    Monsters of Athanor

    Theres not a lot of detail given about the monsters, because the more detailgiven, the more your own mental image of the fantasy world is going to be locked into a

    single track. Were not going to say that giant ants are red, nocturnal, three feet long, andfond of eating elves. Because in your mind, they might be blue, diurnal, five feet long,and eat only plants unless theyre attacked. Details about monsters toss roadblocks infront of your imagination. Yes, details can also inspire the imagination, but were makingthe assumption that if youre interested in fantasy gaming in the first place, youve got agood imagination that doesnt need details about the size of a giant ant.

    Monster to-hit Rolls

    Monsters roll a d20 to attack, add their Hit Dice to the number (maximumbonus of +15), and if the result is equal to or higher than the defenders AC, the attackhits and does damage.

    Reading Monster Entries

    Armor Class: Though both standard and ascending armor class as listed,Savage Swords of Athanor uses the Ascending Armor Class listed inparentheses.

    Hit Dice: This is the number of dice (d6) rolled to determine an individualcreatures hit points. If there is a plus or minus next to the number, you add orsubtract that number from the total, only once. For a creature with 4+1 hit dice,youd roll 4d6, and then add one more HP.

    Total Hit Bonus: This is the number the monster adds to its attack roll to see ifit scores a hit. It is exactly the same as the creatures hit dice.

    Attacks: This entry shows you the number of attacks and the damage theyinflict. Monsters have 1 attack and inflict 1d6 damagebut there areexceptions.

    Saving Throw: This shows the target number, on a d20, the monster needs toexceed or beat in order to make a successful saving throw. This number isfound by taking 19 minus the hit dice of the monster.

    Special: This is just a flag for the Referee to remind him that the monster hasa special ability.

    Move: This number is the monsters movement rate, and its handled just asmovement rates are handled for characters.

    Hit Dice Equivalent (HDE): This is used to separate the monsters intodifficulty levels, so that when youre creating an adventure youve got someguidelines about what the characters can handle..

    Some monsters have multiple saving throws and HDE's listed. This is becausecertain monsters have a range of hit dice. Order is always from lowest HD tohighest HD.

    Allosaurus

    extremelystrong,filledwithmetallicbarbs,andreachesouttograband

    entangleenemiesupto10feetaway.TargetsstruckbyAmaramustsaveor

    beentangledandunabletomoveoruseanyweaponlongerthanadagger.Theirhairtakes2d6pointsofdamagetocut.

    Agiantfirebeetlesoilylightglandsglowwitharedglow,and

    Blackpuddingsareamorphousglobswithanacidicsurface.They

    Brutal,bipedalpackpredators,deinonychusare10feetlong,with

    enlargedclawsontheirhindlegs.Theyareswiftrunners,skilledleapers,

    ontheirheadsandlongfeathersontheirforelimbsandtails.Theytendto

    raidlivestockandarearealmenacetosmallcaravans.

    Dragons

    DragonsweremanufacturedinAncienttimesasservitorsofthe

    WitchKingsofYlum.Forgedofmagicandgenetictechnology,thedragons

    servedasguardiansoftheWitchKings,andeitheraslandoraerialcombat

    platforms.Durable,armored,anddeadly,eachdragonwasauniquebeing,

    capableofcenturiesoflifeandcunninglyintelligent.Mostofthedragonshavediedinthecenturies,buttherearethree

    dragonsinZamora.ThefirstistheTowerDragon,a100footlongblue

    serpentinecreaturewithlong,lithelimbs,ahugecrocodilianheadwitha

    mouthfilledwithfootlongteeth,andgreatcatlikeeyes.TheTowerDragon

    sleepsmostdayscoiledaroundtheTowerofWizardry,andisthepetand

    guardianoftheTowerofWizardry.Thedragoncannotfly,butbreathes

    lightningandisabletocommunicateempathicallyandtocausefear

    throughtelepathicbroadcast.Heseldommoves,butifmovedtoattackisanimplacablefoe.

    ThesecondistheGreatDragon,whoarrivedinZamorawiththe

    Overlord.Thisgreat,wingeddragonis80feetlong,withthreeheads.One

    breathesfire,onebreatheslightning,andthethirdbreathesfrost.Its

    iridescentgreenscalesareimpervioustomostweapons,anditswingsseem

    toblotouttheskywhentheOverlordfliesoutoverthecityonitsback.The

    GreatDragonsleepsforlongperiodsoftime,wokenonlytoservethewhim

    oftheOverlord.

    TheShadowDragonisaterroroftheundercity.Onlyfortyfeet

    long,theShadowDragonisamasterofdarknessandanecromancerofno

    smallability.Ruthlessandspitefultowardhumans,theShadowDragonis

    anenemyofVogMurandmaintainshisownundeadfortressbelowhecity,

    fromwhichhepreysuponthelivingandamuseshimselfbyhesufferinghe

    causes.

    Dromians

    muskyscents,thoughheyalsoseemtounderstandhumanspeech.They

    dressinconicalhoodedrobes,andservetheOverlordofZamoraasquiet,

    coldanddedicatedlaborerswhomaintainthecityandthetunnelsunderit.

    Girallon

    whenexposedtogreyooze(evenifthecontactisasbriefasthestrikeofa

    armor,thearmormustmakeanitemsavingthrow.Onlycuttingandpiercingdamagesagreyoozeitisimpervioustobluntorcrushingattacks.

    GreenSlime

    Greenslimeisnttechnicallyamonster,justanextremely

    dangeroushazardinundergroundtombsandothersuchplaces.Anymetal

    ororganicsubstanceittouchesbeginstoturntogreenslime(saving

    throw).Itcanbekilledwithfireorextremecold,andthetransformation

    processcanbearrestedbytheuseofacurediseasespell.

