An Explanation of the Tremolo Notation
Parenthesized numbers immediately above or below the beamsindicate the number of note stems for a measured tremolo, e.g.
with (32) above the beamsis identical in performance to
Free tremolos are without parenthesized numbers and areindicated as such in the text of the score.
Cautionary Accidentals and Grace Notes
Cautionary accidentals are not always parenthesized.
Grace notes sound before the beat.A slashed grace note indicates a shorter duration than were the grace note not slashed. An unflagged grace note indicates a longer duration than were the grace note flagged.
A principal note tied from a grace note of the same pitchalways is held over rather than restruck.
Notes Below the Standard 88 Key Keyboard
These may be omitted.
Pedaling Notation
Modern pedaling notation in this edition functions as follows.
The sostenuto pedal is always applied where the solid horizontal line is present. A vertical line at the start is a courtesy indication to depress the pedal, elsewhere it indicates to lift and depress the pedal for the newly applied notes. In most instances the vertical line at the initial depress of the sustenuto pedal is omitted.
The sustain pedal is only depressed once a vertical line appears.
The wedge only indicates to lift the sustain pedal.
Observations on the Philosophy of the Notation and its Performance
These works are notated as ideal representations of piano sound. Acute precision and detail in this regard with some of these works does not negate either a performer's freedom to interpret the music in accord with his inner light or for him to yield to the demands of practicality when this is necessary.

con Pedale
Adagio
a tempo
please consult the next page for an explanation of the horizontal brackets
slow, decelerating roll
hold this note longer than indicated

addendum for Riddarfjärden
Horizontal brackets are used in four measures to indicate horizontally displaced voices which are metrically synchronous. This enables clear visual separation for melodic and voicing emphasis in the notation. In measure two the treble cleff ">" accent for the "B" notes is through use of a bracket presented as excluding the "D" and "F-sharp" notes.
Measure two as immediately below
corresponds to this measure without the bracket and without the accents
Measures eight, nine and ten as immediately below
correspond to these measures without the brackets
In the second of these measuresthe A-sharp has been replaced with a B-flat
to simplify the engraving process
