The Energy Crisis

Rising demand

Limitations – Fuel ResourcesBased on current projections, within the next 75 years (at current rates of consumption), the extractable

• coal, • oil• natural gas reserves • nuclear fuel

would be depleted

5

What is a Carbon Footprint?

A carbon footprint is the measure of the amount of greenhouse gases, measured in kilograms of carbon dioxide emitted by human activities

Page 6: Save Electricity

Some tips to reduce carbon footprints….

6

Switching off five 60 W lights in hallways when

you don’t need them – saves about 270 kg

CO2 per year.

Replacing 5 ordinary light bulbs in lamps that

you use around 5 hours a day with (CFL)

bulbs - saves about 250 kg CO2 per year

Switching off your air conditioner every day for

4 hours – saves about 300 kg CO2 per year.

Power Demand Supply Gap

INDIA

Conserving energy is an effective solution to 3 major problems that we face:

Demand – 7,74,324 MW

Supply – 6,89,021 MW

Deficit – 85303 MW

The Deficit is showing a growing trend.

* In Maharashtra, the deficit is approx. 4000 MW.

* In Mumbai, the deficit is approx. 900 MW.

• Increased Load Shedding• Depletion of Energy Reserves• Global Warming and Climate Change*http://www.powermin.nic.in/JSP_SERVLETS/internal.jsp

Energy Conservation

What is Energy Conservation?

Saving Improving efficiency

Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving are TWO aspects of Energy Conservation

Page 12: Save Electricity

Solar Panels for water heating – an indicative study

A typical building of 30 flats would consume approx. 10800 kW-hrs per month by using geysers for heating water. The cost involved would be approx. Rs. 50000/- per month.

Installing a solar panel solely for heating water would cost approx. Rs. 4,50,000/-

The operational & maintenance costs would be minimal.

Thus, the investment can be offset in terms of savings on energy bills in a span of 9 months. And this is an environment friendly process that would REDUCE CO2 EMISSIONS BY 49 TONS in a year. This is the equivalent of planting about 165 trees.

Unit of Electricity: One unit of electricity is exactly equal to 1000 watts of power used for 1 hour

Note the power consumption given on appliance label in watts or kW (1000 watts).

Calculate the how much energy the appliance consumes by the formula

Energy consumed (kW-hrs) = Power (kW) x Time used (hours)

Cost (Rs.) = Energy consumed (kW-hrs) x Tariff (Rs.)

General

Monitor lights, fans, geysers, pumps and other devices / appliances in daily use to minimize energy wastage

Standby power is responsible for 5 – 10% of total

electricity use in most home and could be responsible for up to 1% of global carbon dioxide emission!
