The 70’s was a great time. Who could forget the film Saturday Night Fever with John Travolta and his classic white disco suit? And do you know which rock and roll group sold more than two hundred million albums? Or who are the only songwriters to have five songs in the Top Ten at the same time? You’d be correct if you said the Bee Gees! At 3pm on Sunday, November 17th, The Nassau Pops will present its fifteenth annual benefit for Cerebral Palsy of Nassau County. Our special guests this year are The New York Bee Gees. Their tribute show is comprised of some of Long Island’s most versatile and exceptionally talented players. Together with The Nassau Pops they will present the greatest Bee Gees show a fan can experience. The band, with its stunning production, powerful vocals, and professional stage presence, will offer all of the classic 70’s disco hits from Stayin’ Alive to Night Fever while embracing their early works such as To Love Somebody, I’ve Got To Get A Message To You and Massachusetts. Title sponsor for this performance is NEFCU, one of Long Island’s leading credit unions. NEFCU is proud to be celebrating seventy-seven years of providing affordable banking services to the Long Island community. Anyone who lives, works or attends school on Long Island can take advantage of their exceptional offers. Tickets will be made available through our September newsletter or directly from the Tilles Center box office.

The New York Bee Gees
Spread out a blanket or set up some lawn chairs for you and your family, pour a cool drink and enjoy the summer sounds of The Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra as it begins its thirty-sixth season of concerts in the beautiful parks of Long Island.
The orchestra will open Series I on Wednesday, July 10th at the Valley Stream Band Shell on the Village Green. On July 12th The Nassau Pops will be returning to Greis Park in Lynbrook, one of our favorite performing locations. The first appearance in Lynbrook was in 1990 making this our thirtieth consecutive year of concerts there. The orchestra travels east just over our Nassau border to the soundstage of Heckscher Park in the Town of Huntington. Then it’s back to our Mineola home base to bring Series I to a close on July 19th for our performance in Memorial Park on the Village’s new amphitheater.
As of the printing of this newsletter, we are awaiting confirmation dates for two Series II concerts, one at Chelsea Mansion in East Norwich and the other at Lakeside Theatre in Eisenhower Park. Once confirmed, we will post the dates prominently on our website www.nassaupops.com and on our office phone at 516-565-0646. We are, however, pleased to announce that the Village of Malverne has invited us back after a ten year absence. You can see us there on Sunday, August 4th at 3pm with a rain date of Sunday, August 11th, also at 3pm. Our return performance in Mineola’s Memorial Park is scheduled for 8pm on Thursday evening August 8th.
Jack and Ann Cassin will again be joining us performing selections from some of Broadway’s most beloved musicals.
The Nassau Pops appreciates the help we receive from our friends at NEFCU, one of Long Island’s leading credit unions. Their longtime support of our projects is an important part of their community outreach program.
Additionally, our events are made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Huntington Arts Council, Inc.
We are pleased to introduce Joe DeAngelo in this issue of Musician’s Corner. Joe joined the trumpet section of The Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra in 1996. He grew up in North Massapequa, and like most serious musicians, felt the spark of music ignite at a young age. He began his study of the trumpet in the fourth grade at Eastplain Elementary School and credits most of his early music development to middle and junior high school music teacher, Paul Marcucci. While at Plainedge High School, Joe met and worked very closely with Director of Music, Peter Freeman who, by the way, is a regular member of The Nassau Pops trombone section and was ultimately responsible for introducing Joe to us. Throughout high school Joe performed on trumpet with the Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Orchestra, and Jazz Choir and in his senior year, he discovered his acting and dancing skills when he was chosen for the role of Scarecrow in his high school production of The Wizard of Oz.
When it came time to choose a career path, Joe decided on Industrial Engineering, knowing that music could and would always be his avocation. His decision proved correct. Joe chose a five year Master’s Degree program at Rutgers University and, in between studies, still found time to participate in the Marching Band, Pep Band, and Concert Band.
After college, Joe began his career with Long Island’s Del Labs, first as an Industrial Engineer, then as a Packaging Engineer. Several years later, Joe moved to Kroger Packaging and in a short time worked his way up to a partnership within this firm which manufactures labels for the high end cosmetic and fragrance industry.
Looking back on his high school years, Joe tells us that these years played a significant role in his musical development. However, they were life changing as well. It was in high school that he met Jeanette Nappo. They were married in 2001, currently live in Massapequa Park, and have a special needs son named John Carlo who gets more than his share of their love.
When Joe is not performing with The Nassau Pops, he enjoys playing soccer, gigging with his seven member cover band, Fuzz, and is an avid, if not rabid, Rutgers football fan. Rumor has it that he throws an amazing tailgate party!
