Autumn is undoubtably the best time of year to visit (or
even better, live in) Savannah Lakes Village. While the
region has an abundance of evergreen pines, it is this
time of year that we recognize and especially appreciate
the abundance of hardwoods. With the mild weather
and beautiful scenery, this is also a great time to explore
the special places in and around Savannah Lakes Village,
that in part, help make living here so unique. So take
the opportunity this fall to GET OUTDOORS and find your
own way of enjoying the autumn foliage... From the tee
box, in the seat of a bike or kayak, driving along
hundreds of miles of country roads, an afternoon cruise
on the lake, or a leisurely hike while exploring special
sites in our parks and national forest. Our hope for you is
that in doing so, you will continually develop a greater
appreciation for the remarkable area and region that
surrounds us, just as we do every time we are fortunate
to walk out our own back door.

SLV Lady Lakers Repeat as 2012 State Tennis Champions!
A BRIEF LOOK AT THE LATEST
1
Sunday, November 4: The Lady Lakers repeated as South
Carolina State Champions in Hilton Head. They played
Low Country for the semi-finals then played the Grand
Strand, team which was the wildcard team. The Lady
Lakers went on to defeat the Grand Strand Team to
repeat as South Carolina State Champions.
The SLV Men’s team also advanced to the state
championship finals, but came up one match short. The men won their group advancing to
the semi-finals where they won their match against Columbia. Unfortunately, they lost 2-1 in
the finals to Greenville. However, the SLV Men’s team was the recipient of a wild card and
will advance to the sectional championship. Both teams will be traveling to Columbus, GA in
late November/early December to represent Savannah Lakes Village and compete at the
Southern Sectionals.

Ride down almost any highway in McCormick County early on a fall morning and you will likely see empty trucks and SUV’s parked on the side of the road. You may also see hunters in bright orange vests and hats headed for the woods. What’s going on? The familiar scene is deer hunting season in South Carolina.
Deer are considered ‘big game’ in our state. Hunters must secure a hunting license; hunters born after 1979 must pass a Hunter Education Course to secure their license. McCormick County has a wealth of land available to the hunter. The SC Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Management Lands and Sumter National Forest lands are protected areas and are part of a plan for the conservation of fish, wildlife, and other natural resources. Important activities allowed on these lands include hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, wildlife or other natural resource photography, and environmental education.
In McCormick, many hunt these public lands which are designated and managed by the SC DNR and are open to the public under specific time frames and restrictions for each property. SC DNR divides deer season into three kinds of hunting – the archery hunt, the muzzleloader (or black powder) hunt, and the rifle hunt.
Joe Belanger is a deer hunter. When talking to Joe about his hunting, he makes it clear that he is not a ‘trophy hunter.’ He enjoys the more primitive hunts – the muzzleloader or the archery hunt and he
hunts for food. Once he shoots a deer, an important part of the hunt to Joe is processing the deer himself. He has always believed that processing gives him a different relationship with the food supply. Joe has hunted all his life, enjoying what nature offers. Whether it’s a walk in the woods or getting back to basics, respect of wildlife and the environment is an important part of hunting.
Hunting can be simple. It usually begins with a day in the woods - scouting the signs of deer, choosing an area for the hunt, and putting up a portable deer stand. Deer won’t come to an area where their territory has been disturbed so it’s necessary for the hunter to wait several days for the scent to fade before hunting an area successfully. The hunter comes back several days later and plays the
“waiting” game to see if any deer come near enough to shoot.
The hunt with the muzzleloader is one shot limited to about 100 yards. Even though it was formerly called a black powder hunt, actual black powder is rarely used today since the advent of safer powders. Hunting during the muzzleloader season since 1972, Joe enjoys hunting public land. He believes it is not necessary to belong to an expensive hunt club. Any hunter can enjoy our natural resources.
For more information about deer hunting in South Carolina, check out the SC DNR hunting resources website at http://www.dnr.sc.gov/hunting.html .
