Employee Development OpportunitiesBy Marcie Carter
Are you interested in personal and professional growth, and in developing as a person and as an employee?
We would love to assist you in your endeavors to becoming a better you.
Within the first couple of months of fall there are various classes you
may choose to enroll in, such as World Class Customer Service part
one and two. These courses remind us how to give the “Wow!” factor
to our customers, and the follow up will guide participants through
a self-assessment in order to recognize their individual strengths.
Time and Attendance for Managers will assist with approval of your
employees’ time, understanding pay codes and gives great “how to”
guides and training modules. With open enrollment right around the
corner we have coordinated with the benefits department to offer
you benefits seminars, so you can make the most informed decisions
when it comes to your health insurance.
Leadership Skills for Managers focuses on interpersonal and motivational skills, and the Managers Basics Course focuses on core competencies
and business skills. Participants may be current managers or have potential to become one. The Managers Basics Course is offered on a monthly
basis and is required for all new managers and supervisors. It is also highly recommended for all current leadership as it provides practical
instruction for our local processes, procedures and use of forms. Are you interested in building healthy relationships, communicating effectively
and resolving conflict? The MANDT System training is the course for you.
Along with offering developmental courses, the Training Department is responsible for providing all of the mandatory annual training. Please
check out the MCCS website under the section entitled MCCS Employees/Training Program for a listing of all required training. In this location
you will find the training calendar, trackers to record progress of completed training and all of the training on line. Every other week we facilitate
the New Employee Orientation (NEO), which welcomes our new employees, guides them through completing all new hire paperwork, provides
all mandatory annual training and gives them tools for success within MCCS. Along with the mandatory training in NEO, we provide helpful
classes such as Marine Corps Acculturation, Dress for Success, Communications, Customer Care and the Mission/Vision of MCCS. Any portion
of NEO is available to all of our current employees, upon request. This is especially helpful for our employees without computer access and for
those who wish to be in instructor led classes as opposed to computer based. All mandatory annual training requirements must be completed
by all employees no later then September 30.
We are here to offer our assistance and guidance as you work through completing the mandatory requirements set forth from HQ and as you
seek training opportunities to develop personally and professionally. Call us at 760-830-4430 with any questions.

On July 15, MCCS lost a valued employee and friend of 34 years, Bobby Kirchner, Gardener Supervisor of the Desert Winds Golf Course Maintenance department.
We are thankful for the beauty that Bobby brought to our grounds and lives. He will be greatly missed.

In my line of work, I often ask people if they have any savings to their name, what exactly are they saving for and how much do they have or need? At that point I often get the same response, but in two very different manners. It is either a very confident or questionable response, accompanied by an odd look. Ultimately, the response given is “for emergencies.” Unfortunately, the problem with what seems to be the universal response is that many people are unaware of everything a short-term savings account should include, and therefore are often unprepared. Below is an explanation that goes beyond “saving for a rainy day.” Keep in mind you do not have to open up three separate savings accounts.
1. Reserve Fund: This is money set aside for annual/foreseeable expenses such as, vehicle registration, insurance deductible, auto insurance, vacations, school clothes, holidays, birthdays, anniversaries or taxes. Estimate your expected cost, divide the total amount by the months before said needs or wants arise and include that figure into your monthly budget. Viola, just like that! So, if it’s a $300 budget you set for yourself on a particular
expense and you have 12 months before the expense comes around, you simply set aside $25 per month. Then, you will not be caught unprepared.
2. Emergency Fund: This is usually the only fund most people have
in mind when they say they are saving. Savers should strive for an emergency nest egg of approximately three to six months’ worth of their take home pay; at the bare minimum $1000 should be kept in the emergency fund at all times. A regular savings account should be used for this type of savings. Emergency savers should also keep in mind that foreseeable expenses do not justify a withdrawal.
3. Goal Getter Fund: Money you plan on accumulating within the next
1-5 years for a particular (non-annual) expense. A perfect example would be money used for the down payment of a car, electronics or the closing costs on a home. You may want to consider a Money Market Savings Account or a Certificate of Deposit as these types of accounts usually generate a slightly higher return than an ordinary savings account.
