The hair creates a statement about oneself. In a society hyped with trivial commonalities, a personal statement puts weights to the ego. This is the reason hair loss is an ugly encounter especially to a woman. She will go to any length, purchasing the appropriate hair loss treatment where possible just to restore the beauty that was once her hair.

There are several known causes to hair loss in women although the most common cause of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia. Androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness occurs in a woman due to a specific hormonal fluctuation in the body. This is a natural period in life that menopausal women experience.

What the hormonal fluctuation refers to is the presence of male hormones in the body. Since a woman also produces testosterone, albeit at lower levels than in men, in the adrenal gland and ovaries, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) formation is possible. DHT build-up is the chief cause of pattern hair loss. When the hair follicles process the nearby androgens unnaturally, there are tendencies wherein they accumulate in the scalp.  DHT kills the hair follicles in a span of years if its activity is left undisturbed.

However, complete balding is a very rare occurrence to a woman because a woman is incapable of seminal secretion. The natural presence of estrogen in the body also somehow fights androgenic activity. Therefore, a woman’s body cannot produce excessive DHT. The thing is, even low levels of DHT can already be damaging to the hair follicles, hence hair loss.

A woman is said to have high levels of androgens all over the body when she experiences hirsutism (excess body hairs), acne, menstrual disturbances, and hair loss in the scalp. Dysfunction in the ovaries and/or thyroid glands oftentimes contribute to these conditions. Good thing there is a hair loss treatment for these conditions as well.

Causes to hair loss in women are diverse yet available treatments for them are limited. A few of the conventional approach to female pattern baldness are Minoxidil, Spironolactone, and hormone replacement therapy.

There are however natural hair loss regimens for women that include the use herbs. It is true that herbal medicine can be sometimes outside the mainstream science but due to their potential and easy accessibility, herbs are good options for treating hair loss.

A popular herbal hair loss treatment is saw palmetto. Saw palmetto comes as a topical solution which should be massaged directly onto the scalp. It is said to be effective in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome, an endocrine disorder.

The only reason saw palmetto is contraindicated in women generally is that there appears to be a lack of scientific basis about the herb.  But to be safe, pregnant and lactating women should avoid taking saw palmetto.
