EVENT GUIDE

Welcome to the one marathon you

won’t want to end. A race so rock ‘n’

roll, the mile markers are rock bands.

Because what’s the point of running if

you just want it to end? Here, you might

not break the tape, but the podium isn’t

the point. Life is a journey and running

should be a celebration.

not break the tape, but the podium isn’t not break the tape, but the podium isn’t

the point. Life is a journey and running the point. Life is a journey and running

REFUEL WITH CHOCOLATE MILK GET SPONSOREDEndurance athletes, trainers and sports nutrition experts all know the importance of an athlete’s after. Every athlete has his or her own after-workout or after-competition ritual, and your After can make a dramatic difference in how you feel and how you perform during your next tough workout.

That’s why athletes – from the most elite to the everyday – turn to lowfat chocolate milk as part of their recovery routine. Chocolate milk has what athletes need to recover after a hard workout, including:

• A natural source of high-quality protein to build and repair lean muscle.

• The right carb-to-protein ratio scientically shown to refuel exhausted muscles.

• Fluids and electrolytes – including calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium – to help replenish what’s lost in sweat.

If you’re a passionate athlete who grabs lowfat chocolate milk as part of your After, submit a video and get your friends and fans to vote for you to secure a spot on Team REFUEL.

Explain what makes up your personal after-workout ritual – and the role chocolate milk plays in it – and you could score:

• $500 sponsorship• Top notch Team REFUEL training gear• Chance to compete for Team REFUEL at the 2013 Rock ‘n’ Roll Edinburgh or Madrid Marathon & 1/2 • Chance to star in a national “got chocolate milk?TM” ad

$1 will go to the Challenged Athletes Foundation for each vote.–Mirinda Carfrae,

2010 Ironman World Champion

TM

You’ve made lowfat chocolate milk part of your After. Represent it by submitting a video at Rock ‘n’ Roll event expos or online today! Read the science, submit a video and check out elite athlete training videos at gotchocolatemilk.com.

THE HEADLINER CONCERT

Adelitas Way

Home School Valedictorian, the sophomore CD from Las Vegas quartet Adelitas Way, earns an “A” for execution, even managing to top the band’s forcefully compelling 2009 self-titled debut and its chart-topping single “Invincible.” On Home School Valedictorian, Philly-born singer/songwriter Rick DeJesus pens lyrics that are full of relatable pain and pathos in songs like memorably intense rock-ers “Sick,” and “The Collapse,” rife with heavy, edgy, melodic musicality, creating modern hard rock at once both eloquent and primal.

The last two years have been nothing short of amazing for Adelitas Way—playing at the 2010 Jets/Patriots game, touring arenas with bands including Theory Of A Deadman and Shinedown, their song ‘Scream” in Saw 3D , not to mention “Invincible” becoming the official theme song for WWE Superstars and used on the ‘CSI: Miami” finale. Yet while DeJesus’ gratitude, positivity and charisma is palpable, he often comments lyrically on the darker side of humanity. “The title Home School Valedictorian reflects the fact you meet a lot of people who are ungrateful for the things they’ve been given in life,” the singer notes. “When I think of a ‘Home School Valedictorian,’ I think of someone who’s spoiled and very into themselves, they think they’re the only reason that the world’s going around. I think that’s the opposite of what our band is; we’re very humble guys, we’re very easygoing, we’re very outgoing. The fact that I get

to wake up and play for fans and play music, I’m beyond fortunate. But I’ve met a lot of people who don’t see it that way.”

Like their songs, even the band name came via an emotional real-life experience—from an extreme encounter/adventure at an infamous Tijuana bar/brothel called Adelita Bar in their early days of band-dom.

In keeping with their all-for-one-and-one-for-all outlook, Adelitas Way won’t leave a gig until every waiting AW fan has met the band or gotten autographs. “I mean, we’ve played at festivals for 75,000 people, our first single (“Invincible”) broke top five at active rock, and it’s all because of the people who listen to us,” says DeJesus. “We’ll never forget that. We’re blessed.”

[1] GIRLFRIENDSTake a trip back in time to when all that mattered was having the right color of baby pink lipstick, big hair and most importantly, that “bad” boyfriend. Girlfriends has been entertaining audiences from Atlanta to Savannah since 1997 with their melodic three part harmony and songs from the 40’s, 50’s & 60’s.

[2] BURNING MANSIONSWhile individually operating in various bands and musical projects in the Savannah area, the members of Burning Mansions met and began crafting their wall of sound in a seemingly haunted house in historic Guyton, GA. Jonathan Murphy handles lead vocals and guitar, Jason Gecik sings and plays bass and Chris Heath plays drums. Burning Mansions combine elements of Arena Prog, Retro Soul and Seattle Grunge to create a unique sound for every emotion. Connect Savannah calls Burning Mansions “the best unknown band in Savannah.”

[3] FREE CANDYFree Candy is a Savannah, Georgia based Surf/Rockabilly/Punk/Garage Rock band with an ever expanding arsenal of original and cover songs. With their bizarre stage behaviors and attire, the three members of the band keep their shows ever-lively and always entertaining.

[4] ERIC BRITTEric Britt got his start writing and recording in the mid-nineties after becoming disillusioned with the university scene in Athens. He tried the ‘real life’ path but his creative soul just couldn’t sell out to a ‘normal’ life. Britt formed Hazel Virtue along with a handful of friends he met whilst still at UGA. After five years of consistently touring, the band went their separate

ways. Britt felt it was time for a change and made his way to Charleston, SC. Britt reformed Hazel with new members and a new sound, however always one true to his soul, Britt disbanded and retreated to Savannah to focus on just that. Britt’s new album, Greener is directly influenced by deep folk roots combined with his love of Indie music that became his tapestry during his decade touring.

[5] THE CITY HOTELThe City Hotel was born in Savannah in the summer of 2011. The band, consisting of Jay Rudd (banjo), An-thony Teixeira (bass), Cory Chambers (mandolin) and Aaron Zimmer (guitar) has emerged as one of the most engaging bands in Savannah. Melding a love of popular and indie rock music with a traditional bluegrass lineup, the band offers a unique, exciting and eclectic sound.

For many of you, this will be your first marathon or 1/2 marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.

If you have questions, please visit RNRSportsMedicine.com, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On…

TRAIN It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.

HYDRATE If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes For more information on hydration strategies, please visit our website..

SALT Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.

PLEASE Fill out the medical informa-tion section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have, medications you are taking or allergies to medications is extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all of our athletes like Rock Stars!
