JUNIOR GRADE: YEAR 3 - LESSON 22THE CHURCH SENDS PAUL

ON A MISSION(Acts 13:1-12)

While the Christians in Antioch were worshipping God, the Holy Spirit spoke to them. What did he say? (v 2)

The believers placed their hands on Barnabas and Saul (whose name was changed to Paul) and then sent them off to be missionaries.

What do missionaries do?

The two of them, sent by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.

What happened when they got there?Number the boxes to put the facts in the right order.

The proconsul, Sergius Paulus, was interested in hearing about the Lord Jesus.

They met a sorcerer whose name was Bar-Jesus.

The sorcerer was blind for a time.

Paul called the sorcerer a child of the devil and said he would become blind.

They travelled all over the island of Cyprus till they came to Paphos.

They preached in the synagogues.

Bar-Jesus tried to turn Sergius Paulus against the Lord Jesus.

The proconsul saw what happened to Bar-Jesus and believed in the Lord.

Tell how Saul became a Christian in four sentences. Use the words you are given to begin the sentences.

Now draw what happened when Ananaias did what God told him to do andwent to see Saul.

Try to answer these questions without looking up the verses. Where did Barnabas take Saul? (Acts 9:26)

Who did he take him to meet? (v 26)

What did he tell them? (v 27)

Where did Saul go to next? (v 28)

PRAYER SPOTBIBLE TRANSLATIONThere are still many people in the world who don’t have Bibles written in their own languages.

Many other people just have the New Testament, or short parts of the New Testament, in a language they can read. Imagine not being able to read the Bible for yourself!

Pray for those who are translating God’s Word so that men and women, boys and girls can read it for them-selves.

Pray for those who have recently been given the Bible in their own language for the very first time.

Pray for all those, like millions of people in our own country, who could read the Bible but who never bother to do so.

And pray that God will help you to read and understand the Bible day by day.

Decode the questions and answer them.

Draw arrows to show what is true and what is false in Lydia’s story.

Lydia shopped on the Sabbath. Lydia went to the riverside to pray. She met with other men and women. TRUE She was a seller of purple cloth. Lydia did not listen to Paul’s words.

She already worshipped God.

God opened Lydia’s heart.

Lydia did not believe what Paul said. FALSE She believed in Jesus. Lydia was baptised.

Lydia met with others to

worship God.

God spoke to her

that day at the riverside.

Is it important to meet with others to worship God?

Where and when do we do that?

How does God speak to his people today?

In Ephesus a silversmith named Demetrius stirred up trouble. He said that if people became Christians they wouldn’t want to buy their idol statues. He was quite right! He caused such a riot that Paul and his friends were in danger of their lives! The City Clerk told the trouble-makers to make their complaint in the correct way and not to cause a riot. The riot lasted for two whole hours before the crowd went home.

Now add the names of those you especially want to pray for between now and next Sunday.

Read Acts 19:32. It tells us that most of the people involved in the riot didn’t even know why they were there!

Remember that when you are watching the news and see vast crowds of people demonstrating about something. Of course, there will be those who believe in what they are doing. But there will also be many who are just there for the action.

Have you ever joined in with something just because you wanted to be the same as every-one else? Write about it.

It takes courage to be different and Christians sometimes have to take a stand for what is different. Can you think of an example?

Have you asked the Lord to be your Saviour? It is only he who can give you the courage to be different from the crowd.

Make a list of the reasons you can think of that God allowed Paul to be taken to Rome and kept there as a prisoner.

Do you see things happening in the world around you that sometimes make you wonder if God really is in control? Write down one of them.

It is often easier to see God’s control when we look back at things that have happened rather than at the time they are happening.

Ask your Sunday School teacher if he or she can give you an example of that from personal experience.

PAUL’S LETTER TO PHILEMON

This letter tells a story. Fill in the spaces to complete the story.

Onesimus was a _ _ _ _ _. P _ _ _ _ _ _ _ was his master. Philemon was a friend of P _ _ _. Paul thanked God in his prayers for Philemon’s _ _ _ _ _ in Jesus and _ _ _ _ for other Christians.

Onesimus had run _ _ _ _. He went to Paul. Paul calls Onesimus his _ _ _. That means that God had used Paul to help Onesimus become a Christian.

Paul wrote to _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ asking him to take _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ back into his home. Paul asked his friend to take _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ back as a _ _ _ _ brother. What do you think would usually happen if a slave ran away and was caught and returned? ..................................................................................................

Paul knows that _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ will do what he asks. He tells Philemon that he hopes to come and _ _ _ him. He asks his friend to get his _ _ _ _ ready.

Onesimus means _ _ _ _ _ _ . Paul tells Philemon that now Onesimus is a Christian his name suits him. That’s because God changes lives.

Now look up these letters and, in the second box, write a list of those written by Paul.

The story of Onesimus is really interesting. But does it teach us anything that can help us today. Can you find three lessons in Philemon that God is teaching you.

Three clues are given to help you.

What does the letter say about forgiving people who do us wrong?

What does the letter say about giving people a second chance?

What does the letter say about the difference God makes in the lives of those who trust in him?

Have you asked the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins and to be your Saviour?

Into this awful situation came one of God’s good men.

What was his name?

God sent Elijah with a message for King Ahab. Read chapter 17 verse 1 and write out the message in your own words.

Things were truly terrible but God was still in control.

Sometimes bad things happen around us but colour the words and remember -

GOD IS IN CONTROL.

(1 Kings 17:2-16)

The Bible is the Word of God and God cannot tell lies. That means that the Bible is true, even if parts of it seem unlikely to us. Did ravens feed Elijah? Yes, they did. God says so!

Let’s imagine that Elijah kept a diary of events.

IN EUROPE

When we read history we are reading how God has worked in the world in the past. So the word HISTORY could be written as HIS-STORY.

In the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries the church in Europe was in a mess. God made a number of things happen around the same time to make a huge difference. He brought a technical invention and a number of people together to create a new church that was based on the Word of God.

Put the columns from the top grid in the correct places on the lower grid to show what the invention was and who the people were.

Illustrate in colour the story of how the Reformation came to Scotland

Luther’s writings came to Scotland. Parliament passed a law stopping them being imported.

Patrick Hamilton learned about Bible teaching in Europe. He told people in Scotland about the Gospel. He was burned at the stake.

George Wishart toured the country preach-ing the true Gospel. Many people followed him to hear what he said.

John Knox was a follower of Wishart. He went to Geneva and studied under the great Reformer, John Calvin.

John Knox came back to Scotland. He had disagreements with Mary, Queen of Scots, who didn’t like the Reformers at all.

John Knox wanted the Protestant church to build a Christian school in every parish.

Congratulations on reaching the end of the Sunday School year. From what you have learned this year try to think of one example to put in each box.

A SIN TO AVOID

A LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED

AN EXAMPLE TO FOLLOW

A PROMISE GOD HAS MADE TO YOU

This is a good time to ask yourself the most important question of all.

Have you asked the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins and to be your Saviour? You may wish to use the yellow box to write a prayer asking him to do that for you today.
