    Dedication and Appreciation

This story is dedicated to my wonderful friends,

companions, all those I have cared for and loved over theyears who are now gone from this life, especially Tristram

Coffin, Phillip McDonald and Danny Glass. I could sit here

and name so many others, but it would be a long list and you

would have no idea who they were. I remember them and

thats what is important. Periodically, something will happen

and it triggers a distant memory of one or several of them. I

    miss them all.

In this story, I have tried to e!press what the meaning

of love is to me. It is not something you can weigh or put in

a bo!. "ften words cannot e!plain it. #ut I do believe it is

the most valuable thing we can ever have in our lives.

I also want to than$ my friend, %ulian Green, for the

use of his picture. I truly appreciate that. It will give the

reader a handsome face to relate to, regarding the character

of %onathan &olfe in the story.

    PROLOGE

I, the writer, have never believed in coincidence. I

believe that things happen for reasons and we meet thepeople we do in life for reasons. 'lso, we meet them when

we are supposed to meet them and not before. I believe we

are connected to happenings and people in ways that I cannot

e!plain. Certain events, whether large or small, bring certain

individuals together. (ome may have a big influence on our

lives and some not so much, but all happen for reasons.

    )ere are perfect e!amples.

It was the late nineteen si!ties or early seventies. I

was in +ichmond and went to the irginia Museum of -ine

'rts to see the (alvador Dali ewel collection. "bviously, I

was not the only person there to view it.

It was almost ten years later, in 'tlanta, Georgia, that

I met Tris, who became my best friend. In a long

conversation we had at our first meeting and discussing our

histories, we discovered we had been in +ichmond during

the same time period. -urther discussion somehow brought

up the subect of the Dali collection at the museum. &e

concluded we both had been there that day and possibly

rubbed elbows. #ut. &e were not supposed to meet yet. It

    was not time.

&e had a terrific and very close friendship until I

would never see his handsome smiling face or hear his

unforgettable, deep barrel laugh again. It was ust before his

birthday in 'ugust of nineteen ninety/nine, he left this life.

In nineteen seventy/seven, a friend dragged me to a

bar. I did not want to go, protesting constantly, $nowing the

night would be a total waste of time. -inally, as my eyesbecame accustomed to the dim lighting, I loo$ed across the

crowded room and saw a man sitting at the bar. I could not

stop staring at him. Then, most unbelievably, my friend said

he happened to $now him and introduced me. )ad I not

gone out that night, I could have missed meeting Phillip, a

handsome fireman, the one person who became incredibly

significant in my life for nineteen years. In May of nineteen

ninety/si!, he caught a cold that the stubborn man would not

ta$e care of, telling me it would go away. It developed into

rampant pneumonia and Phillip went away. )e left this life

    that same month.

Two years later, I was wor$ing at a transitional home.

The girls who ran the place saw how 0down I was over

losing Phillip and they put the office computer online so Icould do some online dating. I was very reluctant to do so,

as I thought it outrageous. 1ow, remember, online dating in

nineteen ninety/eight was in its beginnings and not what it is

today. There were no pictures, ust written descriptions in

the profiles. The girls were adamant and $ept pushing. (o I

too$ a leap of faith. I found a personal ad and he sounded

    nice. (o I responded.

That is how I met Dan. &e shared an incredible

Platonic relationship for si!teen years. )e was a funny, $ind,

considerate and loving man. &e were going to retire

together to the (& coast of Me!ico. Dan and I loved the

ocean and the beach. The area inspired my novels, It

)appened In 2ihuataneo, The 3ua$e and The (tranger from

the (ea. They will be in print sometime down the road.

It was May of two thousand and fourteen and got

word that our house in Me!ico was almost finished. &e

were so happy. "n May twentieth, I had fi!ed brea$fast and

went to his bedroom to see if he was hungry. I found him in

his bed. )e had had a heart attac$ in the night and was gone.

I would now have to go to our retirement house alone.

