Recruitment of Volunteer Providers
Area Endodontists located in all areas of Palm Beach County were recruited and asked to perform one Root Canal a month for children under the age of eighteen.
Volunteers are granted Sovereign Immunity through the Volunteer Health Provider Program.
Volunteer Providers are able to receive up to 7 Continuing Education Credits.
Although services provided are not able to be claimed for tax purposes, the volunteer providers do have the ability to claim materials, travel expenses, etc. related to treating the referred child. We recommend that they contact their accountant to ensure that the volunteer provider is afforded all of the tax benefits of participating as a volunteer in the program.

Root Canal Heroes~!
Criteria Child must be a patient of the Palm Beach County Health
Department
Referral must be under the age of 18.
Teenager must be well behaved.
Parents/Guardians are case managed including proper etiquette in private practice settings as well as committing to not miss or be late for appointments with endodontic provider. Dental staff stresses the tremendous service that the teenager is receiving.
Parent must meet income eligibility requirements.
Dental Assessment Performed by clinic dentist:
Tooth must be restorable after root canal therapy by restoration.
Pulpotomy is completed by clinic dentist and temporary filling placed – final endodontic treatment is needed within 3-4 weeks.
Film given to teenager/parent to take to endo appt.
Appointment to endodontic office is made by Mary Pagana, referral coordinator, for the child.
Depending on age of the referral, Parent/Guardian/Teenager are advised that the tooth will eventually need to have a crown placed on it.
After root canal therapy, the teenager returns to PBC Health Department Clinic for permanent restoration of tooth or Atlantic Coast Pediatric Research Clinic at Palm Beach State College for a crown. Endodontist sends back digital x-ray with final fill for patient record.
