ever since the 1960s.

Edmund Hillary passed away in 2008. Today, many people still admire him because

he climbed the highest mountain in the world and he did great things for others. Hillary

Various geographic regions bear Hillary's name. The five-dollar note of New

Zealand also features his image. Time magazine listed him as one of the 100 most

1-6 and complete Question 7.

I Have a Dream – The Life of Martin Luther King

This is about the life of a great man, Martin Luther King, who fought for equal

rights for the black people in the United States. He believed all Americans should be

treated fairly and equally no matter what their skin colours are.

King was born in 1929 in Georgia. Since he was black, he could not go to the same

schools as white children. Black Americans also had to use separate restrooms,

restaurants, cinemas and swimming pools. If they used these facilities of the white

people, they might violate the law and get arrested by the police.

King thought that was wrong. He worked for equal rights for black people. He

helped lead peaceful protests to change unfair laws. It was a hard fight. King was

attacked and arrested many times but he never gave up on his hopes. As time passed, his

efforts started to pay off. More and more Americans grew to understand that it was wrong

to treat black people differently from white people.

In 1963, King led a quarter million people in a march to Washington, D.C, the

capital city of the US. King gave his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. He spoke about his

hopes for America. He said people should be judged by their hearts, not by their skin

colour. His efforts helped bring about new laws to create equal rights for all Americans.

The third Monday of January is a holiday to celebrate the life of Martin Luther

King. We honour his courage in working to improve the lives of so many people.

Dear Miss Chan,

I am writing to tell you how grateful Class 6G is to you. We are sorry for the times

we were lazy and a bit naughty. Even though we sometimes made you disappointed, you

never flew off the handle. You did not shout at us or give us harsh punishments. You

taught us how to improve instead. We really want to thank you for your patience.

You were always there for us, never letting us face any problems we had at school

alone. I still remember the time I hurt my knees badly when I fell over in a running race.

You comforted me kindly and stayed with me after school until my parents arrived. You

could have left me at school by myself but you chose to wait with me. I was really

touched and felt warm.

Learning with you was never boring! Being in your class was enriching, too. You

taught us countless things, including life skills. We learnt how to respect others and make

good choices. You were proud of us when we did well. When we lost the inter-class

basketball competition, you were not ashamed of us at all. Instead, you clapped so hard

for our efforts and told us not to give up. You made us feel much better about losing.

We are going to the secondary school soon. We are all so upset about leaving you

but we know that we will keep in touch. Thank you for everything you have done for us.