This is my friend, %ulian Green. )is handsome face

is similar to that of the character, %ohnathan &olfe, in this

novel. I as$ed %ulian if I could include his picture so the

reader could get an image in his head, as to how the

character would appear. Than$ you, %ulian, for letting me

    use your wonderful picture.

    * * * * *

(o you see. Those we meet can be the ones who lead

us to others who become important. &hich for$ in the road

we choose will determine the direction of our lives.

(ometimes I believe the -ates step in and help us see the

right path. It may not be the one we had planned, but later,

when we loo$ bac$, we may actually reali4e it was the right

choice. It is li$e Dan used to say, 5uoting the -rench

Proverb by %ean de 6a -ontaine. 0' person often meets his

Destiny, on the road he too$ to avoid it. If we all seriously

went about fulfilling our Destiny, there would be no need for

    -ate.

(ome have as$ed me if I would do it all again,

$nowing the heartache, pain and agony of loss I still endure,in seeing those close to me leave me behind. I tell them,

there is a wonderful country song done by Garth #roo$s

whose words go7 0-or a moment, all the world was right.

)ow could I have $nown, that youd ever say goodbye8 'nd

now. Im glad I didnt $now the way it all would end, the

way it all would go. "ur lives are better left to chance. I

could have missed the pain, but Ida had to miss the dance. They are gone, but they still live in my heart and in my mind.

There is a saying I would write on the 5uilts of

friends of mine who died of 'ID(. 0&e are immortal, as

long as we live in the hearts and minds of others, especially

the hearts and minds of those who love us. I believe this

pertains to all those who go before us.

'nd so, this story brings elements of the -ates, timing

and the meeting of others, putting them all into play. The

place, the people, the circumstances, the events, and maybe

even certain numbers, connect them all together to create a

would significantly change that outcome. "f course, the

-ates can step in to hopefully $eep things on the right trac$.

Paul opened the door to the main office. )e led

Michael in, then pointed to the wall behind the des$. 9This,Mr. Michael, is what I wanted to show you.:

Michael loo$ed at the matted and framed front page

of an old newspaper. The paper was yellowed with age but

the bold, blac$ headline, now faded by time, caused him to

start. It was as if a thousand daggers pierced his eyes, his

body, his heart. )e panted, trying to catch his breath.

9Mr. Michael, are you all right8: Paul grabbed

    Michaels arm.

9I must go; (omehow I have to try and stop him;:

Michael spo$e with conviction then turned and ran out of the

    office.

Paul yelled after him. 9#ut where are you going8:

9If I can, Im saving yesterday;: )e ran through the

lobby and out the front door.

Paul was unable to run and follow him but $new he

was heading to the pavilion. )e stopped 5uic$ly at the frontdes$ to grab his coat and tell Martin where he was going.

)e limped along as fast as he could but grew tired.

)alfway there, he needed to pause and rest. (tanding at the

top of a short flight of stairs in the path, he leaned against the

stone balustrade. In his pause, it all unfolded in his mind,

right from the very first day, almost two wee$s earlier.

The sound of his boots on the polished, wooden par5uet

9Im not a professional but I sell one, once in a while.

Im not too bad. Must admit, the architecture here would

ma$e a great subect. The light gray stone walls and the

-rench Gothic windows give it a cathedral 5uality. The

Momentarily, Michael returned with his artists case

containing his paints and brushes, a few canvases and a small

carryall bag that had his turpentine, linseed oil and cleaning

rags. )e removed his cowboy hat, placing it on the des$

then pic$ed up the pen to write his name in the large,

hardbound register boo$. Three/5uarters of it had been

filled. )e could only imagine the names, the people, filling

the previous pages. )e resisted the temptation to loo$ bac$

through them. )e pulled out his wallet and got out his creditcard and placed it on the des$.

9I will.: Michael nodded his head and $ept heading

Michael had been doing fast food since he arrived, running down into town. )e $new he could have eaten in
