Rabbi Allen will lead us in a lively discussion of contemporary issues in the context of
Jewish tradition. This informal and interactive forum is a unique opportunity to talk with
the rabbi as we explore together the meaning and impact on our lives today of the Torah
portion we will read at our Saturday morning Shabbat service.

Roger and Jennifer Rice invite the congregation to join in
the simcha as Rabbi Allen calls their daughter, Libby, to the
Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday morning, June 28th.
A very special Kiddush in her honor, sponsored by
proud grandparents, Martin and Miriam Sandler,
will follow the service.

As we ready this current issue of the Shofar for publication, we are basking in
the afterglow of a remarkable Passover, with its beautiful seder made richer
and sweeter by the participation of so many of our members, and a wonderful
roster of guests we hope will remain with us throughout the year and beyond.
I am deeply grateful to be able to share in the creation of such joyful memories
with our congregation family and friends. Thanks for making this the Pesach I
had hoped for. You all made my favorite holiday even more special.
The coming weeks, too, are filled with meaning, both in the Jewish calendar of
holidays and observances and in our services that will commemorate them.
By the time you read this, we will be presenting the moving program of our Yom
Ha-Sho’ah, Holocaust remembrance, service on Saturday, April 26th, in keeping
with the weighty significance of the observance.
We will celebrate the joy of Israel’s independence, Yom Ha-Atzma’ut, on Friday,
May 9th, just as a number of our members are completing the preparations for
our Mission to Experience the Jewish Soul in Israel! We will have our special
Torah service for Shavuot, notable for its dramatic reading of the Ten
Commandments accompanied by traditional prayers said only on this occasion,
on Saturday morning, May 24th, the day before our departure.
The excitement builds through June, when the travelers will return to share
the ruach, the spirit, of Israel at our service on June 13th. Our celebration of
Libby Rice’s Bat Mitzvah, on June 28th, will be the culmination of a memorable
spring season.
For those unable to embark on the upcoming Israel adventure, don’t
despair: we hope to be planning another trip in the future. L’hitra-ot – see you
soon!
With love and blessings – Rabbi Karen Allen—386-676-5157

When people ask me if I am still employed, my answer has to be qualified. I retired from my
occupation on August 1, 2006. But I do work – a lot – for Congregation Beth Sholom. I
maintain the list of birthdays, the list of anniversaries, and the list of yahrtzeits. I manage
the website. I edit the Shofar. I write the press releases. I send out email reminders so that
our congregation and guests are aware when we have an activity in the coming week. All of
that is in addition to the responsibilities that come with the office of the president: running
the board meetings, attending all of our functions and filling in if there are not enough
volunteers, and sitting on the bima and making the announcements at services.
When I left my job, I was excited to be in control of my calendar. I was finally able to
schedule my activities. I live at Legacy of Leesburg, a retirement community with a very
busy activity center. I took advantage of what they offer, and joined many clubs and exercise
groups.
So how did it happen that the shul requires some of my time almost every day?
It started in 2008, when I was asked to become secretary of our board of directors. I was not
actively involved with the shul at that time. I had not been attending services regularly.
But I decided to accept the position, because I knew was that it would make me feel good to
be ‘giving back’ instead of spending all of my time in the pursuit of fun.
Since then, I inherited all of the duties that I listed above, including the presidency! While
none of the tasks are extensively time consuming, when you add them all together they take
up a significant amount of my time.
In January, we formed the social committee, with Dorothy Strauss and Bette Croll as
co-chairs. Having that committee is wonderful. It makes it less likely that I will have to
help with our social functions. I thank them both for their willingness to volunteer.
I am sharing this with you, hoping to inspire you to get more involved. I would like to hand
over the Shofar, the website, and the press releases to people who are ready to help. I will
teach you everything you need to know, and be there for you as a backup. I know as the
president I should pick up the phone and ask for the help. But the challenge with that is I
don’t know who might have the time and the inclination to learn how to do the work. So I
prefer to ask for volunteers instead. If you think you might be able to take on one of those
jobs, please contact me. By volunteering you will help me, you will help the synagogue, and
you will help yourself, because it will enrich your life.
Shalom,
Linda

EXPLANATION OF DATES ON YAHRZEIT LIST
We give our members the option to observe yahrzeit on the secular date (the actual date of
passing) or the Hebrew date. If there is no Hebrew date next to a name, it is because their
family prefers to observe yahrzeit on the secular calendar date.
To add a loved one to the yahrzeit list, contact Linda Bork and provide the names and
relationship of the congregant and relative, and the actual date of passing including the
year. Please indicate whether you wish to observe yahrzeit on the secular or Jewish date.
