Abortion rates are increasing in almost 80% of the Indian states, mainly Punjab and Haryana. These two states have the highest number of abortions every year. This social evil is deep rooted in Indian ethos and the most shocking fact is that the innovative and hard high end technologies are brutally killing the Indian girl child. Innovative techniques, like biopsy, ultrasound, scan tests and amniocentesis, devised to detect genetic abnormalities, are highly misused by number of families to detect gender of the unborn child. These clinical tests are highly contributing to the rise in genocide of the unborn girl child.

It is a shame for any progressive nation that a male child is given preference to a female child and consequently lives are literally nipped in the bud in front of the wide open eyes of an indifferent society.

Records at Edhi Foundation show that more than 1,200 newborns were killed and dumped in Pakistan last year, an increase of about 200 from the previous year.Statistics show that roughly nine out of 10 are baby girls, which families may consider too costly to keep in a country where women frequently are not allowed to work

Change in mindset needed to tackle female foeticide: Maneka Gandhi

New Delhi: In tackling female foeticide, Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi believes changing people's mindset in an incentive-based way is more pertinent than bringing in stern laws. Gandhi said that the Government's Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme will be based on a strong system of incentives and media advocacy in bringing about an all-round change in attitudes.
