2019

This year we will be having a silent auction similar to the one that the Master Gardeners have done in the

past. To make this successful, we ask all members to participate. You can do this as a club and as

individuals.

We ask that donated items be new and clean. If anything is slightly used (books would be an example),

please specify. Some suggestions for donation would be: spring craft items, sewing items such as pot

holder sets, wall hangings, pillows, table runners or mats, lap quilts, or microwave dish cozies. Garden

tools, planting materials such as planters, seeds, and soil. Attractive pots with house plants or succulents.

Knitted or crocheted items such as pot holders, blankets, mitten and scarf sets or an infinity scarf. Painted

flower pots, signs, framed pictures, barn quilts. Themed baskets using things such as spa items, kitchen or

baking items, apples, wine, garden items, baby items, etc. Gift cards or gift certificates.

Use your imagination and come up with unique and fun items for the auction. We are also asking clubs to

contact local businesses for donations. Your center chairperson will be contacting you soon with the

names of businesses to contact so we do not have everyone going to the same business. Individual

members, please contact your center chairperson to let them know how you wish to help.

Please sign up via email or by sending the attached sign-up sheet by March 15th to one of the following

committee members. Contact the committee members to make arrangements to drop off items or deliver

them to the Extension Office in the West Square building after March 25th.