    Hssu

    AC:5(14),HD5+5,Attacks:tentacles1d6,Special:chemicalattacks,Move9,

    HDE6.TheyHssuexudeseveralchemicalsina10footradiusthattheyare

    immuneto.Thiscancauseanyoneofthreeeffects:charmperson,causefear,

    do2d6poisondamage.Anychemicalcouldbeusedatwill.

    TheHssuaredeserttraderswhotravelbeyondthelandoftheFive

    Kingdoms.TheytradeinthedrugSsharru,anopiatelikesubstanceknown

    forbothitsaddictivenessanditstendencytocausestrange,vivid,andoften

    propheticdreams.TheHssuarealiencreatures,withconicalbodiesending

    infourthicktentacles.Thetopoftheirconeendsinfoureyestalksandfour

    trumpetlikeears.Theyhavefourprehensiletentaclesmidwaythrough

    Monsters are not player characters, and their abilities are not at all determinedby the rules for player characters. A monsters abilities are determined by the Referee,not by any rules!

    Feel free to add wings, breath weapons, extra hit dice, wounded versions, orwhatever suits your adventure and your campaign. Toggle and tweak, imagine andinvent! You are responsible for the quality of the swords and sorcery in your game, notthe rules. So dont try to create monsters according to any sort of power formula.

    invokefearanddistrustinothersintheworld,anddosowithgoodreason.

    Muchofthetechnologyincorporatedinthesechangesseemstobeorganic,growningreatvatsanddrawingitsnutrientsfromthehost.Muchofit

    seemseitherorganicorlikeastrangemixoftentacular,pulsing,orjellyfish

    likeformlessness.Suchtechnologycanbestrangelybeautiful,butisoften

    horribletobehold.

    The Black Mirror

    Thismagicalswordisathreefootlongbladeofthin,blackandreflective

    glassymaterial.Thepommelismadeofbone,woundwithleather.Noone

    knowsheoriginoftheblackmirror,thoughmentionsofithavebeenmade

    inthechroniclesofthewarbetweentheFourGreatNations,wieldedby

    AkastheSlayer,championofYlum.TheBlackMirrorisanormalSword+1

    againstlivingcreatures.However,againstinorganicmaterials(metalor

    stone)oragainstplants,theweaponisasword+5doing3d6damage.In

    addition,theswordwillnegatethefirstspellofthirdorlowerlevelcast

    againstthewieldereachround.

    The Cloak of Shadows

    Thisfloorlengthblackcloakhasanornatesilverclaspwithanorichalcum

    stonesetinit.Pressingthisstonewillcausethecloaktoshimmerandthen

    reflectthenearbysurroundings,causingthewearertodisappearifheor

    shekeepstheclosedandthehoodpulleddown.Thisisequivalenttothe

    effectoftheInvisibilityIIspell.Thishasadurationof2d6+8rounds.Once

    theeffectends,thecloakneeds1d3daystorecharge.

    The Hand of Death

    ApowerfulAncientartifact,theHandofDeathisanornateonyxandbrasspistolthatfiresacold,blackboltthatcausesnoharmtoinanimateobjects,

    plantsorfungi.However,anylivinganimalstruckbytheraymustsaveor

    falltozerohitpointsimmediately.Acreaturethatsaveshasitscurrenthit

    pointsreducedbyhalf.TheHandofDeathmaybefiredthreetimesbefore

    recharging.Itisselfcharging,butregainsonlyonechargeperdayofnon

    use.

    The Iron Scorpion

    Thisornateironsculptureofafootlongscorpionhasamatchingheadband.Iftheheadbandisworn,theusermaythencommandtheIronScorpionto

    actasanagent.Doingsoplacestheuserinatrance,buttheusermayuse

    thescorpionashisowneyesandears,andmayusethescorpiontoact.The

    usermayendthistranceatanytime,butthentheIronScorpionbecome

    inertandinactive.IronScorpion:AC3[16],HD3,Attacks:sting1d2,Move

    The Orb of Sorrows

    TheOrbisasimplewhiteorb,thesizeofafist,withasinglebutton.

    DepressingthebuttoncausestheOrbtowhir.Theorbwillbegintohover,

    thoughitcanbethrowntoapointwhereitwillbeginitswork.Theorb

    hoversaboutfivefeetfromtheground,andgeneratesafieldofpsychic

    disturbance.Anysentientorsapientcreatureina30footradiuswillbeovercomewithsorrowanddejection.Allcreaturesintheareaofeffectmust

    saveorbeimmobilized,wrackedwithhopelessnessandsorrow,untilthe

    Thepersonalshieldsurroundsthewearerinaprotectiveauraof

    shimmeringlight.TheShieldiswornasabeltwithasimpleswitchonthe

    buckle.Onceactivated,theshieldwillabsorbupto30hitpointsofdamage,

    afterwhichtheitemwilldeactivateitselftoregenerateitscircuits.This

    takes12hours.Theshieldwillrunoutofpowerafteratotalof1hourof

    use.Itcanberechargedbyplacingaspeciallycraftedpieceoforichalcum

    crystalinasealedchamberonthebelt.Suchanitemwillcost150GP.

    The Silver Shield

    TheSilverShieldappearstobeasinglebracerwithalarge,silverbossthat

    wouldsitonthetopofthearm.However,whenastudontheoppositeside

    ispressed,thebossexpandsandfoldsoutintoamediumsizedround,silver

    shield.Thisactsasanormalshieldforpurposesofdefensecalculationsbut

    whenfacingbeamweapons(lasers,theHandofDeath,etc.),roll1d6.Ona

    12,theshieldhasnoadditionaleffect.Ona35,thebeamisreflectedaway

    harmlessly,ona6,thebeamisreflectedbacktotheattacker.
